*Paulo looks around with a confident smile.*
Paulo: .. So..
*Abbey looks bored.*
Abbey: Hmm..
*David, now wearing a party hat, stares ahead blankly and blows on a party horn.*

Daisy: Paulo!!
*Paulo lights up.*

*Daisy runs over, flailing her arms frantically.*
Daisy: I couldn’t find her anywhere! I’m sorry!
*Paulo starts sweating.*
Paulo: What?!

*Paulo rests his chin on his hand, looking thoughtful.*
Paulo: Where the hell could she be, then?
*David still has the party horn in his mouth.*
David: I want cake.

Lucy: A-hem.
*Paulo freezes.*

*Paulo turns to see Lucy standing there casually. He yells.*
Paulo: AUGH!!
*The party horn falls as David’s jaw drops.*

*Lucy looks around critically.*
Lucy: This attempt’s kinda sweet, but why all the balloons? They’re a pretty obvious giveaway.
*David has the party horn ribbon dangling out of his mouth.*
David: Owned!
*Abbey glares at Paulo.*
Abbey: Toldya!
*Paulo side-eyes Abbey. Daisy pouts.*

*Paulo smirks.*
Paulo: Don’t forget, I always have a plan B at the ready..
Lucy: Oh really.

*Paulo extends a hand to Lucy.*
Paulo: In fact, I’ve got a sweet, juicy surprise waiting right over here, babe.. ♥
*Lucy looks on at him, blankly. Sparkles float in the air between them.*
Lucy: …

*Lucy grabs Paulo’s wrist and there’s a loud cracking sound. She is unamused.*
Lucy: You can keep that one to yourself.
*Paulo’s face drops in horror.*

*Paulo holds his wrist and screams out in pain.*
Paulo: GOD SHE BROKE IT!!
*Abbey points a scolding finger at Paulo.*
Abbey: Will you ever learn?
*David looks on with a serious face.*
David: Double owned!
*In the background, Daisy hands Lucy a present and the two smile, unconcerned with Paulo’s injury.*

Author commentary

Veronica: Lucy got a very wonderful and thoughtful birthday present this year — the chance to break Paulo’s hand. How very considerate of him to offer it!

It’s kinda sweet to think that despite Paulo’s intentions, he really did round all these people up to create a surprise party for Lucy. What on earth were YOU doing, Mike!
