Oh Lucy, the pain may seem like an endless darkness, but you can live on without Mike. You thought that without him, life as you know it would halt and end. For a handful of time, it indeed crumbled around you and you found it impossible to carry yourself out of all the agony, but you found other ways to stand. You stood with others and regained your strength; you no longer need Mike to stand. You can move on without him as you have in the past. History will repeat itself, the cycle will continue throughout this maze of life unless you find the way out.

Nice to see the story is back on track and is no longer glitching out (sort of). Also, I can’t tell, is Lucy being sarcastic or is she just trying to convince herself what she knows isn’t true. Excluding the last image, all the pictures work towards the opposite message of the text. Still though, very good job at showing that Lucy is in denial. And no matter who you support in this, Lucy is in denial, it’s just a fact.
Either way though, you still have to understand that Lucy is having troubles with insecurity. She clearly doesn’t want to accept the fact that she cares for and may need Michael. Admittedly, I have never been in a similar position but, to Lucy, learning that you are dependent on someone would come as quite a shock.
Still though, she shouldn’t drag Sandy into that. Sandy is completely innocent.

Poor Lucy. Oh well, at least she wasn’t mean to Sandy or anything. I can’t blame her for being a little bit mad at her.

I hope that she learns to live without Mike and Mike calms down a little. She deserves some pain, but not being…crushed.

Just theoretically. Not concerning the story.
Also, if you really wanted to think about it, “I’ve always hated you.” and such would have been slightly traumatic. Especially from someone you though you could trust with everything.

It easy to see why Lucy distances herslef from her peers and prefers the company of her pets. when you have everyone treating you like a weirdo because you don’t fit in with your gender specific sterotype and the one person (Mike), who accepted you ignores you completly when someone else comes along you tend to only want to be aroud those that don’t treat you badly.

Hmm… Interesting answer. In my experiences ( Lo ), such kinds of behavior stem from false belief or misplaced trust. That kind of trust, if broken mostly will result into said behavior.

Hmmm, i wonder what the time frame between frames are. If we are still going off the past parts of this story, Lucy was invited to play with them and she blew off the invitation. Mike kind of dazed out there, but it wasn’t as if she was totally ignored unless *Le gasp* this is the retcon where they never tried to bring her into their playtime. This would mean sandy is a total bi…. Naaaaah. It just means lucy was angsty even back then, seriously what kid would already be acting jealous at that age.

@termania,
This takes place before mike blew up on her. In essence this chapter is a flashback to before mike’s explosion and this page is a flashback within a flashback, so it’s flashbackception.

strider November 9, 2012, 12:32 AM EST.

Comment ID #232561

Is she trying to convince herself that Mike’s recent rude behavior towards her is the “normal” behavior he always had towards her? Therefore justifying him as a jerk from the start? I find it laughable that she’s blaming him for things he did as a 5 year old that weren’t even part of his control (“abandoning” her in Kindergarten; when he probably was just put in a different class by the school. Yup, that jerk Mike, how could he?) And now this page, with Sandy transferring in.
Mike and Sandy planned it from conception that she’d eventually wind up together in 3rd grade and that he’d play and tutor her because she was nice and didn’t just want to pull his tail or punch him in the face constantly. How dare they. There is actually an interesting study that shows how children, until they reach about 8 years old, don’t understand empathy. I doubt Mike understood he was hurting Lucy’s feelings and vice versa. They never really talked it out. For all he knew she was having a blast on her own with Yashy, same as he was with Sandy.
Either Lucy really needs to get over her elementary school problems or at this point she really is trying to not feel guilty. She lost Mike. She did that on her own, nobody else.

I’m not talking about how he blew up on her, but she confessed to him and he rejected her because he already had Sandy. Back in Junior high he really liked Lucy and wanted to be with her, but she pushed him away. Now Mike is being distant and angry towards her and she is somewhat in denial that her behavior had any part to play in this.

Termania November 9, 2012, 12:40 AM EST.

Comment ID #232563

@termania,
I was just getting your timeframe correct here. Yeah she was in denial basically all the way up to mike’s explosion. However this chapter is before that explosion, now if it was while he was being distant with her this could be her rationalizing his behavior. But i believe this is taking place even before he started his distancing act (it’s definitely before paulo started dating jazmine). So maybe this is a clue that she was starting to question if her behavior was the right route to be going even before mike started trying to push her away. But i could be wrong and the next page could be her in a mental rage about sandy “stealing” mike and her developing a hatred of sandy.

@strider
We’re in the past remembering the past. Because Taeshi heard we liked the past so she put the past in the past so we could remember while we were remembering. 8-)

Seriously though, I think that Lucy’s general angsty-tendencies stem from her being a tomboyish personality overall. So back then (see previous page) she couldn’t play the “girly-girl” games like playing with dolls because she was too rough. And, of course, boys don’t like girls in Kindergarten. So she’s rejected by both sides…where does she go? And she ends up generally disliking everyone, leading to her Tsun Dere personality developing. So, Mike accepts her then, yeah, that’s great, but of course, personality traits die hard, so even though she loved Mike, she couldn’t express those feelings of love in a way her Tsun personality would allow, evident when she rejected his feelings toward her on the vacation. Of course, her Dere personality kicks in on occasion and eventually really broke through recently (chapter wise) when she told Mike that she loved him, but Mike’s given up and rejects her feelings.
Due to Lucy’s personality troubles, and Mikes much harsher tone than when they were on vacation (Lucy said she wasn’t ready for a relationship as opposed to Mike saying he hated Lucy), Lucy takes this so much harder than Mike did when she crushed his feelings, thus the induced vomiting and sulking in her room until Paulo sends her the cake (Yay for all the LucyxPaulo shippers like me out there).

So, to sum that all up, that’s why Lucy’s acting like that at such an age, she was so conditioned to do so by rejection from two very opposite personality sides; she was left stranded in the middle and so came to hate everyone. That ties into the actions of the characters all throughout the current and past chapters, culminating in the present situation of which we’re left in the dark (Lucy said thanks to Paulo, but her current situation is still unconfirmed).

Actually I think she’s just trying to convince herself she’s not hurt by it all. From when they were really little he was to only one that was nice to her, everyone else was mean. By the time she’d met him, she was expecting everyone to just push her away and he didn’t so she tagged along after him because he was nice but she was confused because she kept expecting to be told to go away. But then when Sandy came along, Sandy was nice and invited her along, but Mike mainly ignored her when they were all together (well he was in love so yeah, can’t blame the guy for being so focused on Sandy. Lucy never actually blamed Sandy, she was just hurt by how Mike acted) and Lucy felt shoved away again. She found her pets/companions and they’re the only ones who’ve always loved her and been nice to her the whole time and the only ones that see the real sweet side to her. For an actual friend, she always thought Mike was her only friend and they did have great times playing games together and that and now that’s gone too.

No, I know this is a flashback, I’m aware of what’s going on. No worries there! :) Haha. I feel that he is being clearly distant. Earlier this chapter she asked him to work on a project with her and he clearly made up an excuse to blow her off and his overreaction drew the attention of others, so it wasn’t a mere “Oh we’ll do it later okay Lucy?”. So I believe this is already the start of it. I find it interesting just how she is going through the stages of loss. I feel that this is the Denial/Anger stages. In where we are currently in the story she when through bargaining (When she tried to make him play video games and also when she reached out to Sandy through txt to take care of Mike.) where we left off she is in Depression and probably will be there for a while. Now she just has to reach the “Acceptance” part.

@neospecter,
Actually i was kind of making a lame joke (everything is angsty in this comic). On a serious note though, even if she was still caught in the middle, it seems as if she pushed friendship away herself here. If i remember correctly, sandy didn’t push her away she even asked if she wanted to join them. Her statement here that she was ignored seems a bit off based. However it could be her cynical older self’s pov, thus that’s how she sees it now. But she wasn’t really ignored or pushed away back then (at least not by sandy and mike could’ve cared less whether she played with them or not). I get that her personality to shell up was starting to form back then, but here’s what’s confusing me, she was snubbed by other kids, Mike put up with her and became her first “friend”, but she was still seeking friendship, Sandy offered her genuine friendship and she blew it off. I guess i’m confused because, well, no kid would really act that way. She’s already acting like her teen self and it seems a tad…..odd.

@Termania,
Ehhhh, well, it could be viewed that he blew her off or he could’ve just been a ditz and waited till the last minute to tell her that he had another assignment that took priority. Also we have no context on the assignment (i don’t think we do, at least), it could have been dropped on their laps at the last minute as well or the due date could have been moved up (i had a history teacher in high school who liked to do that). As for how he acted, remember even before he started blowing her off they already had a sort of love/hate relationship where they would argue a lot. Actually when he started blowing her off he just outright stopped talking to her, that is till the assignment in december where he basically boned himself into being with her.

Comment ID #232574

@strider
Well, people have different ways of dealing with situations. Given the circumstances, I’d assume that Lucy’s dealing was to grow up as fast as possible. So she hit that point where she actually had feelings of love early.
And, sad to say for both the furry perverts and the legitimate LucyxJessica shippers, it doesn’t look like Lucy’s a yuri, so she followed Mike, feeling love (though still being too young to really understand what it truly implicates) and rejected Sandy because she was just someone else. Remember that she did push Mike away a lot as well, just not as much as she did with everyone else.

Mike pretty much ignored her in favor of Sandy, and Lucy isn’t the type of person who easily trusts or befriends other people.
She was slowly getting out of her shell, when Mike unintentionally made her experience her worst fear once more, thus making Lucy further emphasize her strong attitude.

Termania November 9, 2012, 1:20 AM EST.

Comment ID #232580

@Neospector,
Maybe, but children who force themselves to mature quickly don’t do that just because they were snubbed. A rapid maturity spurt in a child is often related to a massive trauma. Here’s the thing, and this is just a theory, but consider we’ve seen mike’s, paulo’s, sandy’s, and even daisy’s parents. All we’ve seen of lucy’s family is her brother (i don’t remember if other members of lucy’s family at least had speaking parts). Sooo, what if there was some trauma back then, something traumatic enough to force her into a rapid maturity phase. That’s really the only way i could see her maturing to the point where she would have jealousy issues. Sorry, but getting snubbed doesn’t make kids to react to that extreme.

@termania,
Hmmm, you got me there as i don’t remember when lucy confessed to mike (didn’t really care). Like i said, i don’t BELIEVE this is after he started blowing her off as when he was doing that he was ignoring and avoiding her like the plague. Basically having no interactions with her at that point. Give me some time to evaluate the timing.

@next,
Oh bloody hell, he didn’t ignore her, he became indifferent to her, there’s a big difference between the two.

And i’m back, okay, if i can keep this straight here, this takes place before chapter 48 Pick me up, the chapters before that are the summer vacation arc, so it would have to be before that as they are still in school here. Now that we’re at the part of the recap that covers Lucy’s friends, I wonder if Sue ever gets mentioned? I know there hasn’t been much about Sue and Lucy’s relationship in the actual canon, but I keep thinking back to how Sue comforted Lucy during the the initial fallout over Mike. Aside from Paulo, she’s been the most supportive of Lucy when she was at her worst. At the end of Unrequited she said, “Contrary to what you may think, Mike isn’t your only friend in the world”. Sue’s even called Lucy by a nickname which should indicate a closer relationship between the two. So why haven’t we seen any background on this? Does Sue get any recognition for how much she cares about Lucy?

@strider
When you mentioned that Sandy asked Lucy to join her and Mike, keep in mind that Mike has already openly admitted to intentionally ignoring Lucy whenever she tried to play with them to “make her leave”. (Chapter, “left Behind”, i think.)
Anyways, I sympathize with Mike, I really do. It’s hard to keep being with someone who is so consistently rude—and sometimes downright mean— to you. But I feel really bad for Lucy.
Sure, she’s cold and distant and irrate, like, ALL the time. But that’s a front she puts on to mask her insecurity. From what I’ve seen, just based on personal experience, Lucy has very little self esteem. She doesn’t really believe that she’s WORTH loving, and is afraid to let anyone too close because she’s afraid they will end up feeling the same (made worse by Mike screaming this at her, I might add).
I don’t want Mike and Lucy to get together; their respective personalities are way too abrasive to each other, and I really believe that MikeXSandy is a good fit. But for heaven’s sake, It’s been like twelve chapters already of: Everyone dumps on Lucy, Lucy is sad, Mike is rewarded with a Christmas party and a loving partner—and no one seems to care. Lucy is literally the only character that hasn’t had at least some relief for her suffering. I understand that she’s partly to blame for this but geez…
I mean, Lucy has issues (can ANYone say they don’t?) but that doesn’t mean she deserves to suffer. Mike can still be her friend, Lucy just needs to drop this mean streak and find the courage to open up.
When you get right down to it, Lucy talks tough, but she’s the kind of person who will stand up to psycho-rapists to save her friends, jump headlong into rushing water to save Mike, develop a phobia—then do it AGAIN to save Yashy. Lucy is a good person, She’s just terrified of being vulnerable, because she’s afraid she’ll be hurt.
But look what happens anytime she really opens up and bears her soul: When she’s not ignored outright, she’s picked on, treated as though her feelings are inconsequential, or berated so badly and picked apart to the point that she actually PUKES! Can you really blame her for clamming up?

I’m just saying that Lucy f—ed up…but so did Mike. There have been more than a few times where he’s wounded Lucy’s heart in the past (and Daisy’s, for that matter) and hasn’t even once looked back.
The difference is that Lucy has come out and admitted that she’s done wrong. She apologized and is at least doing her best to pick up the pieces and grow as a person. Mike on the other hand only went to Lucy as an afterthought, at Sandy’s request (LOVED that she did that, btw. I have NO problem with Sandy here).
They’re both to blame for the crap between them. I just wish that Mike would come down off his high horse and try to make amends, because he really did go overboard telling Lucy off.

Comment ID #232607

@someone I really don’t think a taste of her own medicine is appropriate. It’s not like Lucy acted like such a jerk for malicious reasons, or anything. It sucks how she’s treated Mike, and even more so how he’s treating her, because he IS acting maliciously. Half the things he’d said to her when he exploded weren’t true, and he knows it. Chances are that Mike got carried away saying the most hurtful things he could think of to force Lucy to feel destroyed. It’s one thing if you push people away because you’re scared of being hurt. It’s quite another to intentionally pry apart someone’s insecurities in order to wound them for spite’s sake.
Think about it: the way Mike was able to accurately voice Lucy’s problems so smoothly shows that this wasn’t just some great epiphany he’d had after being in the dark…He had to have known how she’d felt for a long time. He just chose to ignore her feelings—just as he did to Daisy—until she tried actually getting closer to him.
Mike does this a lot, actually, and not just to Lucy (derailing/redirecting conversations when they’re too painful, talking down to Paulo and Abbey when they try to defend the other side of an argument, shutting down Daisy when she tries to open up to him, etc).
Granted, Lucy has her problems too. I’m just so tired of hearing everyone (in-comic and out) constantly regard Mike as though he’s completely blameless in this situation. I can understand why he doesn’t love Lucy back, but to sit there and meticulously explain, by name, why none of her friends is really her friend and that without him she will be left all alone with no one to love her? Heheh~ Finally caught back up, it had been like a year or so… Meeh~ But wow I am hooked again~ So I can’t wait for more to come out 8-D

But seriously, out of what I have read… Ouch… I mean I feel sorry for Lucy~ And the Lucy x Mike relationship reminds me of the way me and my friend Rhi chan~ used to be, (Of course when it comes to relationships I am more like Carson) I would get tired of her abusing me so I understand where Mike is coming from, but… There where alot of other ways he could of handled it…

@Niviae hit the nail on the head. thank-you so much!

She was a tomboy, which made her a little rough. Boys at that age usually played a little rough, so that really isn’t a big deal. But in addition she was confused and afraid, which made her act defensive and attempt to keep her distance, as well as show her affections more reluctantly and in less obvious or hidden ways. ( such as shoving, calling him a jerk, etc. )
You can see this backed in the last page, which showed her starting to relax, open up, and be openly friendly/content.
But then Mike ( probably unintentionally and unknowingly ) abandoned her for Sandy, which threw her into a setback, as well as affirming her worst fears and trashing her self-esteem, which brings us to the Lucy today:

nervous, insanely clingy, always afraid of being abandoned by/losing him again, terrible self-esteem, distant, “harsh”, guarded, defensive, “angry”, showing affections through insults instead of admitting how much she cares, etc.

As someone who’s been through the exact same thing to a t, I’ve actually also reacted in the same way.
She’s being sulky like a child in a sense. She’s angry at him for being so darn love-able. As she puts it, “You’re a jerk [ for making me love you ].”
But she would never say the last bit, she says it with her actions instead.
Her actions make it insanely obvious how she really feels, and everyone knows it if they stop being judgmental jackwagons and look at it with an open mind.

@termania,
Actually taeshi did say that, she says at the beginning of this chapter it takes place before chapter 48, supposedly it’s a prologue to jess and rachels chapter (which is supposed to take place during the summer vacation) which was previewed in the previous chapter here. That’s why i surmised it had to be chapter 41 or earlier because chapter 42 “invitation” is the start of the vacation arc.

@strider
The first page of this chapter reads:

“IT BEGINS

Yes, this is the vaunted “new chapter” - it’s the prologue to Starting Over. 32 pages of Jessica and Rachel that’ll take place after the end of the Summer Vacation arc. ”
AFTER…. am I missing something here?

I hope Lucy does one day realise she dose not need Mike in order to stand on her own feet and becomes more confidante as a result. That will show a great deal of growth on her part :)

Though I do want Mike to apologies and be her best friend again, if he won’t return her feelings he can at LEAST be her close friend like always!

Well, we’re still ten pages away from the conclusion, but I’ve really gotta say:
This might be the best recap that I’ve ever seen. As in “of everything, ever”.

@Termania,
Yeah you missed this “When the chapter is published we’ll move all the pages back into the archive (before Pick Me Up)”. she stated where it’s being put, chronologically it’s before chapter 48 Pick me up.

ever notice that Lucy and Sandy have bows? just in different places?

DarkFoxNinja November 9, 2012, 9:46 PM EST.

Comment ID #232623

@DarkFoxNinja: uhh I hope that was a joke. It would make sense since we don’t see Sandy and Lucy together often, Lucy has her pink ribbon Mad Lucy and Sandy has her blue bow :D. Amaya also has a bow and it is red :x. Stacy also has a bow :love:. As you can see I like stating little observations it keeps my mind focused and helps me feel smart :).

Comment about this page: Everybody is smiling yay! 8-D oh wait… this won’t end well. Mike your going to learn a hard lesson, it is called love hurts ;_;. @Taeshi: loved the artwork in both comic pages… your so nice.

@Taeshi, this has been a cool chapter, we all know the story but it has a Lucy twist that we never heard before. We heard it from Mike, talking about how sorry he is. However, she has never said, or in this case thought, anything about the whole series of events. Way to go, can’t wait to see Monday’s update!

This page goes a ways to explain and even justify the way Lucy behaves currently (and I think that’s what most readers want; justification for her behavior).
So soft and tender, so lonely and wanting for a friend at a young age, only to face rejection from multiple groups because she didn’t “play by the norms”.
Having found that one person (Mike) who was a nice and accepting person who did become her friend explains why she became so clingy; she was afraid of losing the only friend she had outside of her home. Having that person (Mike) drawn away from her unintentionally by Sandy (I’m sure she wasn’t trying to seduce Mike) has serious repercussions for someone like Lucy. It makes sense for Lucy to jump to the conclusion that Mike didn’t care about her anymore, when they could’ve in fact all have been friends (why not share the friendship, instead of isolating it?).
Lucy being the type of person who shells up all her feelings didn’t tell Mike his lack of attention hurt her and Mike being who he is assumed Lucy was okay.
God, I used to be like Lucy so much it hurts in a funny and painful way. I used to assume the way people acted was intentional and that I should react to those actions, when in fact those actions could be unintentional or oblivious to whatever I was feeling or thinking.
Oddly enough, I think Lucy needs to ease up and Mike needs to sharpen up.

To tell the truth then I think Mike is makeing a big mistake… I mean… I understmand that he is in love with Sandy but oh come on!! Lucy has been there for your hole life and sandy was for just a little more than a year!!! Finally when Lucy told him what she feels you just say no?! Just move on already!!! I just love it when Lucy and Mike are together but I think Mike is being seriously un-fair with Lucy saying that Lucy makes him sad every time he sees her… Y not just talk about this and agree to be nice to each other or something??? I really hope the next comic will come out soon… I luv them :D

PS: My fav charater is Lucy… juct saying Mad Lucy

I love the relationships Lucy has with her pets. It truly is a family dynamic where Lily is the supportive one that is always looking for Lucy’s best interests whether she likes it or not. Yashy is light-hearted and crude at times but loves Lucy none-the-less…and then of course there’s Blur and Chirpy who are sort of like her brother and sister :). It’s interesting that we see this family connection more with her pets than her mum and brothers.

@Iris Nah, we just don’t get to see the parents of anyone all that much in this series. Even siblings and so on.
Anyone not directly involved with the circle of friends or whatever the current plot is don’t appear. Because they don’t have any importance to the here and now, I guess.

Ya know, this been bugging me for a while. So, I’m gonna ask and see if anyone can answer/explain to me: What does Mike see in Sandy? Now, allow me to elaborate. We see that Sandy is a cute girl, she is nice (i.e giving Mike the scarf and well food), but beyond that. I can’t find anything to like about her. We see that she is pretty much forced to be Miss Perfect because of her watch dog mother, and she breaks down faster than a Twix bar if anything goes in her perfect world. So, what exactly does Mike see in her. I really wanna know.

Kanashe November 11, 2012, 11:23 AM EST.

Comment ID #232643

Well. I’m starting to wonder (after reading some comments) if Mike loved Lucy as a substitute while Sandy was gone. Considering the fact that both wear ribbons… :nope:

Anyway, on a side note, Lucy is seriously trying her best to sort her feelings out and make things (seem) clear to herself and understand her situation. I can somehow (and many others can, apparently by the other comments here) relate to how she feels. Or maybe I’m more like Mike but anyway, self-denial is one of the first steps into changing oneself- Be it in a good way or bad way. I just hope that she’ll be able to clear things up between her and Mike and that said boy would at least stop being so harsh and at the least, forgive her and be friends with her again. :(

Great job anyway on the scenes, the feels is too much. D:

I have no sympathy for Lucy…none what so ever…all Mikey is trying to do is live his life…she is forever the victim..despite her treating EVERYONE like crap. Took Mikey snapping and bringing some cold reality for Lucy to do some real reflecting…next he needs to put Paulo in his place, cause he keeps f’n up too.
