This came out pretty nicely.
I think I know why she is so verbally abusive towards Mike. (unless I’m reading too deeply into it). Think of this from a psychological pov. I believe it’s a combination of the “Guilty accuser” and “repeat it ‘till it’s true” mindsets.
I believe, subconsciously, she is trying to belittle him so that his worth to her diminishes. What she REALLY thinks is stupid is her feelings for him. and as time goes on and her feelings grow, causing her to lash out more in an attempt to make him worthless to her so she can justify her feelings as being “stupid”. At least until more recently when she could no longer deal with it in that manner. I also believe that the same holds true for her actions towards Paulo, but to a lesser extent.
Take it for what you will. *shrugs* I’m no expert in psychology. They’re just my observations.

Wow, I literally started reading bscb two days ago and I’m already hooked. This chapter (and arc for that matter) is getting to me. I was originally a mike x lucy shipper, but now? Is that really what is best for the both of them? After all of this pain will they be able to forgive each other?
I’m also getting a little mad at some of the comments on here, she isn’t being spiteful…she’s just upset. She is recalling one of the most disturbing moments for her and saying if she’d never cared about mike, maybe she wouldn’t have experienced it. Of course she doesn’t mean it that way, but she is in a lot of pain right now, and regret. All we can hope for is that she realizes what she is doing to both herself and mike, and keep away for a while.
I honestly hope there is some way to salvage their friendship.

@ All the people saying Lucy was pulled in-
Lucy was NOT pulled in by holding the branch! Lucy ended up letting go when she almost fell in. She then watched Mike hit a rock that knocked him out after he screamed her name. She went to the bottom of the waterfall and after Yashy pointed out his body floating out of the waterfall she was telling herself she didn’t know how to swim but Mike was going to drown and die and she needed to save him! Go back and read “Troubled Waters”! Seriously! She even tried to tell herself over and over that she didn’t know how to swim and she could drown and be rational but she felt she had to save his life.
At this point Lucy is not being resentful, she’s honestly trying to make herself not care. She’s trying to give herself back some independence and tell herself she doesn’t need him to be happy. It’s a part of her own defense mechanism, if she doesn’t care she can’t be hurt, right? At least that is what she is trying to tell herself right now. If she doesn’t care, it won’t hurt so much when Mike does pull away.
She was there for Mike when Mike lost Sandy, but Mike abused that, rather drastically abused that. He kept trying to pretend that Lucy was Sandy. How do you think you would feel if the person you care about is pretending you are someone else? I would be pretty damn ******, and depressed, and I bet for Lucy it just further implies that she will never be good enough for Mike compared to Sandy.
For those who think Lucy was a bitch for pushing Mike away in “December” when he came onto her? Did you consider the fact he had pretended she was Sandy before? Why wouldn’t she push him away if she is afraid that she is once again just the second-best closest replacement for Sandy?
Food for Thought.
