Mike is overreacting. Lucy doesn’t see this and thinks she has lost her best friend. Because Lucy never tries to reconnect with Mike because she thinks he simply hates her, Mike will eventually lose interest in pursuing her friendship.

Ive always had this feeling that Mikes internal conflict is more based upon that its not that he doesnt feel anything for Lucy, but he just cant believe that her feelings are sincere. He seems more convinced that she just thinks her “dependence” on him is love. I believe that if she had proven herself more not only on her feelings but her emotional stability, he would have been shaken a bit more and undecisive to actualy reject Lucy on spot.

This is exactly how the relationship between me and another another girl is right now.
