@Lariat Yeah, I know girls that are like that. Most situations I think it’s kinda skeezy, not unrealistic.

In this context, it’s understandable. She has liked him for a while, can’t get pregnant, and cats and dogs do not have many communicable diseases. On top of that, it’s not just an empty drive-in movie, it’s an empty drive-in classy movie. Which is actually a pretty neat (I wouldn’t do it there if it were the first time with a partner, but I’m picky.) And she’s doing it on the first date, which follows a pattern of ill behaviour on the part of the cheerleaders. Paulo does not have money, is socially clueless, and has no plans or ideas for the dates at all. It puts the girls in a poor light standards wise.

I also recognize that the plot does need to advance, and showing the relationships forming over the course of several strips would waste a few comics and soften paulo’s thoughtless playboy image. If the girls need to be shown as more conscientious it can be emphasized later on anyway. But they’ll already have cat herpes by then and it’ll be too late, won’t it?

So he’s bagged two girls, both on their first date, both having the girl being the aggressive one and both of those girls are best friends. Evil plot?

@Lariat apparently the same way I forgot to point out that in addition to all that other stuff, they don’t seem to be wearing protection. Paulo is too stupid to have brought anything, nothing is implied, and he was rushed into the act both times. So cat herpes is a sure thing now (or at the very least cat papillomavirus (CPV)) . Probably everybody on the cheerleading squad except for daisy has it (or will when paulo is finished with this arc)

I am still amused by the fact that Paulo, the womanizer, has so far been pounced by no fewer than four women. I’m not going to obsess over what Paulo and Rachel have done, are doing, or might do. It seems that I have about fifty people to do that for me. However, I will say that if the author states that she is “still very much PauloxRachel,” that may be something to consider. Unless it is a red herring. In which case, ignore it. But I am not inclined to believe that it is a red herring.

Anyway, I like the fact that the dialogue for this page is pretty minimal. Taeshi definitely knows how to tell a (visual) story without cramming it full of silly words.

Also, paulo isn’t the only person being a **** in these last few comics. Mind both girls have dated him only once. As far as standards go, what they’re doing isn’t really wrong (or it wouldn’t be if it didn’t step on the emotions of everybody who actually cares about paulo,) but they’re lacking in foresight. They’re doing what they want without thinking about potential consequences. First there’s the issue of cat herpes, second there’s the issue of paulo hurting the feelings of the girls he turned down. (the important girls he actually cares about and yet chose not to sleep with in favour of the girls he hardly knows)

Lastly, there’s the fact that they don’t intend this relationship to last long anyway, but are committing themselves to the greatest level of physical intimacy. If you give yourself to people you don’t care about you’re not going to be worth as much for somebody important. A valuable thing becomes less so when it loses its rarity, no?

Now that I have read all the comic and have gotten a better grasp on things in it I can give my opinion on Paulo.

While Paula was in the whole “Playah” mindset and acting he got lots of girls but nothing really serious and maybe a good bit of grief. He got out of it for a short time because of Tess and then showed how much he had matured when he didn’t sleep with Lucy when she basically threw herself at him. Now he’s trying to get with as many girls as he possibly can again and is getting a whole lot of grief Tess and Lucy.

If he’d stay serious instead of being an idiot he might actually be pretty happy.

Man, I’m so tired. I haven’t gotten a break all week until today. First I was sick until Saturday, Friday I had a dress rehearsal and Saturday I got really nervous for my tap dance at the recital.
