How easy you forget that Paulo stopped her several times…

Trust me on this, I know from experience how easily people can decide to get in bed with someone when they’re upset.

A few pages ago Lucy was in need of comfort, but was also looking for self-validation… She was turned down by the one person who had stuck by her for her entire life, and told he hated her at that.

Paulo would almost certainly have bed her in her mind, and that would have given her a brief moment of satisfaction, knowing that at least someone wanted her. Of course she would, and in this bifurcated arc does, regret it.

Also, it isn’t simply a daydream… it’s a What If that was sparked by Paulo’s daydream… He’s not imagining himself as a ‘crying wuss’ as he would no doubt put it… His imagination is probably not this accurate.

What If’s are sort of like flashbacks to things that never happened. Actual memories or retellings of things never to have existed.

On a similar note, this whole comic could be considered a What If if you stretch the definition a bit.


Regardless of everything said here… This guy is just glad to have found a girl to take him away from all that tumultuous turmoil of sexual angst and drama…

Another Path is a ‘What If’ side arc depicting what would have happened if Paulo had given in to Lucy’s distraught and misguided come-ons and had sex with her.

The morning after they both run to school, passing Paulo’s dad, leaving him slightly confused.

Paulo compliments Lucy during class which suddenly brings to mind the fact that she’s just had unprotected sex with him.

She’s freaking out about being pregnant (which is entirely possible and she’s right to worry).

Paulo decides to at least try to be responsible after-the-fact and drags Lucy(literally) off to tell his father about it and get advice.

They return to Paulo’s home and say hello to his father. The father gives them a stern look before lightening up and offering them a seat (This is a mock-angry look)

Lucy and Paulo are understandably nervous about what they have to tell him, but try to be as calm and normal as possible.

They sit for a moment and just as the Father is about to ask how their school-day was Paulo loses his composure and blurts out that he’s “****ed upppp!!!” as he puts it.

Lucy, who is either embarrassed, frightened, ashamed or all of the above, covers her face

somebody named syd is confused and I try to explain what is happening to them, finishing with this very sentence.

Or to be brief, Lucy if frightened she may be pregnant, and Paulo is absolutely terrified, but was trying to hide it.

I know it could be a very serious issue, but both are treating a what if issue as fact.

*shrug* For the context that this is a daydream she likely is, so he feels better that he did the right thing, etc

hello. i am going to make a fool of myself on the internet with a general tl;dr critique here I go:

first, let me say that you’re improving. there’s no doubt about it, and i know you’re a busy person. so extra practice might not be much of an option. i think, at this stage, it’s important to look into improving things someone won’t notice right away the first time they read the page. you mentioned working harder on backgrounds, which is a great start. i highly recommend looking into a few art classes, whenever you have the time. not to sound harsh, but you need it. i’m not trying to rush you or anything, but consider it. perspectives matter, even in a dialogue-centric comic. it’s very difficult to get a more solid grasp on perspectives, and other techniques like foreshortening, etc, without some guidance.

picking a chapter out of the blue: say from New Beginnings, page 5 you attempted bgs, and pulled them off very nicely. in page 2 of the same chapter, you attempted a bg in the last panel but the perspective killed you, making abbey look like he’s standing against a backdrop of a skidded car in a parking lot, instead of inside the scene. it’s evidence you can do a lot, but you don’t completely understand perspective yet (understandably!), and might not by yourself without help.

if you know of a specific art teacher, you might be able to see if you can talk to them about offering advise on your comic pages. he/she could offer quick tips, and could help teach horizon lines and vanishing points - which can benefit you a lot, it’s helpful with bgs!

if not, maybe looking up anatomy tutorials can help as well. it’s not like i want you to draw in like, painstaking detail, but, well, things like hands are difficult. every artist (including myself) struggles with them. take a blank sheet, and just draw your free hand in different poses. doing this often helps understand them some more, so when you apply this knowledge in cartoon-format, it won’t end up looking rushed, or something you want readers to gloss over.. or like “sporks” (as a forum member poked fun at, once).
an example would be the first panel of THIS page… get suitcase to pose in that position, hell, even try out a still life like that. you’d then be able to see that paulo’s father is not pointing the remote in the right location of where he’s looking (the remote is pointed at us, dead-on), and the angle of the hand is off. the thumb is awkwardly pointing to the right, instead of resting on top of the control. these types of errors make the comic a little awkward to read, even if it’s minute, and not the main focus of the page.

to conclude, i hope you do not think i’m trying to make you think i’m better than you. no, not at all! i just would like to offer some help is all. you’ve made lots of progress, and are continuing to work hard at this - it’s impressive! I just hope, when you have more free time, you can consider my two cents.

@ bank: Yes, yes you are. I’m sure this is useful information to Taeashi somehow, but considering it hardly contains any relevance to this particular page, it might have been better to email this to her directly rather than call her out on her ‘flaws’ in public.

Now, what i like about this particular webcomic (and i’m sure there are plenty of people who agree with me here) is that it doesn’t *have* to be a graphic masterpiece to tell it’s story. The trials and tribulations of the cast are told so well that the comic grips you by the throat and is unwilling to let you go. If anything, this gives Taeashi as much space as she’d like to improve in her own pace, without it being of any consequence to the overall quality of the comic.

Well so much for my Paulo’s maturing stage theory.

Hey, it’s still pretty damn mature for him to even tell his dad.

I’ve been reading this for a while and have never posted a comment… that always happens to me.

Anyway, I commend Paulo for holding together for as long as he has - staying strong for a friend is kind of hard sometimes, especially when the friend really needs it at the moment. Paulo, you’re such a sweetie

Also, after re-reading the page, I notice now that Paulo’s dad looks a lot scarier than he really is o.o;;

All I hear in the last line is an echo from Band of Brothers after Popeye gets shot in the rear and all he’s saying is, “I’m sorry I ****ed up!”

I’m going to point out something a lot of very prominent artists do… Particularly in manga where the pages are black and white…

In a large number of cases, the backdrops for certain scenes don’t particularly need to change all that much… So many artists sit down and draw one or two very careful (and usually pretty large) designs of a room/place from one or two different angles…

These backdrops are then inserted and re-sized into many of the frames in order to add some detail without a lot of extra work.

Personally I don’t see backgrounds as an issue with this comic. The focus is on the characters and they rarely comment on what’s going on with that bench over there or the oddly shaped tree that wasn’t drawn… The FLCL manga was much like that… however most of the time the characters weren’t even fully drawn in that…

So I suggest designing a few places and taking some time to draw some fairly large pics of just those places when you get a chance. (Pick the spots you’ll use a lot, like the school hallway, classroom, cafeteria… the woods, peoples rooms… )

Considering the art style of this comic (which initially I didn’t care for but has grown on me quite a bit as it continues to be refined) I don’t think you really even need to be very detailed with the surroundings. Just a chair here, something specific on the table in Lucy’s kitchen, a pic on the wall in Paulo’s house… You don’t need to add too much texture to objects or tiny little scratches on every cinder-block…

It won’t save you from needing to draw a background from a new angle now an then… but it will be something you can drop into the back of a frame in photoshop (or whatever) and make the page look that much more finished.



I do have a slightly unrelated question though… What… what exactly is Yashy? A turtle? All the birds have pointy beak parts on there faces… And while I could believe Yashy was a turtle easily enough, I’ve never seen her with a shell…

when I saw the word “awkward”, I instinctively searched for David :p

To everyone that wants to bad moth Taeshi’s work (IE. Sciver, bank & anyone else)

Unless you can make your own comic, keep up with so many charters, have a kick *** story line and have it last 4+ years, shut the hell up. 

Most comics that are online die within two years since the writer doesn’t think the story line through and they get real bad writers block, skip there updates and the comic dies a slow painful death. 

Taeshi knows her faults, and doesn’t need people to point them out on every page. The comic is hers so she can grow as a writer and/or artist, and she can do what ever she wants in the world she created. I don’t mean to knock on Taeshi’s earlier work but like any great comic, the story and artwork have gotten better over the past few years. 

So unless you have a comic that’s lasted a few years, has a great story line, even better charter development, and update three times a week or more… Shut the hell up. 

Somehow, I totally saw this coming. Paulo was waaay too calm in the last few pages. Awesome. xD

I have no idea what Yashy is either, but I’m pretty sure she claimed to be a Yoshi at one point. I pegged her as a sort of…duck-like…thing. >3>

Vincent: It’s not bad-mouthing, it’s just constructive criticism (in the case of Sciver). Such criticism helps artists grow and improve. So chill out. Really.

Umlaut: I do agree with you to a point, but when it’s gone on for the last few pages people just need to be told to stop and/or to shut the hell up.

I agree with Vincent. I just finished reading from the first chapter up too here. I find amazingly how long this web comic has lasted(Reading the dates), and so far this is the best drama comic I read in my whole life. Thou Critism sometimes does help an Artist grow.

Hey, for teenagers, that’s what parents are for : to go to when you have completely screwed up and are freaking out because you don’t know what to do any more and you need help.

They are on the road to independence but they are not there yet, and they need their parents most when they get lost on the way.
