Look Thanatos, I agree with you that Lucy’s got issues, but Mike wasn’t exactly being polite about the rejection, let’s face it. Even though I don’t think that he at all is wrong in his actions, I at least can admit his attitude has been negative as of late… well other than the phone thing.

Anyways, I don’t get why you hate Paulo so much. Sure he acts like a pretentious guy, but his jerkishness is only skin deep. He’s proven time and time again that he has a great deal of integrity and that he truly cares for his friends. Also, i don’t know what comic you were reading, but Lucy and Paulo did not do the deed. She came onto him, and he behaved like a complete gentlemen and REFUSED to take advantage of her.

This is a webcomic, do not get over emotional because is silly and useless, second they had no sex, read your chapters better and get your information straight, third Paulo is only expressing his old crush on her and has all the rights to do so, fourth Lucy as annoying as she can be was just acting that way because she is a girl who had 13 when that happened. Emotionally she was afraid and rather scared that their relationship might change, that and she could have been not interested in a romantic relationship.

While Lucy is a bitch to Mike, Mike ended up being a jerk to her, both not dealing with the issue maturely, as every other teenager..

I don’t think we have to see this in a LucyxMike vs. LucyxPaulo light. I’m really hoping this is gonna end with a dissolution of some of the LucyxPaulo tension.

I don’t think she should be with either personally. Mike has a classic martyrdom complex, he would always keep taking the pain while complaining in a halfhearted way so it was never resolved, and then when given the chance, blow-up about it and pretend your so great. Also the whole Sandy thing is a delusion on both sides. They haven’t actually hung out in how many years? During the times in your life that you change the most? Occasional letters and phone conversations aren’t enough, people are changing to much and to quickly at that part of their life. Mike and Sandy don’t really know each other any more. They can’t love each other, they just love the idea.


Paulo is the hero, in my eyes, hes a bit brainless and immature at times, playfully acts like a jerk, but really is rather sensitive and noble in the end. But him and lucy… I just don’t see it.

She doesn’t need a hero., she needs a friend. A relationship is always nice but unnecessary. Obviously I hope she finds one one day (that sounds weird when discussing a comic but…), she needs friends more. The crazy gruff semi-depressed antisocial types are usually helped by that. I should know, friends keep you sane, and eventually drunk, which is about as good happy when happiness can’t be found. Relationships are nice, but the drama here is too much for Lucy’s type. Us asocial people have a hard enough time dealing with people in a easy going setting, drama is just too much to handle.

(This of course assumes a lot about Taeshi’s method of development for these characters. Obviously I’m talking about people, so if the author has no significant familiarity with the asocial then the decisions Lucy makes are based on a different psychology and my point is completely moot. Lets just keep reading?)

personally..I’m not sure what I ship.
At first it was all MikexLucy 4EVAR…then things changed, it then went to PauloxLucy then LiamxLucy (mildly) and I am curious where this friendship with Augustus is going..but I don’t trust him considering what I’ve seen of him.
In the end I just want Lucy to be happy.
Though I don’t think I’ll ever ship MikexLucy again for multiple reasons.
1. Mike’s deluded himself into thinking that his ‘over the phone’ relationship is REAL when it’s not…like other people here keep stating they’ve never met eachother in person for YEARS
2. Lucy kinda screwed it up with the whole ‘jerkface’ thing, I know she did it to cover up her feelings but that sorta thing doesn’t bode well with men since she was giving him mixed messages.
3. How he rejected her. I know he had a few reasons to do so but still, it was pretty bloody harsh.
and finally 4. his behavior of late. lately he’s done NOTHING to support her and has childishly ignored Lucy as if she doesn’t exist at all. Lucy looks so *cough* cute in the shopping cart. Lucy’s smile looks somewhat odd in the last panel though, I know she’s sick but I think it’s her whiskers-beard thing. Her right whisker beard thing is in front of her face in the perspective as opposed to it being on the side of her face or behind like it usually is.

Love the Paulo x Lucy pairing - first started reading the comic during 59. Another Path and I adore how affectionately he thinks of Lucy. Reminds me of me if I had the balls to speak to girls.

With all this Paulo and Lucy bonding going on in the recent chapters, I think shes genuinely going to fall for him. She “likes” him, but maybe it’ll escalate to “love”.
Of course, in the making of that emotional decision, she’ll be conflicted with thoughts about Mike, and his recent behavior towards her and stuff

Dear master of modesty, I couldn’t agree more. She does need a friend. Like i said b4 i realy relate to paulo. Can be cocky yet trys to do the right thing. Any minut that he can spend with her makes him feel like a million bucks though lucy feels worthless due to her bi polor depreshion. I lived this tale of bitter sweet candy lol. I had a mike, a daisy, david, lucy ext……… I’m just saying she needs him. Heck if they r lucky anoff that friendship will blossom and she will finnaly have the confidence that with him or not she can get by. Lucy is strong. let’s see, first he had sex with tess, even if it wasn’t “all the way”, heavy petting is still sex in my eyes.

then he had sex with lucy, again, maybe not “all the way”, but still sex all the same… except in “another path”, where he really did go all the way with her.

then he had sex with jessica, and then rachel… all the way.

the only scene paulo was involved in that i actually liked, was during the vacation when everyone thought he and mike had sex, because everyone’s expressions were priceless.

lucy still has that obsession with mike, since she wants to get to the rehearsal just so she can kiss him… probably just so she can pretend to hate it, and then treat him like trash in the end, again.

that’s another thing… lucy doesn’t put her feelings out there because she’s afraid of rejection, but then she constantly rejected mike when he put his feelings out there, and she gets upset when she’s finally on the rejecting side?

she has no right… she deserves all the pain she gets.

But who entirely is right when they’re not sure about themselves? If you think about it, Lucy was probably struggling with unrequited emotions since Sandy first came and went. She didn’t want to get too close to Mike, lest that happen again. She’s grown up confused, in love but unable to fulfill it out of fear.

And not just fear of rejection, but fear of hurting Mike or Sandy, who were both her dear friends.

And on the topic of Paulo, I need to give him credit. Since Jasmine came along, he’s changed for the better. He’s stuck to his promise to take it slow with her and has actually become a likable, respectable man; not some egotistical playboy with a mild superiority complex.

You’re looking at only the negatives and, even then, only on the least broad scope you can possibly find. However, I do agree with you on the idea of Lucy growing strong. I could see her venturing out, remaining a lone, individual woman… Or, better yet, finding a love further down the road. Not someone she needs to rely on, but someone to simply share life with her and bring about good times.

In the end, we can only broaden our views and look at this from all angles. We can’t create the story, nor can we see into the character’s minds. Assuming Lucy did those things without a reason is a step too far. And the same goes for Paulo. People have done more reckless things when lost in the throes of sorrow.

Oh, I so need to get in on this “who’ll end up with who” and psychoprofiling thing you long-winded types have got going on.

It’s highschool drama. Realistically none of the relationships will work out in the long run. I know it’s a comic and it’s not realistic because they’re talking cats, so probably some relationships will work out and there’ll be resolution for the OTL stuff and all that. But, seriously, this whole conversation just puts me in mind of the end of Skins season 2 (Original, superior, UK version). I won’t spoilers it, but… high school ends. People move away. Stuff happens.

I’m totally on board with the idea that Lucy should end up alone. She has serious co-dependency issues she needs to sort out and I don’t see her and Mike working out without some massive change to each of them, they’re just so obviously and massively wrong for each other right now. Basically, my vision of an awesome ending would be Lucy finishes school and moves far, far away to Europe or something to find herself or some **** like that. Maybe Greenland.

Paulo won’t end up with Jasmine, either, that’s a no-brainer. But for him to be lumped with the “I’m so helpless but don’t help me” Lucy just seems like it’d be a cruel twist of fate (aka Taeshi). Look at Lucy, the only reason this story arc is even happening is because she’s so focused on being with Mike that she’s overlooking her own wellbeing. Paulo’s always been the nice guy she ignores, while Mike’s the nice guy she mistreats.

By my (and, I’d venture, most people’s) count, Paulo has had sex a total of two times. Both times were initiated by the girls, not by him. Both (older) girls were using him to get to Tess. By being an adolescent male presented with an opportunity for ‘uncomplicated,’ ‘consequence-free’ sex, Paulo has only demonstrated a lack of foresight - as a teenager, that’s kind of par for the course. He’s done nothing wrong, and any harm he’s caused has been by accident. He’s basically just a bit thoughtless. The fact that Lucy getting them into this predicament by getting on the bus when Paulo got distracted showboating kinda makes my point.
I reckon at the end of this chapter Jasmine’ll accuse him of being thoughtless, too. Doesn’t make him a dick, though. Just adolescent (and definitely not deserving of being killed by a speeding truck).

Wow thanks master of modesty. He started this debate. Ehem. Like i said be for this is a comic so every one is open to opinion. But now that were in to it let me clear something up. When i said she needs a man, i ment it like u’d say: she don’t need no boy she needs a man. I Think lucy is better by her self right now. The age they r all in emotions and feelings go up and down like a rollor coaster.

As for Paulo ya, just like me when he met jazzie he changed. He was always charming but it can upset people at times men and women. In my life girls liked me. If i dated them and hurt them i’m an *******. If i let them off easy, i’m an *******. So when u reach a point where your not trying to be the ****, it comes accross more noble. My ex gf and i 1 year and a half, people saw the change in me. I have a friend just like lucy and she was not happy. I’m curous to c lucy go down the path the girl i know did. Its the only ending I’ll accept.

I don’t know if I like all the Paulo x Lucy from lately, but I have to say that Paulo has shown amazing character development. Once I thought Lucy was too good for him. Now I’m not sure that’s my opinion anymore.

The one “Paulo trait” I’m curious to see worked on in the comics is his sheer terror of barking. I know childhood trauma can be tough to recover from and that the guy’s still a boy (ok, a sophomore… whatever) but, really, it would kick major *** if he could get a grip on his phobia for the sake of something important.

And, just for the fun of shipping, this something could be Lucy. Or Tess. Heck, it could be both, the mixed signals would be fun to sort out for months afterwards.

For some reason, I really like this story.
