His face in the last panel looks like he is ready for it though…

I have a feeling Mike would react that way, but I didn’t expect him to play The Game. Also congrats on your 600 book goal.

Aaaaw, I really want them to be together. Also, WHY NO TEAM LUCY BADGES IN STORE?!?!?!?!?!

Why doesn’t mike like Lucy at all any more? What ever happened to “let’s jus be friends”?

Happy real life birthday Lucy!
Aww Mike, you’re opening up a little bit at a time aintcha? lol
‘Sides, you know damn well you want to spend time with SOMEONE instead of being alone. Suck it up for a few rounds ya big baby.
Kroth November 7, 2011, 12:06 PM EST.
Needs more Paulo. Lucy is too much of an oblivious self centered woman. She blew her chance and there is no going back now. It’s painfully clear that this will never go anywhere. Stupid woman.

Mike, common man be a good sport. Lucy is trying so hard. I’m glad she’s not so down. I think Mike is going to enjoy playing the game and forget his anger for a little bit.
But then Sandy will call and all will be lost.
Minty Lime Green November 7, 2011, 12:31 PM EST.
wow, 600 books sold, great job guys that’s a lot of books sold and a lot of money earned anyway, lets see how this whole video game thing goes, i hope it turns out well for Lucy and Mike!! then again, its only 16/40 pages, so who knows what’s bound to happen ?
sigh... November 7, 2011, 12:37 PM EST.
The faces have been weird every so often in this new style. In particular, last panel of last page and 3rd panel of this page.

Rose November 7, 2011, 1:21 PM EST.
i keep getting this weird feeling that everyone exept mike and lucy are gonna go grocery shopping or something and then the snows gonna trap them there alone and their gonna make up
Steve November 7, 2011, 1:48 PM EST.
I have the feeling we will find out why he has been a complete *** soon. I agree with a Sandy call interfering with this game and turning this situation on its head.
Lucy is really trying hard to at least rescue whatever is left of her friendship, and that is quite admirable. Whether she believes she has no longer any hope of getting mike to love her remains to be seen tho…. I personally wish that there was hope for mikexlucy (if mike stops being a jerk). Altho Sandy seems far too sweet to be eliminated from the equation by choice… so somehow it’ll be either that she grows even more distant somehow or some tragic circumstances cut her off from mike.
Delta November 7, 2011, 1:49 PM EST.
It’s doubtful, but a heart to heart discussion would be really nice this chapter. Too bad it’s hard for either of them to talk seriously without getting into a huge brawl. Mike doesn’t want to be sucked back into Lucy’s issues, so his guard is up. Lucy still doesn’t like to look vulnerable, so her subtle attempts to get Mike talking won’t be nearly enough.
People are saying Mike doesn’t deserve Lucy, when in fact they both have been insensitive dicks. I think this behavior only further cements how much these two deserve to be stuck with each other. I like this story because no one’s a saint. Each of the cast has strengths and flaws, which makes them seem more human. I applaud Taeshi for refusing to make Mike or anyone else a one dimensional character.
Again, I doubt either of them will make any progress towards closing the gap between them. Taeshi DID say that this chapter would be an awful ride.
The Observer November 7, 2011, 1:51 PM EST.
I bet Lucy is gunna kick Mike’s *** in the game and then Mike well play over and over again until (which he won’t)
Candy November 7, 2011, 1:56 PM EST.
angry faces everywher..poor mike..
tara November 7, 2011, 1:59 PM EST.
@The Observer: DUDE! I applaude your perferct description. That should really be used to advertise this comic or something. It’s perfect! Also, about the comic. I never noticed how you drew all the fingers on the hand before, I know it’s a minor thing, but it’s still cool that you put that little bit to drawing a full hand, that’s awesome.
Dracain November 7, 2011, 2:05 PM EST.
The thing is, although they’ve both been jerks to one another, Lucy was doing it out of fear and insecurity. Mike has been doing it out of MALICE. He WANTS Lucy to feel bad, even though she never wanted to hurt him. The similarity between the two is that neither seems to feel guilty over what they did (and continue to do) to eachother. Lucy is upset not because she hurt Mike, but because Mike finally abandoned her. Mike isn’t upset about hurting Lucy at all, and is just angsting over himself.
If anything good comes out of this chapter, it’ll probably be Mike doing something even Lucy can’t forgive him for so she can finally get over him.
Sad November 7, 2011, 2:05 PM EST.
I really don’t know how I feel about this… Poor Lucy and Poor Mike ): I wish they would figure out their problems, but it’s so difficult for things like this to be fixed. What it might need is just some time…
Serene Heaven November 7, 2011, 2:09 PM EST.
I like to understand his last face as his “Game Face”, not as his “*** Face”. And if it is, it might be good for Mike to bond with someone other than Sandy, even if it is Lucy. Although I’m still trying to figure out how, relationship-wise, a Shakespearean Tragety can be avoided… at this point, I suspect multiple threesomes….
Anonymous November 7, 2011, 2:26 PM EST.

I’d love to see Sandy get tired of the distance, lonely, and end up with someone else. Cheated but didn’t intend to cheat but did anyway. *shrug* She’s too saintly for my tastes right now.
Truth? November 7, 2011, 2:28 PM EST.
Or a few games… Anyway, I like Mike, because he’s a complete BAMF, in case anybody forgot the times he risked his life to save Lucy, but the size of the pipe rammed up his *** is going to be immortalized in song for millenia to come.
404 not found November 7, 2011, 2:28 PM EST.
if kids simply said what was on their damn minds more often, relationships wouldn’t be so difficult like this.
lucy took forever to tell mike she loved him, and still won’t say a damn thing that she should… it isn’t hard!
“why do you hate me? can we never be friends again?” crap like that…
mike should tell her exactly why he’s angry at her, and why he’s behaving the way he is.
paulo should tell jasmine that he doesn’t give a flying crap about her, and only wants to screw lucy, or daisy… hell, he doesn’t even care about lucy as much as daisy according to that “ask BCB” answer.
jessica needs to tell lucy she is attracted to her, and rachel needs to go work on a street corner or strip club, if she’s gonna be a ****, she may as well get paid for it, so she can pay for treatment for the inevitable STDs to come.
but, i suppose having common sense makes you one-dimensional…

Doodleydoowop November 7, 2011, 2:35 PM EST.
I REALLY don’t like how this is turning out. Of course, it’s not, like, a problem with the story itself but as with… the characters, ya know? Just saying that Taeshi, Suitcase, and anyone else helping out is making a wonderful comic. BUT I don’t like how Lucy is handling this problem. As I’ve stated before, they need to talk; otherwise, it seems like they’re going to run themselves into a vicious cycle. In the past, they’ve used video games to get over their problems… and it seems those problems are still around or still lingering in their heads.
Missme November 7, 2011, 2:36 PM EST.

Hehe, the 8th panel seems to be betraying Mike’s actions even more
Lucy’s attempts are definitely starting to chip away at his harsh exterior; whether it’ll be enough, though, is left to be seen. As Observer put it, it may not be enough o.O

But whatever, they’ll eventually get something worked out (hopefully without TOO much discomfort )
I just never use his face. I like Blur!

Mike’s anguish is like a delightful jelly sandwich to me. Toasted bread, and butter too. Cranberry, I think. Cuz, you know… they’re bittersweet.
I must also remark that Lucy is finally getting the right idea. Kudos to her, unless she screws it up.
Dext November 7, 2011, 3:07 PM EST.
If mike had half a brain he would realise that whatever her plan is, she must have one to make the stakes so high. The result should have been an immediate schedualing of a meating at the librairy. One can only do what they beleive is the right thing when it feels wrong for so long I suppose.

And Lucy Wins
Silver the Dragon November 7, 2011, 4:07 PM EST.
Gotta get stuff off my mind so here it goes;
1. Mike is being this way to Lucy out of malice and spite. Lucy treated Mike the way she did out of insecurity and general playfulness. Teasing is such a thing. As far as I can tell, Lucy has never set out to purposely make Mike feel like he’s a piece of dirt and the world would be a better place without him. Nor has she ever stalked his relationships with other people to the point of pretending like she owns him and calls him pathetic and obvious for having relationships and friendships outside of herself. Mike is being an enormous jerk and bratty child. Lucy has been a bratty child at times as well, but never to this extreme extent.
2. No one ever forced him to be friends with Lucy; so if he hated her all these years he easily could have broke off the friendship early on. He just didn’t want to do so. He obviously liked being with Lucy regardless of her playful teasing and over all rudeness. Yes, Lucy has been bratty and annoying, but Mike didn’t seem to mind before.
3. Regardless if Lucy had confessed her feelings to Mike; I don’t think it would have mattered. They may have started dating, but the moment Sandy came back into the picture ever so remotely, I feel like Mike would have dumped Lucy quickly and early on. I firmly believe he used Lucy as a Sandy substitute for all these years. I think that’s the main reason he put up with her antics and that his current hate stems from inner turmoil rather than Lucy herself and her actions.
Overall neither Mike or Lucy are innocent parties in this. Lucy should have wised up long ago and stopped pinning over Mike and moved on. I don’t like her insecurity and inferiority complex (By the way a lot of people act mean and bratty due to inferiority and insecurity. This is not an excuse though.) in the least.
Although Lucy has never really been a horrible friend regardless of her complex and teasing nature. In the same sense, Mike had never been a horrible friend either until recently. Mike is being terribly cruel at this point. I hate new Mike, not old Mike. I wouldn’t even hate a Mike who wanted nothing to do with Lucy, but acted civil. At this point, Mike is being spiteful and taking out his anger on someone whom he thinks he has a right to do so. I’ve been in this situation before. A good friend of mine took out unjust rage on me out of her own fear of her relationship with her boyfriend. I tried my hardest to make the situation right, but she shut me out entirely and blamed me for everything in her life.
Shutting someone out and lashing out at that person unjustly isn’t the way to solve a problem. It only makes the situation worse. It makes the aggressor look like a horrible person and it makes the other party feel terrible and confused. No one wins in this situation.
This is why I hope that Mike and Lucy talk their problems out and agree to stay friends and realize they couldn’t ever be together for multiple reasons; not just Sandy. Both Mike and Lucy need to grow up immensely.
Minty Lime Green November 7, 2011, 4:08 PM EST.
Bait? What Bait?
Do you mean bait as in to bait him into interacting with her? Or is she going to exploit the situation somehow?

MIKE GAME FACE
Raven November 7, 2011, 4:21 PM EST.
@Minty Lime Green
I don’t think that is necessarily the case… Lucy wasn’t really a substitute to Sandy, as Mike had been always writing to her since she left for like 5 years until Lucy found out in 8th grade. I think Mike was trying to make a choice between them, it was either to take his childhood infatuation seriously or to confess his feelings for Lucy. He ignored Lucy early on when Sandy was still around but when she left, he began to create new memories with Lucy and began to like her.
The choice between the two girls were always there. But as the flashback in the Pillow Talk chapter shows, Lucy rejected Mike’s confession and Mike even said that “they might not be like this forever” hinting that he would seek out Sandy instead if Lucy did not return his feelings.
The resentment that Mike has for Lucy is compounded by her dependency and inability to accept the fact that she messed up all the chances she had to express her feelings for Mike when Mike was just waiting for her and standing by her side all those years. That and that Lucy’s insecurities meant that her only form of communication with mike was to beat him up and annoy the crap out of him.
Delta November 7, 2011, 4:21 PM EST.
I love Mike’s face in the 4th and 8th panels. (probably because they’re the same facial expression.)
StarSturdy November 7, 2011, 4:23 PM EST.
True, Mike warned her, but I feel like if Sandy had come back even if Lucy had accepted he would have left Lucy for Sandy. Not out of malice or anything, he just prefers Sandy. I don’t think Mike has true romantic feelings for Lucy.
It’s still my opinion that he used her as a substitute.
I also still feel like his resentment still stems from inner turmoil over his own insecurities with his relationship with Sandy and how he feels bad for using Lucy. He resents himself and the closest thing he has to take out his anger on is Lucy. She’s there and he feels bad. I believe his “pathetic” and “obviously using others as a substitute for me.” comments stem from his own actions. He used Lucy as one and therefore sees her as himself and it makes him angry. He doesn’t want to be the bad guy, but she is a constant reminder of what he has done and he hates it.
This is just my theory though.
Minty Lime Green November 7, 2011, 4:28 PM EST.
Oh, Lucy has such a way with manipulating Mike. Looks like Lucy won that battle.

Chillent November 7, 2011, 4:44 PM EST.
But if he didn’t have romantic feelings for her, then on the rare occasions when Lucy does show some feelings, like after the alley fight, Mike becomes completely speechless and proceeds to dream about her constantly and loses sleep over the mixed messages that Lucy was sending him.
Perhaps his resentment was also compounded by the fact that holiday with Tess, Acapulo or whatever… From his perspective, he was nothing more than a security blanket to Lucy, and that she would cling onto anyone who remotely shows any sign of support for her… and after being forced to reject her confession she then has that near disaster with Paolo and then going to Augustus afterwards. Both times made Mike furious inside yet unable to do anything about it since he had committed himself to Sandy and doesn’t want to give Lucy anymore false hope/not be tempted himself.
Delta November 7, 2011, 4:56 PM EST.
@Minty Lime Green & @Delta
I’m leaning more towards Delta in this conversation. Sandy is the embodiment of perfection (in her role as a girlfriend) in Mike’s point of view. He will never give her up until something in their relationship changes for the worse. When she left, he slowly bonded with Lucy over time through their experiences (Confrontation). Then, when a letter arrives from Sandy he starts to feel guilty about his feelings for Lucy and talks to Sandy over the phone. He tells her everything, “confessing” about his feelings and then no longer feels as much of a attachment to Lucy. He still does not show his resentment of her until she tells him that she loves him, where he rejects her as a way of avoiding the emotional confusion he had before he got into regular contact with Sandy. Yes, he is frowing a lot of his resentment unjustly towards Lucy, however his feelings towards her where not always negative (page 4 of “Unfit for Education”)
The Swimmer November 7, 2011, 5:04 PM EST.
Hey, the Swimmer, you do know that Mike totally mastered that move, right? Also, I sense a “we played video games so now the angst session is kind of over” moment. At least, I hope it’s that.

I predict some slow development of feelings between them, similar to what happened when Paulo was making Lucy feel better in Pick Me Up (at least i think thats the chapter )
I just hope at least they blow SOME steam off, they’re such an odd pair, yet fit like a puzzle
Sandvich November 7, 2011, 6:06 PM EST.
Sandy is a core character right? not a fan-based character right?
Because that would be a massive hint in itself as to how things workout if she was a fan-based character.

Ah… games. The cause of - and solution to - all of life’s problems.
And congrats on the 600! Achievement unlocked - 600 books sold!
But I have to say, I’m a little disappointed with the banner. Mike reaches Sandy and that’s it? Couldn’t… I dunno… a talking banana have attacked him or something? Big build-up. Kinda disappointing resolution. But I suppose the point was to INDICATE book sales. It wasn’t an incentive.
And the mere notion of a talking banana is absurd.
BJMcG November 7, 2011, 6:13 PM EST.

Of course, Mike. You agree to play the game if only to get the chance to make Lucy leave you alone. |D
Skygaze November 7, 2011, 6:28 PM EST.
I think I understand the fatal flaw in Sandy’s and Mike’s relationship. I’ve been wondering why she’s been too perfect, and why Mike’s been acting like a dick, since he told his feelings to Sandy. There are many things that come into account, like how Lucy doesn’t know how to show her feelings through anything else aside from rude remarks, and violent actions, but she’s actually gotten better at it. Lucy does such actions, because she doesn’t know how else to convey her thoughts.
We know where Lucy stands, how she acts, and we know why Mike is the way he is, except for the anger. His anger is understandable at the beginning, but as time goes on, it seems to be fueled, and grows stronger, even though Lucy’s backed off. There’s only a few things that we cant take into account on Mikes end. One of them is Sandy.
From what we know about Sandy, her life is completely controlled, and she can’t do anything. She has no control in anything, except her relationship, and I bet that’s even managed (How long she can talk to him). She’s very sweet, because it seems she has to be. She’s not allowed to show any flaws, any cracks that form; she’s denied to show any form of negative emotions. She can only keep it bottled inside, and continuously goes through a daily routine of acting how others want her to act. All that build up has to leak out somewhere, but yet Mike and Sandy seem to be ok (from what we have seen, at least).
In the last few chapters, Lucy’s been civil, and even nice, to Mike. She’s paying her due, in her own mind, and has to do what she has to do to gain his attention back, and even his trust. Old Mike’s a chill, go with the flow, cool guy. He would let things slide off his back, and even if he got fed up with something, he would have calmed down about it by now, and gone past it, yet new Mike he seems to keep on holding this against her.
I think Sandy’s a key element in all of this malice on Mikes end. Maybe, and this is just a thought, maybe she doesn’t want to lose Mike; the only thing she feels she has control of in her life. Sandy could easily work her words, into sounding sweet and non threatening, even though the message underneath is against Lucy, and pulling Mike closer to her. Sandy is stoking the fires of wrath in Mike’s heart, and aiming it at Lucy. Mike should feel some frustration about Sandy being so far away, yet we can’t see if he feels that or not. For all we know, he’s mindlessly bliss about his situation, and overly angry at Lucy. Mike would die for Sandy, it seems, and maybe that’s what Sandy wants; a boyfriend all to herself, that no one else can have, that she feels is her own. I know I would want someone like that in her shoes.
Even in this page, Lucy’s doing the best she can to mend a burnt bridge, and he seems to go for it with that slight blush. It has to be comforting, actually hanging out with a familiar face. He might feel isolated; putting all his free time towards Sandy and ignoring all his other friends outside of school. But who knows; we haven’t seen much of Mike’s social life.
If all this is true about Sandy, then I might actually like her more instead of feeling pity for her situation.

@the other white meat: you raise a ton of interesting points, and I have to say, after reading your post, I agree!
Pas November 7, 2011, 7:06 PM EST.
I agree completely with The Other White Meat. I’ve been analyzing the whole Sandy situation and came to the same conclusion. Mike is the only thing she has any sort of control over, and she’s used to manipulating her words considering her job as a model. I don’t believe she would have been hanging onto to him this long just because he was a childhood crush.
I always got the feeling Sandy was being insincere over the phone in To The Top. She was laying down the charm a little too liberally. “You’re much too handsome for me to let anyone else photograph you, Maishul.” Come to think of it, that sounds a little malicious. O_o
“I can’t let you do that, Maishul…” I could totally picture that now

There are those who claim that she is so much better than those free of the distance apart. That she;s the best one for his heart. This claim is all jest. How would we know who is the best? If she comes, then, we’ll see. Who’s the right girl for Mikey? Until we have that, this is so. A conflict on things we don’t know. How frivolous is such a thing? So let us read. And let her sing. The artist, sillirs! Not my fav. Was this better with that save or simply without? Nevermind, just inner doubt!
Hoheh November 7, 2011, 7:29 PM EST.
I hypothesize that the gifts Sandy sends Mike are full of a microscopic bacteria that react to his DNA, compelling him to be a dick to anyone that his beloved girlfriend chooses. She wants to get rid of Lucy first, obviously. Nobody ****s with the master plan and lives… MUAHAHAHAHA!!!

@Serge I’m not sure Lucy is necessarily trying to cheer him up as opposed to trying to break down the hard shell Mike has put between himself and Lucy.

This is the most annoying part of the series by far: The friendship rebuilding. Not only is everyone fed up with Mike’s attitude, but his reasons behind it aren’t very clear. He says it’ because of Lucy being abusive, but he seems guilty about how he’s treating her and he doesn’t fly off the handle when she starts acting that way again. I don’t really believe Mike’s true motives have been revealed. This is a bad kind of “suspensful moment.” The kind when people are looking forward to something, but they don’t really know what they want because they don’t know whats going on. Then you throw in a plot twist, but that just confuses people more. You need to give a better reason why Mike is the way he is. This may sound stupid, but you should brake up Mike and Sandy. She serves very little purpose. Their relationship is only giving Mike an excuse to be an ***. He’s annoying, and I dont look forward to seeing him anymore.

Pick Yer Poison November 7, 2011, 9:03 PM EST.
P.S. I know i’m about 4 hours late to this debate, but @the Swimmer is right i believe. Sandy represents the ideal that never was. She moved away while the whole of her relationship with Mike was still in its infancy. There were no bad times and no fights with her yet, just the sweet dopamine rush of young love. Lucy on the other hand is not only “abusive,” but she is also the nagging, annoying, sometimes friend, sometimes enemy, sometime would be girlfriend who is getting in between what Mike sees as his happiness. Sandy it the idealistic Juliet to Mike’s love-struck Romeo (yeah I know I’ve used this analogy a couple hundred times, but it is very true). Lucy also represents a danger to that happiness, because as long a Mike can feel that he is being true to his ignorant bliss he is happy. With Lucy hanging around all the time trying to “seduce” him, Mike sees Lucy as another trial (I am referring to the chapter “Hot Pursuit” in which Mike goes on about how his search for Sandy is a test of his love for her). As a result of this mentality, Mike regards Lucy with spite and disgust for trying to break his perfect world. Mike also knows that despite his love for Sandy, he still harbors feelings for Lucy and as such he is ashamed of himself for not being pure and true. This disgust is shown in the form of anger at Lucy for “causing” his “untrue” feelings for another.
Another point to make is that Mike is just as emotionally dependent on Sandy as Lucy is on Mike. Without Sandy, Mike was left empty and broken, sitting under his tree and trying to imagine that Sandy is still with him. The thing that managed to bring him back to reality was the thought of how terribly he has treated Lucy during his time with Sandy. With the reintroduction of Sandy to his life, the old wounds resurfaced and he became dependent again. Just as Lucy is never able to truly leave Mike, as we are seeing in this chapter, Mike is never truly able to forget about Sandy, without her he is little or nothing. Again he is conflicted because of his slight feelings towards Lucy, but he has decided that he needs the purity, however fleeting it may be, of a “relationship” with Sandy, instead of the good, but rocky, relationship that would be provided by his long time friend Lucy.

@the other white meat
It’s really nice to see a perspective dealing with a bit more complexity on Sandy’s character. It’s pretty clear why we don’t see this a lot; there really isn’t much given about Sandy’s personality. Apart from “To The Top,” we only see Sandy from Mike’s perspective, which is “the ideal that never was” (-Deuce Moose). Now, seeing your interpretation I’m kind of embarrassed for having had overlooked/ ignored that chapter when I interpreted Sandy’s character. I kind of pride myself for not giving an opinion without being sure of the entire story/ context. My opinion of her role in the comic stays the same, but now I see her a bit more 3 dimensionally. Thanks for that post!
The Swimmer November 7, 2011, 9:56 PM EST.
You’re all wrong! Mike has contracted an alien virus that spreads with physical contact! Since he can’t physically get Lucy away, he has to pretend to be malicious to get her out! Why doesn’t he just tell her about the deadly brain-melting disease, you may ask? Because he’s a good guy and doesn’t want to throw the whole world into panic and chaos, that’s why!

@The Swimmer and The Other White Meat, While I think that the chapter “To the Top” does gives Sandy more depth, it is one day that we are shown in her life. yes it is controlled, but we don’t see what she does when she isn’t modelling, we don’t actually hear her specific and truthful (yeah she says she’s fine to Mike, but that’s an automatic answer), we don’t see what she does on the weekends. Yeah I know that these are kind of nit picky points, but these are all parts which account for who Sandy is. As I have said many times in previous pages, yes i agree she is controlled and probably isn’t happy, but I’m not sure that the chapter in question gives us enough of an in depth look at her to judge how she deals with control in her life.
I am mostly playing devils advocate here. I agree that that Sandy is a key part of the reason why Mike acts the way he does, but I’m not entirely sure that its because she is controlling him to act this way to Lucy. As I said earlier, i’d say its more because Mike looks at Lucy as a threat to him and Sandy. As you said, we haven’t seen much of Mike’s interactions with Sandy so while you may be entirely right, Sandy may also not be trying to dig her hooks into Mike by turning him against his friends. For example, he is still great friends with Daisy, who is much more forward about her love for Mike than Lucy is and with most of the other girls, again most of whom have a far more explicit interest in Mike than Lucy does.
I do however agree that, while I still want a better look at who Sandy is on a personal or psychological level, she has become much more realized as a character since she was vaguely introduced in the early chapters.
Thanks to you both for the food for thought. Its always nice to read these comments and see other people who have great ideas about how the characters function with each, both mentally and physically.

I can’t really see Sandy being that manipulative, simply because I doubt Mike phones Sandy and is like, “Hey Sandy. I know we rarely talk so when we do I’m going to talk all about Lucy and her attempts to seduce me away from you.”
Seems like Mike would purposely choose to not talk about Lucy so he doesn’t upset Sandy or ruin his time with her. And I don’t really think Sandy even knows about Lucy being that close to like. She probably knows they’re friends (Or were friends.) but I don’t think she knows much, if anything; about their romantic aspects.
Using that same logic, should she not also have Mike targeting Daisy as well? Even Tess? If Sandy is manipulating Mike into hurting Lucy, I think it’d only make sense of her to make him hurt all of his close female friends.
Now, maybe Mike is complaining about Lucy in general to Sandy. Things like, “She’s so annoying and mean to me all the time.” and Sandy is just siding with him and saying things such as, “Oh well she’s an awful person and you shouldn’t hang around her then.” or something to that effect.
But for her to outright tell Mike to practically tell Lucy to go commit suicide because the world would be a much better place without her? Unless Sandy is a horribly malicious and evil person (In that case any other female friend of his should also be being spurned.) then I don’t think she’s manipulating him into purposely hurting Lucy. However she may just be attempting to console Mike and side with him because he is her boyfriend and unknowingly causing Mike to rage on Lucy further.

Anyways I think we can all agree we know little to nothing about Sandy and her life. Everyone seems to agree her life is very controlled and that she seems to be a perfect creature in every way, but we all very well may be wrong about even that. I’m hoping for some more incite on her and her life entirely. I have theories, but none of them can be confirmed with so little information on a character!

Speaking of Sandy, I wonder if Daisy will try and contact her at some point in the future. They were best friends after all. And I’m positive the subject of Mike and his attitude problem will come up. Maybe I’m on to something Or maybe I’m just over-analyzing here Either way, it means more drama.

Sandy scares me anyways, I don’t care if she’s manipulative or not. She has hair on her hair!
…That aside, she is in a way manipulating him… You see, she is manipulating him without knowing it. Obviously Mike changes his attitude and mindset around her and not around, so she is influencing him massively- and she can’t tell. But she, in lieu with Mike, has made some sort of mindset for him. Again, not directly…
I guess what I’m saying is, everyone’s theories have merit and truth to them. If you just add them all together, its a perfect theorie! It’s a bit of everything; Sandy IS doing nothing, while obviously doing something.
In doing nothing you’re still doing something, right?

Simply cuz Lucy confessed her feelings or whatever to him late. So he feels torn and threatened and confused, and lashes out! But this is the simple version. Just remember it isn’t because of physical abuse, Mike never cared about it that much. If youre talking about physical abuse, that is…
Someone notices my fail jokes! Woo!
Dragnite November 8, 2011, 2:34 AM EST.
Anyone remember a particular line from Mike’s sister? A line that was admitted to be poorly made? It was just a few pages ago.
Mike’s sister said that she thought that maybe Lucy could fix the stick that appears up Mike’s but when he is not on the phone with Sandy (I know that that isn’t what it said, the writers said they couldn’t find an “elegant” way to say it and this is what was meant). Point being, Mike’s anger is not specifically at Lucy. It also affects anyone who spends a decent amount of time with him. Lucy may be a key part of the agitation but she isn’t the only target. Any “manipulation” on the part of sandy would result in either simple obedience or massive frustrating hemorrhages. Clearly, if sandy is manipulating him, treating Lucy this way is causing him great turmoil. So, it is possible that he is being wracked with guilt even though he thinks he is doing the right thing. However, he will break eventually. If he is simply doing what sandy says, his “breaking” would result in immediate separation from her. Furthermore, he would begin to hate sandy over time if he was feeling so much guilt because everyone around him was suffering because of something that she asked him to do. Before long, his time on the phone with sandy would not be the best time of his day but it would instead be the time when he crammed a fake smile on his face and tried to satisfy the she-devil who he was causing all the pain for. Is that what is happening? I think not. He wouldn’t be so very happy to share with his friends (ie: when he got his phone.). Also, he would never wear a smile when texting.
But he DOES smile when she can’t see him or hear him and he PROUDLY shares his happiness with anyone who he can get to look. He is upbeat when she is only remotely involved. So, it is not an act and he doesn’t secretly hate her. So, he doesn’t think that any of this is her fault directly or indirectly. So, she has never asked him to do anything or even directly guilted him into doing anything. Meaning, she is innocent in all this. That doesn’t mean that this isn’t all her fault but she had good intent and he knows she had good intent.
It seems that many people are willing to say, at this point, “Oh, so he DOESN’T have any reason whatsoever to be mean to Lucy and he is just a HUGE, REASONLESS, ***** after all!” Let me explain something about huge ******, ok? They like being ******! They love rubbing things just the right wrong way. They ENJOY it. It is a relief to them. Look at Augusts, he loves that stuff. Thankfully, Augusts isn’t reasonless and he isn’t too bad, if you can forgive some of the stuff he has done. If you can’t forgive, well, he is the sum of every bad thing he has ever done and we are all monsters then aren’t we? Back to my point, mike isn’t enjoying this. He is sending passive aggression and a bit of normal aggression in every direction and he doesn’t seem any better to me. In fact, as me and everyone else seems to have noticed, he is getting worse. He isn’t laughing his *** off while Lucy cries. He is having outbursts in class and being mean to his family in some as-of-yet undisclosed way. He is letting Paulo get to him and he is punching abbey. You know what that is? That is an emotionally disturbed young person who feels like the entire world wants something from him that he can’t give. You know, sort of like a particular tomboy but with a different set of genitals and the expectation that he play with the right set of toys is replaced with the expectation that his love life goes exactly like everyone wants. Not even wants, expects. In Paulo’s case it isn’t even what he expects, it is whatever gets him Lucy without her ever being rejected. Remember? When she was crying, he immediately wanted to go beat on mike. That was all good and pure but do you remember when he was having his internal monolog about how lucky Mike was? That wasn’t about Lucy, that was about a personal insult that he believed he had suffered when someone chose to discard what he wanted so bad. That wasn’t even totally about Lucy, that was about Sandy too. That was partly about Mike having more interested ladies. Mike believes the entire world, save one person, is against him. So, if you are going to knock mike for his issues, you have to knock Lucy for exactly those issues.
That still doesn’t account for the special treatment that Lucy is getting. Well, he doesn’t hate her. I already mentioned the fact that he wouldn’t be so frustrated with the Lucy situation if he didn’t still like her at least as a friend. It would be simple. To him, Lucy would be that bitch who fills the air with unhappiness and pain while leaching off of others so that she can pull herself from her swamp of self pity and loathing long enough to get some fresh air. He would have nothing to do with her and his problems would be solved. He gave her the med kit that his mother packed him. Would you do that for what you believe is the embodiment of pure evil? She then collapsed into a happy, hysterical, pile of happy snot and fir and, instead of being glad about it, he became extremely displeased. You don’t do nice things for people who you are holding a grudge against. It isn’t about that. He doesn’t want her to like him. He doesn’t like the way things used to be. He doesn’t want to be her security blanket ever again and seeing her lean on him in the slightest makes him sick to his stomach. Why? Because the negative feeling that he has whenever he sees her taking comfort from him comes from the fear that he will find himself with a parasite again and rejection of the idea of betraying Sandy. Both of these make little sense without explanation.

He considers Lucy a leach. She said she loved him and he loved her to, for a time, but she never returned his love until after he left. It seems a bit overly suspicious of Mike to think that Lucy would suddenly stop loving him if he accepted her and he would be back in the situation he was in before. Forever asking just to be told no. However, he has reason to believe she is outright lying. He believes that he has been a security blanket. He believes that, without him, she is desperate to find a new blanket. He thinks that she is desperate enough to tell Mike whatever he wants to hear or use anyone who is available. Assuming he is wrong, if he were to accept Lucy, the fact that she told him she loved him would factor into that decision. In fact, believing her would be the deciding factor in returning to the old way. Why would you let some parasite who DIDN’T love you back into your life just to torture you again? So, if he were to be friends with Lucy he would be betraying Sandy even though Sandy doesn’t care about the Lucy issue. Because she doesn’t know about the Lucy issue, Mike blames himself entirely. It shouldn’t be such a problem to just be friends with her. He should give her that and he knows it. “What kind of jerk face ignores a friend?” he asks himself. “What kind of jerk face betrays a love?” he asks himself. He can’t answer. Lucy’s very existence makes him feel like a low life scum bag and any closeness with her amplifies it. However, all she and most people see is that “It looks like your very existence ****** him off”.
Why is this so hard to figure out? Partly because things are easier to understand as more information comes but also because people like the easy answer. Everyone just wants to see G.I.joe take down cobra for the six thousandth time. No one wants to have to read something and then, for every little thing they read, look internally and say “How is this little bit of fiction everyone’s fault? Am I just as bad as this fake person?” Is it that hard to believe that a story can get by without a villain? No. However, that story would be hard to understand, hard to write, and meaningful in ways that affect everyday life. Who wants to deal with that?

Well said. Welcome to the freakin long analysis club of the bcb comments page. Join the ranks of Minty, Dragnite, myself and many others as we attempt to dismantle the secrets of Mike’s current douchebaggery.
The Observer November 8, 2011, 2:54 AM EST.
I’m in these ranks? Awesome. But man I love how this comic gets us all in a mood to just… think and rant. It’s awesome. We all love this comic, don’t we?
… Also I don’t stalk this comment thing or anything. It’s just usually really late at night or early in the morning when I can access the internet so there’s not much else to do at those times.

^ Biggest webcomic character psychoanalysing fan ever.
That was quite interesting to be honest. Made me take a whole different look at the current situation. But I’m gonna be skeptic about it until I know for sure this is what actually is being told with the story.

Then again, I just made a huge generalization. Exactly the opposite of what everyone has been discussing. As Bla just stated, there’s no simple answer to this. I have to admit it gets tiring looking below each new page and seeing 90% of the comments full of hate against Mike. It’s tempting to blame Mike, but the only thing close to an antagonist so far is Alejandro.
We need more off the wall conspiracy theories here. Yashy turns out to be a secret operative planted by Alejandro, waiting to act on his signal. Hopefully the snow prevents Lucy from having to go home, where she is least safe. Yashy’s blade grows bored… she desires the thrill of drawing kitty blood. It’s not wise to make her wait…
The Observer November 8, 2011, 3:17 AM EST.
I like the idea of them hanging like old times but i just hate mike. I get y he is the way he is and understand and respect it. But as highschool as it sounds he’s doing it the wrong way. He’s being so immature about it and i expect him to **** it up to make the plot more interesting sucks because i used to think he was ok….but the poulo in me says what a *** at him
JustSomeCritic November 8, 2011, 4:45 AM EST.
Congrats Taeshi at your 600 books!
JustSomeCritic November 8, 2011, 5:12 AM EST.
I just hope a sequence of fisticuffs erupt somewhere in this 40-page chapter. Or better yet some swordplay! Final Fantasy cat looks like a guy who could handle a rapier. He’d make a perfect match against Yashy the assassin, as The Observer observed speculatively.
Speaking of dismantling Mike’s douchebaggery, I think this is the part where the _real_ Mike busts into the room and exclaims that Lucy has been talking to his _evil twin brother_ all along.

Loosen the muscles Mike and go with the flow, sometimes you just have to let yourself go and go for the ride.
Another lovely made page by Taeshi, thank you for all the hard work you do.

Momoa November 8, 2011, 11:55 AM EST.
Yay, I have been re-re-re-re-accepted into the brain prediction club! Darn it, I forgot to mention that there was a time when he was 100% convinced that Lucy didn’t love him and he did simply ignore her during that time. Unfortunately, that window was the length of one confrontation during “Pick Me Up” so, we can’t prove anything about that.
Wow. I just went all the way back to intervention to make sure I knew what I was talking about before posting this. First page, first comment, all he let her see was poker face and apologies and embraces. The subject matter is his saving her life. Just look. Page four also works as support for my theories.
I find it odd that people think that something as insignificant as a video game bet is going to fix everything. If he wins, he and Lucy get to sit in the silence until the assignment is done. He gets to feel the rush of victory and then the relief of Lucy leaving him alone. Then he gets to realize what that really means. If Lucy wins, Mike didn’t bet anything but she will feel more justified in bugging him. Of course, the fact that she didn’t bet anything means that she isn’t looking to win. Maybe she has studied all the possible strategies for the game and found a way to tie every time? All that does is stretch out her time with him.
bla November 8, 2011, 12:37 PM EST.
ok this is a good thing so far i just wonder what lucy has in mind fully? cuz something tell me this might be a smmall recreation of the flash back mike had when they were at lucys house only its reversed and lucys brother isnt there to stop them…any thoughts on this?
Siriuswolf November 8, 2011, 2:51 PM EST.
I really wonder how much of Mike’s apparently aberrant behavior can be chalked up to him being 16. In real life it’s often hard enough to establish whether behavior changes are fundamentally attributed to internal personality development or to external pressures of some sort, or a combination. I’ve seen opinions running the gamut of possibilities and all of them are more or less equally plausible.
At this point it’s almost essential to the plot that Mike remains opaque. It would help if later some elder showed up and chastised him either to his face or behind his back, just for the purpose of establishing a point of reference for the reader. Or we could end up seeing a heart-to-heart with Lucy or Sandy. I’m hoping for some internal monologues, something we haven’t seen from him in a long time.
revengineer November 8, 2011, 3:00 PM EST.
I think Lucy just missses playign with Mike…and she’s tired of being all mopey about it :-/

my goodness, there has been almost half a year(for us) with Mike hating on Lucy. It is annoying and now i’m hoping that they can be friends.
reader November 8, 2011, 5:00 PM EST.
Mike! Stop eating the controller.
I hope you continue experimenting with the comic’s style. What you’re doing is great, though I prefer the single-colour pages for some reason. Maybe you could try a ‘combination’ and try to make the colouration subtle.
Sam November 8, 2011, 5:20 PM EST.
@bla, while I agree that i don’t think a game will fix things, it may just start them talking about why they have problems, or it might exacerbate the problem, idk, but i agree the game in and of itself will probably not “fix” things.
Deuce Moose November 8, 2011, 5:58 PM EST.

First time posting. Wanted to catch up first.

I feel like an idiot for asking… but I heard that when 600 books were sold, there would be 2 chapters or something that were BCI exclusive until then. Where exactly would i find those? :l
ihonestlycantthinkofone November 8, 2011, 7:57 PM EST.
Mike’s being a Grinch in that last panel methinks. CHEER UP BOY-O!
Longinus November 8, 2011, 8:05 PM EST.
What? Lucy is making Mike play games?!?!? oh no. The Universe of Drama is falling apart!!!!! (calls the men in black)
Joshua Roberts November 8, 2011, 8:07 PM EST.
@Ihonestlycantthinkofone, they are the “confrontation” chapter and a newer one, can’t remember what its called, but it introduced the bird Error, just look at the date modified in the archives, find the two old chapters, like first 10 or 20, and see which have been updated in 2011. Hope this helps
Deuce Moose November 8, 2011, 8:14 PM EST.
Actually, that kind of happened in the summer arc, more specifically “Intervention.” This, however, was more Mike revealing his feelings (or what he didn’t feel). Lucy was the one being chastised throughout the arc by Zachie, or ‘by some elder’ (to put it into your words) in the next chapter, “Return.” I’m not sure I want to see something like that happen with Mike. I would really prefer this (revealing of character through his reaction to criticism/ simply criticism?) to involve Augustus. Nothing but a personal hope though…
The Swimmer November 8, 2011, 9:18 PM EST.
I just realized, It’s been two years for us, but it’s only been three months for the characters. Mike really hasn’t been angry at her for as long as we feel he has.
Waters November 8, 2011, 9:25 PM EST.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES REKINDLE THEM.
Peach November 8, 2011, 9:29 PM EST.
I’m glad to see them Kinda getting along. I hated that ‘I hate you and I have it worse’ crap.

This may be trivial, but it was ‘s birthday yesterday
HOW CAN WE FORGET!? November 8, 2011, 9:53 PM EST.
@Waters Uh actually I think it’s been longer than 3 months for them…I think it’s been over a year too for them. Not sure though since I’m kinda lazy to go figure it out.
DarkCrystal828 November 8, 2011, 9:54 PM EST.
I have a feeling that perhaps they will get snowed in and Lucy and Mike will be stuck together for a couple of days.
KairaWolf November 8, 2011, 10:39 PM EST.
@ Waters and @ DarkCrystal828 It’s definitely been more then a year. At the beginning weren’t they all around 13 years old? now they are about 15. Plus, they’ve at least gone from middle school to second year of highschool.
Edit.. I think I misunderstood what you meant by that Waters nevermind then. No clue, but I feel it has been longer then three months that Mike has been mad at Lucy
Sohashi November 8, 2011, 10:42 PM EST.
@SuitCase or @Taeshi, when you say you post based on EST does that mean you also adjust for daylight savings time? Just wondering for future reference.
Deuce Moose November 8, 2011, 11:02 PM EST.
Well, the comic on monday was uploaded around noon, as promised, and not 11:00 am, so I would assume that they did. Plus, I thought that they set their comics to update automatically, so wouldn’t it be based on whether or not their computers changed times? (or however these automated updates work, because I don’t know but would like to)
The Swimmer November 8, 2011, 11:14 PM EST.
Mike is still such a sourpuss (pun very intended). I think Lucy is going about this in exactly the right way.
CatTrooper November 8, 2011, 11:15 PM EST.
yeah thanks @the swimmer. i just wanted to make sure cause I too am a swimmer and season just started which makes staying up until midnight most nights something of a problem with morning practices and **** like that. anyways thanks again for clarifying.
P.S. Thanks @SuitCase
Deuce Moose November 8, 2011, 11:19 PM EST.
Lucy won’t get through to him, that much is certain. She is probably planning to use the game as a bridge toward getting Mike to actually converse with her. It’s too soon for a resolution to this though. There’s more opportunities to develop this conflict, and I am certain that Taeshi is all for the extra exposition. Some stories fall flat due to an overload of exposition, but I believe Tae has done a good job here. We wouldn’t all be analyzing the possible backstories if this wasn’t an engaging read. I like bcb because it isn’t one of the countless instant gratification comics. It’s a turn off for the person used to the gag a day format. I may miss some of the lighthearted humor from the old days, but it evolved into something much more, dare I say it, compelling.
The Observer November 8, 2011, 11:22 PM EST.
Yes, we try to adjust for daylight savings — the rule is, whatever the current time is in New York. I have to change it when DST occurs, though, so there’s a bit of confusion whenever it switches.
The page for today will, however, be a bit late. We are still catching up on awful sleep from Supanova. Once again, the next page will appear closer to noon on Wednesday, which means 12 hours from whenever you would ordinarily expect an update.
I’ve disabled the comments for now, because it just puts undue stress on Veronica to see 100 comments posted with people declaring that they’re staying up and desperately waiting for the update. Not everybody is rude and demanding, and it’s nice to see the dedication, but if a few people make a scene it can rob Veronica of the motivation to work, or cause her to rush.
