This kind of loss, most people are forced to go through eventually. It’s one of the hardest things to ever experience… it’s a tax of being alive….

Still, that he hasn’t snapped yet is remarkable… I’d be broken already… poor Abbey… Remember all the people around you that do love you, kid. Try to feel… something that resembles feeling better soon.

Thanks for all of the work, Taeshi. It’s been a fun ride, even, if not especially, through the ups and downs you throw us through.

I just realised. It is Christmas, isn’t it…

What a broken smile; I wouldn’t be surprised if he begins to laugh hysterically. although, it wouldn’t really be laughter. Poor kid can’t catch a break.
Also what Biblioholic said about that person he/she saw that lost her uncle, her reaction is not out of the ordinary. Inappropriate laughter is usually accompanied by intense anger or grief and no mental instability or illness needs to be involved.
It’s a good thing that Molly didn’t go with Abbey to visit their mother, but she’ll know about this sooner or later. It will be heartbreaking for sure.

I don’t think Abbey’s expression is crazy or wrong or unusual. It’s not really a smile, if you look at all of his face.

It’s what your face does when you get very bad news and all of your throat and face muscles tighten up just before you start to cry. You see this expression on a child’s face when they hurt themselves on the playground and the pain is just starting.

I want to give Taeshi nothing but praise for creating and sharing a realistic, engaging, often sad, sometimes funny, clever slice-of-life graphic novel.
Especially the portrayal of school life: how teachers can be clueless and demented, how cruel the mainstream kids can be to those that don’t quite fit in, and how some fortunate oddballs manage to find each other and form a group of friends.

Bittersweet Candy Bowl deserves an Ursa Award.
