It’s not your fault Abby! Sometimes there’s nothing you can do. You were just a kid. The best thing you could have done for her was stay safe and turn out to be a wonderful person, and you did. She’s smiling down on you from Heaven.

Ah, this page broke my heart.

Poor Abbey. He’s such a tragic hero. He shouldn’t beat himself up about the past. He should wipe away his tears and look on toward a brighter future. I know that’s what his mother would have wanted.

Holy **** this is heavy. I usually don’t comment but damn, I teared up a bit. I think abbey relates to a lot of us today, because we usually blame ourselves for the misfortunes of others. “I wasn’t good/strong/smart/etc. enough, so it’s all my fault that this happened.”
Thats really heavy. I feel so sorry for abbey.

Some things you just can’t fix. Some things you just can’t stop. You tried to take on the impossible Abbey, as a child no less. There isn’t much that can be said…at this point you simply stand by and offer comfort and any solace you can give and remind them, no it wasn’t you- you did try and remember that, you tried. Your voice might have been heard late, but dammit you did try.

Please, find some peace knowing that she’s not suffering, and let it be your strength. But for now, grieve. While it may hurt, it will only help make you stronger. And when it’s over, try and live the life she gave you the chance to have.

Taeshi, time for some artistic feedback!

Tears: This one is actually rather simple in my opinion. I can understand what you were going for and why, but ultimately it looks like his face is getting hollowed out. That’s just a tiny bit creepy in all aspects; in panel 3 I thought Abby was a zombie to be honest. Color in the tears- it somewhat works on Daisy but that’s only one panel so it’s hard to say otherwise.

Eyes & Shadowing: I think this is more because of the tears, but the upper portion of the face that’s being shadowed out has to be darker.

Artist Comment Section: It would be nice so we can help :D

Like a river flowing through a meadow in the spring. Just let those tears flow, Abbey. Let them flow like a river in the Spring. Just know it was never your fault. You did all you could. Her passing was fate; you can’t prevent it. And on top of that, she’s no longer suffering. She’s finally free from her pain and torment.

Yeah, I know he didn’t deal the Killing blow so to speak, but it was HIS beating her that caused her to require surgery…you know, the one she DIED from? ;_; Therefore, according to the laws where I’m at, according the the Legal system, he IS a murderer, simply because he caused the events leading to her death.

P.S. If Hell has 7 levels, each one worse than the last, then Tartarus is like the 15th floor, if you were wondering…. It truly IS the realm of eternal suffering…

And there it goes. It’s finally happening. The brave little warrior fighting for everyone finally opens up his armor, and lets the hurt that’s inside him spill out.

It’s okay, brave warrior. We all appreciate your valiant struggle, but no man should ever be forced to fight his wars alone. You’ve done very well for yourself and everyone around you, too.

Let the hurt go. Let those close to you help patch you up, so you can keep doing the right thing. And don’t doubt yourself, little champion.

I don’t normally comment on these (especially since this is my first comment) but I feel like I gotta say something.

Abbey makes me wanna start bawling. I didn’t have the same sort of childhood he had, but I could honestly see myself in his shoes. To feel like it’s all your fault, to think if only you did things differently, and then finally breaking down and believing you failed those who are dear to you… I can only speak for myself when I say I’ve been there and I do my hardest to not go back.

I hope that one day, Abbey will realize that he was not to blame for all of this. Neither his mother nor Molly will ever blame him. Abbey acted appropriately when he had to. He even had the courage to confront his father and send him away to prison before he could run away.

I hope he realizes how much his mother really loved him and Molly. After all, she placed them in a good home that came with a supportive network of caring people.

It’s a good thing Daisy came along with, this will deepen Abbey’s bond with her, and to the rest to the gang in the future (hopefully, since he’s around them nowadays……… Maybe not Paulo yet….). I wonder if they know Abbey’s past? Probably not. Well, at least, hopefully, it’ll be easier for him to open up to the others now because of his deepening bond with Daisy. Whenever or if he chooses to, of course. Hopefully he’ll be able to cope with his past better in the future because of his bond with Daisy! Well, maybe not the exact relationship, but what it represents for Abbey. I could be wrong, but I think its allowing him to grow emotionally healthier. Maybe if he never made friends with Daisy he’d still have Janet to comfort him, but it just wouldn’t really be the same. Well, at least that’s what I think.

OMG, 4 pages left, I’m so anxious to see how this chapter ends! Now all that’s left it Molly :( . It’ll suck, but something needs to be done. Will they be telling her right away or wait? Maybe right away, it’ll be better for her. Good Luck Abbey, please don’t think it’s your fault! You’re a wonderful boy with good and bad points like everyone else, who’s still growing up, and you’ve been doing a good job so far! So please don’t blame yourself :(

That was perfect. I mean ya its terrible and sad that it happened that way but honestly if you had given him a happy reunion with his mom after all that build up I would have felt cheated and lied too.

unfortunately I did lose my bet with a friend of mine. I had my money on abbeys mom being a vegetable or ending up with some form of mental damage from the trauma and not being able to remember or interact with abbey.

now I can only hope this gives abbey something new to grow off of and maybe give daisy a deeper sense of the two of them.

This chapter has been so beautiful! It hurts to see any of the characters like this. What they are going through seems so real and less child-like, like in the earlier chapters. Not like that was a bad thing, just that this actually gives a nice outlook on things (kind of makes me regret picking i miss the light-hearted comics on the survey). I hope Abbey forgives himself for feeling this way, it was never his fault. All these things he has gone through is actually happening today and makes one feel happy they are in a loving home!

At least you have your answers now. Time to let it go. Time to move on. The longer you hold it in your chest, the more it will chew you up. Life’s too short to be hung up on what was and what could’ve been. I can safely say this after years of going to war with my own demons. The more you sink into yourself and into the past, the more disconnected you become and vengeance, as well as hope become the only desperate threads you have to hold on dangled above from the void below. The only person with enough power to damn or save you is yourself. Others are just there to help/hinder you, but ultimately you have to make the choice.

“Stupid teen problems.” Hey, you know what, **** you, you insensitive ****. @Michael S, @LV5Whatever, grow up. There is always going to be someone, somewhere in the world who has it worse than you. Big ****ing deal. You can’t use that to trivialize someone else’s feelings. When my friends come to me, and mention stuff going on in their lives, I don’t go “WELL YOU KNOW BEING A TRANSWOMAN IS HARDER, LOOK AT ALL THE DISCRIMINATION I HAVE TO FACE AT THE HANDS OF STUPID ****ING CONSERVATIVES, LOOK AT MY EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS, BOO HOO” because that constitutes a bad person and overall a ****** friend.

So he lost his mother, boo ****ing hoo, cry me a river. He has every right to feel down but his friends also have their own as a result of their so-called ‘petty’ high school problems. These aren’t negated just because he suffered a greater emotional blow. That does nothing but constitute a giant circle-jerk where people try to one-up each other with their emotional trauma. Need I remind you that in every person’s life, their problems are the most important. They don’t need ******** muscling their way in and berating them for having their problems added on to anything else they’re experiencing.

“WELL YOU CAN’T BE SAD OR WORRY SOMEONE ELSE HAS IT WORSE HOW INSENSITIVE” **** off, that is the worst ****ing logic I’ve ever heard. “SORRY SUSAN YOU CAN’T BE SAD ABOUT BEING IN THE WRONG BODY SOME KID IN AFRICA IS STARVING” Yeah, sure.

2. Why did Janet act like they could stay the night in a grave yard

3. Why was Janet so cheery on the way to seeing her adopted childs dead mum?

I have a feeling that it will all be explained though, perhaps it is his dads grave? -confused-

Looking at this made me mute.
I have to admit; I hated Abbey before this because of his cold attitude, but seeing as this chapter came about, that hatred began to lessen itself. Instead, I felt sympathy. Only then did I see there was a different person to Abbey - showing concern towards his mother, likely an action any caring child would do. As to now, I can only offer my sincerest condolences.

Abbey did his best to help his mother on his part. He shouldn’t blame himself for her passing, but that is what we all tend to do.

We know that Abbey’s mom wouldn’t want him to suffer and see her in the hospital bed sleeping, trying to recover from his father’s bashing that he gave her, it would be to hard to her only son who fought so hard to save her and who confronted Dad.

Thankfully Abbey was never hurt when he confronted his dad (thanks to the police arriving on time) and his mom is thankful because she later on knew that the kids are going to a normal family, they can share the good times together even if she isn’t in the picture. Any mom who loved her children as much as she did would be thankful for that.

It’s better now that Abbey is older and he is strong enough to heal and move on, he must understand that his mom wants him to do this and live a good life. Live a good life Abbey, it’s what your mom wanted to give, but couldn’t.
(the hard part is going to be breaking this down to Molly ._. <— see that face? The result.)

I kind of think finding out his mother had passed was for the best, of any situation I could have imagined, seeing as it would villainize Charlotte if she were still alive and had just abandoned her kids. Also, I think Abbey will be better able to process her death rather than abandonment. It is very heartbreaking, though. And seeing as how Abbey blames himself for the whole thing it really gives some insight into how he acts now that he is older. No child should have to see the horrors that he had, and he managed to be very mature about the way he handled everything when he was so young. I sincerely hope Abbey can recover and continue to work through his problems, and lead a happy, successful life. I’m rooting for you, Abbey!!

TTnTT Oh poor Abbey! At least now he knows where his Mom is and her final wishes for him and Molly. I hope that he takes this to heart and continues to try to be a good person. I guess I’m concerned with his ‘point of view’ on this. I hope he doesn’t connect being a good person (or trying to be) with these horribly tragic results, because that might make Abbey change the wonderful person he is now.

All I have to say is that idiotic emotions such as grief is greatly needed in this strip. Abbey should had learned that this will occur when he first started to think about his mother. And Janet should had told him that “Abbey I’m so sorry but your mother died during the surgery” Its stupid to be like “I’m not going to tell him at all because I respect his feelings”
Come on Vera we all know that Shady could had done this comic better but you should at least gave it more thought towards it.

He’ll be ok.

oh and @PsyGuy I’m pretty sure “getting wasted” isn’t a good solution to any problem and is more of a means to avoid addressing one. You are allowed to have your own opinion and even if you don’t agree suggesting something like that is never appropriate.

His fault for telling his mother that stupid father was cheating with another woman? He rather kept quiet and keep living in a lie while his mother keeps suffering?
Well is kinda his mother’s fault for not telling the authorities while she could. For believing like everything was gonna be okay like a miracle. She may be a good mother but lacked willpower. She preferred to be a scared kitty instal make justice.

Yeah Abraham, your fault my ***. Quit sulking for stuff you couldn’t done, you aren’t a superhero. Get over and move on :P

I’ve got a little experience with people like Abbey’s father.

It’s not even partially Abbey’s fault, even though his father would love someone to tack the blame on, someone to emotionally abuse. These people don’t change, and they can’t be reasoned with. It’s not a question of “if” they will be violent, it’s a question of when, how much, and how severe. If he’s capable of murder for reason, he’s capable of it for another. It doesn’t even have to be another reason. Eventually she was going to find out, or wisen up and try to take her kids out of that situation.

I’d say it’s partially Abbey’s mother’s fault, for staying in the situation and making her kids go through that, but that wouldn’t justify everything that’s really going on here. In most of these kinds of cases, the woman is psychologically tethered to their abuser, a combination of love and fear that keeps most women from leaving right when they should .

No, there’s only one guilty party here, and that’s Abbey’s father. He’s a despicable excuse for a man that bullies the people he’s supposed to love. The last thing he said to Abbey was emotional abuse, he said that just to get the blame off himself, and to make Abby feel like ****. This is a guy who would have eventually killed his wife regardless of what anyone said or did.

“These people don’t change, and they can’t be reasoned with.”
Been there, bro. Not to drag the comment section down, but being in a family where abuse was a thing I grew up in, I understand. I even understand why Abbey and his sister tend to “lose it” when they see abusive acts. Once my boyfriend’s mother was being uncharacteristically nasty to him, and I had to leave because I couldn’t stop shaking (fear, anger, flashbacks).

But anyway, even if Abbey ever confronts his father, I doubt he’ll find comfort in it. I sure as hell didn’t. It’s true. Abusive people truly DON’T feel responsible or reasonable about these things. If Abbey’s father finds out he killed her, in his mind all he’ll think is “that’s too bad. she shouldn’t have gotten in my way.” He may be sorry she’s dead, but he won’t be sorry he did it. That’s how these type of people work.

And if someone was in an abbusive family issue, then things like this are likely to happen. And a mom who cares enough would likely sacrifice the knowledge of her death from her kids in attempt to make them happy. This is really one of my favoirte chapters ;u; *gives Abbey all the hugs*

@confused I’m just going to wager a guess here, but since Abby’s dad hit her with a lamp - likely in the head, since she was knocked out cold - it’s possible he caused some kind of hemorrhage or hematoma in the brain, and the surgery was an attempt to fix that.

also,
@taeshi,
if that is charlotte’s grave, you just officially made janet the bi-atch of the century. I get this is a dramatic chapter and is gonna be extra emo, but don’t forget how the character actions can reflect on them in chapters like this. Obvious case in point, what everyone is saying about janet’s attitude and actions towards this situation. Sorry, but it’s like past janet interaction plot points we’re almost completely forgotten to add drama in these post flash back scenes. Of course it could be you’re screwing with everyone’s head and that’s not her grave and she shows up; so we see that it’s abbey sr or someone else’s grave then in that case it’s all good.

My own mother would call me a liar to my face when I mentioned my stepfather’s abuse, and when I got upset about him insulting me would say “oh, stop it. Is it me, or is Janet pretty horrible for doing this? Why would you think putting on a happy persona, inviting Abbey to come see his mother, and even bringing his girlfriend with him, would be a good leadup to him finding out about her death? Not even her death, but actually BEING LED TO HER GRAVE?

That totally disillusioned me. I’m really not feeling this chapter at all. I dunno, it seems a bit…off.

My guess: After Abraham was put in jail, he comitted suicide, that’s why Abbey’s saying he couldn’t stop him and how it was his fault. Janet might have found he was dead while looking for Charlotte and thought Abbey should know. Charlotte’s still alive. She might have lost her memory or something, but is still alive.
Oh, and if you’re going to say Abbey wouldn’t cry for his father, think again. He might be **** but he is still his father, and Abbey seems to blame himself more than what he blames Abraham.

For once, I might actually post a comment that isn’t completely ridiculous and full of horrifying tales of how the characters will experience all kinds of twisted sexual encounters with each other (necrophilia, incestuous gang rape, etc.)

I feel like Abbey suddenly stopped being Abbey on this page. As soon as I saw that he had dialogue, my first thought was “this feels wrong.” From my understanding of who he is, I feel like he would either say very little, or nothing at all at this point. I also expected that he would, in all likelihood, make some attempt to push the others away in an attempt to be given some space.

What happened on this page just felt awkward. It felt like Abbey suddenly went from being a real character, to trying to act like his character, and only getting the “You’re upset that your mother is dead” part right.

I get the tears, I get that he feels like it’s his fault, I get that the frontal lobes of his brain are probably going apeshit at this point.

But I don’t get why he went from being Abbey, to being this whining little bitch. He’s the kind of person that tries to solve problems himself, not someone who would voice those thoughts and thereby invite the pity of others. On top of that, he’s a guy, and there’s this thing in male psychology where the vast majority of us, under times of high stress, will recede into a little place some people call “The Nothing Box” for some period of time. It’s a coping mechanism, it’s just what we do. We don’t say that **** out loud. At least as long as the guy in question isn’t a whiny bitch, anyways, and I can’t recall any other situations where Abbey has been under that umbrella.

Realistically, if Abbey did say any of those things, it wouldn’t be until after he regained some kind of composure. Even then, I don’t feel like it would have been voiced the way it was on this page - it would have been more of an observational statement, rather than a despairing complaint.

Also, the last three speech bubbles should be replaced by the following, said by Daisy:

“Shhh, Abbey, it’s alright - I’m here for you.”

“…And… Abbey, I love you.”

“SURPRISE BUTTSECKS.”

…It had to be done.

—-EDIT—-

But in all seriousness, this page probably would have been much more effective without any dialogue whatsoever.

It’s closure, like a flood. It washes completely over, immerses, and leaves behind terrible damage. No damage, however, is irreparable. I think the house will be rebuilt, but with the foundations of Molly, Janet, and Daisy, not of an abusive father and the broken shell of a woman with a beautiful heart. When he gets over it, he’ll have those new foundations, and the knowledge of a mother freed from the pain of the world. I think he’ll be different, but to change isn’t necessarily a bad thing, nor does it make you truly a different person. Painful closure, but closure, nevertheless. This is fast becoming one of my favorite chapters.

Personally i think you can end this chapter here and let us think what we want to but that might not work if this matters at some other point in the story…

From what I see now, Lucy need not fear that Daisy will use Abbey. SHe may have some feelings for Assface, but no one ever feels this strongly for those they use.

Dick move Abbey’s foster mum (who’s name currently escapes me [Janice?])! C’mon, at least tell him you’re taking him to a graveyard! Oh well, more emotionally crippling trauma for Abbey there, nevermind, I’m sure he’ll get over it many years from now.
Nice colours on the last panel, though I think the tears look a bit odd, more like skin deformities than a stream. Still, Kudos!

This is the worst way to tell abbey (and whoever) that his mother is dead. Everyday he had tried to keep going with his life like a normal teenager, defending what he believes is good, being a good student and friend; almost like anything of this had happened…its so sad. He has to be strong for his sister and his own sake, hoping for one day to finally see his mother’s face again….but now….this is too much for him to take it, plus how is he supposed to tell molly that mommy is dead? that all the christmas gifts were in vain? that there was no one to greet and hug because she was gone? If his own soul is broken, what is left for his sister? At least abby has dear and sweet daisy and goes to the doctor for help, but molly….is just a kid…pour girl…
Even thought, this chapter has a sad ending (for the moment) I like it, because it shows the reality of many kids and teens that you are normally not aware. Taeshy, please ignore my tears and sobs, keep the good work as always.

Janet is the worst parent ever. Either that or the story is told from the point of view of an unreliable narrator.

These last few pages seems to suggest incredibly that Abbey was in no way told that his mother was dead, like he was just let out of a car, in the middle of a graveyard, like “Surprise! Your mother’s dead!”.

That.. that is pretty terrible.

He seemed to be so sure they were going to some sort of home or hospital or… something.

Where would they be staying the night at, if they had drove out during the day and arrived at night? In the cemetery? The car? She knew they were going to a grave.

“We’re going to see your mother! Get in the car! We’ll stay the night!”

“Yay!”, then they round the corner in the car to a tombstone.

“Just kidding, she’s a corpse!”

I realize that in response to the comment I am about to make, people will call me a cold-hearted, self-centered douche, but I need to get the point across: It is Abbey’s fault ORIGINALLY… well, not originally, but it could have been prevented. When his mother talked about the “gum in the hair” or whatever, Abbey mentioned the woman with whom his father was adulterating with. It could’ve been prevented further by the father not adulterating, or the mother not marrying him; but if that were the case, Abbey would never have been born… so yeah…
