I can imagine this won’t last for long. I mean, Lucy isn’t exactly a saint as it were. Secondly, way to take the blame Lucy. Especially because it’s only about half her fault.
Also, Taeshi, with the small scene with the phone that you included a link to, I just kind of assumed that she would do something much less noble
I would say she is at about Step Four

Wow, this is really grasping ahold of me! I sure hope everything works out, and I’m wondering what happens when Mike sees Lucy again… I have no idea how it could turn out, with their relationship and all that. I’m loving the art, but I guess nowadays that’s pretty typical of us, isn’t it? Keep it up Taeshi, can’t wait for Wednesday!!!

Oh Lucy… >:
How hard must it have been for you to go and forsake your contact with the one you really loved. >:
A selfless act to give up your (once) security against the cruelships of the world.

There Mike. I hope you feel like the biggest ********* the world has ever known now.
You tore Lucy’s heart out and she agreed with you. I hope you feel HORRIBLE about it.

Ya know, I think the title of this chapter sums up Lucy right now.
Lush July 9, 2012, 12:03 AM EST.
Poor Lucy. I don’t know whether to cheer because it’s obvious she’s grown a bit more mature or cry because she is being extremely hard on herself. This page just shows how far she’s willing to go to make sure the people she loves are truly happy.

@Nikita: You must enjoy stroking your own ego so you’re at the top of the comments, aye?
OH LUCY. I KNEW IT. I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT, I. KNEW. IT!!
Here! Here! PROOF! Proof that Lucy is trying to grow up and make amends even if she can’t be there to witness it first-hand. Holy hell in a hand basket. Lucy you silly thing! Mike! Please, for the love of all that is well, please take that in the best way possible. Please, please. I don’t expect a tear-jerking moment where he realizes all he has done. Please. He’s pretty wrapped up in his own world with Sandy and he’s a teenager.
But if it could just be something, something anything that would show that he understands that she WAS trying to help, to make things right. I guarantee he hasn’t thought about her once up until this point. I want it to make him think a little. If nothing else, I want him to think about it.
Ugh, god! Weds will not come quickly enough for my tastes. <3
Yaschiri July 9, 2012, 12:04 AM EST.
I was wondering what she would say, and this is perfect! Now the emotional healing can begin… But Lucy’s letter also sounds like a suicide note. I truly hope that Lucy does not try to kill herself and becomes stronger instead! Also I hope that mike apologizes to her and they can at least be friends again.
Zombiekuh July 9, 2012, 12:05 AM EST.

I agree. The title of this chapter pretty much describes Lucy very well.
And now, the comments from our Lucy-haters! -confetti, sparkling lights, all that cool stuff and whutnot-
Mew July 9, 2012, 12:06 AM EST.
Wait a second, if Lucy stops bugging Mike, his life wont get better, it will stay where it is. With the frequencies they are forced to work on a project together, I would say that it is impossible to say that they are done with each other.
Also, they still have to show up to the play together. Mike isn’t bad, and neither is Lucy. They just need a tension breaker, e.g. the turtle shows up and trips someone.
MagicMan July 9, 2012, 12:06 AM EST.
I can’t wait to see what Mike’s reaction will be. Lucy, you have grown up so much ;u;
I just hope Mike realizes what he’s done to her..

Well of course, who wouldn’t. Then again, ‘Fasts don’t lie.’
Also, I think it’s ‘stoking’ your own ego. Mostly because any sentence with ‘stroking’ in it automatically becomes a double entendre.

Frodomann1 July 9, 2012, 12:10 AM EST.
You’ve matured, but we love your original personality.
You’re not sweet and sappy, you’re not Ms. Perfect, you’re sassy and spicy like a pepper, but can be sweet like a cherry.
Even though you were screamed at because of the crude actions you’ve bestowed on Michael non-stop for many years, we still feel sympathy.
Things will be better, my dear.
We’re glad you aren’t giving up to Michael at his feet. We see your recovery now. You’ve got your friends. They won’t leave you because Michael is leaving the table. You’re too cool to be left behind.
We’re all glad you decided not to trash Michael’s life, as he has made you feel worthless at that moment. You did the right thing, and made sure Sandy knew what’s up, and to make sure she made him feel happy go round.
You’re a very pretty and sensitive girl, you won’t give up, we all know that.
We, the Bittersweet Candy Bowl fans, love you a lot, and we respect you for doing the right thing. We can already predict that your life from now on will probably be heartwarming and enjoyable. Don’t let Michael flip out on you for making sure Sandy could make him feel better.

Jinx. July 9, 2012, 12:10 AM EST.
It must be taking a lot of effort for Lucy to be able to write such a text just a few moments after Michael told her all those bad thigs back in “December”.
Also i guess the spartan page is ok: Michael and Sandy are just reading her message, and none of them was there when she sent it so it looks like they can just imagine sparks of her while looking at the phone.
Cavara July 9, 2012, 12:10 AM EST.
This is true altruism right here. She sees now the pain she’s caused Mike over the years and now understands where she needs to be in his life. I may be a MikeXLucy fan, but I am happy to see them grow apart in this way. Mike can be happy and Lucy can finally move on. It’s better for both of them.
The fact that she basically handed his well being over to Sandy shows how much she cares about him. She wants him to be happy even if it’s from afar.

ultimateZ July 9, 2012, 12:18 AM EST.
Lucy is far too hard on herself. She’s why he didn’t die on 12. Remove her and what would have happened? Considering her actions since the Acapulco arc, she didn’t recently change how she treated him. He’s just too stubborn to see this fact. The clues were there without her telling him. He’s actively acting as if he would have let her, anyway. Funny.
Hoheh! July 9, 2012, 12:19 AM EST.

She did not tell on him, because she understood the consequences that would of happened: Sandy gets mad at Mike, Mike knew it was Lucy, Mike screams at Lucy, Lucy forever scarred and broken.
She would of been hurt to the point she could possibly not recover from the blow.
the cookies. July 9, 2012, 12:19 AM EST.
I think this just made Mike even more ticked off at Lucy, as he probably sees this as Lucy intruding in his relationship with Sandy, rather than anything else, apologies/good intentions aside :C
;_; I hate to say this, but this won’t change Mike’s opinion of her by a lot (but that’s what I think). Specially if this happened before Tess’s party, because the look on his face didn’t seem to indicate that when Tess called for her . If anything, Mike will be glad if Lucy stays away, and WILL hold her to it. But will this make him seek her out again/apologize/renew their friendship/believe she’s changed? No. But, even of it did, it wouldn’t change Mike’s stance on the issue much .

Katiecoo July 9, 2012, 12:23 AM EST.
She figured Sandy would remember who “Lucy” is. That’s why she used her name.
It’s an apology to Sandy because she felt it was called for and knew Mike would never give her the chance to speak to Sandy in person.
all of you who say it’s wrong to demonize Mike are doing the very same thing to Lucy.
Stop trying to twist it. It’s a simple appology with good intentions.
You know Mike would never have let her speak to Sandy in person. If she wanted to appologize, how else could she have gone about it?

caninewolfreaper July 9, 2012, 12:32 AM EST.
Ah, so she did vouch for him. Poor girl… Poor Mike as well…. I mean: All she wanted was to love him, and all he wanted was to be with Sandy. Sure there was that one chapter were he HAD attempted to kiss Lucy, but she had also turned him down. If anything, they are both to blame for the huge mess that has built up until this point…
Boo July 9, 2012, 12:33 AM EST.
The true test will be seeing how Mike reacts to this. He doesn’t seem entirely rational to me lately.
Cyph July 9, 2012, 12:34 AM EST.
Wow. This page has a lot of personal significance for me.
Lucy is taking a big step here. She’s going beyond the security, as well as the confinement of her unfulfilled feelings.
It’s like taking in a deep breath of fresh air and waking up from a nightmare that just gnaws and gnaws on your heartstrings until it makes you sick in the gut; either making you wretchedly sad or extremely irritated to the point where you just want to lash out at the source of your sorrows (often times, this is a hatred direct at one’s self, since we are often the source of those sorrows. Choosing to control or let them go is another matter).
She’s setting aside her greatest dream and her strongest love, and doing it with better grace than one would expect her to. I don’t know why, but I feel fragments of herself are starting to become more cohesive with this gesture of hers.
Maybe she’ll stop looking towards others so often and start looking to herself for answers, as well as comfort. It’ll be tough from this point and she’ll still be gloomy for a stretch, but at least she won’t be standing on the brink peering over the chasm below.
She’ll be sitting a safe distance from it and, in time, hopefully she’ll make the move away from it back into the world she has maneuvered around the edges of so far.
DarkSlot July 9, 2012, 12:35 AM EST.

That’s pretty decent coming from Lucy.
She has been such a drama queen lately.
Lycan2 July 9, 2012, 12:40 AM EST.
I still wish the worst for Mike, at least until he stops making Lucy into the bad person he now thinks she is…since she was his friend and he did like her (you don’t start liking someone if you truly hate them). He had the audacity to say that he was only nice to her because everyone else was, when he was the one who had the crush on her……….He even said she was a good person, then he started over thinking crap because he was in love with Sandy and made everything Sandy said true and worse than it was. He knew Lucy had issues and a temper. Him understanding that was the reason they could be friends in the first place….. I just hate characters like that….it’s stupid and horrible to treat someone like Mike did to Lucy. If anyone ever said something like that to me (refer back to the unneeded outburst of Mikes in the December chapter towards Lucy) I wouldn’t have just sat there and taken it, even if my true love was saying that to me! Just makes my blood boil to think how naive and spoiled Mike is….
Anyways… I know he’s just going to get mad about it one way or another and Sandy’s going to tell him it’s okay, OR by some small slim chance, he might feel bad for being so mean and feel slightly abashed by it….OR he might even be happy Lucy said that and feel awkward with Sandy now because of his earlier ridiculousness.
Truthfully I hope the cruel reality is that while they were in a long distance relationship, Sandy ended up getting feelings for someone else who is more on her level and ends up being unable to truly be with Mike, leaving him a lesson he needed to learn, just to keep up with the lesson he pounded into Lucy’s head.
Tickled July 9, 2012, 12:42 AM EST.
This reads like a cry for help to me. I’ve no doubt Lucy will stick to her word and leave Mike alone, but Mike - if he’s got any decency - should not just shove Lucy to the corner after reading that. That isn’t the sort of message someone leaves when they’re peaceably and mutually ending a friendship. This is like floating on a board in the midst of an ocean, and seeing no rescue or shore in sight, simply giving up and letting your body slide into the cold water. Prepared to freeze to death just to stop the endless struggle to keep on your small, pitiful and remorseless buoy.
Lumi July 9, 2012, 12:47 AM EST.
Well, that’s certainly one way to be a martyr…
I’ve found that characters which take the blame on themselves tend to overdo it. It’s not a healthy thing, and it can get rather repetitive after a while of “It’s my fault, blame me”. So, I can hope to myself that Lucy doesn’t keep this kind of personality, both fictitiously for her because it’s really not healthy when all you do is sacrifice yourself, and realistically for me as a reader, because, no real offense meant to anyone out there using those kinds of characters, they tend to get boring later on in the story, especially after it’s them about to die (either emotionally or literally) for the seventh time in a row.
Neospector July 9, 2012, 12:48 AM EST.
This actually unfolded much better than I thought it would…..
TraceLegacySSOF July 9, 2012, 12:48 AM EST.
Before anyone blows up on me, let me make it very clear. I am not a “mike X Sandy ” fan. However I feel that Mike is still the victim in this scenario.
Let me the devil’s advocate and state that all of this is technically her fault and brought this upon herself.
She is the one who, for the entirety of the series, manipulated and abused Mike into a faulty relationship. Her jealousy of Sandy
This is irks me about this is that people are DEFENDING the abusive partner. They attack Mike all because he yelled at her and told her off. I mean, what is wrong with you people?
He felt that he would be happier with Sandy and got sick and tired of Lucy’s manipulation, and as a result he reacted in hostlity from the years of frustration that he suffered from Lucy’s bullying. More so, Lucy is a TERRIBLE person. I have read the entire comic series and realized that she has absolutely Zero redeeming factors, mostly because she either A. bully’s Mike without anyone noticing, or B. manipulates her friends into giving her sympathy.
The worse part is that after the last chapter involving Paulo, where she grinned after he told her that her friends still love her, I feel that she is going to try to manipulate Mike’s attempt at an apology and go right back into an abusive relationship.
It does not matter if Mike said things to hurt her feelings, as she has spent the entire comic abusing Mike and will continue to abuse him until his friends realize that she is not mentally well, regardless of Mike’s obsession with wanting to see Sandy or his bipolar disorder.
Let me ask you this. If you were in the same position as Mike during the homework assignment, would you have not reacted the same way? If any of you were to tell me hat he should have told her more kindly, be advised that she would have still went into a meltdown. The only difference would be that SHE would be causing psychological damage to HIM. By that, I mean that she will yell at him, telling him that he is a piece of **** for wanting to spend time with Sandy, and maby even attack him physically like she has been doing throughout the series.
Please do not flame me for posting my opinion on the matter, I am just addressing the fact that there is scientific evidence that males do get abused by women in relationships. The reason why you hear so little about males being abused is because society as a whole treats men with little respect for complain, thinking “if she hits him, he deserved it” and refusing to take the real victim seriously. And his happens a lot.
And yes, Lucy is the abusive one, not Mike.
Eddboy July 9, 2012, 12:49 AM EST.
PRE-SANDY. Lucy was a healthy, ( shy and different, sure ), but healthy, happy kid who OPENLY showed her pure adoration for Mike.
Later on she risked her LIFE for him multiple times despite the fact that she did not have to.
She was given the chance to abuse Paulo’s obvious care for her, but she did NOT.
You’ve made up your mind about her and that’s all you seem to be capable of seeing now.
headdesk July 9, 2012, 12:54 AM EST.
This… this brought me to tears. I’ve been following this for a while, and I read everything all in a day when I found it and eagerly await the next update day each time a new page is out, and Lucy is hands down my favorite. I love your art style, and the fact you take your time out to do this for everyone who reads BCB, so thank you for that. ^^ Lucy has grown so much over the chapters and pages and she really is being to hard on herself… I cannot wait to see whats next, and thank you again for doing this for us c:
Scylla July 9, 2012, 12:55 AM EST.
I am going to make the prediction that Mike is going to go to Lucy and apologize, then try to patch up the friendship, while she’s going to be either angry or against his idea.
End July 9, 2012, 1:00 AM EST.
If any one wants a reference to my argument against Lucy’s nature, here is a link to a TVTropes page discussing the situation.
Most of them agree with the idea that Lucy is at fault.
Eddboy July 9, 2012, 1:01 AM EST.
… I feel sad now, I’m pro Lucy x Mike
Also it feels all the worse with Lucy herself reinforcing it!
Anon-Anon July 9, 2012, 1:05 AM EST.
Haha, wow, are you one of those people who don’t classify neglect/emotional battering as a legitimate form of abuse? Lucy might of been physically abusive at times, and it was not right of her to do so, but that doesn’t warrant Mike’s treatment of her, especially when despite this and her closed-off nature she clearly cared very, very much about Mike. Her defensiveness and willingness to go above and beyond for him overshadowed her negative traits by a mile. I don’t think Mike should of quietly put up with her abuse, but the way he handled it was NOT graceful. Calling someone who you know holds you that precious and is incredibly unstable a parasite whom no one likes? Do you even understand how psychologically damaging that is when it comes from someone you love? Also, where have you gotten manipulation from? If anything, Lucy was the least manipulative out of all of her friends. Don’t confuse shutting people out for manipulation.
Bottom line is, neither party is wholly innocent, and that is the only true answer here. Lucy did some bad things, but Mike arguably damaged her much worse in ways that are either plain unfixable or will take ages to heal from. What they need to do is sit down and talk to each other rationally without letting their stubbornness get in the way of the other’s point of view.
Lumi July 9, 2012, 1:05 AM EST.
And please dont take this as flamming because i dont really care that much.
Would I have reacted the same way to a lifelong friend directly after recieving a text from my girlfriend. Considering lucy had actually seemed to be making an effort at trying to be a friend for once, how unforgivable! No i would not have reacted the way mike did if i were in the same position.
Cyph July 9, 2012, 1:06 AM EST.
that’s so sad I hope Mike at least understands her perspective from her text.
Justmyopinion July 9, 2012, 1:08 AM EST.
try to think of this from a girl’s perspective. a girl who’s head over heals, idiotically in love with this guy. more than that, he’s her best friend.
Let me give you one example. Try really hard to think emotionally.
the reason she rejected his kiss was because she was scared he was seeing Sandy.
Shortly after she moved, he started hanging out with Lucy again…. but he didn’t realize at that point that he had hurt her so badly.
She looked quite a bit like Sandy, according to the comic, and he often pretended that she /was/ Sandy.
It was made clear that Lucy and Mike were both aware of this.
Now fast forward a bit.
Mike /may/ have started seeing Lucy for Lucy at this point…..
He may have developed feelings for her, and he may really be seeing her instead of Sandy.
But how is Lucy supposed to know this?
What she knows is that Mike abandoned her when they were children, and used her as a substitute when the real thing he’d left her for was gone.
( I know he may or may not have realized what he was doing at the time. but Lucy didn’t realize what her fears were doing to him, either. )
That’s bad enough—- but on top of that, she could come ack at any time, and he’d leave the substitute for the real thing in a heartbeat.
She actually had deep feelings for him.
….. are you getting the math here yet or should I spell it out?
Do you have any idea how scary it is to care about someone that much and realize that you have no control over it? and this person could just up and walk out of your life, and you’d never see them again. Your best friend, the person you do everything with, spend all your nights talking to about nothing, spend all your bored as hell moments with, laze around with, go through everything with. Do you have any idea what a huge hole that would leave if they left? Do you have any idea how much damage that does?
and if you wanna talk about “who started it” ( which honestly silly, because an eye for an eye solves nothing. )
Lucy was this tiny strange ball of fur that didn’t fit in with anyone. then she found Mike.
Mike got her.
They got along great.
and they became what she thought was bestfriends.
She OPENLY expressed her PURE ADORATION for him on a REGULAR BASIS.
she showed every ounce of feeling that she had for him.
Then Mike abandoned her. He didn’t mean to, it just happened. Maybe he didn’t realize how deep her deep feelings really went.
But whether he meant to or not, he hurt her.
THAT was when she became withdrawn.
THAT is what “started it”.
headdesk July 9, 2012, 1:10 AM EST.
You know people. This doesn’t mean “because I’m going to off myself,” it means, “I’m going give him the space he desires and needs because I’ve finally taken the damn hint.”
She finally understands that she’s burnt that bridge, and what little that was left, Mike torched it. She’s letting Sandy know, that she isn’t going to bother Mike any longer. This is her way of letting Mike go, no matter how much it hurts, and to reassure Sandy, that he will no longer suffer by her hands, intently or not.
You got to remember, that physical and verbal abuse also contributes to mental abuse. She’s ****ed him up pretty badly in all the areas. It took Sandy to make him realize that. Unfortunately, that pent up anger boiled into an ugly head and destroyed any chance of resolving that friendship, only completely snapping it in half.
This hardly a suicide note. If she really wanted to off herself, she would had done it that night while she was in a frenzy. She’s got issues yes, but she’s stronger than she lets on. Anyone thats throwing out the suicide card, well, that annoys the frikkin hell out of me.
Everyone has had their moments in life like that. Some are willing to take the high road and face their problems, others are willing to take the low road, and end it all without even giving the other options in their life a glimmer of a thought.
Lucy is trying. She’s in a low, dirty place right now, but she needed to be there. Sometimes, you have to hit rock bottom before you realize what you’ve taken for granted. And sometimes, it’s needed to make you soar as a person. She’ll be fine. She’ll move on. Just let her get over this episode of her life. She’ll be a better friend to others and a stronger her, inwardly.
Canny July 9, 2012, 1:13 AM EST.
GAH!!! This is so selfless! I’m (in all honesty) not used to seeing Lucy like this. I’m sl glad that this turned out that she did actually leave a message for this girly girl. Mike totally flipped his **** and showed what an insecure slightly ******* he was in front of his “gf”. Maybe she sees him for who he is, and maybe she has faith he’ll mature. Either way, this storyline will make for good readin in the future!!!

I wish I had something entertaining to say. I’ve hit a low in my career.

I agree, I said earlier: Mike tends to overreact to things. “Sandy got a text from Lucy? SHE’S RUINING MY LIFE” as an example.
I said before as well, it isn’t exactly “abuse” per se, it’s like one of those animes where they hit each other on the head in a comical fashion, like in Hetalia.
Neospector July 9, 2012, 1:25 AM EST.
I don’t think that anyone could interpret this as a suicidal note of any sort, because Lucy is clearly alive a little into the future past this message’s reception. I personally believe that Lucy will get through it physically and outwardly intact, but she’ll be suffering inwards for a long time to come. Even if Mike does eventually make amendments, I’ve little doubt that scene will not leave her easily. Scars over the heart are no easy burden.

and in addition this:
my brother and I are playing around.
my brother kicks me in the shin and makes some comment about how dorky I am.
does that make him abusive?
If it does, please tell me, because I was not aware that I came from an abusive family. ;
My brother teases me all the time, and I admit that sometimes, it hurts my feelings a little.. but I have the best big brother in the world. He’s always looking out for me. He’s always trying to protect me. He never purposefully teases me about an issue that he knows I consider sensitive, and he certainly doesn’t tell people embarrassing things about me that could earn me pure, relentless bully-ing for the rest of my school-life.
He remembers things that I wanted after I’ve long forgotten them.
I get a bad virus and he goes through a closet full of junk and digs out my favorite toy from when we were kids and brings it to me.
He buys some candy and takes the ribbon off of it and remembers that I like ribbon and saves it for me.
My father tries to be a complete *** and my brother gets in the way and tells him off because he knows I can’t.
99% of the time, he may roughhouse with me and call me names.
But it’s VERY obvious that he cares about me and thinks about me, and it’s very clear that when he kicks me in the shin, it’s because we’re roughhousing, and not because he’s trying to hurt me.
Kids roughhouse all the time. They continue to do so through Middle School, High School, College, and some of them are still trying to roughhouse in their wheelchairs. But they’re only roughhousing. They’re only playing. Even when they occasionally kick a little too hard.
They don’t mean any harm or threat by it, and it’s abundantly clear.
Now sure, if the person I’m with bruises like their skin’s made of paper, I try not to do that. But even then I’ll occasionally forget and give them a mild punch in jest. People forget themselves, or they underestimate their own strength. It happens. but we’re just playing around, we’re not fighting.
I’m not attacking, I’m not trying to hurt, and I’m not trying to threaten, and they know that. and I know that when my brother kicks my shin a little too hard.

Lucy, that is one of the strongest things you have ever done. There are so many things that she could have put in that text, but instead she sucked it up and did probably one of the very last things she has ever wanted to do because she cares. She seriously and full heartedly CARES!
I do hope that Mike learn this and treats her with some more compassion after this but I damn sure hope he doesn’t start crushing on her again -.- she deserves better than that. She needs a friend in him, anything else is a slap in her face.
Kikimmicoa July 9, 2012, 2:02 AM EST.
I knew it. Lucy you are incredible. At your lowest you still found the will to do whatever would make Mike happy. Please Mike. For the love of everything find it in your heart to apologize to her. It’s not enough but you can at least do that after this epic display of character. Feel that cleaning out your insides Mike? That’s moral FIBER. Savor the flavor and keep on chewin’
David July 9, 2012, 2:04 AM EST.
It looks like Lucy finally accepted that she can’t make Michael happy anymore, and as Augustus suggested she will have to cope and be contempt with the fact that he’ll be happy with Sandy.
I’m not sure that this will completely sooth Michael’s feelings though, i can sense more drama in the Force.

All you people who are saying: oh Lucy your so amazing, Nike your an *******, your all stupid. Lucy made his life a hell. It’s stupid that people think one good deed makes up for it all. It doesn’t. She made him miserable to the point he exploded at her the way he did. It took him screaming at her to wake her up from her fantasy. What? Just cause she’s a girl she’s allowed to be a mean manipulative bitch who is forgiven for making her friend and the boy she liked miserable, just by telling the girl he actually loves that she is sorry? That’s crap. She deserves to be unhappy and further more, she doesnt even deserve Paulo’s sympathy. Now Paulo will probably risk things with Jaz. And Mike will feel like a total jerk. That’s what she wants. That’s what manipulators do. They lay the seeds of their main goal, and watch them sprout. She will have Mike and Pualo back, fighting over her in no time.

I’d say you need to quit looking at the surface of people……. but I don’t think you even see the surface of her.
You’re doing the same thing to Lucy that some people are doing to Mike.
you’re trying to remove all possibility of depth.
Very few things are what you see on the simple, most outward surface—— much less what you see at a simple and irrational glance…..
I agree that some people are over the top….. for sure….
but being over the top about Lucy makes you just as bad……..
headdesk July 9, 2012, 2:36 AM EST.
Now, I am hoping Mike can see this for what it is, but I’m worried this might be the outcome:
Mike, hellbent on demonizing Lucy, takes this as a facade, and upon coming back, demands to know what her game is, doesn’t believe Lucy denying it, and yells at her further, damaging her psyche further
I REALLY don’t want to see this happening, I really want Mike to see what this is for.
Emi July 9, 2012, 2:38 AM EST.
EAT A DICK MIKE! How’s that feel? Falling off your holier than thou pedestal. It would be the sweetest burn if Sandy said “Wow, you know what? Lets just try this some other time.” . I’m not a fan of Sandy to be honest and I was all for Mike getting his feelings off his chest in the December chapter but dude…DUDE. You immediately assume she was sabotaging your upcoming date? After Sandy just said she heard you were feeling down? What part of that sounds suspicious or like a scheme in the works? Now Mike’s the one with egg on his face.

… “Lucy made his life a hell.”
*stops reading for obvious superficiality*
about the comic: I fear one thing: that from now on, mike and sandy will talk about lucy and do nothing else, so that their evening together would be ruined. I fear this because mike is so stupid- ok ok, irrational, for you deeply-thinking guys - that he might still give all the fault for this to lucy.
boh... July 9, 2012, 3:12 AM EST.
Truly Mike never deserved Lucy as a friend anyway if she was willing to do this for him.
rjpoofy July 9, 2012, 3:29 AM EST.
Um, I’m so shocked that proper grammar has left me. In other words: The feelssss, they hurtses so baaad. On another note, I’m not going to choose sides between Mike and Lucy, because both of them are at fault, no matter if they didn’t realize it. It’s clear that Mike is a shy, sensitive soul who prefers to avoid problems and be gentle. Now, add Lucy into the equation, who happens to have developed a hard, rough outer shell in order to protect herself emotionally, and shows her affection/friendship by punching them playfully and calling them names. Did she ever hold cruel or negative intentions behind those words? No. She just finds it hard to communicate in another way, because pride gets in her way. Of course, Mike WOULD take offense to everything she’s said and done, but remained quiet in order to avoid problems. Which explains his explosion in “December”. His insults towards Lucy were completely out of hand and ironically abusive, but predictable. In my opinion, all of this was just a combination of miscommunication, teenage tendencies, and a lot of repressed anger.

You both are idiots, your arguments are invalid, and you can go to hell.
Now onto the comic, I’m gonna be really ****** if Mike agree’s with the text, and doesn’t have a moment of clarity that he might have gone overboard with treating her garbage in the “December” arc. I mean, Lucy is taking all the blame on herself, even if she was a lil’ rough around the edges, she isn’t as horrible as she makes herself appear. I do agree that I like that she is growing up more as a person.
kanashe July 9, 2012, 4:12 AM EST.
Ok, time to bust some arguments…
“All you people who are saying: oh Lucy your so amazing, Nike your an *******”
Actually I hate Adidas more. Reebok is a pretty cool guy though, yo can run for Miles in those, and doesn’t afftraid of anything.
“your all stupid”
Mine all stupid?
“Lucy made his life a hell. It’s stupid that people think one good deed makes up for it all.”
Actually people are taking their whole previous relationship into consideration, which was more than one life saving sittuation, and all that fun time they had together. So technically she didn’t make his life a hell.
And now about her manipulation - where did you, and your collegue get the idea that Lucy is manipulating people? There is nothing in the comic, that indicates this. So I do believe you’re the one that is living in his fantasy world, not Lucy. Though since she’s fictional character, she lives in fantasy world anyway… Nevermind that then. Anyway, try to read the comic without all that bias, since all this raging is rather unhealthy.
I admire your social skills. Like seriously: “your argument is invalid, your an idiot, go die under some rock”. You ever thought about career as a politician?
It would be interessting. Especially if Mike would confront Lucy, to tell her off even more. We would end up hitting 2k comments this time.
Though it’s interesting. If we would get pages showing that Sandy clearly manipulated Mike (which is clearly not the case now, of course), Mike sold his soul to the devil, and Lucy was only trying to make him happy, there would still be people whining that it’s not Mike fault at all, he was a nice guy, since he only yelled at her, and did not smack a bitch. You know, sometimes I think some of those people type this stuff just for sake of having different oppinion than everyone else.
“What? Just cause she’s a girl she’s allowed to be a mean manipulative bitch who is forgiven for making her friend and the boy she liked miserable, just by telling the girl he actually loves that she is sorry? ”
Actually yeah. This is how it works. You repent for what wrong you did, and hope for forgivness. You can make up for it for extra repent points. But “sorry” is mostly most important thing in whole process.
Most important thing now: manipulation, since both Edman and other one said something about it. Guys, pulling stuff from your stuff and throwing it at other commentors doesn’t make you a free thinker. It makes you look like a chimpanzee. There was nothing that implied Lucy is manipulating someone. You’re making things up. So you should take your own kind of medicine, and be yelled by someone to the point you’ll stop living in your fantasy world. Lucy at least have an excuse, since she’s fictional character, so it’s natural for her to inhabit fantasy world.
Commentor Zero July 9, 2012, 4:35 AM EST.
While the violence Lucy displayed towards Mike in the past WAS played for laughs then, I’m pretty sure Lucy is a deconstruction of a tsundere character. It was played for laughs because she was hitting him - had it been the other way around, it wouldn’t have been accepted. And now were seeing consequences that are often unseen. It was a laugh to Lucy, nd I don’t think she realised, but she did hurt Mike, a lot.
I know he’s hurt her too, and I think when you get to the bottom of it, they’re both good people at heart.
It kind of disturbs me how some people feel like the abuse doesn’t count because it’s female on male - men do get abused, and it’s because of that attitude that so many of them are afraid to come forward.
I actually hope she does leave him alone, at least for a while - they both need to cool off and grow upbefore they can move forward.
Dolphinbread July 9, 2012, 4:38 AM EST.
I’m so hoping Lucy grows up and manages to be with Paulo. They’re a really good fit. Mike can have Sandy for all I care. There’s been too much “damage” between Mike and Lucy for there to ever be a true relationship.
But this message Lucy sent is really strong of her. It’s good for her to be this way, though I wish her heart didn’t have to be ripped out for this to happen.
Hurry back to your friends soon Lucy, they’re waiting for you. (in the next chapter I bet, since this one is Mike & Sandy central)

Jlaw July 9, 2012, 4:46 AM EST.
As far as some people think Lucy was an abusive b***h, she wasn’t doing anything intentional just for fun and laughter of hurting others. Maybe many don’t remember but many “punches” was done because Lucy heard that Mike wanted to do something bad, naughty or her being teased upon. Also Mike had a few situations where he was rough with others and noone really remembers that does it
In my opinion Lucy is a person that has a hard time communicating with others, is a bit rough and one could say abusive, but not really such a bad person. She doesn’t hurt people intentionally and for quite some time is trying to be a better person. Each step shows that she can be good, though her reputation will linger for a while.
In my opinion Mike is a person that holds everything in him just to blow when the pressure is too big. He clearly showed that he can hurt people - those who say that he just blew his steam on Lucy must remember that he suddenly stopped making her feel bad when he heard his parents came just to “tell the good news”. People who are high on emotions don’t suddenly change their attitude. People who intentionally do/say something to hurt others do. In critical moments he’s acting before he thinks if it’s right or wrong. If he thought things through, he could let Lucy know what he feels in a less traumatic way
I don’t think both of them as bad, nor are they good. They are normal teenagers, trying to cope with their problems. I also hope that Mike won’t think of something stupid to do afterwards, but looking back at what he did in various situations… It’s not likely
Ranadiel July 9, 2012, 5:00 AM EST.
I, … Just , wow, just wow…
In comparison with the bitch she was in the earlier days, she has indeed gone a long way now. Like people mentioned before, she has grown up now. RESPECT…
And I hope she’ll stick to her words and leave Mike alone.
The the following question:
Should Mike apologize to Lucy?? Probably yes, but will it be neccesary? Isn’t it for the better that they’re keeping their distance for now? The hurt has been done, so an apology can always come later…
Little by little Lucy is earning my respect. And somewhere I hope that she’ll end up wit Augustus… ‘Cause that guy probably needs some compagny and Lucy ‘s his match.
And for Mike,… I hope he’ll come at ease now, and that he’ll have a good time with Sandy. ^_^

Well this was expected. Lucy is growing mature starting here. Finally! No offense but her bitchy nature needed harsh treatment. Mike may had his jerk moments. But Lucy got many for her record. Mike may made a dick move but look to the results. Seriously I don’t know another way to make her wake up for reality otherwise she would keep bullying him forever.
Lucy is being a much better character only now. Yes, it’s now just perfect if Mike feel remorse and try to conciliate with her but what’s the best in this page is she finally REALIZED she was selfish.
Now it’s time to Mike to stop being such an oversensitive wuss.

First off; much kudos to Lucy for being the better, more mature person in this tiff. Again; Mike should really stop considering himself the victim here - I get that he had gone through a lot of physical bruising and scarring…but that doesn’t really mean that scarring Lucy’s psyche is automatically justified.

mikedawn July 9, 2012, 6:48 AM EST.
I’ve seen this argument few times already. When the girl do the abuse, it’s good, boy - bad.
Let’s get one thing straight, guys. Girls and boys are DIFFERENT. Okay? There is no stronger, better gender, both genders are different. Now to the point:
When girl is abused, she mostly can’t stand for herself. Since physical conflict would in most cases end up with male beating her more badly. So women generally can’t stand up for themselves directly, that’s why most people consider girl being abused to be worst thing. Because boy can easily protect himself when girl abuses him. He can block her, hold her hands, do many things, that wouldn’t harm her, yet would be a way to defend himself from further abuse.
Another thing: Mike didn’t ever do anything like that. He never said, he felt this is wrong, he never before complained. When girl is abused you get clear signs that what you’re doing is wrong. Since yeah, females are more sensitive. But if you’re a guy, if something is wrong, you should tell about it, give a sign, anything. In previous chapters we’ve seen various Mike reactions, but nothing was anything close to actually telling Lucy, that something is wrong like normal person would do.
@Me, myselve and I
Yes, I’m sure she should end with Augustus, since he needs company. Now we need a pedophile to be paired with Molly. Since pedophiles, like rapists are feeling lonely sometimes.
After this I would rather expect Mike to went quiet for few pages. I hardly can believe he’ll enjoy the meeting afterwards, that’s for sure. So in the end Lucy ruined it for him as he predicted in “December”. Hmmm I’m trying to feel bad that I made fun of guy claiming she’s manipulative.
Yes, she’s much better, much more mature character now. Except she’s not much of a character now since she’s being alone in her room, sucking in all the colours. Which is far more mature. Though not very interesting.
Commentor Zero July 9, 2012, 6:52 AM EST.
I have a bad feeling that this will make mike feel bad for what he said to Lucy. And he’ll go back to Lucy again :L. Or something related to that. I sure hope not though cause that’s to cliche or how ever you spell it
Smoky July 9, 2012, 6:58 AM EST.
So kids, what did we learn today?
MIKE IS A DICCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Calico July 9, 2012, 7:12 AM EST.
You know? Lucy did act pretty nasty with Mike, but I think it’s unfair to say she made his life a living hell. If I recall correctly, Lucy’s saved Mike’s *** plenty of times and risked her life for him. While Lucy is violent, I always got the sense most of it was “ANIMU STYLE” exaggeration. Sort of like how characters don’t actually shoot sparkles from their eyes when in adoration of something. Yeah she does hit or hurt him but I doubt she’s ever strangled him, like someone’s example up there. ^
In the end, the emotional beat down may have given Lucy the personal growth, but if this bothered Mike so bad in the first place why didn’t he ever bother to talk to her about it? Talk to her parents? Get her help? If this is about the abuse, then in that respect I don’t think Mike was ever her friend. He didn’t care enough to get her the help she so clearly needed when she failed to mature. No, this isn’t a result of all the abuse. It’s the result of Sandy misunderstanding Lucy’s psychological issues, as well as Mike’s fear of Lucy trying to break him and Sandy up ever since her poor reaction at the lunch table.
If Lucy was on a cliff, Mike did his damn best to shove her off, and hoped she miraculously sprouted wings. Luckily for her Augustus and Paulo tossed her a parachute.
P-Wrappa July 9, 2012, 7:24 AM EST.

I’m appalled that Sandy barely remembered Lucy’s name after having received a similar text from her… on Michael’s phone… just a couple minutes after texting him that they would meet soon. Ok she’s a model, she has a lot on her mind and work and school, but still..
Cavara July 9, 2012, 9:03 AM EST.
P.S…… your actually a blond right? Riiiiiight?
Huh? July 9, 2012, 9:37 AM EST.
Texts like this are less the sign of being strong and mature than a further manifestation of clingy-ness and pushover-ness in a weak-willed character. Instead of facing up to her own feelings and going her own way, she bows and scrapes and tries to fix things by basically laying on the ground and asking to be kicked.
“It was all me, it’s my fault, they’ll be happier without me around” The sign of someone strong? No, the sign of someone debasing themselves in an attempt to placate. If the abuse keeps coming, it’ll just generate the thought “I deserve it”. It’s also the one and only “out” a weak-willed character sees towards maybe being friends with the person again. Almost as a sort of begging for pity angle.
Basically, it doesn’t show that Lucy has changed all that much. She’s just taking the opposite tack in desperately trying to keep that last thread linking her and Mike alive. She thinks “If I do this and leave him alone, maybe he’ll stop hating me, and maybe I can at least be around him silently without him trying to push me away”
Still clingy, still desperate.
Booka July 9, 2012, 9:58 AM EST.

I can’t read comments on this comic anymore without cracking up. Mike’s a dick, i hate mike, mike you should be in love with lucy. Really it’s getting out of hand, save the fangasms for the forums, this section’s for commenting on the quality and story twists of the comic.
That being said, i’ve been haning wondering exactly what she had done with his phone from the earlier chapter, i was stuck not knowing if she had done something or was just staring at it in shock or disbelief or whatnot. It was a great hooking moment that lead up to this, i have to admit i wasn’t expecting it.

OH MY GOD WHAT IF SHE COMMITS SUICIDE!! That would be horrible! All the good moments of Lucy making Mike embarrassed, their rivalry, their good times…. Seriously! Taeshi, please don’t make that happen
Oh, by the way Kit(a few comments above) I’ll help you fill it!

I see… Alright.
Well, thank you Lucy for being the biggest person I’ve ever known. Too bad how this is going to end, though. Or should I say something more along the lines of “too bad how this is going to reach its end”? This nightmare is going to become worse several times over before even a shred of a lining of hope for something right to happen appears.
Taeshi, you’ve gone through a lot to think your past chapters through and to reach where you are now. It leaves me wondering just how hard your life must have been through your eyes to set this story into motion. I’m going to continue reading not for the enjoyment I once took in reading this comic, but for the dread in my stomach that I feel when I read it now. I want to know how this will all end. I want to see it every step of the way.

In my opinion, as I have stated so many times, is that though Mike’s days were troubled with instances of abuse arguably Lucy’s fault, he downplays HIS part in much of it, and ultimately what she did to him… didn’t weigh up to what happened.
Lucy did not deserve to be called a parasite, did not deserve to be stabbed right in the insecurity and have the implement twisted and jammed further in. She does not deserve this unadulterated hate and paranoia that Mike shows for her.
Everybody keeps saying that what Lucy did in the past justifies what Mike did now.
The worst thing is that it is made very clear that it wasn’t that Mike was sad about how he was treated, he was just fine, just hunky dory, just swell, until Sandy told him she didn’t like to see him hurt. It isn’t his own interest he protects, it’s what HE THINKS Sandy’s is, which on the last page I began to doubt are so very close to what she ACTUALLY thinks as he believes.
What Lucy did was as a kid who couldn’t know any better, to another kid who just as often provoked her and laughed at their antics, because she didn’t know how to express herself.
What Mike did was as a fifteen/sixteen year old boy, quite old enough to think and measure his words to at least SOME degree, to an insecure wreck in the middle of some serious emotional problems, because he didn’t like feeling guilty.
What Lucy did was not heartfelt, was more accidental, was at least somewhat mirrored, it’s not like he never hit her back, and it was because she didn’t know how to express her feelings for him. Lucy wasn’t the best of friends, but SHE WAS A FRIEND. He PLAYED and LAUGHED with her.
What Mike did was spiteful, knowing of the likely consequences, to drive her away once and for all, because HE was feeling GUILTY and wanted to make sure HE COULD NEVER GO BACK. NOT her, but HIM. She’s shown him nothing of the sort of thing he complains about in months, yet he calls her out on it, on things she no longer DOES!
I’m not saying that Lucy is the most innocentest of widdle cyoot kitties, her hands are not clean. Ignorance is not an excuse, she could have made an effort to learn how to woo him instead of stubbornly going on in the same way for so very long. I could extrapolate on Lucy’s faults just as I’ve done with Mike’s, and almost as long and almost as severe.
What I am saying is that Lucy and Mike are BOTH at fault.
Mike, however, bears the most guilt. What Lucy did… does not deserve what Mike did to her.
Biblioholic July 9, 2012, 11:51 AM EST.
I think when it comes down to it the mess they’re in right now can be at least partially blamed on several individuals with no one person shouldering all the blame.
Loved your comment, that pretty much expands on my comment to P-Wrappa that blame lies at the feet of not just one person.

In a less serious form and on a less serious note, Mike sort of reminds me of the man who could do anything he chooses to set his mind on in that one music video.
He set his mind on Sandy, and he’ll do every single shady dirty bloody thing he thinks that he needs to do to get and keep her.

Ouch, there is so much pain in this page it’s hard to withstand it all. I wonder if Mike is actually feeling any of it, or if he’s so excited to finally be with Sandy that he’s blinded to it…

I am really sick of so many people saying ‘Mike started it because he left her for Sandy’ convieniently forgetting that Lucy was rough with him from the start, and he made it clear he didn’t like it: http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c25/p2.html http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c25/p4.html

Floweramon July 9, 2012, 12:35 PM EST.
Really, the high road here would be no text at all, or a text that doesn’t mention herself outside of the opening line. The fact that she sent a text basically saying “I am so awful” means she is (probably unconsciously) trying to evoke a pity party so that she doesn’t lose Mike completely. I feel like Mike is going to detect this and get super angry again because that’s what he did last time she tried to do this in person. Remember that? It was basically the most pathetic thing to watch, Lucy scraping for little tidbits of his affection by making a show about her doing exactly what he wants…

I honestly hope this won’t ruin the Mike x Sandy relationship. Mike wanted a relationship with Lucy, he tried and she rejected him. Mikes response, and I paraphrase, “Ok, but we can’t hold off on this forever.” Lucy hasn’t been a good friend, but she has been there, so she doesn’t deserve the treatment Mike gave her. However, she did have her chance to be with Mike, and pushed him away, right into Sandy’s arms. Sandy is caring, compassionate and genuine, and she and Mike make a good pair I think. Paulo is a nice guy with a tough guy exterior, and Lucy is a nice girl with a tough girl competitive exterior. They compliment each other perfectly, even if asking Lucy to drop her love for Mike just becuase he doesn’t love her back seems a little harsh.

I tried to be friends with this one guy in my class in 8th grade. I would just tell him hi and it would make my day. I just wanted to get to know him because he seemed nice, but his ‘cousin’ kept saying that I should leave him alone. I think he said that I should leave him alone, but the only thing I did that would make him say that was this one time where I rubbed his head (I guess it’s a way to tell a guy that I like him). This one day this dude called me a stalker… To this day, I don’t think that was nice, but me being a safety first person, I told him that I wasn’t going to bother him anymore. I was so sad…
But 8th grade graduation, I got a hug from him.
And now I have a significant other. It’s a different person though.
tl;dr: I know that feel, Lucy

“We’ve updated the Bittersweet Club International comic library with ‘Accidents Will Happen’, an 18-page chapter where Abbey GETS WHAT HE DESERVES”
And by “Abbey gets what he deserves”, I presume you mean sex?
Nimbus July 9, 2012, 1:33 PM EST.
I agree, this chapter is really sad. But hey, there’s one thing that I describe as good: Lucy truly loves Mike and just wants the best for him. It shows that Lucy is a true friend, even when Mike did treated her badly, she was a great person, so Sandy. That’s good. The whole except that was a bit angst…
rilakkumalover July 9, 2012, 1:44 PM EST.
I don’t understand what people could hold against Lucy at this point. She contacted Sandy after realizing that she had been the one who saw fault in her actions, and wanted to let her know that she had no more reason to fear for Mike’s safety.
She realized that Mike had never known her reasons for ‘abusing’ him, and sought to make her intentions clearer. It was too late, of course, since Mike had never made it clear that he actually minded how she treated him.
When Mike finally showed his actual feelings, Lucy had only had a short time to try to adjust and appease him while Mike had been silently fuming for a while and had already made up his mind without bothering to come out and discuss it with Lucy. He had stopped valuing her once Sandy expressed concern, and in his mind that meant choosing between Sandy and Lucy. Obviously he chose Sandy, and he hoped Lucy would get the message that their years of friendship was over on her own.
Mike did not handle his feelings well, and Lucy was too caught up in the emotional flurry and her own pride to react quickly enough and correct his opinion of her. Hopefully, Lucy will be able to do this now that she has a total grasp of the situation - even if that means she and Mike will no longer be friends.
KiwiKoala July 9, 2012, 1:59 PM EST.
… this text does not feel real to me. It also makes me pretty standoffish towards Sandy. Not that she’s a bad person or unlikeable or anything, she’s just… emotionally offensive to me as a girl. I did not expect Lucy’s text to include a self-depreciating reflection on herself, nor an explanation of her future intentions to leave Mike alone, because of how Sandy brought the text up. “I just heard you were a little down lately” implies that the text was short, simple, to the point, and completely unrevealing about anything that actually happened in December between Mike and Lucy. The idea that Lucy basically martyred herself and all Sandy had to say about it was “I just heard you were a little down lately” to her boyfriend instead? Fills me with a particular confusion and dislike. What sort of girl - and a teenaged one at that - goes, “Oh, look, a text from my boyfriend’s phone from a girl - a girl I don’t know/keep forgetting the name and context for - wherein she tells me that I’m ‘right’ (again, no recognition of the context there), and that she’s the reason my boyfriend may have been upset recently, and that she’s no longer going to affiliate with him. Sounds like he’s just been a little down lately.” What? Where’s the, “Who’s Lucy?” Where’s: “Hey, I got this text from this girl - is everything alright? What happened?” Because if Sandy had remembered Lucy, she would have been: “Oh yeah, I got a text from that girl you said was hurting you.” Sandy didn’t even register who Lucy is. And how in the world did Sandy not detect that something larger was at play after a text like this? Are we to believe that the only reason Sandy took the text in this fashion is because Lucy told her not to reply to it? That she randomly just accepted everything that Lucy said without question, thought, or reaction? That Sandy’s answer to, “Wow, that’s a lot of emotional ouchies coming from this person,” is: “Aw, my boyfriend’s been down in the dumps? I gotta cheer him up!” ? I get that we’re supposed to be having a sad oh-poor-Lucy emotional angst-fest, but this text just makes Sandy look like an a**hole to me. It displays an emotional disconnection that makes me very suspicious about who Sandy is as a person.
It also has me sitting on the edge of my seat anxiously waiting for the next page to come out. Sandy, just who are you exactly?
nyllyn July 9, 2012, 2:19 PM EST.
Ah man, this reminds me of me and strider talking about if Lucy took Mike’s phone or not back in December.
So she DID send a text to Sandy Even if the act is a bit sneaky, she still had good intentions
I’ve gained a bit more respect for her as well. She is, as she was trying to do in December, truly bowing out gracefully, explain her actions, and hoping that Sandy will continue to make Mike happy.
This text might magnify the guilt that Mike felt back in December (Remember the look on Mike’s face after Lucy left? IMO, if he truly hated Lucy, he wouldn’t have that look.). Mike is a good guy, but he kept a lot of his feelings bottled up and it exploded in Lucy’s face. I do have a feeling that had he been able to talk about any of his issues amongst his friends (including Lucy), that explosion wouldn’t have happened; things that were said would not have been said.
If Mike realizes that, I wouldn’t be surprised if he broke down after seeing that text. Nor would I be happy to see that happen (I’m sorry, I don’t believe the whole “he deserves it” angle).
@nyllyn: I think it’s safe to assume that Sandy didn’t truly jump to any conclusions when she saw that text. I think she WAS expecting something nasty when she noticed that it was Lucy texting and not Mike, but she wanted to see what she had to say.
One can hear a lot about another person and dislike what they hear. But if they hear something coming from them personally, their perspective may change.
Chocothunda July 9, 2012, 2:21 PM EST.
I can’t wait to see mikes reaction to reading this. I like how sandy was pretty nonchalant about getting the text. She really is a cool character.
I don’t think either mike or Lucy deserve the crap they throw at each other. They’re still kids trying to figure out who they even are. All that crap that happened when they were younger seems typical of growing up. You make friends, feelings change, and misunderstandings galore. Sometimes friends pull through sometimes they don’t. It’s life.
Loving the drama ride in this comic.

I don’t think Mike is all that innocent and sweet, lol. Even when someone hits a soft spot, drawing a bloody nose from Paulo isn’t exactly correct. >3>;
What I’m telling total Mike lovers that believe that EVERYTHING is on Lucy is that… He isn’t all that innocent. ;w; Through all the abuse and soft spots Lucy must of hit, this could have and should have happened before December if it weren’t for a few factors. >3>;
Mew July 9, 2012, 3:14 PM EST.
All I can say is I’ve agreed with Lucy throughout the entire story. Growing up, I was either a loner or I hung-out with guys, pretty much because girls wouldn’t accept me, being someone who resisted steriotypes such as dolls and make-up. Instead I clung to the few friends I had and my pets, along with wild animals that would be abandoned, etc. Recently my life quite litterally fell apart, and I’m severely depressed, as I’ve been for a little more than a year. When you constantly feel like dying, you get detached, just as Lucy has. She was Mike’s rival only because she wanted to hide feelings, at least until she thought she could reveal them. Being rejected, she had to realise that he didn’t want her, so she tried to do what she thought was best. Mike hasn’t realised that Lucy’s behavior is only that of a typical outcast trying to be social, and instead, he passed it off as bullying. Thinking of everything that she did as pure hate for him, he lost the friendly feelings that he had once felt for her, and turned her into an enemy. Lucy has had to wonder why he hadn’t caught on, and just like I have, pushed further, unknowing that this would destroy any hope of a friendship between her and Mike.
I’ve only said this because I’ve done exactly what she has, and ended up getting cussed out by an angry teacher trying to defend someone. It hurts to realise that you don’t know how to act correctly in society. Being depressed also adds to that, and eventually nothing seems to change, and you sink further into this state of brokenness.
By the way, Lucy’s messages sounded suicidal at first, at least to me.
Kady July 9, 2012, 3:42 PM EST.
I don’t like the way this is going. It looks like if Mike told her to go jump in a ditch, she’d go find a blacksmith to make her a shovel made out of diamonds and dig a ditch for herself, then jump in and get someone to fill it up with dirt made out of glass shards.

I hope Sandy will use this as an opportunity to question whether Mike loves her or Lucy.
No wonder Lucy’s so depressed. She’s given up. Not just on Mike, but probably on love entirely. Because Mike was the perfect boy she never appreciated until it was too late. The boy nice enough to become her first friend and who loved her despite her sarcastic nature, who saw her inner beauty. The boy who would risk his life for her.
And now… that boy has abandoned her. For some barely-real, only-seen-in-pictures beauty. In some long-distance relationship sent from Hell.
God, Mike, you’re an a-hole.
GUEST July 9, 2012, 6:20 PM EST.
I think that Mike will try to say something to her, but she’ll be GONE! To pursue a musical career and find herself and finally love herself. That’s a theory, of course, but I truly believe that the only way for her to move forward is to break from her friends and find someting that she can pride herself in doing. It would also help her express herself, via lyrics. JUST a theory!

It’s probably already been mentioned, but I wonder what exactly Sandy thought about that message. She probably took more out of it than just “Mike has been really down.” I mean, she was given a whole new perception of Lucy, a girl who according to Mike would fight with or physically hurt him even though they were supposed to be friends. Sandy was so worried about Mike being constantly hurt and she is probably very unfamiliar with people who seem to do what Lucy does as a defense mechanism or just because it’s in their natures. Granted those are not real excuses to hurt anyone, but unlike nominal friends who just abuse and take advantage of the other, Lucy has genuine care for Mike. Sandy has a chance to see that Lucy isn’t that type of evil, heartless person.
Now, my question is how did Sandy interpret the message? Did she see this as a sign that Lucy has had a good side to her all along and that she may have judged Lucy too quickly? Or does Sandy think that Lucy may have been the type who hurts without any regard for others, but has seen the error of her ways and is now finally doing the right thing?
These type of questions really keep me coming back. It’s not the drama so much as I enjoy how all these characters react to situations in their individual ways, and I’m always curious to see their methods and motives. ^_^
And so I can level with anyone who believes I hate any characters, I don’t.
Sandy has shown she’s nothing but a sweetheart who wants to be with Mike. Her only crime would be saying she didn’t like Lucy. And that was justified because she didn’t want anyone hurting Mike. And now she may have the chance to see everything a little clearly. So far, I think she’s forgiven Lucy
Lucy is wrapped in a lot of complexities. She’s not merely a bully. She has honest care for Mike, but emotions that she may have pushed down are coming back and she doesn’t know how to deal with them or express them. Mike has been a bit of a crutch for her at times, but she didn’t think twice about jumping in the river for Mike or defending him outside the bar. He’s worth more to her than a crutch.
Mike is just a boy having trouble. He was friends with Lucy, and he did care for her, but now he’s wondering if it was worth it, seeing as he’s been beaten down many times. He just wants to be happy as much as anyone else in this series. I see no real reason any characters should be hated. They all deal with tough situations and personal flaws, creating coping mechanisms and basically living life. I like the flaws and redeemable qualities or acts any introduce. Kinda why I don’t hate Augustus for how he treated Daisy because now he lets her be happy, and has strong reasoning over his feelings.
I do see that there are some things that NEED to be addressed. Now, and this is my opinion feel free to disagree, Mike really needs to realize that Lucy was trying to be better. Before she told him she loved him, she was going against what she had learned and all she had done to be honest and straight-forward about how much the things he did as a friend meant to her, especially when she would do all these harsh things. She was seeing something was wrong after Zachary talked to her. I think he needs to see there’s no reason to hate Lucy.
I also see that Lucy has a problem forgetting about her other friends, so I would probably refer her to what Micheal said before about other people who care at this point in the story. http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c28/p13.html (12th panel) She could also try the method she was using with Mike before her confession with everyone. She’d be able to express herself better, not have to feel so angry so often, and she might even feel better because she won’t have to hide behind a mask and people she cares about will know she cares.
Other things could probably be added, but these points I can’t help but feel are most important in mending; just so no one ends up lonely again. Not Mike, Lucy, Sandy, or any of their friends. Sorry for such a long comment, but my mind went a’working.
nightengale July 9, 2012, 8:47 PM EST.
I think the bigger person in this situation is lucy
She’s not going of for revenge and making mike out to be the devil
She still loves mike (whether as a friend or more than a friend) and instead of letting those feelings turn bitter she’s growing up and becoming a better person because of it
This text just proves my point

Also, I’m glad ARH got updated!

Or, you know, you could just see if she actually means it before you jump to a conclusion. -shock and awe-
what a brilliant idea, yes?
Some people try appology as a tactic—- other people appologize because they actually mean it, and then they actually leave them alone.
She’s never done this before, therefore we cannot be sure whether she means it or not.
But I would either assume that she does, or wait and see. I would not automatically assume she’s a relentless witch who will never learn her lesson….. especially since, oh hey, she’s just a kid.

Ah, I was so happy when Mike basically ruined Lucy and when Jazz almost broke up with Paulo. PauloxLucy FTW! But now she has to go and feel regret. Crap. What happened to all of those times earlier when Mike makes it obvious he loves Lucy anyway? You know, way in the past? I absolutely hate to see Lucy so sad, and Mike’s irrational change of feelings makes me want to kill him. U know what? I HATE SOOOO MUCH! But hey, she makes fot a good story. Keep it up! Oh boy…don’t like the way this was worded. How could’ve Lucy known that Sandy was ‘right’ about Mike and Lucy’s relationship unless she heard or was told about it; the two of them are hardly considered friends. Maybe it’s just me who’ll be the only one picking up on this and not Sandy…
And maybe this is just me riding the late bus and reading too much into ‘December’ but, in all honesty, Lucy needed to know Mike’s true feelings…and Mike f’ed it up.
They were having fun like old times, which brought down his Anti-Lucy barrier; Mike realizes that he still has feelings towards her. Then in comes Sandy who has only been told of the abusive nature Lucy has and dislikes her; Mike, of course, loves her and needs to desperately hold onto(long distance relationships are tough to keep up), so he puts back up his Anti-Lucy barrier.
Lucy takes Augustus’ word and tells him to be happy and it was thrown back in her face. Mike, in his desperation and fear(and maybe hearing a rejection from Lucy instead of a congrats), severs his feelings towards Lucy by not only flat out rejecting her, but to destroy whatever would be left of her after the fallout, only to then half-assedly tell how he ‘feels’ about her.
Thus brings about Lucy ‘purging’ herself of her selfishness and-turnabout-the message she sent to Sandy.
Adolesence is THE bitch. Unresolved issues and repressed feelings are mentally damaging; trust me, I know. I just hope Mike realizes this before it gets worse than it’s starting to seem…

Goddam Taeshi, you’re so clever. I for one was skeptical that you could pull off the story from all the drama you added before this chapter, and it’s all flowing well and making sense. Aw crap. I was happy to think that Lucy was going to be more mature but she just turned on self-blame mode.
Hal July 10, 2012, 1:23 AM EST.
You guys do know that she had others make her think so that’s how she saw what she was doing to mike and mike showed that to her sevral times too in other chapters so don’t feel too srry for lucy because she became from a new born baby looking for her mommys milk to a woman who is enjoying life.
mikedawn July 10, 2012, 1:24 AM EST.
@Neospector: Those early comics were incredibly compressed. Just because we aren’t seeing it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. And anyway, my point was that Lucy was abrasive (do you like that word better?) towards Mike from the beginning, and while Mike did put up with it at first, there was a point when they were very young that he made it very clear that he didn’t like what Lucy was doing and didn’t want to be around her.
Floweramon July 10, 2012, 1:35 AM EST.
CONTROL UR URGES LUCY
that just depresses me tons, putting all the blame onto herself like that. really shows you how greatly Mike’s words influenced her way of thinking
Milly July 10, 2012, 1:44 AM EST.
Her message was worse than I thought. WHY LUCY WHY DO YOU BLAME YOURSELF
I never thought blaming was ever good. This does, sadly show Lucy’s true affection and consideration for Mike, but also the destruction she’ll put herself in…
Just-A-Lurker July 10, 2012, 1:58 AM EST.
Jesus Henry Christ, people!!
It. Is. A. STORY. A comic book STORY.
The characters are not real. The universe they live in is not real.
The characters have no possible way to manipulate anyone.
I don’t understand why you all have to be so critical over what happens to any given character in a COMIC.
It is not real life. It will not influence real life in any way. The actions of a few characters in a COMIC will not, in any way, affect our world.
On a lighter note, keep up the good work, Taeshi! The comic looks great!
TurtleMan July 10, 2012, 2:07 AM EST.
I like funny things. I started reading for the funny. I haven’t seen funny in a while. Can the funny come back for a while please?
MiM July 10, 2012, 2:25 AM EST.
And really, on the page before, someone was stupid enough to write their name as Mike and Lucy and post as if the were the characters?
*clap* *clap* *clap*
I applaud your stupidity.
TurtleMan July 10, 2012, 2:39 AM EST.
Wow. I’m so proud of Lucy for doing this… It shows that she’s really matured, and I’m curious to see how Mike will react.
My guess is that he will probably feel bad for being so harsh with her, I know he could’ve handled that better. I’m excited for Wednesday!!!!!
Knuc July 10, 2012, 3:13 AM EST.
@Booka I only half-agree with you. I doubt she will use it as a way to “still be around silently” and I think she genuinely will do her best to stay away, but she does still seem to be too…not exactly clingy. Too attached? Not enough self-esteem? She really doesn’t put any faith in herself, and is only doing what she thinks will make Mike happiest, meaning she’ll take everything Mike says at face-value and that everything he said he meant 100% without any possible regrets. She doesn’t actually seem any stronger to me, though this may be a step in the right direction. An accidental step, but at least it’ll put her on the path. Maybe if she just said “I’ll stay away from Mike, take care of him” it might’ve been stronger. But saying she thinks he’s right, on the other hand…
Flashbomb7 July 10, 2012, 5:31 AM EST.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU CANT ITS SANDYS FAULT !!! NOT YOURS!
alfie the artick fox July 10, 2012, 5:35 AM EST.
MUSSSSSSSSSST SEEEEEEEEE, NEXT PAGE I JUST HAVE TO SEE MIKE REACTION. DX
Rozon July 10, 2012, 5:52 AM EST.
Wow! so dramatic! Cant wait for the update!!!
Bitterless July 10, 2012, 7:21 AM EST.
My guess is that mike will overreact, saying its some part of her plan, then sandy gets annoyed along the lines of “You’re not the same person anymore” They break up and then he hates Lucy even more… That would be an interesting way of things…. But hey bet taeshi’s storyline would be better anytime.
Nooneatall July 10, 2012, 7:40 AM EST.
Might it be that Sandy is “Just Beautiful”… and nothing more?
I’d float in nectar for weeks. Covered in sugar. Singing.
Cavara July 10, 2012, 8:38 AM EST.
We like to criticize the characters and analyze their relationships.
Neospector July 10, 2012, 10:47 AM EST.
Ah, teenagers, thy name is drama.
Invisible July 10, 2012, 11:07 AM EST.
I feel the state Lucy is in is necessary. She’s most likely going to reach a stage where she is just numb to everything at some point…this is the critical time for her to discover herself and repair her emotions. Then, she must decide how to go forward.
Iris July 10, 2012, 1:01 PM EST.
After reading that text, why does it feel like Mike won’t be as guilty as we believe?
Maybe it’ll earn him a lil’ scolding from Sandy that’ll instantly makes him feel guilty.
Cause, you know, if it’s from Sandy, he has to listen. >3>;
Mew July 10, 2012, 1:28 PM EST.

Aw, dammit. I’m crying. I’m crying now. Stop making me cry. This is like, number 3 or 4 now.
Lyons July 10, 2012, 3:44 PM EST.
Turtleman is an internet tough guy.
Also he’s taking this an inch more seriously than the people he’s complaining about if he has the need to overly analyze and criticize others like that.
It’s also called immersion, by the way. People like fantacizing about “what next”s and “how”s and “who”s. They also like discussi- I mean yelling at each other in an attempt to take part in the feeling of togetherness.
But I don’t think we can expect him to understand that
Either way. Plotplotplotplotplot.
Taeshi is doing it right.
starling July 10, 2012, 3:57 PM EST.
Ah, I found some evidence! If you read my first comment, please draw your attention to the following links!
Mike DID like Lucy, but SHE pushed him away!
Boo July 10, 2012, 4:08 PM EST.
it cant end like this i kno theyll make up
auto July 10, 2012, 4:26 PM EST.
Interesting how this text kinda justifies Mike’s previous reaction. Lets see now if Mike has a brain (yeah, right).
7 July 10, 2012, 5:01 PM EST.
I think alot of people explained why she had pushed him away.
That and I think he was a tad too forceful with her there.
Mew July 10, 2012, 6:07 PM EST.
Oh, really? I guess I didn’t notice that… And yeah, now that you mention it, he was rather forceful. My bad! But still, you have to admit that by her pushing him away like that that it could have easily lead to how bitter he is toward her now. Either way he had feelings for her, it didn’t work out as planned, and now she suddenly wants him back, but decides that it’d be best to let him go because Sandy makes him so happy.
Boo July 10, 2012, 6:49 PM EST.
@Boo: Another source of irritation could be that, after Lucy rejected his obvious desire to be more than friends, he tried to move on and eventually started a relationship with Sandy. And only once he’s in that relationship did Lucy confess that she loved him.
Overall, it’s a big emotional mess for the both of them.
Floweramon July 10, 2012, 7:03 PM EST.
“Those early comics were incredibly compressed. Just because we aren’t seeing it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.”
….. are we really going there? If we go by what we haven’t seen, Mike could be a complete monster. For that matter, we could spout out all kinds of stuff with any character.
That is fail logic. Just no. ;_________________;
headdesk July 10, 2012, 7:17 PM EST.
Dyoh, and also.
I’d just like to remind everyone that Mike played roughly with Lucy quite a few times too.
It’s not like she always played roughly, and poor fragile Mikie never played roughly and was always cowering in a corner begging her to stop.. =.=;
He shoved her, pinned her, tackled her, shoved her in the snow and pinned her in it, and plenty of other junk. THEY WERE JUST PLAYING THOUGH.
headdesk July 10, 2012, 7:31 PM EST.
…Did that just happen!? Q A Q
Choko July 10, 2012, 9:12 PM EST.
You’re right! That could easily be another source of irritation. Such drama these teenagers have created…
Boo July 10, 2012, 10:10 PM EST.
Well, saying that mikie initiated the relationship with sandy after the fact is just wrong. Heads up: he always preferred sandy to lucy, I think that kind of made her less receptible to him. Oh, and there was that whole: he’s neither able to appreciate what she actually has done for him and is kind of insensitive to what he already knows about Lucy.
Just saying. For my part I’m just glad Lucy’s developing. Happy Sandy’s not the kind to take a nice gesture the wrong way.
And a little worried Mike can’t admit that as much as he’s “right” he’s also about equal amounts “wrong” when it comes to how well/bad she treated him and vice versa.
Then again: teenagers are like that.
Actually, everyone is.
“I can’t possibly be wrong. Ever. Opinions are fact”
Something like that
starling July 10, 2012, 10:34 PM EST.
Excellent point o.o Wow, lots of great responses today! But you’re right: it is good to see Lucy maturing. Its refreshing, and I hope that she grows into a stronger woman that doesn’t need to cling or beat up others. By the way… How on earth do people do those cool faces? I’m dying to know!
Boo July 10, 2012, 10:42 PM EST.
hehehe. look in the right-hand corner of your comment box.
“Show Emotionicons” ^__________^
It’ll bring them all up. Just click the one you want and it’ll insert it. ;D
Must…. not…. stay up….. dying for next comic……. o.e
headdesk July 10, 2012, 10:50 PM EST.
Wait, really? Huh… That must be on the computer then cause I’m just commenting here and there from a Mobil device e_o
Boo July 11, 2012, 2:14 AM EST.
Well…….Mike I best be seeing you have a shattering of the mind scene soon or at least the shattering of the perception that she is all that is bad in your life. Because if I was in his situation well I would be thinking ‘I have brought great shame to my family and my life with my past actions….’ that and feeling great guilt for how cold I was.
Juria July 11, 2012, 11:28 PM EST.
Just so you people know…
“In short, Lucy did not steal Mike’s phone. However, they WERE having a good ol’ time before that phone distracted him and caused a transformation from Dr. Jeckyll to Mr. Hyde. Perhaps swimming in her misery she blearily asked the question “Why?” and decided it needed an answer. She would only have read it. And perhaps one text that was labeled “This is Lucy”, probably along the lines of “I’m sorry” or “I hope you and him have a wonderful life” or “make him happy.” The futhest it could have plausibly gone is if she copied down Sandy’s number and plans to call her later.”
I predicted this.
Biblioholic July 13, 2012, 8:07 AM EST.
I don’t even want Mike and Lucy to end up together, she deserves much better. Also Sandy deserves better the Mike.
L.R August 10, 2012, 11:08 PM EST.
skillet, has a song called -lucy- and sounds similar to one of the ways i predict this comic to end (some of my other predictions are happier)
vixeL August 18, 2012, 10:29 AM EST.
Now see Mike, even Sandy knows Lucy better than you.
