****! I need to step up my game….
Also, I can’t tell if she somehow knows more than we do about this or she’s just assuming she’s not going to like it. Still though, her face is so apathetic it’s kind of creepy. It’s like her emotions kind of died and all she can feel is neutrality.
One more thing, if this is what I think it is, she logically won’t have a choice and I think she knows it. I don’t think they’ll be sending her away because, for all they know, her friends are there to comfort her. Therapy seems like the most logical situation as it would keep her around so her family and friends could help her along with a trained professional.
I wonder how they’ll react if they manage to get the real situation out of her…. Won’t be fun.
And lastly, sideburns! Why do women have sideburns? Freaks me out.
@Bjk
I find that most swears can invoke more meaning in one word then most others can in a sentence.

could her family be moving?

her mom said something about “abandoning” in the last page I don’t really know how she could feel abandoned. unless they were moving, her mom was going to have anither baby, or if her mom was going to re-marry (I’ve never seen her father in the comic so I don’t know if he’s around or not)

That’s a very good question, but if this an intervention then the answer is probably no. Sorry.

I like the intensity of her blue eyes she is great at hiding her emotions with those beautiful blue eyes.

This also explains why her family is so worried that look make me worry about her. Just imagine how they feel after hearing her cry which i’m sure they have.

@Frodomann1: While you’re free to interpret it that way, I’d suggest comparing her eyes to her family’s on the previous pages. The light has literally and metaphorically gone out of Lucy’s eyes.

This is very short but so much can be said about it.

Its like after all this emotional pain and suffering it has basically drained the life and any emotions from her. I am guessing that they are going to do something big for her OR maybe she thinks they are talking about her and she doesn’t want the to make a big fuss or big deal about her. Maybe she just honestly wants to be left alone to suffer by herself and not drag anyone down with her. The fact that only Sam is surprised is scaring me.

The abandonment statement makes me think… If this before New Years/Christmas maybe they are going to Christmas/New Years party with Mike’s(and others) family(s) and they have decided that she shouldn’t go since she is feeling depressed, and would rather be left alone.

Maybe she has realized or thinks Mike doesn’t care about her and she that shouldn’t care about him or anyone for that matter.

I do like how this is unfolding and keeping on the edge of our sits.

I love how Taeshi uses the highlights in this page. How Lucy’s mom, and her two brothers have whites to show they’re full of life and yet when Lucy comes down, her eyes are just color, no white anywhere. Just a dull color.

Nice work with Lucy’s eyes. Especially playing into the anime-trick using “no highlights in the eyes” to showcase a kind of hypnosis state… It basically shows that Lucy has put herself into a zen-like apathy with how things happen in her life from here on out.

That look she has, the neutral eyebrows and that heavy-lidded look on her eyes themselves. The emptiness in her eyes. I’ve shared that look many times so I know how it feels to be like her with that apathetic, hopeless, “I don’t care about anything anymore” look. I’m going to state the obvious and say she’s a sad little kitty who’s bottling up her feelings. Some people would say she needs to talk about what she’s feeling, but for some reason I just keep wishing for my life that it’s NOT therapy they’re talking about sending her to. For the love of the gods please not therapy, that would just open her eyes further to the sheer amount of abuse she’s put Mike through and she’d feel even worse about it. Keep in mind this is just my opinion on the subject, and if anyone can respond to me on why not going to therapy would be a bad thing, I’d love to read a thoughtful and intelligent response.

The only thing I can think of that would show how truly depressed she was would be if she stopped wearing her ribbon and/or gave it to someone she cared about deeply, such as Paulo. THAT would be an intense warning sign.

A new year ushering in a new Lucy? Guess we’ll see. Even if she isn’t over it, it’s unlikely that she would willingly accept professional consultation. She is good at putting on a front, so I’d put my money on her making a case for herself being okay and for her family to chill out.

She has spent all this time isolating herself and sulking, you’d think she has at least thought about the idea of moving on from Mike. She may be an emotional train wreck and obsessive, but she certainly does not lack in willpower or intelligence. She can take care of herself and I’m sure she will convince her family to trust in her ability to pull through this on her own.

I look forward to seeing a revitalized Lucy in the near future.

Damn, I swore it was Batman. All the signs indicated it was him.
Yeah, but anyways, I really like Lucy’s eyes. They’re very lovely, most likely because there was once a stretch in my life where I got used to seeing eyes like that in the mirror all the time; the eternal look of why, what, when, where, and does it matter.
Just something about them; they’re very frosty and very beautiful. Very open, yet very guarded at the same time. Very colorful, but just as barren. Dunno, maybe I’m just a nut.
The fight within begins, but the question still remains as to what she’s going to get out of it. I want to see her get stronger, for those of us who have fallen down as far as she has, and to climb back to what’s real. It’s tough and it’s frustrating as all Hell, especially when you feel like you’re doing it without support, but you have to toughen up and keep climbing. If no one is going to fight for you, then you have to bare your teeth and fight for yourself without surrender, until you find that reason that brings you security.
Panel 4 is amazing, by the way; really speaks to me. The tilt of her head, the position of her ears, the position of her brows, and that gaze. Very attentive, intuitive, calming, and unnatural.

Perhaps she has come to terms that this suffering and pain is well… deserved. To watch the one person who you thought would always be there for you and was your best friend, basically tell you he despises your very being and that you are the soul reason for his misery and unhappiness. Ouch how do you handle that? To be honest I don’t think anyone can break through her depression and pull her out of it. The only person who may stand a chance probably isn’t in the mood to do so or could possibly make matters worst.

Either way I hope someone can reach her. She really needs it.

After a year of watching this situation stagnate I’ve moved from the “Aw poor Lucy!” circle to the “Get over your melodrama” camp. Mike and Lucy aren’t friends anymore. We get it. It sucked the way it burned down so violently in the end, but it’s time we advanced the story-line to something other than “Lucy is sad”. If any of her friends knew she was hurting like this, they would offer their immediate support. Paulo reached out to her, and she barely made small talk with him. Augustus was more blunt, but offered helpful advice nonetheless. All this to no effect. Lucy became a recluse. She’s abandoned her friends and refused their help. Apparently, Mike was the only one who mattered to her. What a shame.

This story could have been much more interesting if it were allowed to develop. We could be seeing infighting in the group as they try to pick sides between friends they both care about. Hypothetically, Daisy will suddenly decide she hates Lucy if only to keep Mike which will make Abbey all sorts of conflicted. We could see Paulo actually getting into a fight with Mike over what he did to Lucy. This could cause Jasmine to get jealous over Paulo being so passionate about another girl. Or maybe some less obvious developments would occur. Who knows how some characters would react to the prospect of the group disbanding?

Or, perhaps we could go with the more realistic scenario where Lucy goes through some major character changes and becomes an Ice Queen. She gets better, but loses all the dere in her tsundere. No passive aggression, just outright misanthropy. If her best friend abandons her, then screw needing friends. It’s better to be feared than loved, right?

Instead we just keep the status quo of “Lucy is sad”. I was certainly expecting some interesting plot developments since last December, but nothing memorable has happened. It’s all starting to feel overplayed and fabricated. It’s hard to sympathize or identify with a story that has no flow. There’s no arc here. No rising action for this to get even more dramatic, and it’s not falling to a resolution. They story arc has effectively flat-lined for a whole year. So forgive me if I’m not overcome with manly tears over how “empty” Lucy’s eyes look on this page. It’s a detail that’s inconsequential to the plot, just like every other detail we’ve seen this year. Here’s to hoping this comic gets a defibrillator next year, because it sure isn’t going anywhere. :/

It’s strange how she can actually act pretty cool in some situations but basically fall apart at the seams when Mike is involved. You’d think she’d somehow realize her capacity for level-headed thinking and maybe try and draw a little bit of that through when it comes to all the…. drama.

Then again she may just still be a bit numb, at this point, after everything that’s happened.

Is it just me or is she more straight-faced than ever…? I get the feeling that she knows what they’re talking about, but we (the readers) only have her mother’s statement (possibly about leaving) as a hint to what they’re talking about! Aw man! Now the suspence is killing me!

Oh yeah, and chances are—with the condition she’s in—I have the pre-concieved notion that this isn’t going to end well…

@Solvek
Paulo is the only one who has even tried to make contact with Lucy at this point i think and he got chased out of the house by her brother, and the whole Augustus thing was before the epic **** fest of Mike out right saying he hated Lucy.
But you also have to take into account that in terms of the story its only been about a week (rather than the 3 or 4 months real time with filler comics), so its possible that many people don’t really know the true extent of what has happened yet, come to think of it i don’t think they do other than Lucy’s immediate family. And of course the status quo has been maintained, we just got back to the main story.
I do agree that what you propose would be interesting, but what i am trying to say is that you haven’t given it any time to develop, for all we know that is exactly what will happen.
I think it will. Once word gets out about what Mike did i think there will be hell to pay on his part given the groups reaction last time when Lucy said she loved him and he kinda stomped on her heart. They ripped him a new ******* for being one.
So, to summarize if you don’t want to read that whole mess i just wrote…
1. In BCB Universe time its only been a week since utter MikexLucy meltdown.
2. The last year has been filler, so nothing happened with the current Arc till now.
3. Interesting ideas you have, maybe they will happen.
4. Give the current Arc more time before making an *** of yourself.

@LightTribe: I believe that therapy would be good for her because therapists let you go at your own pace and if you don’t want to talk about it or it seems like a subject that will hurt you more, the therapist will probably leave those until a time in which the therapist feels you can handle it. Their job is to help you, not make you feel worse when you have a condition that can make you suicidal.

Plus, around 90% of people who get treatment that is a mix of therapy and medication recover from their depression however, around 80% of people who have depression don’t get treated and continue suffering which is why it remains a major problem in the world. There is always the chance that Lucy can beat it herself but considering how damaged she is at the moment, I don’t think she has the inner strength required for that.

So I honestly believe a therapist is what she needs. It will help her beat her depression and it could potentially help her deal with her other problems.

people talk about how there’s no development when there’s no sign on when this comic will end? Developments will come surly but not all at once, we need cliffhangers,time,spaces, and gaps to complete this awesome story. i much rather wait for this story to get going, i love the fillers, and i love how its done.

If your really a fan you should agree with me. you really have no say, bitching about it wont change her mind or make her do it your way. its not your story or comic. just shut up and let them do there comic the right way.

if you want a straight to the point story, i suggest children’s books.

and i guess she wants to talk to them and reason with them.
Cause their sending her away. She isolated her self in her room for god knows how long and she wouldn’t tell her family anything, they don’t know what her problem is they don’t know whats wrong with her. And she comes out now to ‘talk to them’. After she had all other proprieties to talk with them, she chooses now.

To me, i think this is a good thing, Lucy needs the help and her family is trying to do whats best for her.

I’ve been there before.
And you know what, it depends. It never hurt me at all to not be close to others, yes, it did hurt my social status, but school is exactly what got me into that state.
It also depends if she really needs a therapist or not. On the same day that I completely lost myself, I shook my head and said ‘**** it. Who cares?’ And just moved on. If I had a therapist I’d probably be weaker than I am now.

Some people do, some people don’t. I’m putting my bets on the fact that she just needs someone her age to give her their time, care and love, or at least a childish adult. Someone young enough for her to kick around, someone that will always come back but lets her know what she’s doing wrong.

Besides I think it’s pretty obvious she was molested in kindergarden, and if she wasn’t we at least know that it wasn’t the most recent rape attempt, which will probably come up in her session.

Please don’t take me wrong, getting a neutral personality due for constant suffering in a point to not care anymore is unhealthy but least she is not whining anymore. Seeing her constantly depressed for her repetitive melodrama over her obsession was tiring.
Somehow I relate her with Augustus. His impartial behavior may reflect a similar past with nothing but lies, betrayal and abandonment just like her. Just by their eyes. They look the same now.

I have reread the last few chapters and checked thoroughly… The glint of light in Lucys eyes vanished after the argument with Mike in December. Even when the chapter was finishing, she didn’t have it. In my opinion that really broke her. All the words, such specific words to her that hit straight through the heart and mind. I agree with most that she has lost some of her energy, emotions, etc. It’s a serious hit that she won’t be able to get back from.

If some of you don’t remember, the issue with Mike and “what he done” was mentioned during the party where Tess got drunk. It wasn’t said to what direction it went, but apparently the discussion was started. Maybe we will see someone acting properly… Or maybe Taeishi is right and Paolo will save the day 8-D

lol calm down, let people comment on what they want to comment. Also, with you and your friend, it probably wasn’t like you fell in love with her early on and it’s just been getting stronger. She actually felt that and it hurt to be shot down like that. He didn’t just stop talking to her, he told her that she wasn’t worth anything. That would sting a hell of a lot comming from the person who knew you more than anyone else. Also, this IS a teenage comedic(not sure where it is right now though) drama, so of course its melodramatic. Don’t take your frustration out on other commentators(not sure if this is the right word, being japanese, my english is bad). Just calm down, skip the comments you don’t want to read and move on. If you want to make a point, do it in a more civil manner. Also, people like to comment here because the characters seem life-like, meaning they react like normal people do if they had that life. Another thing is that I forgot to ask why is it that her friends don’t really seem to notice/care much that she’s not around as much or that she’s feeling so down. Were they all really that busy or did I miss something? I love how the art style is improving Taeshi and I look forward to seeing it improve more :3
On a side-note I was still hoping to get an answer if I could write a fan fiction for your webcomic here and of course i would give proper credit. Thanks :3

Firstly I love that 4 panel!

Seriously that girl needs a HUG NOW! Therapy? Really? Ok I went through therapy it was helpful, but when your whole life come crashing and crumples to pieces… OUCH!
This pain and suffering has been building up ever since she told that she loved him. After that point he wouldn’t put up with her crap so she stopped and hoped that it would work… even when it seemed to fail she still continued. Remember ever since she told him he has avoided basically pretended she didn’t exist ESPECIALLY ON HER BIRTHDAY! And now in December they are talking, playing video games, and drinking soda! HOORAY! Lucy thinks they can be friends again… 3-4 months of your best friend and lover ignoring you and you have lost all hope then you both are enjoying eachother’s company, only to be told you and you alone are the soul reason his life isn’t perfect. Therapy can do somethings but it has its limits.

About how their friends would react to this. To be honest I don’t Lucy would bring it up, I really think she would just hide for the sake of Mike. She would probably just sit somewhere so Mike could continue to sit with “his friends” and Lucy would just say something she “needs her space” or some bull crap to get them off Mike’s case. Then maybe just maybe he might see she really does care him.

Her poses seem so stiff, and her expression seems so void of anything. She looks like a robotic maid or something, only coming in if she’s needed, or if there’s something involving her. She doesn’t look like she wants to be there, but at least she’s coming down for a breath of fresh air. Sam probably hasn’t seen her face since the whole thing with Mike happened, (Maybe he’s been busy with his own life?) and so he probably isn’t used to seeing his little sister with so much…nothing in her expression. Her mother and other brother(I can’t quite remember his name) have probably been around more often, and are more used to her expression and energy being void.

Lucy’s one broken kitty, and she really needs a friend. Not a therapist, not Mike, not military school, just a friend that she can be this way around until she can be not so empty. Being by herself is only going to hurt her more and get her stuck in this way of being. Military school is only going to make her think that even her family doesn’t want her and that Mike’s even more right. Therapy is going to have her shut into herself because why would she even believe he has the competence to handle her, when even her best and closest friend gave up on her?

People will probably notice her emptiness come the play, and possibly it’ll be powerful enough to show Mike how his words really effected her. Once Paulo sees her condition, he’ll try and spend as much time with her as possible, and this will possibly cause a rift between Jasmine and Paulo. Daisy might be a neutral party, going to either Mike or Lucy when she thinks they need/want her around, and Abby will take her side, especially so if he ever catches wind of Mike’s treatment on Lucy.

The others are neutral parties, and they could go either way depending on the events that are to come. These are all guesses though.

There is something I want to point out Our time: 1 Year BCB time: 1 month.

@Solvek: We have seen the story progress this past year. Did you forget about the Abbey’s dark history chapter at the beginning of the year(Ch 69: At Loose Ends)? How about Paulo’s sweet attempt at cheering Lucy up(Ch 70: Piece of Cake)? What about Beauty and the Beast meeting up(Ch 71: Just Beautiful)? This one is an easy one: what happens when you lose your cellphone(Ch 72: Buddy System)? Each one of these chapters shows the development of a character or a possible story plot. All you have to do now is wait.

@Someone: Therapy doesn’t always work but it can be a big step in the right direction as long as there is some cooperation. Lucy could be forced to go to therapy and easily keep her mouth shut or she could talk it out with a therapist and she could move on with her life. Hopefully if Lucy does talk to anyone she could realize that all of this(the break-up, mike hating her, etc.) wasn’t completely her fault and that she needs to at least stand up for her feelings.

What Mike did in December wasn’t right but the same goes for Lucy trying to keep what Mike did a secret. I know you’re worried about what Sam might do to him but don’t you think it would be better to at least tell your mom how you feel or that you had your heart torn apart?

I think the argument “it’s Mike’s fault” is overplayed. Yes, it is his fault for lashing out violently on such an emotional person. But also, it is her fault for chaining him for so long onto her emotions and thinking it was okay to do that. I KNOW being true to oneself is really difficult but the whooooole story has revolved around that (hence the title being BittersweetCandy Bowl) but right now, Lucy needs to grow the heck up a little. Like she said, she was going to lose Mike yet refused to prepare herself to it. This had to come down, sooner or later.
And @PurpleHaze, even if she could keep a friend around, she’s come to this! She’s kept Mike around for years and only recently could truly open up to him. How long would it take for her to take another step, considering all her friends are all caught up in this and she knows any of them could just go and snap at Mike? That’s not what she wants, something like that could make things worse, even. My opinion, is that she needs, right now, someone who’s outside of all this and teach her how to help herself up.

I can’t imagine how much scarier this would be if she was depressed this deeply for a real-time entire year, rather than the approximate single month the comic covered while showing the past/present development and activities of multiple characters. It’d be hard to see her stuck in an emotionless wreck for the entire rest of the series (unless of course there’s a reform in her personality, as people were already suggesting. The story could easily change direction soon, for better or worse).

@past male abuse victim

I know it sucks if you are good friends with a girl and she doesn’t like you, but I feel like guys who claim to be hurting from the friend-zone are not very nice themselves.

Girls are not vending machines where you pop in friendship coins until sex comes out.

Seriously, friends don’t owe friends anything other than respect. And if one does have feelings, that’s something you either bring up or don’t. But that’s your choice. No one forces you to deal with a friend you don’t like. You either man up and tell them to cut the crap and deal with the fallout or you stop hanging out with them and realize they won’t know what happened.

Mike has no excuse. She wasn’t even doing anything wrong. He called her a parasite and randomly said he hated her. Lucy is socially awkward, and she doesn’t fit in. So she shields herself with harsh words and sass. She isn’t trying to purposefully be a bitch or use her looks to get away with things. I re-read the comic awhile ago and she really didn’t beat on her friends unless they surprised her. She really isn’t that bad. So what she says idiot to people alot? I don’t think anyone cares because they got used to it, and they certainly didn’t tell her about it, so none of that really did much either.

While Mike is the cause of most of her deepest hurt, he did have at times, poorly thought-out reason for most of it. Hopefully, closure and healing will come as he decides he was wrong for being so harsh instead of considering maybe she was already sorry and regretted hurting him in the past. Who knows? :x

For some odd reason based on context clues and based on how they are… I wonder if they plan on sending Lucy somewhere for the time being in hopes she will get better. Possibly a doctor? Or maybe since her father isn’t shown at home, maybe they’re sending her to her father’s house in order for her to feel better, thus “abandoning her.”

@Cynthia I can understand Lucy not wanting people to bother Mike over this. But to keep the fight a secret, both parties need to stay silent. And should Mike? Especially once Lucy’s state becomes known, and the usual go-to guy for Lucy problems suddenly can’t help her. That’s bound to raise some red flags and subsequent questions. Should Mike stay silent in the face of others’ concerns? Not to mention Lucy herself is in a really dangerous place, mentally and emotionally. Should Mike’s hatred of Lucy outstrip her basic safety?

I admit to being a new fan, and having only read from December onwards (haven’t had time for an archive binge) I don’t have an idea for the full picture. Maybe Mike is fully within his rights to not give a **** about Lucy, I don’t know. But he should at least be willing to stand by his words.

It would be incredibly telling for him not to.

You hit it right on the head. Mike didn’t say anything, the only reason she stop being a bitch to Mike is because of what Zach said. I still strongly believe if Mike told Lucy he didn’t like her “abuse” she probably would have stopped. As far as we know she may think he actually liked being “abused”.

To be honest I really can’t wait to find out how Mike and Lucy will interact when they see eachother again.

Which still brings to the question: Why deal with someone who is bitch and abusive, then when they actually start being nice you start being a compete *******?
Please I REALLY want to know the logic behind that.

@I_Love_Lucy

There are three kinds of friend zones.

The first is where a guy expects that because he is someone’s friend, that he should have a chance to date her. This is bad and illogical, and rather sleazy.

The second kind is where the girl says this, but the guy knows it is a lie - in other words, he knows that she doesn’t want to date him, but she refuses to actually articulate the reason why. The reason why this is bad is because it is dishonest - “I don’t like you like that” is fine, “I don’t want to ruin our friendship” is nonsense, and everyone knows it. Someone who says “I don’t want to ruin our friendship” -always- has another (real) reason why, but they’re just putting the guy off by saying it. It upsets the guy not because he has been rejected, but because the rejection seems arbitrary or dishonest. This isn’t to say that the girl SHOULD date him, just that she should be honest if they are really her friend.

However, in this case, it is a third type. This is where the girl sends mixed signals to the guy. And this drives people -crazy-. She turns him down, then flirts with him, has KISSED HIM, and obviously likes him, but also keeps pushing him away. The guy has no idea what he’s supposed to do - is she being honest with her words, or her actions? Is she just being coy or playing hard to get? And you know what they say about actions speaking louder than words.

Now, Mike is obviously reacting badly to things. But he is in the very worst kind of friend zone, where the girl can’t make up her mind, which means he can’t either move on and get over with it or resolve it by actually dating her - he keeps getting drug back in by the fact that he DOES in fact like her, and what he liked about her hasn’t changed, and she gives him periodic encouragement.

Mike overreacted because Sandy told him he was being abused, when in reality he wasn’t being used - Lucy just has trouble articulating her feelings properly, and I suspect to some degree it ties back into her having trouble being “girly” (even though being in a relationship doesn’t make you girly necessarily). This is his way of rationalizing things to himself, rather than actually accepting that Lucy really just can’t make up her mind. Except she finally DID, and he rejected her - and then acted really nasty towards her because she was a constant temptation to him. He felt really terrible about Lucy immediately afterwards, and he still hasn’t dealt with it fully because he still overreacts whenever he has to deal with her.

@Someone: Your question has already been answered by Taeshi http://askbcb.tumblr.com/post/34898907698 Mike tells us his thoughts about Lucy saying I love you and then promptly going to Paulo’s bedroom :/. Mikey was not pleased about Lucy clinging to Paulo when everyone thought he was dead back in Acapulco. Mike is seeing everything completely one-sided and isn’t even thinking about how Lucy felt. I see glimpses of regret about what he did but his jealousy is turning what should be compassion into hate.

Also, by the time Lucy started being nicer Mike had already decided to go with the one who has been nice to him from the beginning. Do I even have to say her name at this point?

Since most of the people here are predicting her family’s gonna send her to a psychiatrist or counselor, I wonder if the person she’ll be seeing is the same one Abbey is seeing for his anger-management?

Then at some point, the 2 just so happen to run into each other, Abbey gets confused, and starts to have suspicions on Mike like Paulo did during Tess’ Christmas party.

I don’t know, I may be thinking too far ahead here.

What I’m trying to say, this boils down on a persons mental state, specially in their teen years not all people are gonna be stable enough to take such stuff so easily. Congra-frickin-lations to you people who got over their problems fast, so have a damn cookie.

Now, as the story arc is going, I am wonderring how this is gonna turn out. With Lucy becoming this emotionally distant. There are quite interesting possibilities for various stories of how the cast reacts to this, maybe Mike actually FINALLY realising the damage he has caused (wishfull thinking?).

To all the people boasting about how they got over their crushes and problems better than Lucy did:
That’s fantastic! *golfclap* You handled something better than a cartoon.

Oh wait..that isn’t something you should pride yourself on, because that’s ridiculous. Let me paint you a picture of true strength.

I know a woman, who was abused by the family she was born into. Eventually, she was sent to a foster home, where she was abused again. She was afraid to make friends all throughout her life, she didn’t do well in school, and she certainly didn’t pursue a college education. She has led a very lonely, haunted life. In spite of all this (and it took her a while) she eventually managed to pull herself up out of the darkness and step into the light. She moved on from her past and is trying to make something of her life now. THAT takes strength.

But, I understand, not everyone has her life, and you obviously need to take whatever victories you can get. So good for you. You’re stronger than a cartoon. We’re all proud of you.

It’s worth mentioning that even though some people would defend Lucy, she HAS abused Mike. If not physically (beating on him quite regularly), then verbally/emotionally (calling him a jerk/idiot, yelling at him when she thought he was dead, etc.). There’s only so much one can take, especially when one is a teenager with raging hormones and, often, lacking the maturity to handle stressful situations well. We see this in both Mike and Lucy - Mike flipping out and screaming, and Lucy becoming a recluse and withdrawing from…well, everyone.

Hell, even adults lose it sometimes. Again, there’s only so much stress one can handle. Mike just reached his limit. On the whole, if Lucy learns nothing from this and goes right back to the way she was (not entirely impossible, but unlikely), he’ll probably be better off.

One can - and often will - lose friends one had in middle school during the high school years. It sucks, but…life has to go on. Even if the friendship lasted up til then, it can dissolve under new stresses. Lucy has to learn that, and learn how to cope without her “security blanket”. Mike’s not her only friend, even if he was the one who meant the most to her. Sue, for example, will be an excellent source of support, as she was when Mike rejected Lucy.

Lucy’s life can’t grind to a halt just because of this - and judging from these last few pages, I think her family realizes that.

@supertails19

I think Mike is an awful *****. Rejecting someone he likes, regardless that he has Sandy, and then whining like a baby when she trys to find someone to help her pick up the pieces. That’s rude on his part, not on Lucy. She just thought it might make a difference. He wasn’t engaged, and it’s a highschool bf/gf thing, which I hate to break it to anyone but high school relationships don’t always last especially if they started in middle school. She wasn’t home-wrecking, she just handled the situation, she said something and then tried to move past it after she got rejected. She was somewhat mature about it. I don’t feel sorry for Mike. He is selfish and wants to have his cake and eat it to. He doesn’t want Lucy to get over him, and he doesn’t want to leave Sandy.

I’ve known people like this. They aren’t nice. Maybe deep DEEP down they care, but they are pretty nasty on the outside and inside.

I think the only problem I’ve had with the comic up to this point is the character of Mike. For some reason we are told he is the nice guy. We are TOLD by the characters and cast that he is a nice person. We are pretty much told to like him. Yet just about everything he has ever done to his friends makes him look like an *******.

The way he handled Daisy, the way he handled Lucy, hell his random jealousy of Paulo for wanting to take care of Lucy. Mike saved Lucy once. I’ll give him that, but she tried to save him before, twice, regardless of her safety. Once in the river and the other time with the thugs in the alley. BOTH times these situations started because Mike is an idiot, got drunk or got some hormone induced reason to jump into a river on a bet/race with Paulo. Judging by the way he acted afterwards I really felt like he did it as a favor out of guilt. He got ****** with himself later because he realized he put his life on the line for Lucy. And that made him “wahhhhhhh unhappy” because he has a girlfriend.

The biggest irony of the comic is Mike isn’t the nice guy. His actions and treatment of the other characters shows that. All Lucy has ever done is stick up for her friends and try to find her place in the awkward realm of high school. She is ironically the character in the comic that has been label as harsh or “mean” and her actions show the opposite. She is the nice girl, despite her stupid label in high school.

If your name wasn’t something like that, I think people would actually you. Quite Silly that your name determines whether people should listen to you or not :/ You have some very very good points.

@Steely
Who is abusing who? We have seen in “Pillow Talk”s flashback(in the snow) and in the “Starting Over” as well as other places that Mike has being using Lucy as his replacement for Sandy, and now that he has his phone and can talk to Sandy he doesn’t need his replacement blankety. It isn’t when she goes to Paulo for comfort that when Mike becomes the ******* we know him as its when he gets that stupid phone and can talk to Sandy! He doesn’t care about anyone but him and his Sandy! Pretending someone is someone else, that isn’t abuse? Having someone believe you are their friend for 7+ years when it isn’t true, that isn’t abuse? Ripping out someone’s heart when you mean the world to them and all they do is love you, that isn’t abuse? Taking away all of someone’s friends, that isn’t abuse?
Lucy may have hit him from time to time and called him names. Hell my best friend and I hit eachother, also call eachother names far worst than jerkface and idiot. Its like Mike is driving a semi-truck, we all know they have BIG blind spots. Well Sandy is his blind spot to the rest of the world.

Him balling his eyes out and going to Lucy for comfort. Because Sandy left? That’s ok? Yet when Lucy believes Mike hates she goes to Paulo, because he actually cares about someone other than himself, and Mike throws a fit! Everyone saying Lucy needs to grow up. LOOK AT MIKE!

Ok let’s look at this from a different point then. Maybe Mike is in this love triangle where he loves Sandy and Lucy, so since Sandy was Ms. perfect and gave him fish he chooses her. But he still loves Lucy, and she unknowingly is tempting him. So when it boils down to it he actually enjoys Lucy’s company(“December” right before the “fight”) … but he wants Sandy! Now he is confused and probably angry because he wants Sandy but he does actually loves Lucy. So to insure that he gets the one he “wants” he must destroy the other. Damn I am starting to have pity for poor Mike… But avoiding and making her miserable on her Birthday… somethings can’t be forgotten or forgiven.

So far as Mike, you seem to see exactly what I do. I just can’t feel sorry for the guy that doesn’t give me any reason to like him (other than the characters think he’s AMAZING, for some reason).

He has a great life. Normal caring family, People look up to him (for some reason), he is supposedly attractive by BSCB standards, girls flock to him (for some reason), and he has the girl of his dreams (Sandy) but he still wants to tear down/ keep around poor Lucy so he has his own emotional cushion to save him in case Sandy dumps him.

Mike is basically a male cat version of Bella Swan.

I hated Bella Swan and everything she stood for too. Only difference is I generally enjoy this comic and I hated Twilight with a passion.

lucys legs on the last panel are strange, at least somewhat.

@Joe
I think part of the railing on the stairs is overlapping one of her legs, it looks like what appears to be a gap is actually a line left there to distinguish depth or light, like the “empty” outlines around the rest of the family.

I know that there’s been a lot of comment on this already, but:

EYES. YES. ermgjahfglarrrgh.

Also, this is the first time since before the previous chapter that I’ve actually been remotely interested in what’s going on, so that’s always nice. No offense intended.

**On a sidenote, I would not be at all disappointed if Tai started doing eyes the way Joss Whedon does feet. Yes, I realise how weird that sounds.

@Someone: http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c43/p29.html Mike didn’t want to keep his relationship with Sandy a secret anymore, but Lucy is not helping by using little Yashy as leverage. Right here Mike and Lucy’s relationship was shown to be nothing more than an act to keep up appearances, looks like Zachary saw through this act(probably because he was there, the rest of the group doesn’t have a clue). Zach seems to have a knack for being in the wrong place at the right time (beach, bathroom, bridge, right when Mike needed to be found, and before Lucy left). Mike wasn’t mean enough to break a little girl’s heart not during summer vacation. He changed his mind by winter break when he broke Lucy’s heart though. Maybe he broke more than just her heart, we’ll find out about Lucy’s condition soon enough.

Well Mike did want to to sever ties with Lucy, what better way than using what you know (cold harsh words from a person you care about). Instead of calling her a jerk or an idiot Mike decided to use his vocabulary and found words that made her sick to her stomach (now I remember why I don’t talk to anybody when I’m angry, stupid words slip out easily when angry or when you want to be left alone -_-). It was dumb, it was wrong, and he needs to apologize for it. Of course he is not going to because when you’re angry the last thing you want to do is say sorry even if it will save you a lot of grief in the long run. I like how you make me think critically about this comic:).

Don’t hurt me for this but I don’t think Mike is completely heartless. Like I mentioned in my previous post, Mike has shown signs of regret he just has too much rage in him right now to say something like “I’m sorry that I said all those hurtful things to you Lucy back in December… I was a jerk and you deserve better, but can’t you at least admit that you have hurt me in the past?” :unsure: Mike could do better than this but first he needs to cool down before he apologizes. Unfortunately for Mike his time is running out, how ironic since he normally does the running. If enough people find out about this secret the consequences will be overwhelming. I don’t want Mike to die, I just want him to learn that the way he handled the break-up was too far. He is digging a hole he won’t be able to get out of.

@I_Love_Lucy: If you expect me to believe that Lucy never did anything to hurt Mike’s feeling you’ll have to try harder http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c44/p4.html 5 pages that is all it took to find this XD(Hmm, I would have gone with challenge accepted, but playful choking your friend is fine too :/). Also, if you ever have to choose between someone that sends you mixed messages and is aggressive or someone who you think is an angel and loves you unconditionally let me know who you pick and why. I would love to hear about your reason why. :>. Also, Mike has admitted to Sandy that he wishes Lucy was dead (Just Beautiful)… he needs to pay for that even if it was a joke. Mike won’t have his safety cushion anymore so if he gets lonely, tough luck. When everybody finds out about what he has done he’ll be liked about as much as the school likes Tess. Last time I checked not a lot of people like her <.< it took some time but people are warming up to her.

@supertails19

She actually looks like she is just grabbing both sides of his scarf there, but I digress.

I didn’t say she hadn’t ever, but Lucy and Mike never set boundaries for their friendship. She had been acting that way since they were children. She assumed this was normal behavior. He could of set her straight. All it would need is a hey, “Tone down the violence I don’t like it anymore.” Lucy would have been embarrassed and stopped for good.

Instead he goes for “I HATE YOU I ALWAYS HAVE YOUR ARE A PARASITE!!!! EVERYONE HATES YOU AND THEY WILL ALL SIDE WITH ME AND IGNORE YOU AND YOU HAVE NO FRIENDS!!!!!!11111 AND YOU ARE A LOWLY WOMAN FOR FINDING COMFORT WITH SOMEONE OTHER THAN ME!”
:/

Pretty obvious who’s in the wrong here.

As for the Sandy Mike thing, I have a massive theory on that:

Sandy is not a real person in Mike’s eyes. I guarantee she is not the same little girl he knew in kindergarten. And I am not so sure they would be a great couple if she were actually there with him most the time. He puts her on a pedastool and unknowingly objectifies her. Guys who do that will end up seeing their little Angel as tarnished when they realize they are human. The only reason why this hasn’t happened to them yet is because she isn’t there to tarnish his image. He can imagine her as perfect as he wants, and she isn’t there to taint his reality with any of her imperfections. And we all know everyone in BSCB has them, and if for some reason Tashi makes Sandy actually perfect then she will be doing a terrible job in story telling because she will have made a Mary Sue.

Other thoughts:

I don’t think starting out as a long distance is healthy. Mostly because you can’t gauge your feelings for someone with a phone-call or email if you haven’t talked to them since you were 5. Seriously when the comic took that turn I thought it was the weirdest unnatural thing ever.

I also don’t think it’s healthy to date in middle school, or even in some cases high school. People are still finding themselves, and they will cling onto anything familiar. It’s just not good for healthy developing. That’s why people have such problems when they bring their high school boo to College. They change, sometimes this makes them incompatible. You really have to branch out before you discover yourself. The two of them are holding onto a memory of yesteryear. Tell me how that isn’t unhealthy.

I don’t think Sandy really knows him that well either. Otherwise she would not be okay with his friendship with Lucy if she were to see it in action. Less because of abuse and more because Mike makes it obvious that he remains somewhat conflicted with his feelings for Lucy. As his girlfriend I don’t think she’d be okay with it. I know I wouldn’t.

@Someone
You make fair points. It’s not a good situation, any way you look at it. The relationship is toxic to both of them.

I never said I thought Lucy alone had to grow up. I think they BOTH have a lot of maturing to do - which is understandable. Again, they’re teenagers. That was the point I was trying to make. Their hormones are raging, they’re not emotionally mature, and the Sandy-Mike-Lucy situation is putting stress on both of them.

Lucy needs to learn Mike won’t always be there, and Mike needs to realize that exploding was the wrong course of action to take. I’m not trying to say that either side is at fault - really, it could have been handled better on both sides.

Lucy did nothing to prepare herself for this - despite having been warned that it was coming. As for Mike…there are better ways to break it to someone that you don’t want them in your life anymore. I will concede it’s never an easy thing to do…but again, my point was they don’t yet have the emotional maturity to deal with this situation in a way that doesn’t involve the backlash that we’re seeing now.

As it stands, right now, they’d both be better off apart if nothing changes.

Lucy is going through a trial period that reminds me of a similar trial I went through. I know for me personally I needed my friends to help me pull through, so I’m fairly sure her friends will find out in some way and help her out. It would be a case of “famous last words” if everyone supported Lucy instead of Mike.

I have this feeling that Lucy is not “OMG I’m so sad and… ummm death!” anymore… I think Lucy just made a choice. I kind of have this feeling that her mom is going to move for work or something because she is all like “She will feel I abandoned her” and Lucy instead of staying whit the rest decides to go whit her mom. Probably to where Sandy is, then Sandy will suddenly become her friend whit out knowing then she finds out and drama ensues…

BUT this is just me going out on a wild guess. Also I can’t stop thinking that just like Sandy pulled them apart she may be the one to get them to be friends again (Lucy and Mike). And if the *spoiler* guess made by everyone in a couple of pages of Paulo liking Lucy is true it could get even more dramatic as Lucy is leaving *spoiler*.

But I am probably wrong xD
