EvilKitty3 October 10, 2013, 1:05 PM EST.
Yeah Paulo, but there is a difference between not being able to understand something, and being a jerk to people who are trying.
This argument didn’t start because of Sue “pretending to be smart” - Paulo was behaving in a way that would get the whole group thrown out. If he wants to behave like that then fair enough but he’s been a pain in the *** all day.
so if you don’t want to try, that’s fair enough. But don’t distract other people who are trying.

Meanwhile, at the Artist Summit:
“I’ve done it! I’ve created a beautiful masterpiece of artistry!”
“… That’s just a black canvas.”
“I know, right? Isn’t it beautiful artistry?”
“That’s not art at all! Who would believe such stupidity?”
“Oh my god, what beautiful art! It’s too deep for anyone to even comprehend!”
Art is stupid. Back in black.

He admits that’s he’s immature and he doesn’t handle it well. We can forget that we are all flawed in some way and our flaws hurt others. Sometimes there’s nothing we can do about it. It’s part of the human condition.

Knux-the-Killer October 10, 2013, 1:16 PM EST.
Hmm, it looks like the lifeless void that one sees right before or after death. No one can understand it until they experience it and thus it simply can’t be explained. Kudos Paulo for giving Sue such a difficult work of art to interpret.
Sue, don’t feel bad about not knowing what to say about this work of art. The artist’s intention is probably too meaningful for us to understand… that or they really didn’t try with this one and somehow got lucky.
@Bluefox(below) : Unless Paulo ends up making Sue cry and run out of here in the next page… if that happens… well somebody will have some explaining to do to the others.
@void(below) : Just read what @Bluefox wrote right above you. What Sue said to Paulo on the bottom of this page http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c79/p19.html and what Paulo said to Sue on the current page seem to be the critical hits… maybe you could argue what David said to Sue as being one, but I think what Paulo just said to Sue is the major blow(critical hit).
supertails19 October 10, 2013, 1:16 PM EST.
major feels here. sue saying Paulo dose not even have the attention to stay focused on Lucy and Paulo saying that sue is just pretending to know what she is talking about. sue has ben all over Paulo about behaving him self in a museum of art. there are some expensive things in museums so she was just trying to help Paulo not get in trouble. but Paulo just thought she was being a bitch and was trying to be all in control. this was not a very good trip to the art museum for sue and Paulo but hopefully they will still be friends after this.
Blue fox October 10, 2013, 1:17 PM EST.
that was the critical hit
void October 10, 2013, 1:19 PM EST.
Hmm…you know what, forget there being any single ‘critical hit’. This chapter is more like a blazing inferno, with people getting burned left and right, for one reason or another.
Perhaps lending out metaphorical flamethrowers IS a bad idea…
Also, that painting. It both amazes and confuses me. I mean, it’s just…an empty blackness. But at the same time, it’s like that emptiness that David described the hole from earlier as. Kinda creepy…
Although it’s probably just pop art. I mean, really.
Oceanus92 October 10, 2013, 1:23 PM EST.
I do wish, Paulo would grow up a bit and try a little harder in life.
But I really enjoy how completley honest he usually is.

Furball October 10, 2013, 1:36 PM EST.
I don’t know if this is what Taeshi was going for but the “Black Square” is a very famous piece from Russian painter Kazimir Malevich.
SpiritWolf15x October 10, 2013, 1:37 PM EST.
I’ve seen stranger arts than that. I mean heck, during my visual arts class, our professor mentioned an art student who’s last minute art project was a urinal he stole out of a subway restroom. And an art critic even paid millions of dollars for it. I was just like “… seriously?”
Dudeler October 10, 2013, 1:37 PM EST.
Dude, it’s a blank canvas. It means whatever the hell you want it to mean.
I like how Sue puts some effort into trying to figure out what the artist might be trying to convey, but Paulo has a point.
Everyone deals with particular issues or pieces of art in their own way and not all things have a “right” or “wrong” answer, but what we make of it or argue for it.
That last comment by Paulo was a little hard too, since Sue does seem like the person that likes and wants to stay up to date on things, while Paulo is essentially deflating it or finding the “wizard behind the curtain”.
I am really curious why this sudden flare of anger broke out between the two and more importantly how it will develop in the story. This scenario reminds me of the relationship between Mike and Paulo.
Blank On Purpose October 10, 2013, 1:37 PM EST.
@How does that work? : Only when you do something about it. You can know you are immature and then change yourself to become a more mature person… or you can stay immature and not change a single thing. Paulo seems to choose the stay the same route… let’s see how well that works out for him.
supertails19 October 10, 2013, 1:37 PM EST.
It’s minimalist artwork.
Hawz October 10, 2013, 1:38 PM EST.
Man, this is why I love Paulo. Sue insulted him, he insulted her back, and she used Lucy to prove her point. I thought that Paulo was going to get physical for a moment but rather than hitting or even yelling at her, he turned away to leave the conversation. Sue knew what she said was a low blow so she apologized for it.
And Paulo accepted that apology. He moved on. He was hurt but I think that he recognized the amount of pride that she swallowed by saying that simple word. You can practically see him stopping to listen to her in the previous page. He didn’t retort and he took the apology on what it was, a “sorry” for a heated moment that they both didn’t need.
But Sue stated that he wasn’t trying shortly after. So Paulo, rather than tell, shows her what he means. That moment where he demands an explanation from her on what the painting means. I absolutely love it. He shows her that he doesn’t get. He shows her that what she’s feeling is what he’s been feeling all along (confusion, frustration, ect.). He doesn’t get it, and he admits it through his actions and emotions. Sue, on the other hand, tries to deny it. Sue tries to pretend to knows what the art means of the pieces and I’m guessing that this denial is what ticks Paulo off. They are in the same boat and Sue is trying to convince others that she’s on a cruise ship. They are equals and she’s trying to be taller than him.
Paulo may be immature, but this page at least tells another story. He lashes out his emotions, and he does it without pacifism and without any violence (which is a hard thing to do even in real life). He shows his frustration and his anger in a pure form and it doesn’t have to be watered down in order to refrain from causing a scene. The impact is as hard as it is effective on Sue, as he meant it to be, without doing anything more than “than tell me what that means. Show me you’re better than me.” He knows he’s immature in comparison to most of the cast, as stated, and he’s trying to be a better person. But it’s hard to take criticism from a hypocrite, and he makes no barriers in pointing it out.
I hesitated on the “critical hit” being in relation to the Lucy comment. I think that the real critical hit, and the “broaden your minds” comment was directing towards the impact on Sue’s pride and Paulo’s budding maturity.
I applaud you, Taeshi, for this chapter. It didn’t disappoint and it certainly has broaden, at least mine, mind.
Tylord October 10, 2013, 1:43 PM EST.
Dammit I have got to learn to make shorter comments.
Tylord October 10, 2013, 1:45 PM EST.
I think what’s really telling is just how HARD Sue’s trying to act like she understands it. She didn’t just walk over and look at it. Look at her posture. It’s almost as if she’s trying to act like an actual art critic. Acting like just staring at it from such a close distance and the answer will just leap out at her.
It's black canvas. October 10, 2013, 1:53 PM EST.
@Blank on Purpose: “I am really curious why this sudden flare of anger broke out between the two” -Blank on Purpose
I’m going to answer this for you. Paulo and David have been making Sue mad this entire day by acting immaturely as you can tell from them playing around with the art(David moreso then Paulo). Sue and the others left David and Paulo alone downstairs as they went up to enjoy the new exhibit. David pulled a fast one and surprised us by getting a ticket and joining the group instead of staying with Paulo. This would have been fine as long as David didn’t do any of his shenanigans(which he hasn’t)… and then Paulo came along and bumped into Sue. If that wasn’t enough of a reason to be annoyed, then this next part will explain why Sue was so mad.
Sue and the others came up here to enjoy the art in this new exhibit without any immaturity and then Paulo decides to go up there and pretty much trash talk the new exhibit… I think anyone would be annoyed by that fact alone and questioning Sue’s intelligence just added to her annoyance. In Paulo’s defense, he doesn’t have to like any of the artwork here since there is no one forcing him to like the exhibit. Although, he could have just said that he just felt like hanging out with his friends… but that would involve showing weakness in his tough guy persona and we can’t let that happen can we. If for some reason this still wasn’t enough, then here you go.
Instead Paulo chooses to insult Sue for liking something he doesn’t like and in a rather poor fashion. “Nobody even likes you! You should stop pretending to fit in and go back to your gay little drama club.” -Paulo Then came Sue’s lashing out and she mentioned Lucy for a low blow. Sue tries apologizing for it and her reward was Paulo digging into her on the last panel of today’s page. If that’s not a critical hit, then I don’t know what is.
supertails19 October 10, 2013, 2:04 PM EST.
Paulo may admit he’s immature, but I still don’t see why he’d say to Sue that nobody likes her, that she doesn’t belong with the group, and that she may as well go back to her __ drama club.
Sue was mean, but still.. Paulo has a long way to go…

Good @supertails19 . Now tell it from Paulo’s perspective.
Edit: Nevermind, because you don’t have to. @Tylord actually explains both sides. Also, how come @Tylord ‘s comment isn’t marked as insightful?

DinR October 10, 2013, 3:01 PM EST.
Somehow I knew that it was gonna be something like this lmao. Tell it like it is Paulo. Its funny how people are saying the way he was acting was distracting and immature yet David was the one who was actually doing it. Stuff like that irritates me. The only thing he ever did do was try and take Mikes mp3 thing or whatever the **** it was. Makes me laugh everytime. Paulo may not be my favorite character, but come on guys cut him some ****ing slack.
Random dude October 10, 2013, 3:13 PM EST.
@Gate-Senpai: Kind of hard to give Paulo’s side when somebody else already did. Besides, I was only answering why Sue was mad to Blank on Purpose. If you want me to say something about Paulo’s side, then I’ll just say something short and sweet. Paulo got left behind by his friends and overheard them gossiping about him. Even when he went out of his way and put effort into going up to see them, he ends up being told that he isn’t trying. Well that’s nice right. It’s fun being told that you didn’t put enough effort into something. I think that’s enough reason to be annoyed and being told that he doesn’t care about Lucy is like a slap to the face for him.
Are you happy now, Senpai?
As for Tylord’s comment… well it seems great in my opinion. I guess we have to wait to see if it makes it to the top 3.

@supertails19 Thank you for using “Senpai” correctly in your sentence. You may not know it but you used it correctly so thanks. It really irks me when people use foreign words in a different way than they are supposed to be used, and then they try to act like they know what they are saying.
So, again, Thanks.
HardyTorne October 10, 2013, 3:53 PM EST.
Well, paulo is honest and doesn’t care what gonna say other people about it, he just act like he feel is his way and don’t pretend to other people like him
eagle October 10, 2013, 3:56 PM EST.
The thing that most people here are msing is that Paulo is that he is being himself as opposed to Sue who was just following the group to fit in. Evidence in this is how Sue reacts to the art and how she pretended to understand the art when she was with Amaya. Check the previous pages. From the start of the chapter, Sue was on Paulo and David’s page for what ever they did, regardless if it was allowed or not. Paulo’s statements, though harsh are true and some may not like it but it is what it is. The moral is be yourself and not someone you are not. It’s also showing that Paulo is maturing as a character too.

Hey, I was at a museum the other day ago, a painting just like that is worth almost 15 million dollars, at least that’s what they say at the place. That canvas better be made out of jewel encrusted silk and painted over black.
13thprotector October 10, 2013, 4:44 PM EST.
Well, so much for dealing with this well and Paulo taking maturity in a haphazard situation… No one got hit of course (controversal to what some people thought should have happened), but this just makes the emotional toll after Lucy’s incident worse. And to think Lucy’s suicide attempt was enough; now there is even socialogical damage taking place. What a critical hit.

He’s got a point. I’ve been to an art gallery where a particular artist had done a series of canvases which just had either letters or words like ‘the’ on them. Noone could explain what meaning the artist was trying to convey yet I got cold stares when I said I didn’t understand how it was art.
Still think Paulo is a collossal ***** though. Have a very strong feeling he’s going to say something extremely cruel to Sue on the last page.

Insanity_Prevails October 10, 2013, 6:12 PM EST.
@ supertails19 if paulo makes sue cry I will have to call him a *** and she looks like she may but I don’t really see sue crying she is a big girl. With two pages left and two critical hits I don’t no how this can turn out as a happy ending.
Blue fox October 10, 2013, 6:22 PM EST.
Paulo’s acting like a douche and if you’re siding with him for being a douche then you’re probably a littler immature yourself.
Mr.Cat October 10, 2013, 6:28 PM EST.
I see the group falling apart. Sue was a really good friend and Paulo just shot her down. First he made Daisy cry now he’s shooting down Sue. Ever since Lucy left, Paulo has been a huge ball of cranky.
I think they’re both angry and both in the wrong. Both of them need to admit they miss Lucy a lot. They have a lot of anger stored up from losing her and don’t know who to take it out on. Who caused her to leave? Who caused her to hurt? What happened? Those are their questions that haven’t been answered. When you lose someone so close to you, you lash out at anyone, even at another really good friend.
To be honest, I’m glad that someone is behaving differently than just behaving like everything is normal. Ever since Lucy left, everyone grieved for a lil bit, then stopped and resumed their lives as if everything was normal. The ones that don’t know what happened don’t even question what happened. To me, Paulo and Sue are the only ones still wondering, still wanting answers. And that’s why they act so out of place and can’t resume their lives as if nothing’s happened. They can’t move on without knowing.
This is only my opinion. I figured I would get it out there though. I think they need to somehow realize that they’re only acting this way because they both need and miss Lucy. And that they should team up to figure out what happened.
Gabria93 October 10, 2013, 6:41 PM EST.

Carindel Girl October 10, 2013, 6:52 PM EST.
Again, Paulo, you could had left it at that and went your way but you just had to add flames to the fire. She apologized. Either accept the apology or don’t, but to bash her over something like this, is just dragging it out. A simple “Yes, I act immature and I own that, it’s how I deal with things,” is FINE, but to make that dig, is uncalled for and only proves Sue’s and Jasmine’s points. A “Yeah I don’t get it and I don’t want to get it, but that doesn’t make me scattered brain, it just means I don’t give a damn.” and leave it at that, would have been better, even if it is brash.
The difference is between Sue and Paulo is that Sue is trying to be respectful (being quiet and trying to follow museum rules) and at least make an attempt to learn and appreciate the art. Paulo has been disrespectful (as well as David) and has been making scenes. So of course they’re going to butt heads.
Their frustrations are getting the best of them and the whole art slash attitude issue is just the last straw between them both.
At least Sue had courage to apologize and try smooth things over and I give her a lot of props for that … apologizing … isn’t the easiest thing to do.
Admitting immaturity is an act of maturity in itself, but it doesn’t mean much when you just have to throw out the last insult.
Canny October 10, 2013, 6:53 PM EST.
SUE JUST WANTS TO BE ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS LEAVE HER ALONE GUYZ

Gate-senpai October 10, 2013, 7:20 PM EST.
Uhhhh… The Black Plague?
Hawz October 10, 2013, 7:20 PM EST.
That art is obviously being alone in the dark, wondering where the obstacles or unknown things lie around you causing your imagination to comprehend where or what is the reason you are there. Is it prison? Death? The inside of a giant burrito? We will never know will we?….
Also HURRY UP AND JUST MAKE UP ALREADY!
Mcturtle October 10, 2013, 7:31 PM EST.
Okay, I’m convinced. Paulo’s being a *****, he shouldn’t be so hard on Sue.
@Taeshi: Why does the word ***** get the ***** treatment? Someone used it in an essay for my AP class and the teacher wasn’t just okay with it, she thought that it was interesting, and that it gave a variety to the vocabulary in the essay. Of course, this IS horribly underfunded U.S. education.
Nevermind, I answered my own question:
a man regarded as stupid, unpleasant, or contemptible.
Man, I feel like an idiot.
Hawz October 10, 2013, 7:36 PM EST.
Yes, and I addressed that.
I have stated in other posts that I don’t condone Sue’s actions anymore than others, she is not innocent in this. That is obvious and shouldn’t have to be mentioned every time.
What I was talking about, was her response toward Paulo’s actions and attitude. And Paulo could had responded with more grace himself but to add that last dig is just adding fuel to the flames.
Canny October 10, 2013, 7:37 PM EST.
That’s a painting of a Happy Little Tree, by the way~
Huh? October 10, 2013, 7:40 PM EST.
I don’t think Paulo is being hard on Sue at all. To be honest she hasn’t been too nice to him either and she’s hit some pretty low marks, like mentioning Lucy to in a way as if he never cared or tried. Sue deserves to be called out on her ********. If that makes Paulo a “bleeped-out word” then so be it. He’s not taking her ****
Mark17 October 10, 2013, 7:42 PM EST.

Hawz October 10, 2013, 7:54 PM EST.
Ugh Paulo this is what makes me seriously start to dislike you, if you KNOW your behavior is immature and stupid and making everyone dislike it/you then WHY do you continue doing it? Same for David though at least in this instance David has proved he is capable of stopping on his own without a certain white cat to control him. Paulo has so much potential but always seems to fall short. Its hard to feel bad for him/sympathize when he just never seems to honestly wake up from it. Sue needs to stop trying to control everything but there’s nothing wrong with trying to learn and understand things, its insane to just say I’m gonna do whatever I want so I don’t even have to try. She just needs to realize that shes never going to know everything and everything is not going to be in her control and just go with the flow more.
Sammy October 10, 2013, 8:00 PM EST.
It’s difficult to interpret art when you’re a cat.
TheSonicSegaNerd October 10, 2013, 8:08 PM EST.
I think that was a low blow but he definitely need to be called on it by SOMEONE. He hit Lucy pretty low himself when he did that he was pretty much the last person she knew she could trust until that and the whole Jasmine Drama happened. I do think it was a bit harsh but I dunno its something he should have been called on since he seemed to think it was ok and it obviously bothered Lucy. I think Sue needed to be called out too pretty much everyone has been called out except Mike at this point and he probably will be too.
Sammy October 10, 2013, 8:11 PM EST.
I don’t get why they’re fighting. I was just reading the chapter, then all the sudden Sue’s making Paulo cry. And another thing… what they’re fighting about… why are they making such a big deal out of it??
The Nameless One October 10, 2013, 8:14 PM EST.
I feel bad for Paulo, everyone gives him **** and says he’s not trying, David acts up and no one gives him **** about it but when Paulo does it, everyone puts him down. They all went up to the exhibit and no one told him about it. They all ditched him there calling him immature, and then he heard them gossiping behind his back. So he finally goes up and then admits he doesn’t get it and Sue keeps having goes at him. Paulo calls her on her ******** and her pretending to know what the art means. And she responds back quite meanly and mentioning Lucy. So he turns and walks away. She does say sorry but then still keeps going and insults him again with a i’m-better-than-you-are-cause-you-don’t-try-at- all. It’s like none of his friends even notice he’s trying. Instead of yelling, he calls her on her hypocrisy by being brutally honest.
That’s one thing I always liked about Paulo, he was honest, he knows he has his own way of dealing with it and that all the others call him immature (except Rachel, she seems to be the only decent nice person to him at the moment, David always has his back but we haven’t seen him talk to Paulo about what’s happened) but he’ll own up to it.
Niv October 10, 2013, 8:18 PM EST.
@The Nameless One
Paulo and Sue make a big deal about EVERYTHING. Well… Maybe not Sue but mostly Paulo
Lyrix October 10, 2013, 8:18 PM EST.
omg, i’ve never seen sue look… like this.
HLTH October 10, 2013, 8:29 PM EST.
@The_Nameless_one: I believe that it started out as a fray about Paulo’s demeanor. But the Lucy ordeal was just shoved into Paulo’s face by Sue. However, I think Sue said that because of the Lucy ordeal, and she’s trying to find a reason, someone to blame, or she’s misinterpreting Paulo’s behavior as him not caring about what happened. Sue IS the last one to act out for that reason by choking Mike. I also believe that Sue and Paulo were the most affected by what happened.
In other words:
**** GOT REAL!!!
And thus, drama was reborn into BCB.
Hawz October 10, 2013, 8:29 PM EST.
I love how divided the comments are.
Just people saying “Wow, I love Paulo, take her down a notch” or “Wow, way to go Sue, take him down a notch” or “Why are they both being so stupid, why can’t they both think exactly like I am on the other side of the fourth wall?”
Nixnax101 October 10, 2013, 8:34 PM EST.
It really sucks to see them hurt each other like this…
They both seem to have been very stressed over what’s been happening with Lucy… they both blame themselves, but they don’t want to face their own guilt, so they’re blaming each other. They’re both just worried sick. They aren’t exactly arguing about the pictures, they’re arguing about how they interact with others and life itself. She’s saying he is just not even caring about life, while he is saying she only pretends to care and doesn’t even bother owning up to it.
Nixnax101 October 10, 2013, 8:38 PM EST.
I know exactly how Sue feels right now, but with Microelectronics as opposed to art.
Bunk October 10, 2013, 8:49 PM EST.
Okay, this is something that’s confusing the hell out of me. Paulo’s acting like he’s just dealing with the CURRENT situation (thought i should specify before someone starts yet another “it’s about lucy” comment). That’s all well and good, but what bugs me is if he has difficulty with stuff like this. WHY IS HE TAKING AN ART CLASS? I don’t know, maybe things work differently per school. But from the best of my memory, Art class was an elective after middle school. In other words it was a non mandatory class. But if this is the case, then why is he in a class he obviously has no interest in.
also that last line, so paulo’d rather roll around in the filth of ignorance than even make the attempt to expand his knowledge? Greeeeaaat, yet another to add to the number of blissful idiots.
buchanen_neket October 10, 2013, 9:03 PM EST.
I think this would have been deeper if paulo said that blank art is how he feel’s
JustSomeCritic October 10, 2013, 9:09 PM EST.
I hafta wonder how Lucy’s doing right now…
Natalie October 10, 2013, 9:10 PM EST.
Paulo and Sue are two of my favorite characters… though I admit Sue isn’t coming across in a very positive light here. Then again, it’s probably just her way of coping.
Steampunkgirl October 10, 2013, 9:17 PM EST.
Next chapter I bet is gonna be Paulo trying to find out what happened to Lucy.
And by that I mean he’ll harass Jordan constantly.
The Glus October 10, 2013, 9:37 PM EST.
Oh yeah, you’re right.
Paulo likely took the class because someone else was going to take it, he would rather socialize than learn.
I think we all know who that someone was.
Hawz October 10, 2013, 9:42 PM EST.
Wow…I was worried Paulo was gonna be the next one to take a fall emotionally from all the **** he’s been getting from everyone else about his immaturity, but at least in this instance. He’s just turned everything everyone else has dealt to him and in perfect form managed to redirect it back, and actually be right, (at least in my book.)
That’s the thing about the concept of maturity, its subjective. Whether Paulo explicitly understands that or if he’s just sort of innately came about that relative conclusion right now is beside the point, he at least has enough of a ‘center’ not to let others take him down that far.
And at least the real point has been made. Unlike so many others who are pretending to be things they aren’t. He understands his limits and has realized that he’s not going the play that game. He’s going to try to enjoy and understand things the way he sees best.
BetaMonkey October 10, 2013, 9:54 PM EST.
Got to disagree and point out you kind of counter you’re own argument. While it is true that he “won’t play the game” he’s also ruining the game for others. Rather he likes it or not it’s not his place to interfere with other’s viewpoints and stances. This is most showing of his lack of maturity. When everyone migrated from him, the mature person would have moved on and found some way to bide his time in the mean time. Paulo did not, rather he chose to actively interfere to try and bring them down to his level because “he’s not having a good time”.
So i have to ask, what does this really sound like, the mark of a mature person or an immature person? also should note there’s a difference between expressing an opinion and forcing your opinion on others. Paulo’s forcing his opinion.
buchanen_neket October 10, 2013, 10:08 PM EST.

It sound like a 15 year old to me, a 15 year old immature kid growing up. Paulo have been with these people practically his entire life and now they are drifting away. Of course he is going to try to, as you say “bring them down to his level.” He still wants to be with his FRIENDS. The problem is that apparently they don’t want to be with HIM. And he is expressing his opinion, not forcing it on her. But the problem is that he’s expressing it in a more aggressive way than the norm. Never did he say “that’s not right, I’m right, stop trying. ” He’s basically saying “I don’t get it and don’t say it’s because I’m not trying. You’re pretending to understand something that you don’t so stop trying to be better than me.”
Tylord October 10, 2013, 10:30 PM EST.
Tylord, there’s a little thing called context, namely you need to read the comment of who i was replying to. Betamonkey was saying that paulo is acting mature. nothing about his actions even closely resemble maturity.
buchanen_neket October 10, 2013, 10:33 PM EST.
I agree with Betamonkey. Please look at my other comment, which I wrote explaining how I think Paulo is maturing. I didn’t say he was mature yet, but he’s progressing little by little and unless the last page is contradicting what I said and he all out lashes at Sue, I’m sticking to my guns.
Tylord October 10, 2013, 10:37 PM EST.
@The Art Picture : YOURE SO UGLY YOU COULD BE A MODERN ART MASTERPIECE (Full Metal Jacket)
In all seriousness though. Paulo is just using his way of coping. Think about it the kid used to be shy as hell, made a deal with the devil and then got his weakness exposed. To top it all of he lost his greatest crush other than Tess…(who was a bitch for doing that to him) Point is if the guy wants to be immature to at least try and be happy, let him! Better than self-harm anyday.
Ikuto October 10, 2013, 10:52 PM EST.
Paulo and Sue loosing friendship? I think that these arguments are making their friendship grow because they are finally being honest with each other. At least Paulo is, sue needs to get on that and spill her true thoughts next page.
Twoplusfiveequallsseven October 10, 2013, 11:26 PM EST.
Look what you have done, oh beloved author of this beloved comic.
Were the division in our ranks as readers not enough between Mike and Lucy, it seems there is a growing generational division between Paulo and Sue.
Oh beloved author of this beloved comic, can you not save us from our follies and show us the middle ground in this mess?
On one side we have those who believe as they most likely feel the same that Paulo is the greatest slice of bread to grace this world and that Sue was indebted out of this natural course to give such an apology to such a wondrous friend (Watch this part get argued into pointless submission).
Then on the other side we have those upholding Sue over Paulo who is trying his best to remain friendly, yet receiving low “Lucy” comment hits from a very stern Sue.
Oh beloved author, may you show us readers the errors of our supposedly righteous ways?
Blank On Purpose October 10, 2013, 11:50 PM EST.
@Twoplusefiveequallseven: What friendship, these two never interacted throughout the whole serries. Poor sue is background, and the proto type lucy. Sue’s kinda like applejack.
JustSomeCritic October 10, 2013, 11:51 PM EST.
@Supertails19 You do realize that Paulo only said the “nobody likes you” bit after Sue pretty much implied the same (and said it to Mike)? I mean he bumped into her, and rather than her simply accepting that he was upstairs for his own reasons, she just went “Why are you up here?”, more with the implication of “Why are you up here when no one wants you up here?” than anything (as shown by her counter to Paulo’s “nobody likes you” comment). Sue was incredibly arrogant in how she talked to Paulo after he came upstairs, and she’s the one who started the upstairs argument by demanding to know why he came up, with the tone that no one wanted him there, when it really wasn’t her business to do so.
Deiser October 11, 2013, 12:01 AM EST.
Seems to me Paulo is calling Sue a phony.
I don’t understand the whole deal of trying to figure out the meaning of art. The artists obviously had intentions to express themselves and their meanings but I don’t live in their head so what I see could have a different meaning. Is it less valid a meaning?
Cyph October 11, 2013, 12:06 AM EST.
@Cyph: It wouldn’t be less valid as a meaning, it would just be inaccurate because it wouldn’t be what they tried to show. Without knowing what the artist wanted it to mean, no one can really tell you how accurate the meaning you see is though. It might not even have a meaning, it could simply be a swirl of colours that they painted because they like those colours.
Moogle October 11, 2013, 12:27 AM EST.
…wat happened to lucy exactly…
PartPup October 11, 2013, 1:35 AM EST.
The thing about Sue is that she’s kinda haughty and arrogant. And Paulo’s immature, and aware of his immaturity, but he’s not doing much to change it.
Also, y’all should read John Berger’s “The Ways of Seeing.” It has fascinating ideas on how the typical person (aka, you) is viewing art wrong. I mean, I see y’all debating on how to interpret the meaning of art, and I think y’all should give a read.
Wat October 11, 2013, 3:16 AM EST.
immaturity doesn’t excuse being a general ***
whatever October 11, 2013, 3:56 AM EST.
Paulo, there’s a difference between not being an art person and being an unapologetic and obnoxious arse to your friends. You’re the latter.
His friends aren’t annoyed at him for not liking art. They’re annoyed with him because he’s a ***** and they’re getting sick of it. The fact that people in the comments were hating on Sue for laying a well-deserved verbal smackdown to Paulo worries me.
Dee October 11, 2013, 4:47 AM EST.
This is “the difference between classes” in a class.
HongKat October 11, 2013, 5:58 AM EST.
Sue, there’s a description right there! Read it!
Petrotasia October 11, 2013, 6:35 AM EST.
Let’s look at the situation as it built up. Paulo had no intent of going up there, he even chastized those that did. He only decided to come up when everyone else went to the upper exhibit. If he had intent to come up for his own personal reasons anyways, he wouldn’t have made such a show out of everyone leaving him behind. The fact is, and this is basically what Sue saw, that Paulo didn’t come up till he was left behind (guarantee she noticed David up there). Her perception is that he only came up to cause problems, she had reasons to believe this as well as Paulo’s been nothing but a pain their entire trip.
Further, when he came up, she only asked “what are you doing here?” Paulo AGAIN acted like a ***** the rest of that page, following that up on the next page with “Nobody even likes you, you should stop pretending and go back to your gay little drama club.” Paulo struck first.
Now i think THIS page is supposed to be a quasi Brian/Quagmire moment, the problem is that Brian is an actual hypocrite who puts no effort into the causes he champions. Sue on the other hand has obviously put effort into them and Paulo (unlike Glen Quagmire) isn’t even honest with himself. What he’s saying is basically him hiding behind another layer. Rather than try and fix an obvious problem he’s in denial and entered a delusional state of “if they have a problem with me that’s their issue, i’m awesome”.
I honestly hope she doesn’t take Paulo’s words to heart and hits him with an uber critical shot on the next page. Because Paulo is not maturing, he’s delusional and lashing out at everyone in an attempt to draw them down to his level because he can’t bring himself to theirs.
buchanen_neket October 11, 2013, 6:44 AM EST.
Oooh and that’s one for Paulo!
BTW guys, I’ve been wondering why for a long time and I never really figured it out, but why is ****** censored? Poor her .
****** October 11, 2013, 9:17 AM EST.
Man, if she can’t come up with something for pure black I dunno if I can help you Sue, sounds like she lacks critical thinking and just learns what she’s told.
“The horror of death”
“The depth inside our own souls”
“What you see with your eyes closed in a dark room as you lay there with insomnia”
“The despair of depression”
Macca October 11, 2013, 9:47 AM EST.
Um, holy cr** there, man. Paulo may be immature sometimes, but “de.sional and lashing out at everyone in an attempt to draw them down to his level”??? Did you miss the fact that Lucy LEFT and how big a toll that took on everyone? I’ll refer you to the page where Paulo punches Mike.
Second, and more importantly, I’ll refer you to the beginning of THIS FRIGGING CHAPTER. Sue’s been pretty dang uptight the entire trip, even though she didn’t have to even LOOK at Paulo. Plus, that whole thing where everybody went upstairs? Passive-aggressiveness from bitchy Sue.
Paulo is generally treated like an idiot or an uncaring a**hole, but this isn’t true. With Lucy being gone, he’s got a reason to be mad. Everyone acts like he doesn’t care about anybody but himself, but he does. If anyone’s un characteristically abnoxious or abrasive this chapter, it’s Sue.

Thank you as much as I used to ship Paulo x Lucy I seriously hope he wakes up and gets it together.
Sammy October 11, 2013, 11:59 AM EST.
That’s no excuse. Do you see the other characters lashing out over Lucy? No, they are handling a hard situation, somewhat, like adults. Paulo’s actions on this page have no excuse nor are they warranted. If he’s upset about Lucy, great. Let him be mopey, but the moment he starts destroying those around him, that’s when he loses any sympathy.
And no, Sue hasn’t been uptight, have you seen a teacher? If anything she’s probably the class representative. I’d be laying down the law too if i was in her position because it’s my (her) *** that gets put in the sling if the school gets barred from using the museum for educational trips.
Finally i can’t stand what i’m seeing because i’ve seen this in real life. Kids who have great futures ahead of them get dragged down by some slacker. You want to know what Paulo’s future is if he doesn’t shape up? He’s going to be one of those 40-something burger flippers you see at mcdonald’s, stuck at the same job with baby mama drama all around him. and now he wants to bring down a kid who is probably going to make something of herself because he refuses to change. So excuuuuse me if i call his actions for what they are.

I don’t wanna start a fight, man. But. Paulo deals with stuff in a different way than everyone else. Plus, baby-momma and burger flipping? Kind of a step apart from being churlish in a museum. And as for Sue? I’m a fan of all the characters , despite their flaws. But she doesn’t need to control them all.
Zeb October 11, 2013, 10:42 PM EST.
Yay paulo you earned even more respect from me for that little speech, because it´s exactly how i think of it.
