Daisy, you of all people… why do you want beer?!

Haha, Daisy wants to try a little, but I have a feeling she might just go behind her boyfrind’s back to do it. I have a strong feeling she won’t like it though. Jeez, imagine a completely wasted Daisy… she cares way too much about what others think about her to do something that like that. Hmm, although this could be an easy way for her to prove she isn’t the little sister so many make her out to be.

Oh, what if she tries a little, then goes partying like a wild animal? What do you think Abbey will say about her wilder side? This’ll be fun. :3

That’s right Daisy, go with the cool kids and have some fun. Live on the wild side for once. 8-D Uhh, just don’t go too far.

I wonder if Abbey realizes that telling Daisy she can’t do something is not the best way to go about this.

@Jerkface +1

@Keyblade_Dragon -1… Unless that was some very loose sarcasm.

Man, my first experience with alcohol was straight liquor and I didn’t immediately go inflict property damage. The drinking age is so outdated from what we know now it’s not even funny. Course it depends on the individual.

Skid October 25, 2013, 1:30 PM EST.

Comment ID #263137

@Whattt
Yes, because ALL Germans drink at the youngest legal age possible.
I dunno, that’s a kinda silly generalization. It’s just that it’s kind of been y’know… clinically proven that drinking at a younger age has a multitude of negative effects due to the fact that an adolescent body isn’t as mature as it could be by the age of around 21 or so.

Now as for the page, this may be surprising, but if Daisy wants to drink a little bit I think that’s fine, but she shouldn’t;
a. Get carried away (Overall, use good judgement)
b. Do so behind Abby’s back (Especially considering alcoholism was kind of a big deal for Abby, considering his father was that way.)
If she does get drunk, she better become a badass fighter drunk like Michael though.
Obviously, I feel that it would be the overall best option to not drink whatsoever, but Daisy is curious, and this is BitterSweetCandyBowl we’re talking about here.

Damien October 25, 2013, 1:38 PM EST.

Comment ID #263140

@Keyblade_Dragon that is definitely not true, the reason the drinking age is 21 and not 18 anymore is because before 1984 (when they changed it) there were many deaths involving drunk driving for people between 18 and 25.

Guys, it’s just drinking, better a first experience there than at a random college party or something of the like.

…is nobody else concerned about how controlling Abbey is being? It’s one drink, it’s really not that big of a deal in hindsight. Daisy is growing up and getting curious, about alcohol and evidently from that one previous chapter about sex. Let her grow up a bit; isn’t that what her character bio says she wants to do anyways?

Look at Paulo, completely in his element. Drinking that fine beer and arguing with Abbey like it’s pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey.
Daisy innocent and curious as ever. As if her latest escapade of getting condoms “just in case” wasn’t enough, now she wants to know what it’s like to drink alcohol.
It’s good stuff Daisy, and you’ll probably take on a whole new element once you have some. I bet she becomes extroverted as hell after a few drinks and becomes the life of the party; it’s how it is with dem shy folk. Quite on the outside, jumping and yelling inside like a party going out of style.
We got the “police” in here, with Pvt. Mike and Sgt. Abbey trying to throw things into a square. Come on guys, it’s Rach’s birthday party; they’re just doing it right!
Guys got to stop being scared to fly or grabbing each other’s wings when they try to fly. Show some curiosity like Daisy and you don’t need to “swim in the pool”, just get your “feet wet” and see if you like it.

Damn Abbey, Daisy just wants to taste, go in the corner and take your chill pills. If you’re so concerned, then make sure everyone gets a safe ride home. It’s better than simply saying you oppose what they’re doing.

Since when did Abbey tell Daisy what to do??? Daisy can’t even have a say in the matter. He makes it sound like it’s only his way. I sense that there will be conflict in the ;_; X Furious Abbey ship over this, eventually.

Hawz October 25, 2013, 2:12 PM EST.

Comment ID #263159

What’s the problem? So Paulo can drink and Daisy not? Is it because she is too cute to get drunk and Abbey don’t want to see her drunk and Paulo might eventually end up drinking alcohol because of unknown reason so there is no point to preventing him from drinking bear? …Probably. :nope:

JayLime October 25, 2013, 2:17 PM EST.

Comment ID #263160

Is it weird that I’m not at all surprised by Daisy’s reaction?

I’m not even sure if it’s a new, mischievous side to her, or just pure curiosity. She does love to learn, after all. She’s too much of a good, little girl for me to believe she just wants to party hard, but I guess some people can have their days.

If this is a new side to her, then I guess Augustus was right about Daisy all along (Love My Way). That this is how she really wanted to be.

Then again, looking back at Safe Boundries, this could very well be her eager to “grow up” and catch up with Paulo and the older kids.

So many theories!

the eager Daisy, still wanting to be more mature than we’re pretty sure she’s ready for, Abbey being a temperamental Abbey taking a page from Mike’s book on holier-than-thou rants (As if a couple swigs will get her drunk Abbey, more than likely she’ll take a sip and gag because it tastes gross) and Paulo taking this opportunity to rub it in his face

Vega October 25, 2013, 4:33 PM EST.

Comment ID #263191

Mike’s just jealous cause if he has some, his parents’ll find out about it… he ate a whole bowl of liquor chocolates, he MUST like it XD
And Daisy is so adorable :love: I understand her wanting to try some beer, just out of curiosity. Heck, i’ve done the same (I’m 16), taken a few sips of my brother or parent’s beer or wine. It’s not like she’ll have a whole can, she’s more responsible than that.
And Abbey is not going about the right way dealing with this. :x I suppose this’d be a touchy subject for him because I assume his dad did a lot of drinking, but really, it’s not like she wants to get wasted, just see how it tastes. And «more likely to end up in jail»? Really? That’s just a stereotype, Abbey, you should realize that. That and how Daisy’ll get defensive of her dear Paulo :P
Speaking of which, Abbey and Paulo are more than due for an epic head-to-head showdown… XD

Sambo October 25, 2013, 4:38 PM EST.

Comment ID #263192

Abbey should let Daisy at least try it. ****. My parents had no qualms letting me taste alcohol growing up (under even age 10). Not drink it, obviously. Tasting it. Which is what she wanted to do.

Abbey’s not her mom. Let the girl do stuff on her own. She doesn’t need her boyfriend’s damn permission.

Ravako October 25, 2013, 4:47 PM EST.

Comment ID #263194

Ravako, uh huh, the difference is you had your parents to guide you on the subject. It’s akin to when a parent has a kid smoke a carton of cigarettes so they’ll never want to smoke again. The idea was to make you sick or have you find out how disgusting it tastes to lower your curiousity. Daisy on the other hand has a bad influence near her that will encourage her to keep drinking, get drunk, multiply that with Daisy is naive and with a bunch of boys, hormonal teenage boys i might add. Definitely far from a good idea.

@ket,
Exactly.

Red October 25, 2013, 4:57 PM EST.

Comment ID #263196

Aaaand Daisy continues to remind me more and more of myself. xD

It’s better to let kids do this stuff gradually instead of making it a big forbidden thing, I think. Trying a little in a safe and pressure free environment could prevent someone from binging all at once when they finally get a chance. Eg, I started with wine at dinner or toasts and so on instead of underage beerfests, and I’m now a responsible college aged drinker. Yaaay

That said, I dunno if this is what I’d call safe and pressure free… :P

Oh and @Sambo you bring up a good point with Abbey’s dad possibly factoring into this.

Drunken Daisy could be a little scary but I’m curious how that would end.

I’m not encouraging anything or saying its ok but a small sip wouldn’t be enough to get her drunk, especially if she intends to do that behind Abbey’s back. If she is curious about trying it i don’t think she would go crazy right away just saying.

And in the meantime I’m actually starting to dislike Paulo. He’s been acting like a jerk lately (at least from my perspective anyways). Could the group be slowly drifting apart?

I can understand warding a friend off due to age is considerate and all, but you really just need to let them make their own choices. Yes it’s not a good idea in the first place, but unless their doing themselves and others harm, you’ve really no place to judge them.

Epiclyra,

Again, as i’ve pointed out many times. LOOK AT THE SITUATION (and no i don’t mean that situation).

There is no adult supervision
There is alcohol
This is a bunch of hormonal teenagers
There is a EXTREMELY naive female teenager who could be easily conned into over consumption.

What part of this is not adding up in your head to a situation where “their doing themselves and others harm”. Keyword for Daisy is doing herself harm.

I’m sorry to be blunt here, but there has already been two attempted rapes (edit: forgot about the situation for Lucy in confrontation) in this comic. Do you get the picture for one of the worst case scenarios for this situation. If i need to be clearer on this scenario, the stats are extremely high for the cause of a SA being that a female got drunk at a party.

Granted this is the worst case scenario for Daisy, it could go another direction. But i do keep that possibility open as a likely conclusion. The other scenarios are not AS bad but they’re still pretty bad.

Yeah thats what I was thinking about too, its never a good idea to learn about drinking from your irresponsible/underage friends at a PARTY. I could see if it was just the gang at someones house (well not even then really but that would at least be a bit safer then this) or with their parents but come on. They probably won’t even know half the people there and it doesn’t take much to over do it at that age, someone could easily get taken advantage of or raped. I don’t see abbey or mike really being over the top at all this is a pretty dangerous situation, that’s already starting off bad. I wonder is Taeshi gonna go for realistic or funny this chapter since she has no pets/fan characters for comic relief?

@Misanthrope That link right off the bat is based off the brain scans of someone who has never had alcohol and someone who has openly abused it.

1 Night of casual drinking ≠ Life long brain damage

Don’t get me wrong, a bunch of unsupervised kids with strong alcohol is the WORST decision. But don’t go fear mongering something people are gonna have to deal with at some point in their lives. Having a strong sense of responsibility is all you need to NOT end up a statistic.

The side of Daisy we never knew. Not all that innocence right? I think she’s observant enough to realize one very big factor. As much as Paulo does these things, he doesn’t seem any worse off in life for it. (granted Paulo warned about early sex causing issue, he certainly wasn’t shying away from that beer.)

@Sammy,

Honestly the “won’t even know half the people there” is what’s setting off red alert alarms in my head (visualize general ackbar’s “it’s a trap” scene). Who are these other characters? Why suddenly drop our characters in with a group of new unknown characters who are apparently party friends of Rachel? Why dump a buttload of alcohol into the mix? Why subtract any adult supervision from the situation? Also call into question the level of these new characters, ummm, character, especially knowing how promiscuous Rachel is.

I don’t know but my gut is saying that the title is an ironic one with the conclusion not being a happy one, one way or the other.

Seriously tho, daisy you rascal you. I have a feeling this is going to start where there actuilly is a problem in daisy and abbeys relationship. Abbey gets so high strung over his moral principles (and maybe his anger at paulo), that actions from daisy, wanting to do something “bad” for once, causes him to get angry with even her

Some have mentioned about Abbey being possessive or controlling here, but I’d like to think his reaction was brought on by the fact that it was Paulo of all people who was suggesting Daisy drink it, considering what he thinks of Paulo or the way he treats his friends.

@buchanen_neket You are seriously overestimating the danger levels of alcohol. How old are you? Alcohol doesn’t make teenagers raging raep machines. Calm down.

Daisy will probably over-consume alcohol. She’ll get sick. Abbey will be a little miffed she didn’t listen to him, but we’ll all get a lesson about alcohol and an insight into Daisy’s naivete and curiosity (not to mention her knack for being pressured into things by her peers, etc, etc). My main point is that Abbey isn’t her damn parent and, in all brutal honesty, has no ****ing business telling her so adamantly what she can and cannot do. “You can’t” is not a statement saying “this will be a bad idea;” it is a statement saying “I, your boyfriend, have the authority over what you can and can’t do. And I do not grant you permission to do this.” Abbey is acting as he normally does: possessive and controlling. I absolutely have no tolerance for it, even IF he has sound advice and reasoning.

Ravako October 25, 2013, 11:41 PM EST.

Comment ID #263252

Okay seriously, the reason i’m going off on this angle is because I am an experienced drinker. Hell i can down nearly a full 12 pack while barely getting buzzed and have had to resort to stronger liquors lately like fireball whiskey or Soco 100 to actually get drunk. Second we aren’t talking adults here, these are teens with probably a very low tolerance for the stuff. I started when i was 14 myself, i know the difference in effect on motor skills and inhibitions between an adult and a teen.

Now not everyone is the same, however teens shouldn’t be drinking because 1) they aren’t responsible enough yet and 2) enraged hormones + alcohol don’t mix especially considering one of the effects is lowering a person’s ability to make rational or moral judgements. But ultimately the stats are on my side on this one, trust me you remember the stats when you get your *** plunked down in a 3 hour sexual harrasment training seminar once every six months because your CO is trying to cover his ***.

So no i am not overestimating the situation. It is true that it could go another way, however the possibility remains open because Taeshi has gone really ****ing dark before. But beyond that it’s not a moral or ethical one for why i am pointing out the worst case scenario, it’s because of all the kids here basically cheering this on when at this point they should be concerned that this could be another dark chapter. If teens want to learn about alcohol, fine, i’m all for it. However this is not the scenario they need to be learning it in, specifically because bad things do happen in scenarios like this.

Also will people PLEASE get off the Abbey is controlling Daisy thing. He’s ****ing right about this, like it or not he needs to step in and protect his girlfriend from a bad situation. That’s what any decent guy would do. Oh, wait, i forgot, in the modern age of feminism a man protecting his significant other is him trying to dominate her, right. Screw that. It’s not controlling to protect someone from themselves ESPECIALLY if they are about to make a really stupid mistake.

also, one other thing i forgot @ravako, there’s one more reason. This was a kick in the gut to me when i first went through training. But you’ll love this because it basically means that at least the US legal system agrees with the idea of a persons incapability to make decisions while intoxicated. Did you know, according to US law, if you have intercourse with someone who is intoxicated, even if they are willing, it’s considered rape? I’m not even kidding on this one, this point was a key section of the training we got in the SH seminars. According to the law, a person under the influence is legally unable to give consent. Therefore if they wake up the next morning and freak out, they can legally have you arrested on rape charges.

@Ravako

No he isn’t you are just VERY fortunate to have not been in or had a friend in this kind of situation turn out bad. I have heard about/seen it many times and don’t drink around strangers as a result, people get raped, they get beaten up, and have all kinds of things happen because NO ONE is there sticking up for them. Rape happens A LOT in these situations fortunately some don’t remember at all but sadly many do and don’t report it. Its not that it makes them into monsters its that it makes it easier for someone who has no problem taking advantage of the situation to do just that. Abbey/Mike are being controlling but there honestly should be more people like them there. Its not like they’re experienced drinkers or that there is anyone there reliable to keep the situation from getting out of control. If anything horrible happened to Daisy how do you think he would feel? How would SHE feel? I could see you saying it was none of his business if he was some random stranger off the street passing by but come on.

@buchanen_neket

Thank you! Thats pretty much what I meant my friend was in almost this exact same situation, and unfortunately her boyfriend left and she had no Mike there and ended up being raped. Sometimes you DO need someone there to say “hey stop this isn’t a good idea!”, I’m pretty sure you’d rather be irritated but other wise have fun then be assaulted and scarred. And I agree its not so much that the drinking is bad most teens have a drink before 21 its the setting that’s pretty scary. And Taeshi is usually pretty realistic, actions have consequences good or bad and the setting is leaning more towards bad here. But hopefully since they’re all in a group and there are at least 2 responsible people there it won’t be horrible. Unless they have a fight and Abbey leaves or something like that it may just end up being silly.

EDIT: Well yeah if someone is drunk out of their skull and has no idea what happened it pretty much is rape. Its even considered rape if a person consents once and then you want to do it more but they say no and you force them. If a person can’t think clearly or they tell you no its rape

Actually that was another part of the SH training, I recall one guy literally yelled “oh come on!” when he heard a girl can change her mind half way through (mid-coitus), say no and the guy has to stop otherwise it becomes rape as well.

Remember Daisy, Abby’s father was an alcoholic. He’s not saying “don’t drink” because he thinks you cant handle a few gulps. He’s telling you not to because of everything he’s suffered because of it, and he cares too much about you to see you also suffer negative consequences.

I myself don’t see the harm from a little drinking, but I come from a country where most police see youngsters drinking and don’t do a thing about it. I guess you can say i’m used to it. I’ve even drank a bit myself at parties (in moderation of course). Also, I think my neurons are just fine. I graduated high school with straight A’s, so everyone saying a little drinking makes kids dumb is overreacting. xD

I’d say the problem in this page is the probability of Paulo and the “cool kids” drinking themselves unconscious. It’s way too much booze, and they’ll definitely not going to let it go to waste :P

Let’s just hope Abby and Daisy don’t fight over this, and Paulo doesn’t take too much of a liking for alcohol. I’d cry if our little somali turned into a stinky drunk. :(

Actually America’s drinking age is 21 because if any state does change the age, as they have the right to do, the government will actually stop funding that entire state’s highways. Since no state has enough money to waste on their highways, the age stays stuck at 21.

Silveryogurt October 26, 2013, 1:37 PM EST.

I think we need to pay more attention to Abbey’s face in panel 4. If he was possessive or controlling, he’d be angry, not sad/desperate. He doesn’t want Daisy to be hurt by the negative effects of alcohol, and, though a people said she probably wouldn’t drink a lot, Abbey is very extreme. Remember his campaign, when he said that if anyone was thought to be bullying they would be expelled? He probably takes the same mentality about breaking the law; any offense is still an offense worth punishing. Not to mention his traumatic experiences with his father, who was probably an abusive drunk, so he’s probably only had experience with violent or angry drunks before in his life.

yey October 26, 2013, 1:48 PM EST.

Comment ID #263295

@Silveryogurt There’s a reason the drinking age is 21. It’s because the average human body stops growing completely, inside and out, and drinking underage could cause for some dysfunctions in growth, and drinking too early could also cause some serious defects to your insides as well.
Some families allow things to be drank inside their home, like a glass of wine, but that’s about it.

Lawful Good…Chaotic Neutral… It reeeaaally does describe them! Except Paulo’s “neutral” is just a false mask he’s wearing, I think he’s secretly chaotic good but. It’s kinda like the characters are all juggling two sides of themselves and some (like Abbey) are more obviously trying to be one way rather than the other, and others (like Paulo) are not really giving an obvious **** about which side of the coin they’re on that day (but we know Paulo is still struggling, which is why he acts out all the time.)

Honestly, nobody is surprised by Paulo drinking, but not for the right reasons… He probably had drowned his sorrows about Lucy more times than tonight, and he either will go the casual drinking route (a few beers) or become “that guy who is barfing in the bathroom like a noob.”

I really want Daisy to get drunk XD

@CherushiMetshumari (sorry if I spelled that wrong)
Yeah, it’s not healthy to drink large amounts no matter what age you are though. Alcohol is basically poison. All I’m saying is, America’s drinking ages would be a lot more varied from state to state if it weren’t for the highway funding. Just because America’s drinking age is 21 and other countries’ is 18, doesn’t mean that America is right and all other countries are wrong. And honestly I believe that if you’re old enough to be forced into the armed forces, you’re old enough to have a beer, but.

@another anon

Speaking of Jessica……..wheredafuq is she?!

Silveryogurt October 26, 2013, 2:12 PM EST.

Comment ID #263298

Where is everyone getting that Abbey’s dad is an alcoholic from? He never took one drink in the comics he was in, and was never mentioned as having drank or drank too much. Maybe he was, but there was nothing actually saying he was — the only obvious thing was he was just plain physically and mentally abusive to the mother (not even to the kids).

Also guys, daisy isn’t caving to peer pressure. No one here is telling her she should drink. She asked what it’s like, Paulo says he has a small sample available if she wants. Not ‘here you should drink this right now to find out!’ The most sober lightweight isn’t going to get tipsy from a few sips of beer just to try it. I’m pretty sure Daisy can make her own decision from a sip to not drink any further. Honestly Paulo is being pretty chill about drinking, maybe he learned this life lesson after Jessica got him liquored up at the night club (you know, where HE gave into peer pressure to impress her). Does anyone honestly think he could do the same thing to Daisy and potentially get into into a bad situation? I have faith the main cast can handle themselves just fine at this party. I sense major embarrassment and hurt feelings being way more likely what comes from this chapter.

I also have to laugh about people mentioning the kids going to jail, The protagonists are the ripe age of 15, the youngins will go to juvenile hall at worst or just sent back to their parents and fine the parents (which seems to increasingly be a way to deal with mild juvenile delinquency in the states). The other older kids could end up in jail for drinking and serving to minors if they’re closer to 17/18.

another Anon October 26, 2013, 2:15 PM EST.

Comment ID #263299

Also the drinking age is 21 not because of concern over physical health. You can blame MADD for that; It was the concern of operating motor vehicles under the influence (which let’s admit, is pretty bad). Drinking age was up to the individual states, so most had 21 as the age, then some states elected to lower the drinking age to 18 to match the voting age. After MADD got big, most states upped to 19 as the minimum, until in 1984 we had the National Minimum Legal Drinking Age Act, in which the federal government would take highway and road funding from states if they did not raise the drinking age to 21. This is a major reason why Louisiana has some of the shittiest roads in the US; they refused to up the drinking age for awhile. This means the states are all in -voluntary- compliance, besides the non-state territories which just took their lack of funding and drank to it. You an wave your health concerns around all you want (and they might be true), but that’s the ACTUAL reason for 21 drinking age.

Maybe it’s just me, but possibilities for teen parents seems more of an issue than the minimal consequences of sipping one beer in the company of your best friends. It is unlikely that none of her friends would stop her from over-consumption, or that Abbey would ditch her and let her even get wasted, let alone let a guy rape her. I don’t why everyone is in a panic.

Even the legal issues. Unless the party has rippin loud music or drunk kids stumbling around outside, no one is going to call the cops about a public disturbance. The cop would literally have to be doing rounds in the neighborhood, which is also unlikely.

Calm down people.

Actually a better question to ask is how they all got to Rachel’s house. If they come out of the party drunk or tipsy to be picked up by their family, since the main gang isn’t old enough to drive, I’m sure there will be angry parents. I wonder how they even got to the house in the first place O.o

Oh my god, can someone seriously explain this to me. Since when has a guy protecting his girlfriend become a sign of the guy being “possessive” of her. It’s not like abbey walked up to Paulo and pulled a 80’s jock routine of “stay away from my girl or i’ll kick your ***”. Seriously, in my day (ha now i really am sounding like an old coot) doing something like what Abbey is doing was expected, mandated even, of the guy. If you didn’t and the girl got hurt or in trouble chances are you’d get knocked upside the head by somebody for not watching her back. So when the **** did it become a bad thing to watch your girlfriend’s back.

@Lickit&stickit,

You’re not looking further than the immediate situation, what if daisy from that secret sip finds she likes beer. What if she starts slipping away from the others to get another drink during the party? Do you think Paulo would stop her or do you think he’d encourage her since he’s hell bent on dragging everyone to his level?

@buchanen_neket

I think the fan unrest has more to do with the Abbey ordering her not to and making her uncomfortably slip away into the “bathroom” as he yells at Paulo, as opposed to calmly explaining why he thinks it’s not a good idea for her to have a swig.

Edit to your edit: I mean what if? Beer is often more appealing to boys from what I’ve seen at parties. Girls tend to like sweeter beverages like margarita’s. I seriously doubt she is going to go, “OMG BEEEERR IS LIK THE BEST EVER!!1111” and down the entire case in the kitchen. If everyone else is aiming to get wasted, she might have pressure to drink more. Again, I doubt this is the case. It seems the group is just kickin it with a few drinks to feel more grown up.

Plus, it is a bit harder to get drunk with just beer because it is very filling and you have to be pretty motivated to drink it all fast. Now if Rachel had vodka, jello shots, and mixers at her place, that is another issue entirely. ;)

Look at who he’s talking to though, someone suffering from headupass-itis at the moment. He has to yell just so Paulo can hear him. Also what’s wrong with that “you can’t” he’s right. It’s not like he screamed it at her. Note the period at the end, his tone could be just a statement not a dictation. I think people are hearing how they want to hear it because it’s a girl. Let’s do an experiment, let’s say mike was about to take a drink and abbey went through a similar routine right up to mike saying “why not?” and abbey saying “you can’t.”. Would it still sound like an order?

Probably not, the reason people are hearing order is because it’s a male talking to a female. For some reason the mentality regarding guys has shifted alot thanks to the feminist movement. Because of this even the simplest thing that a guy does in a form of media gets blown out of proportion by people jumping to “OH MY GOD, OPPRESSOR, HE’S TRYING TO OPPRESS HER!!!!”. Unfortunately we don’t have the benefit of voice actors on this form of media so how a person hears what Abbey said can wildly vary between one person to the other because of different mentalities. It can also shift if someone persuasive debates that Abbey is dictating “you can’t” not simply stating “you can’t”.

And i know where this will lead “oh so why is daisy leaving if it wasn’t an order” because daisy’s a spoiled princess who hates being even told she can’t do something multiplied by her current “i want to grow up” mentality.

I think Abbey telling Mike would feel the same in my opinion if he was being pushy about it to the point Mike was uncomfortable. But the angry face and NO, and later argument with Paulo, sounds like a bossy order.

I see it as people and people. Maybe that’s just me, but I’d find it rude if I was at a party and a my best friend of the same gender told me I couldn’t have a sip of beer. NO, then argument with the guy who suggested after I expressed interest, without them telling me why.

“Beer is often more appealing to boys from what I’ve seen at parties”

BWAHAHAHA. Yeah go to the south and say that. The girls there will probably smack the **** out of you then drink you under the table with beer, whiskey, and tequila. The type of drink any drinker prefers is not based on gender, it’s based on the first drink they are given by a friend. Peer pressure and all that, eventually they develop a taste for it. For instance mine is Tequila, that was because it was the first drink i had at a party. It tasted nasty as **** to me, but i drank it anyways. eventually i developed a taste for it.

That aside, actually it’s been proven that girls are more susceptible to the effects of alcohol due to different physiology, lower body weight, etc. Consider also that this is a teenage girl, her actual body (not the fur) probably has her at maybe 50-60 lbs. Yeah her first beer is enough to buzz her, especially considering she has no alcohol tolerance yet.

Okay, in your case it’s a case of difference in context. See i don’t think he yelled NO directed at Daisy, he was yelling NO at Paulo, that also explains why his face is angry in that panel and softens a bit when he says “you can’t”. He’s not talking to the same person between those two panels.

I live in Alabama. That’s as southern as it gets…. Also, assuming the girls weigh like normal people weight in their universe, your guess is definitely off. Healthy girls that age range 100-120. Regardless, their universe alcohol would prolly be adjusted to a similar ratio to whatever our standards are for intake.

I’m a girl and weigh about 118 and have a lower tolerance than nearly everyone I’ve ever met drinking. And at two beers, I’m only slightly buzzed. At four, I’d probably be a little boisterous and more willing to say things than I would normally. But I actually can’t physically drink much more than that at once because I run out of room in my stomach.

And that’s with smaller volumes of mixed drink with a vodka shot, not beer. Beer is bubbly and gasy, and it’s not so easy to down so many at once to get super wasted. That’s why people recommend starting with beer to guage your tolerance. Experienced drinkers could down quickly, but not little first-timer Daisy. I think your main argument throughout the page is very exaggerated. :P

A healthy HWP ADULT female is 100 to 120. 15 years of age they are still growing and the healthy weight shifts accordingly due to expanding body mass caused by growth during puberty. I might be a bit off because i don’t know her actual body design under the fur. So my highball eyeball estimate would be 60-70 with fur. I’m estimating this because i’m basing it off my ex, she was 100 lbs at 15 and was fairly heavy set at about 5’6 maybe 5’7. So no 100 at 15 is not the HWP weight. Also, yeah let me rephrase what i said, go to Oklahoma or Texas and say what you said. There’s also a difference between low tolerance and no tolerance. You have a low tolerance because you have introduced alcohol into your system. However the first time was it the same scenario or did the effect feel a bit stronger. Probably stronger because you’re introducing something new and the body is interpreting how to deal with the new substance.

Yanno, because all drinking leads straight to completely trashed. Nobody ever drunk in moderation. *rolleyes* I’d be fine with Daisy trying it. She probably wouldn’t like the taste much anyway.

Also the whole “can’t drive until you’re x years old” “can’t drink until you’re x years old” “can’t smoke until you’re x years old” “can’t have sex until you’re x years old”….IT’S ALL MADE UP NUMBERS! Someone just arbitrarily slapped numbers on them and made it a law. There’s no scientific reason for any of the numbers.

From what I’ve seen they all walk to school and they literally walk everywhere else too except distances such as the next town over. So my guess is they ALL walked to her house. Somehow. I don’t know a single school system that has this many kids all living next to each other and within walking distance of the school. AND within walking distance of shops and stuff. It’s a weird world these kids live in. My world was nothing but cars, and I lived in the suburbs with half of all the other kids!

Macca October 26, 2013, 6:53 PM EST.

Macca,

In the beginning yes, that’s why there was a lot of variation in law from state to state. However since then studies have been performed in order to determine a standard age when a person is responsible enough, physically matured enough, etc to participate in such activities. It was determined that a persons brain is still maturing until somewhere between 20 and 30. Physically a person reaches maturity about 18, thus why the smoking age in majority states is 18 since it’s determined that’s the median for when a persons lungs have reached full development. So no, the ages aren’t arbitrary and “slapped on”. Further, agree or not, IT’S THE LAW. I don’t agree with the seatbelt laws, if someone’s dumb enough to drive without their belt on then they deserve to go splat when they wreck. But i do adhere to them.

Finally, we had an old saying in the navy “Regs and SOP are written in blood” meaning that the reason a reg or procedure exists is because someone was severely injured or killed before. Same thing for civilian laws, they exist because something has happened that required federal or state intervention to prevent people causing harm to themselves or others.

I think the reason most people didn’t freak out about her and Abbey possibly getting pregnant (and yes there were people probably about the same amount as here like what 3-4? ) is because it seemed highly unlikely they’d do anything. Where as here the situation is somewhat more dangerous as you have not only beer but who knows what or how much alcohol coming in, strange kids, no parental supervision etc. So Abbeys freaking out is not really as serious, had he grabbed her and forced her out of the party or gotten physical I could see you saying “OMG WHAT A CONTROL FREAK!!!”. So far he hasn’t crossed any lines of unreasonableness imho. And calm down? I’m not upset lmao I’m just not apart of the 95% of posters who think this is cool, or great, or not a bad idea, why does having a different opinion automatically make me or anyone else upset? I thought posting your opinion without attacking other posters or the author was a discussion. That being said we were only pointing out the danger, it could go either way this could be harmless and silly or take a sinister turn for the worse, Taeshi frequently goes from happy to sudden disaster so you never really know.

@Macca
I lived in the suburbs and we walked almost everywhere, unless it was like more then 10 miles away we walked. And from my experience most kids in a school all live within a certain radius (unless its a charter or some other special school) of said school. So its not really surprising to me that they can walk to school or walk to each others houses etc. And if they live near metro or some kind of bus system then it’d be easy for them to get around as long as they had some money.

@buchanen_neket

Quote: “I get what you’re trying to do, but it’s also not a good idea to blind a person for the sake of self image. ”

Healthy varies, it’s not just for self image! My cross-country team in high school weighed anywhere from 109-125. And none of them were unhealthy by any stretch since they could place top 2 against the largest schools in the state. No one is blinding themselves if they said this is a healthy range.

Telling a teen or an adult women that healthy is ONLY under or around 100 lbs, is not something you should ever be doing. Especially as a guy, especially since you aren’t a doctor, and especially when the adult women you are used to are 100-105. :/ For a tall woman that is potentially really unhealthy.

You know that the human heart can give out if you are too skinny right? That’s what happens to anorexic and malnourished people. And my sister weighed around 110 around 17 at 5’8” and when she got pneumonia, the doctor had to explain to her how dangerous it was for her because her body did not have the weight to help her get better.

These sort of comments about women needing to fit X tiny size at X age is exactly why women have body issues. And why they go through really unhealthy methods to reach those sizes.

Just… Don’t say those kinds of things anymore. Okay?

Lickit&stickit,

This one’s going to take a while.

The exact opposite is true as well, blinding someone by telling them they are only either, as Gabriel Iglesias put it: big, healthy, husky, fluffy, and DAMN! can effect in the opposite direction that can create what we have now. A epidemic (or was it pandemic, however the CDC classed this) of obesity. Because while we spent the last 10 years discouraging the beauty myth we also didn’t educate in what actually is a healthy weight.

Oh let’s not forget that most Height Weight charts (civilian ones at least) have “healthy” with a 100 pound margin. According to the chart i found on medindia, healthy for 15 years old is 80 to 180 weight and 4’8-5’4 optimal height and i’m sure they aren’t the only ones. Hell CDC marked the proposed average weight for females for 15 at 90 lbs (i think, it was hard to decipher their chart).

But here’s the thing, self image and health are different objectives. Self image is based more on body type than anything else. Health is by actual determined by data and stats, to be exact, BMI measurement of how much fat a person has. A person could appear unhealthy but by BMI measurement they are perfectly fine. However the vice versa is true as well, a person can look healthy and attractive but by BMI is actually unhealthy (either end of the spectrum, skinny as hell or just exceptionally large breasts and hips). That’s why self image and health can’t be argued in the same argument because they have two different definitions.

Finally can someone remind me how the hell we got onto this subject from me taking an eyeball guess of Daisy’s weight in regards to how high her natural alcohol intake should be? Simply put she’s small and light, her natural tolerance by weight is going to be low. Maybe one beer before buzzing effect kicks in.

I’m with you on this one. I find it disturbing how many people are going “pssssh, she’ll only have a sip, come on, it’s not a bad idea”.
Daisy is being a little idiot. Sure she’s book smart, but she has no street smarts. She’s acting like a little princess with the “ohhhh maybe just a little?” and she hasn’t thought it through at all, she’s so hell bent on “I wanna be a mature person” that she doesn’t seem to care on consider any possible consequences. I think it’s good that Abbey is willing to stand up and say no cause he cares about her even though to everyone else it’s “omg he’s so controlling, wtf”.

This is a bad case scenario for 1st time drinking:
- they don’t know alot of the people there
- alot of the people there are underage drinking and think it’s cool
- probably keep egging Daisy on to drink more
- there is no supervision - but hey, at least there’s two friends that are trying to look out for others there…. oh wait, no one is listening to them and the commenters think they’re terrible people and party poopers.
- if she really wanted to try see what alcohol tastes like, have a sip with trusted friends around who’ll look out for you i.e Mike and Abby in this case and NOT at a party where you don’t know most of them and they’re all endorsing under-age drinking.

sure, my view might disagree with what seems to be about 80% of the people here who are condoning Daisy drinking. I just think it’s a really terrible idea for her to drink given she isn’t being at all mature about it and it’s a really bad situation to try drinking for the first time.

also, I’m amazed by how many people think Abbey is controlling, or that if any of their friends said “you can’t” for something like this, that the friend would be a terrible controlling friend. Guess there’s no appreciation for a concerned friend that cares enough to speak up even if they look like the bad guy. Call me a spoilsport, but if I saw a friend about to do something that stupid, I’d call them out on it and try to convince them not to, if they wanted to insist on being an idiot, I’d do my best to make sure nothing bad happened to them and call them an idiot.

At absolute worse maybe her and either Paulo or Abbey get drunk and do something but I *HOPE* it doesn’t end up like that with a surprise pregnancy. It would be nice if it was just silly and light hearted, and maybe they got drunk and talked about how much they missed Lucy or something funny, I’m not asking for drama lol just anticipating it.

But I dunno she could? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, Daisy really could just be an after thought in this chapter, it could just focus on them having fun and Paulo’s complicated relationship with Rachel?

Mm, Abbey being controlling as ever. Not that I condone underage drinking, but Abbey’s been more than a little blatant in the past few chapters that he wants to be in control of Daisy. He flipped his shiz when she was helping Paulo study, he doesn’t like that they’re childhood friends, (because, you know, if all that happened and she still chose Abbey there MUST be SOMETHING going on between her and Paulo -_-) and he speaks FOR her rather than advising her. Good intentions or not, Abbey needs to chill out and take of the Daisy-leash.

This better be funny or sexy. Preferably both.

@Sammy: It sounds more like Daisy just wanted to taste it, not get drunk or even tipsy.

And plenty of people do wait even if others don’t because they’d prefer not to break the law which was made to protect people because alcohol can damage organs (it doesn’t harm the brain when it is fully developed, it stops some kind of signal though which reduces your ability to think reasonably and it returns to normal once all the alcohol is gone), which includes the liver, quite severely when they are still developing. Damaging your liver on purpose is also pretty moronic because it has over 500 functions. And the only way to get a new one is if someone donates part of their liver, as there currently is no way to replicate all the functions of the liver.

I’m going to have to side with Abbey here. While I do believe that advertising on both ends of the spectrum seems to be far-fetched and backwards, considering the situation that Daisy is in it’s a possibility that she might be pressured into alcoholism.

Damn. Mike and the gang are a bunch of wienies. I’d be sucking back the brews like a leech.

For some reason I PREFER Abbey being taller than Mike. He’s just so much more mature and what not.
