GREAT STORY MIKE
FINAL WEEK FOR THE KICKSTARTER GUYS LET’S DO IT
Hmmm, it might the a reason of a chapter about Rachel, what happened to her long ago, and what Paulo means to her, and maybe more………? This is all happening on her birthday party, poor Rach…
Kids, take this lesson: Never drink a lot of alcohol on a party
@Taeshi I loooooove u for making a story, but sadly enough we always have to wait for the next page…. Amazing story!
Selef November 18, 2013, 1:00 PM EST.
You in trouble Mike.
Edit: I wonder what’s going to happen in the next 9 pages.

…I love you but.
I swear I need to stop keeping up to date DAY TO DAY
cause I can’t wait for pages. xD

I barely remember that story but boy was that awkward when you yelled in the middle of class

Welp time for so speed lines to increase the severity of this situation
Baron jiggs November 18, 2013, 1:01 PM EST.
Yesshh, go paulo xD
Dat Paulo November 18, 2013, 1:01 PM EST.
Now Paulo use your words.
OddSoulKeeper November 18, 2013, 1:02 PM EST.
Wait… is it just me, or is everybody angry even if he has not said a thing yet?
Erinaceus November 18, 2013, 1:02 PM EST.
well now the cats out of the bag. I knew Paulo would hit Mike, but the look on everyone’s face. For having no dialog, this page had a lot to say.
josh November 18, 2013, 1:02 PM EST.
What is that?! A pokemon Battle!
Mr-Hero-Bio November 18, 2013, 1:03 PM EST.

Darkk November 18, 2013, 1:03 PM EST.
I knew you would tell the truth Mike
Good job. Very brave of you done
Jonas97face November 18, 2013, 1:03 PM EST.
Mike didn’t deserve that.
TheLazyCharmander November 18, 2013, 1:03 PM EST.
I think he told them the story, but it’s not shown to us. Look at the faces, all the same
Selef November 18, 2013, 1:03 PM EST.
Lol Taeshi i laugh at every one of your comments
Nahuoth November 18, 2013, 1:03 PM EST.
Four panels, no text. With this we do not see if mike biases the story. Very clever Taeshi, not bad.
Zof November 18, 2013, 1:04 PM EST.
@Erinaceus I think this is meant to be Mike telling everyone what he did without wasting too many pages just retelling the story we already know.
Sty November 18, 2013, 1:04 PM EST.
Yes, I think that right now, Mike Haters saw their dream fulfilled.
But, anyways, even if there’s no speech, you can see the feelings on the face of everyone, and they look so bad and dramatic. As usual.
Long story short: Awesome ! I can’t wait to see tommorow’s page !
Rainbow Blur November 18, 2013, 1:05 PM EST.
OH, David. That smile in panel 2…
S.M.I.L.E November 18, 2013, 1:05 PM EST.
Now a Tiger Uppercut!
Mil_Faces November 18, 2013, 1:05 PM EST.
The expressions seen in all of the characters in only 4 panels is priceless. A mixture of disbelief, anger, horror, anxiety, awkwardness, and pain. You’ve made beautiful interpretations out of all of these @Taeshi. Awesome work.
And now here comes the drama bomb.
Dudeler November 18, 2013, 1:05 PM EST.
I was wondering why Paulo was just sitting there. He was taking it all in. Good job, Paulo. You too Mike for telling the truth.
Sono November 18, 2013, 1:05 PM EST.
I REALLY like how you didn’t use words to make Mike explain the situation, and rather explained it through the emotions from the others. I honestly feel bad for Mike at this point; while this situation was inevitable given his involvement in the entire affair, it still is sad to see him have to go through it when he’s already realized what he did was wrong. I’m not saying he should get away scot-free or anything, just that it’s still a rather tragic thing to see.
However, while Abbey and Paulo are absolutely furious, I noticed the others are more shocked and sad than actually angry at Mike. Maybe this gives a ray of hope that they won’t try to ostracize Mike after hearing his story, and realize that he’s already massively regretting his actions. After all, if they ostracize him now, that’d make them no better than he was back in December… but then again, they ARE teenagers, so it’s easy to imagine that they’d not consider that aspect.
Deiser November 18, 2013, 1:06 PM EST.
You told everything…
JayLime November 18, 2013, 1:06 PM EST.
@Zof i think judging by the expressions on their faces (and paulo hitting mike) we can assume he said the truth.
Sty November 18, 2013, 1:07 PM EST.
@JayLime I think that would make them the most likely to forgive him honestly, since it shows that he’s willing to accept his part in all of this drama and doesn’t want to run away.
Deiser November 18, 2013, 1:08 PM EST.
Judging by Abbey’s expression on panel 3, Mike’s going to be in a living hell for the next few chapters.
Rocky November 18, 2013, 1:08 PM EST.
I think it’s a quick time lapse as he tells them what happened, so we don’t have to be treated to a wall of text. My best guesses for what they are reacting to in each panel are:
1. Starts off telling them about either the library or Sandy’s call.
2. He tells them what he said to Lucy. You can tell from everones “WHAT!?” faces. And Rachels rage face.
3. I’m gunna guess he told them about the messages Lucy sent to Sandy while he wasn’t there, or his and Lucy’s talk after the play.
4. BOOM head shot. Not much to say bout that.
Venorik November 18, 2013, 1:09 PM EST.
you know the people justifying paulo hitting mike.
shut up. just shut up. in no way does his actions validate violence even if it is a comic
the attitude of people cheering it on is sickening.
Lance November 18, 2013, 1:10 PM EST.
I’m only wondering, do they also know she is in hospital right now? Or hasn’t he told that part too?
Selef November 18, 2013, 1:11 PM EST.
Wow…. Well…Rachel’s birthday party sure is something else huh?
Love how David is all like “Gotta keep positive! This is all a joke right?” with that grin on his face in the second panel, and then it just slowly dissolves into a look of utter bewilderment.
Justmyopinion November 18, 2013, 1:12 PM EST.
Now that doesn’t seem like a hard punch or if Paulo has his all behind it, Paulo looks like he doesn’t really care about hitting, shouting at or do anything to Mike, it was probably a automatic strike. Guessing he will walk away for now and everyone else will have the turn at Mike.
Chrisd765 November 18, 2013, 1:12 PM EST.
This is one of my favorite pages of the whole comic…. so much is said in these four panels without one word being written, and that last panel…. wow. LOL@BOOM headshot!!
Can’t wait to get my books from the Kickstarter this Xmas… is it too soon to start thinking about book 4??
Bryan November 18, 2013, 1:13 PM EST.
if you look at each frame, you can see Paulo’s ears slowing dropping
bunnyclub258 November 18, 2013, 1:13 PM EST.
Aaaand punch :3
Iti November 18, 2013, 1:15 PM EST.
I don’t think it’s sickening really. It just goes to show that this comic is written well enough that people will cheer for certain characters even if they are making mistakes. Also, I think some people are giving Paulo a small break because he’s completely smashed and will probably regret doing this in later chapters.
Deiser November 18, 2013, 1:15 PM EST.
YES THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT
Ok I’m sorry I just wanted to see where this was going so bAD
Somewhat November 18, 2013, 1:16 PM EST.
Are we supposed to know what was he talking about with something about a history essay? Because I’m utterly confused.
Karrion November 18, 2013, 1:17 PM EST.
I think this page put the whole case perfectly up
EvilKitty3 November 18, 2013, 1:18 PM EST.
its pretty obvious he told them what happened. on the surface, mike and lucy were close so those facial expressions wouldnt have been made unless he told them what happened. we just didnt hear it. im dying for the next update, TAE WHY MUST YOU TORTURE ME CONTINUOUSLY LIKE THIS
also @Karrion read the chapter “December”
Whimsicott November 18, 2013, 1:18 PM EST.
@Taeshi This page was really well done. I love the expressions on their faces. And poor Rachel all this on her birthday party.
Sty November 18, 2013, 1:18 PM EST.
@Karrion, they were writing an essay in the “December” chapter.
Nikary November 18, 2013, 1:19 PM EST.
…..Well Mike is now ****ed.
email@example.com November 18, 2013, 1:20 PM EST.
@Karrion In “December” Mike and Lucy are working together on a history essay which resulted in Mike calling Lucy a parasite.
Sty November 18, 2013, 1:20 PM EST.
The next page will likely have Rachel pulling Paulo off of mike, because he will go overkill with it considering he is in a drunken state
I think mike needed to get a little sence nicked into him, but it will likely be more than just one hit from Paulo, and one hit that is reasonable for the situation based on what was done Paulo’s feelings for Lucy an the fact thier all a bit tipsy
Alfavhunter November 18, 2013, 1:22 PM EST.
@PANCAKES from the previous page:
I think I meant both.
boh... November 18, 2013, 1:24 PM EST.
Why is it that Paulo cannot punch properly
That’s twice he’s punched Mike in so many chapters and both times it looks like he’s prodding him gently with his fist
Shoulders need to be twisted around a bit more
On the other hand, I do like the expressions in this comic, it’s like watching a Monty Python sketch
beep November 18, 2013, 1:25 PM EST.
I love Abbey’s face in the third panel.
OmegaB November 18, 2013, 1:26 PM EST.
Violence solves nothing
Kitmit November 18, 2013, 1:27 PM EST.
@Sty Right, I remembered the argument but didn’t remember they were writing and essay
Karrion November 18, 2013, 1:28 PM EST.
David looks like he doesn’t understand what is going on.
MobileCrusader November 18, 2013, 1:29 PM EST.
YOU HAPPY NOW, MIKE-HATERS??? YOU GOT WHAT YOU WANT. NOW STAHP!
Gate-senpai November 18, 2013, 1:30 PM EST.
*Pulls out sword* STOP HIDING IT FROM US ESPECIALLY SINCE WE SUPPOSEDLY ALREADY KNOW WHAT HAPPENED.
I'll Eat Yourself November 18, 2013, 1:30 PM EST.
The expectations from the fans was spot on. Paulo is now infuriated.
Keyblade Dragon November 18, 2013, 1:32 PM EST.
OMG everyone in the last panel is like WTF PAULO!?
Gate-senpai November 18, 2013, 1:32 PM EST.
Violence is not the answer. Violence is human.
I’m glad Mike fessed up though, it is up to his friends now to decide what happens next now that they know what really happened.
By the way, for those who are still blaming Lucy for the situation, depression is not a segway into right or wrong. It is a condition. This is not to say Mike didn’t suffer throughout the unhealthy relationship he had with her, but again, relationships are a two way street. He enabled it and did indeed contribute to this situation as much as Lucy did. What he did very WRONG however, was enforce her depression to take actions unto herself. It’s a crime, not a guilt trip, to do that to others, despite what she has done in the past to him. Two wrongs do not make a right, as simple as that seems, I can see it is difficult for some readers to grasp Mike’s responsibility even up to this point. Yes, it was Lucy who committed the action, but wounds thats cannot be traced, emotional/mental wounds, sometimes run deeper and stronger than any physical pain. That is Mike’s responsibility and he is finally owning up to the truth.
Sorry, this page just kinda hit home with me. Thank you @Taeshi for creating such a story (even if they’re just fictional cats). Sorry for the rant, it really is just a sad situation…
Lena November 18, 2013, 1:32 PM EST.
I don’t blame Mike for blowing up on Lucy, and it’s something that was a long time coming. All those years of emotional abuse, he snaps and all of a sudden everyone jumps on him?
SeigiRed November 18, 2013, 1:32 PM EST.
Welp, that was expected from Paulo. I wonder what will happen now? Things will never be the same. Guess it’s time to move forward
Alex Sigma November 18, 2013, 1:33 PM EST.
Why David is smirking in the second panel? I hope he doesn’t find the story funny. It shouldn’t be, considering the other guys faces.
SHM November 18, 2013, 1:35 PM EST.
Let the 24hrs of wild speculation as to what Mike actually said begin! Here’s mine:
Panel 1, It Begins: Conversations with Sandy
Panel 2, Shocker: Mike tells them what he actually said to Lucy, i.e. I Hate You, You Are a Parasite, etc..
Panel 3, Tears: he reveals what she did and that she was taken to the hosptial
Panel 4, Mike Interrupted: he was talking to Lily and she said th- *BAM*
This is before I’ve read anyone else’s comments, just had to get my speculations out before that. In short, I think he’ll be honest, maybe with the occasional omission of details, because the part of your brain that makes lies (at least good ones) is one of the first to slow down when introduced to alcohol.
jhornb02 November 18, 2013, 1:36 PM EST.
Sue in last panel: Dammit paulo I wanted to hit him first
Nah, but paulo sure is a bundle of emotions recently. He has been falling deeper and deeper. Screw mike, I wanna know how people will feel about paulo after this!
“DAVID, HOLD ME BACK!”
Sleepingfox November 18, 2013, 1:37 PM EST.
YES! tHANK F***ING GOD!FINALLY!*ahem*I..I..I..I mean…oh nooooo, Mike’s getting punched…
Some Guy November 18, 2013, 1:37 PM EST.
I don’t see anyone jumping on him except Paulo, and probably Abbey. Everyone else looks sad or shocked, not angry.
THANK YOU. You’re the first person who I’ve seen who shares my exact mindset regarding the situation, even including the logic behind why Mike should be held responsible for his actions in December despite Lucy’s treatment of him in the past. It’s also important to note that despite all her harrassment, Lucy never once used Mike’s fears, fears only she would know due to being a close friend, to make him feel worse, something Mike DID do.
It comes off more of a fake smile, based on his reactions later. He’s supposed to be the cheery guy, so he was trying (and failing) to keep up the facade.
Deiser November 18, 2013, 1:40 PM EST.
Even though i love how this page turned out i really would like to know how much he actually said. Just what he said to Lucy or maybe even what happened after that like the text Lucy send to Sandy.
Sty November 18, 2013, 1:41 PM EST.
Well everyone knows what happened now.
starfighter105 November 18, 2013, 1:42 PM EST.
omg, Paulo punched Mike in the face…AGAIN.
Oh yeah, and everyone is emotional. Good luck trying to figure that out.
Blank On Purpose November 18, 2013, 1:42 PM EST.
aaand… I must wait another 23 hours *impatient*
Suzy November 18, 2013, 1:43 PM EST.
May I be the first to say…Drama Bomb!!!
DeathofInk November 18, 2013, 1:43 PM EST.
Ah, as expected. But still, yikes. Don’t know what’s going to happen as of now to Mike, but I kinda hope SOMEONE stays by his side….. aside from Sandy. ‘Cause for whatever reason, I think she’ll stand by Mike, but although its kind of unlikely, I kinda wish someone from the gang stays with him…. even if it IS just to talk from time to time.
Subaru November 18, 2013, 1:43 PM EST.
I guess this “happy hour” turned into… Wait for it… UNhappy hour! YAH GET IT? You know… Because, they are unhappy and… Mike… Oh, screw it… Let’s just punch Mike in the face and be happy! I miss lucy… *insert sad song here*
Lyrix November 18, 2013, 1:45 PM EST.
What great “friends”.
B-man November 18, 2013, 1:46 PM EST.
or we get a synopsis/reaction shot. Come on Taeshi, I love your comic but come on. This is kind of a big bomb to leave at a silent reaction shot. I feel like something like this should have been stretched over 4 days, each page covering one of the 4 reactions you put in here. This feels a bit rushed and a tad run and gun, kind of kills the impact of a big revelation like this. Got nothing but love for ya, but I had to critique this page. A revelation like this deserves, in my opinion, the go big or go home / the all or nothing mentality to writing.
buchanen_neket November 18, 2013, 1:47 PM EST.
I can almost hear “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” in Paulo’s head as his ears drop…
jhornb02 November 18, 2013, 1:47 PM EST.
@buchanen_neket I think this is a great way to get the story out. The faces tell it all, the progression of their emotions as he gets the story out (and of course David starting with an inappropriate one ). Stretching this re-telling over several pages would’ve been too much. Also considering how long it would have to be, it would take away from the big PUNCH finish if it took 4 pages/days to get to it.
It catches moments of the story as it would be remembered: flashes of emotion laid over top of Mike’s narrative, a few fleeting glimpses of awkward glances, looks of shock, and held-back tears before Paulo cuts the ending short.
jhornb02 November 18, 2013, 1:52 PM EST.
I hope Mike’s position is understood by others and that he is not gonna get lynched…
I do hope Paulo’s fist will ache
Tiido November 18, 2013, 1:52 PM EST.
@Lena i really agree with your post. Another thing i always found quite interesting is that Mike fell in love with Lucy after all the time she was violent towards Mike, and i’m really sure she noticed that (well he even admits it in Lucy’s flashback in “Pillow talk”. And i think that when she noticed that Mike was still her best friend and Lover after all she put him through, she just thought it was okay to continue acting that way or didn’t see another way of handling her relationship with Mike. She might even have thought that that was what Mike liked about her.
Sty November 18, 2013, 1:53 PM EST.
David Needs to grow up..
DaveOtow November 18, 2013, 1:57 PM EST.
Alright there’s something I’ve been wanting to say and I’ve read enough commentary here to not want to let this out. Apologies in advance if this ends up being a book-length comment (oops). And if you’re an avid Lucy-hater, you might wanna stop right here. Or maybe not. Up to you.
Let me start by telling you a little about myself. I’m a 19 year old Dude™ who’s dealt with plenty of symptoms of major depression. Not a lot of friends early on, not the most social guy, had a hard time putting faith in people and just generally don’t like people. Heard it all before, right? Not too long ago I had this girlfriend I would’ve given a kidney for, literally. I did anything/everything for her; wrote her songs, corny little poems, all the chocolate (ALL the chocolate) etc, etc. Turns out I was the first of her boyfriends to take her on an actual date. And the first guy she said she loved. Things were going great and eventually we started talking about our future, getting married, even having kids. Despite how far off these plans would be, things were obviously pretty serious. But around this time last year, she and her family had to move, in short, because of financial issues. We, or at least I still tried to make things work, but about two months later she dumped me for a guy she met over the internet that lived even farther away. I can’t say I wasn’t surprised, knowing that she’s been talking to this guy for a long while before the breakup, but that didn’t make it any less painful. But the other guy and the distance wasn’t the only reason; like I said I was dealing with major depression. For example, no matter what I did I never felt good enough for her, much less anything else, had an overall sense of worthlessness, and sometimes for no goddamn reason at all. Feeling hopelessly depressed for no real reason is just the worst feeling, especially because it tends to stir up some self-hatred because of it. The problem was that even though I was feeling better when I had her, I would sometimes unintentionally take it out on her. Nobody’s perfect and I’m far from it. But it’s been long enough and I’ve learned from my mistakes.
I don’t cry too often… not for movies or books or most any other works of fiction; never more then a manly tear or two. I saw ads for BCB all the time and it was always that story I told myself I would read eventually. That day finally came a few weeks ago and I regret waiting this long; I immediately fell in love with the story and read everything from chapter 1-78 in three days, sobbing my eyes out like a newborn.
So why did I bother to tell you my life story and what does it have to do with BCB? Well maybe some it sounds pretty familiar to you readers. It’s not a perfect match up but I find Lucy to be extremely relatable to me, and it’s why I can so easily say that I understand what she’s going through. Maybe that’s why this story has affected me so much. From what I’ve seen and what I can expect, I’ve always sided with Lucy and believe that I will always have a reason to in the future. Now I’m not saying she doesn’t have her flaws; I’ve pointed out mine and hers aren’t too far off.
TBlackfeet November 18, 2013, 1:59 PM EST.
Now take a good look into Lucy’s mind. Remember how she believes nobody understands her but Mike? She’s half right. Simply because of the fact that she never talks about the problems she lived with since preschool, I don’t think even Mike understands her well enough. The first few years are the most important in our lives; it very quickly (and a little too easily) shapes how we interact with others. Not 100% sure on this, but the rejection Lucy got from the other kids may have led her to think “If I try to be nice but nobody will be nice to me, then why try?” Then Mike came along, and being the only friendly person around at the time, she didn’t want to lose him, so she acted accordingly. It doesn’t make sense to us as “normal” people but hey, she was young and didn’t know better, I’m surprised nobody told her to think differently. Now whether Mike does or doesn’t fully understand the way this has conditioned her as a young child, he lets his emotions judge his actions and speak his words, and after putting up with Lucy for over a decade, there’s no way it wouldn’t eventually get to him. Mike had every right to be angry with Lucy, from the physical “abuse” (another complicated subject I won’t get into) to the emotional confusion, among other things, and he was doing the right thing in “December”. He needed to be blunt with her because it’s the only way to break through the stubbornness of human (cat) nature, and past the blindness that love hinders us with. It is how she would learn. And she did, we see this in her text to Sandy. However, by no means were Mike’s actions justified against Lucy’s behavior. Lucy was changing for the better, and Mike’s own stubbornness (and blindness from his love of Sandy) wouldn’t let him see that. He went too far and inevitably crushed her. Lucy is not a bad person and neither is Mike. Lucy is misunderstood, and Mike has his moments. Nobody’s perfect.
I was always rooting for MikexLucy from the beginning and for the longest time was stubborn against the other relationship possibilities. Eventually I opened up to the ideas more but in the end, these two have all the history. For a while I believed too much damage has been done in more than one chapter for Lucy to forgive Mike, but knowing her, she probably still has a place for him in her heart, even now, if ever that possibility arises. And I won’t be satisfied with Mike’s latest guilt trips until there’s an actual apology coming from him, and more than just simply “I’m sorry.” But most of all I’m hoping in the future they both just sit down and have a long talk, apologies coming from both sides.
I really just needed to put this out there because it visibly upsets me to see all the misunderstandings going on in the comments, especially all the hate towards fictional characters in a drama about stupid teenagers being stupid teenagers. Not that what I as a random Dude™ on the internet says matters. I honestly try as hard as I can to stay away from these comments but I guess I just don’t have a very strong will against it, or maybe deep down I enjoy getting ****** off at the people who don’t seem to read the previous chapters, the countless over-analyzed discussions about the time David sent a picture of his dick to Mike (not that there were any), or gettin all philosophical about that time Lucy was being sarcastic about that thing and everyone took it too seriously.
If I have anything else to say, Taeshi and Suitcase: keep doing what you’re doing, BCB is easily one of the best comics I’ve read, and I’m always eagerly waiting for the next page. There’s probably a ****-ton more I could’ve said here but this is already long enough as it is. Sorry this turned out to be a novel-length analysis, and if you actually read all this, jeezus crust go outside.
I’ve said what I needed to say and I won’t be returning (to comment).
Edit: man I am such a loser why did I write this much
@Taeshi This story is wonderful, really it is.
I can relate to Abraham quite a bit on an emotional level, not his past, but emotionally.
I just people don’t completely shun Mike. Even though what he originally said to Lucy was the wrong way to say it, I hope people understand that he overreacted. He might have pushed her over the edge, it really wasn’t his fault. I just hope don’t shun him. I don’t want what happened to Lucy happen to him.
LAEwolves November 18, 2013, 2:00 PM EST.
Daisy is in shock. David is confused. Abbey is upset. Paulo is getting physical. Yay~ ?
Anon-Anon November 18, 2013, 2:03 PM EST.
And thus Paulo hated Mike forever. Sorry, MikexPaulo shippers
I really love how Taeshi told this part. The no dialogue makes it a lot more impactful just getting to see everyone’s reactions, we don’t even see Mike’s face during all of this, which I think is good and would have taken away the impact of everyone else’s reactions.
MissShellGiraffe November 18, 2013, 2:03 PM EST.
Ah David, trying to keep that smile through an awkward conversation. Been there.
steelCOYOTE November 18, 2013, 2:07 PM EST.
Panel 1: Everything that happened prior to his outburst.
Panel 2: His outburst towards Lucy.
Panel 3: When he found out she was at the hospital after a failed attempt of suicide.
Panel 4: Right in the kisser.
Yelikarts November 18, 2013, 2:08 PM EST.
oddly enough that went much better than i expected it to.
King_crimson November 18, 2013, 2:09 PM EST.
I dunno man, this is kind of huge part of the current arc, something that’s bound to have a effect on the characters and people’s outlook on the characters by how they are reacting to the story. I mean as we have it now, all we know is that Paulo hit Mike only hit mike because he hurt Lucy, but then why is Sue looking angrily at Paulo when he hits Mike? If it had been stretched out to get each bit piece by piece we could understand it better because we would have been able to analyze and determine where Sue’s emotional scale was going. Right now it just looks like Sue may have had some sympathy for Mike thus is angry at Paulo for going to far.
Honestly i’m surprised at Sue’s reaction, she was a pretty good friend to Lucy, I’d expect her to be on Paulo’s side, but that may not be the case. Also Paulo’s punch would have been more impactful because we could have seen his reactions to the story. Giving some of the audience a chance to connect to him and his view (trust me many would have connected to his viewpoint).
i’m sorry if you don’t agree with my opinion, but that’s how it feels, it feels too rushed for something big like this. Big revelations deserve a equal chunk of time to bring it out in the story. As the story stands now it feels more like “there, he confessed and Paulo punched him, happy now”
buchanen_neket November 18, 2013, 2:09 PM EST.
I feel like David is one of those characters who are trying desperately to hold a positive face, trying his hardest to look at the bright and sunny side of things. I don’t know whether it’s denial or just trying to be cheery in the face of adversity, but that trait about him is evident. Specifically in that despite the smile, the rest of his face says ‘serious’ and even ‘sad’ to an extent.
A friend of mine is like this as well. Smiles whenever she’s uncomfortable or hurting, even if she doesn’t intend to. People just assume she doesn’t care or even finds what’s going on inappropriately fun, but the truth is almost the exact opposite. Whether David is truly bothered or not is not in question, in my mind. I just wonder what he actually thinks about the situation.
Sidenote: David is still slightly immature and oblivious, don’t get me wrong, I just think that for some people a smile isn’t always a smile.

@buchanen_neket i think Sue might just dislike any violence and wants to settle things different than Mike and Paulo destroying themselves.

Even the TV is watching. What fun! I’m surprised Paulo waited until Mike finished to bop him. We should all follow Paulo’s courteous example of good manners. Lucy would of just kicked his butt on her rampage. Oh, how I wish that would happen. I’m surprised no one is mentioning confession. I mean, I thought people would have exploded in spazing by now.
@Taeshi: You are a master of shortening. I was starting to fear that you would milk the chapter too much.

In hind sight I should probably explain that… From an objective standpoint Mile did a fantastic job, be found the most harmful, lest progressive, most depressing entity, isolated it, gave it a chance to change its nature, then when it failed to Eliminated it. That is the basis of maintaing efficiency in any organization and is a useful skill later in life. So yeah, from an objective standpoint he did incredibly well.

@buchanen_neket We’ve had 79 chapters before this one to get his viewpoint and I think it’s been pretty well covered even in this one, Paulo is in love with Lucy and upon hearing what Mike did, Paulo is ready to place full blame for her disappearance on him and express that as only a drunk, love-sick teenager can, with his fist. some people will sympathize with that and I can certainly understand it myself, but I don’t think these reactions needed to be dragged on, Taeshi did a great job of it already with the expressions on thei faces of those present. From what I know of the characters, here’s their thoughts:
Daisy is shocked at what Mike said and sad about what happened to Lucy as her good friend, but she is mad at Paulo at the end because, after all, Mikie was her first real crush.
Abbey is upset because of how closely Mike’s story reflects his father’s and when he learns that Mike is at least partly responsible, he’s furious. When Paulo makes the first move and hits him, he’s a little taken aback.
Sue is surprised that gentle, sweet Mike could say something like that to Lucy and when it gets really awkward she looks to Amaya for support. Paulo lashes out at Mike and, as someone who has broken up/avoided fights several times in the past Sue is upset.
Amaya is a little harder to gauge because she is so quiet, but she’s listening intently to Mike’s story and is surprised when it is interrupted.
David doesn’t look like he’s 100% paying attention at the beginning but slaps on a slightly awkward smile partway through, only to have it fade as the story gets less funny. He snaps to attention though when his good buddy Paulo springs into action.
Rachel doesn’t even know Mike and Lucy all to well but it looks like she can at least sympathize with how horrible of a story that it is, and she can feel Paulo’s pain a little in panel 3, but she was not expecting him to hit Mike towards the end.
Jessica is a little lost in thought by Panel 3 as Mike is confirming what she may have already suspected from the last page, but gets brought out of her own head when Paulo makes contact.
Extra pages not necessary.

@TBlackfeet I had a similar reaction when I first started reading about a year ago and don’t really have much to say except that I agree with you 100%.
Personally I think it is kind of amazing that this comic can get people so attached to the characters. And if I don’t tend to agree with people who bring out the torches and pitchforks whenever Mike is mentioned, at least it is a reaction that stems from caring about Lucy and what she has been through.
Alfador November 18, 2013, 4:30 PM EST.
I am back again, after a long time keeping silent.
The rants about Lucy/Mike who’s to blame, yada, yada, I will keep my response brief. They are both to blame, absolving one or the other only detracts from how both of them allowed it to spiral out of control. Mike enabled Lucy’s violence and understood her. Lucy, abused it, beat him physically, but after having the revelation of how Mike really felt she began to change her ways. Lucy decided to try and change for the better. Mike, went cold shoulder and pretty much completely cut her off but also fed off of her fears and mentally destroyed her. Both of them were abusive to one another. This has all escalated from well back to when they were children. Both of them have hurt one another in some way or another back and forth and it just kept spinning down until Lucy finally snapped. As tough as she was, she was the one who ended up truly broken. Mike is now stuck with the guilt of her finally snapping and knowing he helped speed it along with his over the top out lash.
They are both to blame, in their own ways. Simple as that.
I am supremely thrilled with the use of silence and instead emphasizing expressions to convey what is happening. You have used it in the past but this one really takes it up to a whole new level. You can see how as the story progresses they all feel sorry for Mike, as he tells them about Sandy and how they all putting him on the spot and her talking to him helped him realize how he was being mistreated. Progressing into how they started out working on the project and began to have fun like old times again. Then the abject horror at his admittance to what he said and did to her on the same night. How he told her they would leave her when he left and that they did not love her. From there they take it all in and begin to feel sick to their stomachs from the information as he admits that that is probably why she tried to commit suicide. Then you can see the rage settling in on Abbey as he takes in what he did to her and it brings out the emotions similar to what happened with his mother. Then the explosion of action as Paulo lets out his pent up rage over it all, as he finally finds out why the girl he loved was seemingly snatched away. The rest only able to stare in absolute shock at the outburst from Paulo.
It’s absolutely amazing and I can not wait to see where this all leads, and if Mike will still have friends after this has all come to light. If not, the cruel twist of irony, that he had threatened Lucy with being alone, and ended up alone himself, will not be something I would say I hadn’t thought of coming his way.
This comic is such an emotional car wreck, it’s gut wrenching and has some really horrible moments, but you can’t seem to tear your eyes away because you keep hoping to see that glimmer of hope that things will get better.
GracefulSerenity November 18, 2013, 4:34 PM EST.
I simply LOVE the progression of this page- ESPECALLY since there are no words. Simply beautiful. I love how at first everyone is shocked except Abbey (being mad) and David (sort of looking awkward and like “hehehehehe…”) then it just gradually intensifies.
Good job Paulo- I almost thought Abbey was going to take the first punch although paulo’s a little punch happy. I guess. i would be too though if someone had destroyed emotionally one of the people I love but still… Lol poor Rachel everyone is drunk, sad, and angry at her party

I was kind of hoping it would be Sue to punch him, I mean it’s obvious she knew Mike had a hand in this, but then again everyone else probably did as well…..But Abbey’s face. ABBEY. The look of anger and disappointment. And David……oh Dave. And in all honesty I love Mike but he (for once) deserved that punch to the face. He really could have handled that situation better. Lucy had problems, but what he said were things you can’t just take back and the following results from it were a disaster. I don’t think any of the gang will turn their back on him but……….. well they’re going to have a lot to say about this that’s for damn sure.

I get what you’re saying and you are right from a certain point of view. However it just feels to me like there are a few pages missing. A shot like this feels better used at the conclusion of a bomb drop. A moment for the characters to digest the information they just received after such a devastating hit. It’s hard for me to explain why a shot works in one situation but not in another. The silent moment shot is best used after the nuke goes off, not during.
buchanen_neket November 18, 2013, 5:09 PM EST.
@TheLazyCharmander: You may be my favourite Pokemon but Mike did kinda deserve a punch in the face. He caused Lucy to enter a dark spiral which she will likely struggle to have control over for the rest of her life, and not only was she suffering from it at usually the happiest time of year, but she was suffering while everyone else was blissfully unaware and enjoying their holidays. And since no one else knew something had even happened, they didn’t bother to check on her often either and no one was able to give her support as a result which could have resulted in her death, and so far it seems like it almost did (still don’t know the real reason as to why she was at the hospital though).
He actually deserves much worse in my own opinion, but deserving something doesn’t make it right to do it and it certainly doesn’t mean that it will help.
Lance: Seriously? Deserving something, doesn’t make it right to do it, but anyone who tears apart someone at their weakest points on purpose and gives them depression as a result DOES deserve at LEAST a punch in the face. I repeat though, it does NOT make it right to any degree to actually do it just because it is what they deserve, but when you are as drunk as Paulo, chances are that you don’t care what the right thing to do is.
Moogle November 18, 2013, 5:12 PM EST.
Hmm… it looks to me like it goes…
Panel 1: Story start
Panel 2: “I hate you” storyline.
Panel 3: Attempted suicide storyline.
Panel 4: Paulo Pawnch.
I love the expressions on all the characters. You can really tell what each individual is thinking on each panel.
ravengal November 18, 2013, 5:14 PM EST.
This is just one big misunderstanding. Paulo was just amused with the great story Mike just told them and wanted to brofist him. Though he doesn’t understand the idea of brofist very well.
No seriously. Everyones expression is rather appropriate, but Paulo… We all know he will be quite ******. Aaaaand what do we get? It’s kind of a let down. Hopefuly we will get more awesome facial expresions in next few pages. Oh what’s gonna happen, what’s gonna happen? Wil the group split? Unlikely. Even Daisy looked like she’s about to barf (which is quite a suprise, since I really thought she’ll support Mike). And seeing Abbeys expression it seems like Paulo beat him to it. What will happen now? Well, I think Mike will have some free time to think about his actions. Think without anyone to disturb him. Yeeeesss…
Are you starting a comment riot again? Because it sure looks like you’re starting a comment riot again. Stop starting comment riots, it makes people cry.
Mike and Lucy were supposed to do it together, but once they were finished Mike said it sucks, rolled it and shoved up Lucy’s ***. Lucy being a prude went to Mexico all butthurt and ****, and no one knew about it, since it’s a big secret. That’s what happened.
Commander_Zero November 18, 2013, 5:17 PM EST.

Paulo’s punch is justified imo, if Mike does not respond with any fighting intention, even he knows that he needed it.
On a side note, this is just speculation, Paulo punched Mike because:
a) Mike is a jerk (well, lately anyway)
b) Mike caused Lucy to be hospitalised (depending if Mike even told them about it, most likely though)
c) (What I really really don’t think is true but is possible) Paulo realises how much Lucy still loves Mike despite what has happened and feels jealous.
Now we wait…. and if anyone replies to this, I have an exam for just these couple of weeks, so don’t expect a reply….maybe….
CuriousGent November 18, 2013, 5:57 PM EST.

@TBlackfeet (Or Dude™) I liked your comment. As a person very close to another Dude who suffered from depression, I think I’ve always been on Lucy’s side because I understand her (especially since I’ve been the “Mike” - although, everything ended up better for us :B).

Alright, way to show us him telling the story without us having to hear him whine! The facial expressions changing as it went on were awesome, and then Paulo’s punch at the end just really sold it for me. This was worth waiting a weekend for!

@buchanen_neket - Ever played a video game and they black-screen to avoid showing the player the cast talking about what happened up to then every time you get a new party member? The silent shots passed time and showed reactions without giving us a big-*** recap that would’ve taken more pages than we have left in the chapter. This is a wonderful way to show him telling it, and we can tell by their reactions that he didn’t sugar-coat it in his favor.
Zone November 18, 2013, 6:11 PM EST.
The reason i recon why they aren’t all doing it, A: Mike was probably on the verge of bursting into tears the whole time, so they know he’s ashamed B: they were angry but as it went on, you see that they soften, except abbey, but he seems to have a real justice complex, and finally C: the look on their faces when Paulo punches him, is one of shock and surprise, they weren’t planning on resorting to violence in this, even Rachel seems horrified that Paulo has resorted to attacking him like that, Daisy and Sue even look angry with Paulo for it, something tells me there’s going to be a feud in the group next page.
omega445 November 18, 2013, 6:30 PM EST.
@Misanthrope - Looking at this in a corporate standpoint is just plain cold and completely overlooks the fact that these are personal relationships and that therefore there is no possible “code” that can be established on them. Mike was in the right to tell Lucy off, but the way he did it was completely overblown. Which makes sense, he’s been through a lot… but the fact that he refused to recognize that before it had caused irreversible damage to all those around him marked him down way low on the morality scale- until now, where he comes out clean, and like Zone said it’s clear that he didn’t sugar-coat it and make it sound like Lucy was at fault for it all. That’s a really hard thing to do, especially when you feel like you’re the victim, so he’s gained plenty of redemption for that.
As of now he’s raised his standing but how he deals with the aftermath will really decide how he will come out of this.
And surprisingly it seems that the entire group has learned a lot from this as well. There’s a turning point in every teen’s life where one event ends up sucking the immaturity right out of their head, and by the looks of it this is it. Perhaps the group won’t be so quick to judge after this event.

SnowyPaint November 18, 2013, 6:59 PM EST.
No, for the last time i’m not starting a riot or flame baiting. I’m a human being with my own opinions. But apparently everybody would rather, pardon the very crude phrasing, ******** the writer. I mean I make one statement on my view of how I feel on how this section is progressing and even hint at ways I could see a page like this working.
But nooooo, apparently if someone doesn’t think Taeshi is the messiah of writing then apparently they’re flaming the comments. I mean look above you, nobody’s jumping on the guys complementing Taeshi’s decision, but the one guy who has an issue with it and “oh my god, Taeshi is the greatest, you know nothing”.
I’m being a tad sarcastic of course but that’s how I feel right now. My comment didn’t need a reply. I didn’t even expect Taeshi to take a second glance at it. She’s the writer and it’s her call on how things are done in the comic. I’m just giving a bit of a critique. The others could have just left it alone. But nope, as such if they want to talk on the subject then i’m more than willing to EXPLAIN (note that’s the reason I keep replying) my view on this scene.
Yes they do do that in games in movies, but the fade to black is always when there is something trivial or irrelevant to the story going on. If it’s relevant to the story the camera, I mean as a for example, did they really need to show the entire walk up the mountain in the flashback in FF7 or could they have just cut to them at the reactor? They chose to show a few extra scenes in the trek because parts were relevant to the story that’s unfolding.
buchanen_neket November 18, 2013, 7:01 PM EST.
@Deiser: Solid assessment, actually .
The first thing I noticed from all of this is the expressions on everyone’s faces. Paulo and Abbey aside, everyone else’s expression ranges fro sadness to incredible concern (Rachel’s expressions are incredibly heart breaking). Hell, even DAVID is looking concerned, and you can tell he’s trying to lighten up the mood.
Mike needed to do this…period. But it’s going to change up the dynamic of the group by a metric ****-ton.

Also: David’s face in panel 2.
Mcturtle November 18, 2013, 7:37 PM EST.
This isn’t the usual Mike we’re dealing with. This is the loads of guilt Mike that thinks anything happening to Lucy is automatically his fault (first time in the entire comic that’s been partially true). As such he’s not going to retaliate, he’s going to let them beat on him because he THINKS he deserves to get his *** kicked.
Now to the rest of the commenters, not you synyen (as this is something I’ve avoided all day because I’ve been distracted in talking direction). You happy, now we’ll probably have two casualties instead of one. So happy you guys got your retaliation that will probably be the death (or near death) of this kid. An extreme, I know, but if he’s that guilty to let a person wail on him then the possibility of him thinking he deserves THAT is probably not a far shot off.
You get it now, why I’ve been so hard up for people to take notice of Mike’s issues? Guilt is another factor that can lead someone to suicide.
buchanen_neket November 18, 2013, 7:38 PM EST.
Iiiiiiiiiiiii… still gotta defend Mike on this one. You might say his reaction was too harsh… but for a person who was constantly beating the snot out of you for trivialities and romantic pipe-dreams… I’d say it wasn’t harsh enough… I mean in real life you wouldn’t be so quick to defend a stalker or an physical abuser would you?

@buchanen_neket hahah you actually think Mike would try kill himself while he still got his beloved Sandy? He’s doing this all for her man. No chance and even if he got beated by Lucy real bad as some claim then this punch shouldn’t even touch him from being so used to it. Unless hes really become a total whiny *****. In fact, hes taking it like a man, hes not a coward since he finaly told the truth, hes being just a temporaly wreck from all the guild that he had to hold secret from everyone until now. Im sure that cept Paulo everyone will forgive him soon or later and things start to go for better. He may be messed up but is not suicidal
EvilKitty3 November 18, 2013, 8:24 PM EST.
You’re looking at the now, you need to be looking 5 moves ahead. What if he decides in his guilt ridden state that he could hurt Sandy the same way he hurt Lucy. What if he begins to wonder if he could get mad at Sandy and blows up at her by accident and hurts her. This could very easily take out his last reason to live as he begins to think suicide is a means of protecting Sandy. Protecting her from himself.
buchanen_neket November 18, 2013, 8:28 PM EST.
I guess that was ment to be a comical relief where she only tried to get info out of him but surely quickly left him alone after that. I don’t think Sue will be abusive again but may tell her opinion about him
EvilKitty3 November 18, 2013, 8:31 PM EST.
we may suspect that when we get actual first signs between them that could wreck their perfect relationship. Lucy is gone from their place and she wont seek Sandy out to do anything about it. We saw how far Mike went to maintain his relationship with Sandy so he wont ruin it that easy. I think we are too far from suspecting any further issues by them for now so I doupt it but then again, id welcome seeing something negative in Mikes and Sandys relationship aside of that shes far away.
EvilKitty3 November 18, 2013, 8:37 PM EST.
You do realize how badly guilt messes with a persons mind right? I mean everyone goes on about depression but those same people don’t consider guilt even though it’s just as bad. It can easily make an extreme like suicide a feasible option. Even in a perfect relationship, hell moreso in a perfect relationship as he’ll not want to cause Sandy any harm and thinking to how easily he can blow up he begins to doubt his ability to control it. Doubt begins to creep in, begins to play with his mind. That little voice begins to whisper “do it, do it, it’s the only way to keep Sandy safe from yourself”. But here’s the kicker, we may never see it, we may see him moping around, depressed, but most commonly (as we’ve already seen) someone who decides suicide never shows it to their loved ones. Mike may not even show it to sandy, we may never even see them having an issue, but the possibility still remains in the deck. It remains in the deck BECAUSE he loves her. To paraphrase the French man (can barely pronounce his name let alone spell it) from the matrix “it’s curious how the pattern for love is so similar to the pattern for insanity.”

I can see things getting worse for mike from here on. He will probably have to endure verbal abuse from every one else. So what if paulo hit mike. Lucy hits way better. Yes the facial expressions show it all. Shock horror sadness hate. Very nice way to show all the feelings here because after all actually showing feelings on faces is way better then having them say how they feel.

Honestly part of me is hoping he does turn around and knock the hell out of Paulo. If only to put my fears to rest, however this is Guilt ridden Mike loaded up with a known depressant only making his guilt worse. So I fear we won’t see Paulo get his, as my grand pappy would say, nuts knocked into the dirt.

Sounds like you speak from experience. So what are you guilty about? Paulo has only hit him twice since Lucy left. Other than that, nobody has been mean to him. Everyone feels guilty about Lucy.

kami November 18, 2013, 9:44 PM EST.
That’s funny because someone else here just jumped my case about giving out personal experiences. Let’s just leave it at my jump from devout Christian to believing in metaphysics as an explanation for the universe wasn’t a quick one. Part of it I did have guilt and doubt about what I was doing in the field. I was in a pretty good relationship at the time (with a girl who was pretty vocal about her hatred of the war and our government’s policy) and that did play into my mind as at the time the line between friend and foe was a bit blurred for me. Such is the worst deal about fighting insurgents.
I’ll leave it at that because I don’t want a certain someone getting their panties in a bunch.

Woot! Finally to the present page, now I can get a good night sleep for the first time in the last few days. Ugh! I’ve spent so much energy fending off friends pressuring me in to watch dumb soap operas on TV only to be ambushed by this comic and now I’m addicted…. ADDICTED I SAY! Which is strange to those who know me. Cute cat comics isn’t something I’ve been known to enjoy. Caught all kinds of crap from friends who catch it on my tablet. Just pull a Lucy with a quick jab and problem solved. Despite my friends’ rumors of emasculation, I have been thoroughly by your comic. I’ll be checking for updates!

That has to be one of the most level-headed responses I’ve ever seen. While I’m enjoying karma biting Mike in the ***, I agree that nobody is perfect. Imperfections are something everyone can relate to and are what draw you into the story.
I can especially empathize most with Paulo. I’ve also experienced someone I care for deeply for to just vanish without a trace. The search for the truth is a painful one, always looking for someone to blame. And the moment you find someone to blame, you lash out viciously. In my case, I found only myself to blame. But lashing out like this shouldn’t be surprising. I’m not saying it’s justified, but it IS understandable
Qsandas November 18, 2013, 10:44 PM EST.
@ kami mike may not be getting all hated on but I’m sure what they all have to say to him will not be good or positive. Mike had a right to flip out but he picked a bad time to do it. They were getting along and having fun then mike turned all SUPER TSUNDERE because what’s her face text.
@ W.E.Smith welcome to the family.

I am going to **** off">******** the entire planet by saying this. I don’t see Mike in the wrong here. AT ALL.
Ever since the December fiasco, Mike has constantly been used as the straw man in every god damned argument, and it is driving me f*cking sick. Not once did I ever look at Mike as the villain in any scenario. In fact, I am going to go as far as to say that he was, and is still the victim in the story.
See, I was just like Mike when I was around the age of 14. I made friends with some kids that, in hindsight, I regretted to this day. See, one of the kids was a girl that knew how to manipulate people with her attractive looks and perky personality. At fist , she wanted to be my girlfriend. Ok, that didn’t seem so bad. But then she started having sex with other boys behind my back. I wasn’t until she attempted suicide over one of her f*ck buddies dying from AIDS that I found out about this. What’s worse was that people tried to put the blame on me for this until one of her “friends” confessed and took the blame. Had it not been for him, I would have probably been in Mike’s shoes for the rest of that year, if not my whole life.
They are referred to as weak because they don’t have the strength to face their problems. Suicide is taking the easy way out. It does not take a strong person to give up. And it does not take a strong person to do something that causes their own death.
I can talk with authority on this as subject because I have known quite a few who killed themselves and I have also attempted suicide more than once myself in the past. And yes, that includes family and friends. It is not an act worth of sympathy, it is the act of a coward who can see nowhere else to run away from their problems.
I have never shown sympathy to ANYONE that has committed suicide, real or fictional. And this isn’t just me. My entire family sees it as a pathetic act of throwing away the one life you have on this planet. Regardless of whether or not you believe in a divine force or an atheist like me. You have to realize that suicide just makes you look weak. I have listened to every single argument regarding suicide victim supporters, and it never holds up.
Too bad, everyone gets depressed. Move on.
“They have lost a loved one.”
There’s a million fish in the sea.
“They suffered a permanent injury and can’t live with it.”
Go watch Forrest Gump.
“He/She was just a kid, you can’t blame a kid!”
You were a sh*tty parent.
Do you get my point? I don’t see mike in the wrong here. I see LUCY in the wrong because not only was she using her sexual appeal to manipulate Paulo, but also because she has pretty much been nothing but a well…. PARASITE to Mike.
The reason I like Mike so much is because I actually WAS him at one point.

Now don’t get me wrong, I totally think Mike telling Lucy how bad she was making him feel was the right thing to do. His execution? Not so much.
He was rash, nasty, and it was a real low blow.
Pretty much everyone in the room’s reaction says do. I don’t blame Paulo for punching Mike in the face, cuz he was SO wrong. He really did love Lucy for who she was. They all really did care about her.
Mike spoke for everyone at the table that night, which wasn’t his place to say. And it wasn’t true. If he just left it at his own personal feelings, Lucy probably would have gotten better. He knows she has trust issues and trusts him the most, so of course she’d believe him.
So… he’s a jerk.

Your sentiments about Mike are incredibly accurate and insightful.
Your sentiments about suicide are - however - arrogant, and I would suggest are a result of shame at your own suicidal attempts. That would be a bit presumptuous of me.
Like you I can also talk with some authority, for identical reasons. Although, quick note, if you use a ‘my whole family’ argument indicating a majority opinion must hold weight, bear in mind the majority of people tend to show sympathy towards suicidal people. Regardless, our respective “credentials” intact, I argue that suicide is not a cowardly act. In fact you touch upon one of my key points where you state that “suicide just makes [the suicidal party] look weak”.
Suicide is the response of a weak person to a situation they are not able to reconcile in their life, not a person who seems weak, but a person who is weak in that situation, and potentially weak in general.
Just as people have reasons to live - and you better hope like hell you have something that makes you get out of bed in the morning, or you’re a walking dead man - there are reasons not worth living for. Each person will have their particular things they will live for, and in turn die for.
Some of these will be insanely low thresholds, for example a person suffering from a mental disorder that distorts how they perceive the world around them may respond to a situation with suicidal urges and actions, even though no mentally stable person would. Therefore, I use the word weak, since suicidal urges more or less litmus test our relative vulnerability to situations, bearing in mind specific situations skew that view.
Thus, suicide is not a cowardly act, but simply a reasoned and logical response to a situation, both of which are often unique to the person in question. So get off your high horse.
Next, there is no such thing as simply throwing a life away. If a person kills themselves you can damn well bet that being selfish and disrespectful of something that is none of your business is wrong. Don’t be a dismissive, self-centered egoist about a life that does not belong to you.
All rights in life spring from two essential ones - the right to death and the right to life. The right to life includes societal agreements not to murder, healthcare, stuff like that. On the other hand, the right to death provides us with the right to drive motorbikes, walk near roads and drink alcohol.
Legally, there are restrictions in both categories on how we may exercise these rights, and the core ‘right to death’ is expressedly illegal in a number of societies. Otherwise it is not uncommon for there to be cultural taboos. Conversely, it is also not uncommon for ritual suicide to be part of a culture, or even legal system.
With all of that in mind, if a person makes an executive decision that they are uninterested in continuing their metaphorical subscription to life, it is potentially a sign of their weakness, but is not an action that holds any inherent strength or weakness. They are making a choice based on factors that you are not experiencing, will never have to live with, and on a fundamental level can never understand.
So sit the **** down and stop being a loud-mouth who thinks his opinions outmatch another person’s rights and personal experiences that leads to their choices. You are acting like a totalitarian idjit, with the logical conclusion of your argument being we should look down on people who drink alcohol, drive cars, or leave their houses.
tl;dr - despite your own suicidal feelings, you have not successfully decided to exercise your ownership of your own life by taking your own - any feeling that got you close enough to consider it was not good enough or bad enough conversely for you to do it, therefore you conclude anybody who goes through with it was wrong because the reasons they had weren’t enough for you.

I have to say all this Mike hate seems a little harsh. I mean he is by no means perfect, but look objectively at the things he has and has not done. He got a girlfriend and is sticking with her, not cheating or looking elsewhere. He did not lead Lucy on, he has maintained that he has a girlfriend the whole time. Lucy did not act on her feelings. Mike handled the situation baddly, true. But basically you are all saying that Mike should have dropped his long term girlfriend for someone else, Ok that someone else was his best friend and they probably would have been perfect for each other. But in real life dropping you partner for someone else makes you a dick, not the other way around.
Gentleman Viking November 19, 2013, 9:39 AM EST.
I hate Mike because he didn’t deal with the situation the way he should have.
It is difficult to deal with a person who does not know their own emotions but it is not necessary to attempt to isolate them from their friends just because you feel a little hurt.
I don’t even WANT a MikexLucy, I think Mike is way too sensitive for Lucy and probably would do better with Sandy anyway
But all I wanted was for Mike to do the right thing.

Blue fox November 19, 2013, 11:01 AM EST.
The situation at this point has remotely little to do with who Mike picked.
I mean of course, Sandy coming back into the picture and cementing thing with Mike again didn’t help Lucy. He didn’t confirm Sandy as his girlfriend till High School, something he actually did because Lucy called him out on his constant denials up to that point.
Yes part of the reason Mike blew up was because Sandy got upset about the constant “Lucy beat me up” stories. But Mike himself was also coming to his own revelations about how he felt about Lucy pushing him about. Lucy had already confessed, and Mike had let that boat sail on. Far as Lucy was concerned, she just wanted to try rebuilding the friendship while the chance was present.
The problem really at the heart of December is that despite Lucy trying to be on best behavior, she still retained negative elements of her behavior towards Mike, who was being meek again until Sandy texted, and he was reminded that “eep, I promised myself and Sandy I wouldn’t take this sort of thing anymore!”
Maybe it’s something Lucy could of worked on more, she was certainly trying to be nicer. But without Mike being able to say “woah, that’s not okay” to her, she might of slipped back into the old habits.
Before Sandy’s text, Lucy was going to honestly try to make amends, even after, despite the pain of the rejection still being kind of fresh, she still attempts to be happy for him. But Mike (anticipating another argument or attack maybe) immediately goes on the offence to defend himself. Nothing Lucy could say or do may of mattered in that moment. She just had to take the barrage of emotional abuse Mike doled out and deal with it somehow.

That’s what I was posting.
Everyone in the friend group shipped MikeXLucy and couldn’t believe that Mike would reject her. Even before the rejection, Sue was working on the script for the play, which in my option, was like a fanfic of MikeXLucy. The group didn’t ‘believe’ in the existence of Sandy for a while. Well they did in the Fall of Freshman year, which is how Paulo got the whole female class of the school to hate mike/ beat him up for being a ‘cheater’ in A New Leaf. But by the end of Spring semester, in Love My Way we can see that Daisy doesn’t even see Sandy as a conflict with her, and just sees Lucy as competition for Mike. It may had a part of him ‘not being allowed to talk out it’ to save Yashy (Lucy) from emotional turmoil, but certainly none of them besides Tess has talked to Mike about his concerns. (Concerns being limited to Lucy’s childhood.)
It’s going to be interesting to see how the group responds to having their bubble popped, yet again.

Darn I can’t find the comment about David but I agree he seems like he just smiles to hide his feelings. Its a response to something that makes him upset/uncomfortable notice how it disappeared once Paulo hit Mike? Anyway at least the truth is out, can’t say I’m shocked at Paulo but I wonder what effect this is going to have on the group as a whole? Will they leave Mike? Will they all rush off to find Lucy (without giving up so easily like before)? Will they ALL go their own separate ways?
