Well that’s just silly.
ABwingz March 10, 2014, 1:01 PM EST.
Hello tiny dog. I am giant cat with roses.
Chrow March 10, 2014, 1:04 PM EST.
So freaking David. Nice to see that Mike’s still got it.
Wait, these are friendship roses, right? So who said it was a girl?
(Paulo: He plays for the other team! 5 guys pop up: wait, really? Mike: No!)
modulusshift March 10, 2014, 1:05 PM EST.
haha that is funny how Mike still got lots of roses
OMG you are going to be at Anime Boston . I will get to meet the creator of my favorite webcomic. I am so excited.
Lily March 10, 2014, 1:05 PM EST.
That cat isn’t really giant. It’s just in the foreground.
modulusshift March 10, 2014, 1:07 PM EST.
Wow…Mikes a girl magnet and David is a LOL magnet!
Jayden March 10, 2014, 1:10 PM EST.
Half of mikes roses are propably from guys xD
Tails March 10, 2014, 1:17 PM EST.
Of course mike still has it. I mean look at him. He has a scarf! He’s ****ing irresistible.
Blue fox March 10, 2014, 1:17 PM EST.
lol poor mike

randomdice March 10, 2014, 1:22 PM EST.
Now… that’s just the delivery…. but what happens when more are delivered personally =P
Probably half of the are from guys just to annoy him, especially comments like that one. He he, what if more of them say things like that… Yo, Mike, you have your pick and yet you have to have the girl that you can’t see that often.
But more likely, there are probably a lot if people that believe Paulo’s commentary of Mike and his “Imiganary” girlfriend =P. That’s what you get when she’s never around =P
Glassman March 10, 2014, 1:27 PM EST.
I new mike would get a bunch of roses. I wonder if Daisy sent him one that said I think about you more then my boyfriend. Or that shower one could be hers.

Chrisd765 March 10, 2014, 2:06 PM EST.
Now that’s just a creepy message to send someone.
Moogle March 10, 2014, 2:09 PM EST.
I’m betting that was from Carson.
ComicGuy March 10, 2014, 2:11 PM EST.
I still don’t understand why we are all meant to like him. Or why the cast does.
Between substituting Lucy with Sandy when she left, general harshness with Daisy who won’t get a clue, and his more recent escapades.
Lucy was right, he is a bit of a jerk more than anything else. Maybe in cat world he’s like Ryan Gosling, but I honestly think he’d need to be drawn differently to make this distinction. Cue Bishie sparkles. Goes to show you, if looks are the only reason we are to admire him, that’s really shallow of his peers. Because he’s pretty much a ******** personality-wise.
Lickit&stickit March 10, 2014, 2:16 PM EST.
Then I’m guessing there’ll be a bunch of roses on Lucy’s old table from her friends. Because Lucy.
boop March 10, 2014, 2:17 PM EST.
If I didn’t know that puffy thing in the first panel was a dog, I’d think it was related to Daisy’s father!
Huh? March 10, 2014, 2:22 PM EST.
David is the one that sent the shower one. Clearly
7 March 10, 2014, 2:34 PM EST.
So THAT’S what Daisy did with that donation of hers…

: …I don’t know if that’s better or worse, but I’m leaning toward worse.
: I like thinking about all my friends showering together!
: OH MY GOD, IT’S WORSE! SO MUCH WORSE!
: Sometimes I get in the shower and pretend they’re in there-

the scary thing is that this convo propably would be canon as hell
Tails March 10, 2014, 3:03 PM EST.
I guess this page is supposed to be funny by mocking Mike with perverted messages but I still cant see why he’s so likeable… Is it really the scarf or that he has a fashion model for a girlfriend? He cant possibly be that popular for sometimes helping with schoolwork like the nerd he is. Could maybe Lucy’s past presence around him build up such popularity? They shouldn’t be breaking the fourth wall and just love him for being one of the main characters. I dunno but this makes me rather ringle my nose and rather chuckle over David only. I guess they are like a army of Daisy clones…. So yeah, nice try but on the wrong character
EvilKitty3 March 10, 2014, 3:04 PM EST.
I wonder how much money the school would make if they auction off Mike?

Well, everybody… Drop the side characters for a moment, why do the main characters like Mike? I think it’s because he’s fundamentally selfless. Yes, he’s been a huge freaking jerk recently, but only really towards Lucy. He’s simply been thoughtless towards everyone else. It’s a symptom of a long distance relationship, it becomes deeply polarizing if it is going to last. Mike is strongly pulled towards Sandy right now, so he’s easily annoyed with the other people, and intentionally yanked away from Lucy.
But think about how destructive this is for him. Without Sandy and now the rest of his friends, he’d be riding on ego, which he really doesn’t have without Sandy pushing him to have it. He doesn’t consider how things hurt him until he’s pushed to care about himself. In short, Sandy’s selfless concern for Mike alone has made that same concern the most important thing in his life with everyone else.
I’m not blaming Sandy, she can’t see what she’s doing, or else she’d flip out and almost break up with Mike for fear of what she’s done to him. I bet that would be the shock that would put Mike back in his place… Sandy is everything to him right now, he’s waiting at the edge of his perch for the chance to fly to her, ignoring everyone else. So if things are going to resolve, Sandy needs to intervene.
I don’t know. I have more to say, but it’s all jumbled up. This is just what I use to make sense of it.
modulusshift March 10, 2014, 4:01 PM EST.
Oh, Mike you adorable thing… DEY THINK OF HIM IN THE DA SHOWA
TheScarletTailedFox March 10, 2014, 4:08 PM EST.
Wow. For Mike, it must be Valentine’s Day ALL over again!
Good luck trying to fend ‘em off, Mikey!
DylanC March 10, 2014, 4:23 PM EST.
Sadly i have to disagree with you, Mike has developed from being the “nice boy” into being a uncareing jerk that is hiding behind a “nice boy” faccade. He has gotten so used to be called “a always nice boy” that he thought that everything that he does is good and that he is right with it and he doesn´t realize how heavy he is hurting the ones around him with his carelessness and prejustice, especially when he is in “Sandy-Love-Mode”. (at least until the Lucy-Hospital thing happened).
Tails March 10, 2014, 4:34 PM EST.
Are people still arguing about mike? I thought we moved past that a long time ago Maybe it’s just me, but people get way too passionate about this boy.
Lokiallen March 10, 2014, 5:14 PM EST.
I think of you when I am throwing up, I mean wait a minute.
Blank On Purpose March 10, 2014, 5:37 PM EST.
@Tails : really? An uncaring jerk? Really? UNCARING??
It seems to me that you have forgotten:
- He broke down crying after realizing what had become of Lucy
- After seeing Paulo crying, he offered him comfort (earning himself a “Get off, fruitcake!”)
- He broke down crying during the party because he regretted what he’d done
He might not have realized what he was doing in the heat of the moment, or directly afterwards, but now he has. And he evidently regrets it enormously. He definitely cares about his friends; hell, he even cares about Lucy. HE was the one who stayed behind to confront Jordan and find out what happened to her. Not Daisy, not Sue, not Paulo. Mike.
@Lickit&stickit : Allow me to refute a couple of your points:
«substituting Lucy with Sandy when she left…»: he admitted that he shouldn’t have done this, that it was unfair to Lucy, and he apologized to her: http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c15/p14.html
«…general harshness with Daisy who won’t get a clue…»: the only time Mike was harsh towards Daisy was at the carnival, and with reason. He tried to be nice to her, but she kept pushing, so he pushed back. And even then, he apologized: http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c41/p2.html
«…and his more recent escapades.» You mean with Lucy? See above: he’s paid his dues for that.
People like Mike because he is a nice guy. He (generally) treats everybody well. He is also polite, selfless, positive, outgoing, smart, and good at sports: pretty much every girl’s dream. He’s made mistakes, but so does everyone, and he tries to mend them.
I think that everyone should stop hating on Mike, because really, he does not deserve that anymore.
…I just spent 10 minutes arguing with people on the internet about how they feel about a fictional character. WHOOPS

Mr-Hero-Bio March 10, 2014, 5:43 PM EST.
Phillip March 10, 2014, 5:44 PM EST.
I really don’t think he cares about his image except for when it throws unwanted girls at him, or crosses some part of him he considers his honor (aka, how he treats Sandy). Point in fact, he doesn’t care at all about how anyone thinks about him right now, or else he’d let it affect him how ****** everyone is at him over Lucy, even though they aren’t openly showing it. He’s basically retracted into a shell that only Sandy could easily coax him out of. Else it’ll have to be shattered for the story to progress.
modulusshift March 10, 2014, 5:52 PM EST.
I really hope you’re right…but he hasn’t really come around, else he wouldn’t stop until he was sure she was okay. He’s still resentful, and he’s relying on Sandy to think it’s okay that he’s not doing anything.
modulusshift March 10, 2014, 5:53 PM EST.
I find it really funny that the first thing I thought upon seeing this is that Daisy sent them all. Nervous about sending Abbey a rose, but not caring at all about sending some to Mike now that she’s free.

No, Mike. No one knows you have a girlfriend because she’s a phone.

He did not care at all about what he has done to Lucy until Sandy made him aware of it. (funnily enough she was the one who indirectly caused it) He even has nearly thrown a table when Sandy just MENTIONED that Lucy has texted her, BEFORE she even could explain what Lucy has written her and even after that he even said that it “maybe would be better if she died” -even in just a joking way that was clearly really ****** of him. Also, he did not want to apologize to Lucy because he has regretted it, but just because Sandy wanted him to do it. Even after the Hospital he still thought for a bit that it was not his fault until his subconscious has hit him with a metaphorical sledgehammer.
Tails March 10, 2014, 6:15 PM EST.
mike is lucky to always have options… must be nice to be so loved and lusted after by everyone he meets.
some people know nothing about such things, and know only hatred and dejection.
he should be glad for his blessing, and for the fact that he does not live a cursed existence.
Thanatos March 10, 2014, 6:16 PM EST.
I don’t quite agree. I think he has come around, maybe he just feels powerless.
In any case, he isn’t doing any worse than any of the other characters. No one has gone looking for Lucy yet.
Sambo March 10, 2014, 6:21 PM EST.
Everybody loves Mr.playboy mike…everybody.
lov/hate/hurt March 10, 2014, 6:23 PM EST.
Yeah he propably has built a imaginairy shell around his feelings, so that no one can get near him (even sandy propably has her problems with that, but not as many as the others).
Tails March 10, 2014, 6:24 PM EST.
I don’t think Sandy really made him aware of what he’d done. He just kinda accepted to try to talk to Lucy, but “only for you”. He didn’t really make any effort. I’ll concur, at that point in time he really was quite self-obsessed.
However, like you said, after the visit to the hospital, he got hit with a metaphorical sledgehammer (i LIKE that expression!) and snapped out of it, and realized what he had done, and ended up crying his heart out over it, to the point of accepting Paulo’s punch to his face. Now, I believe he has redeemed himself by showing regret for his actions, and by CARING about her fate.
Sambo March 10, 2014, 6:29 PM EST.
I guess we all agree that a “metaphorical sledgehammer” was involved, and it was an awesome turn of phrase.

Oh GOD Tails. We finally found something to agree upon. *hug*
Our similar confusion on why the hell everyone in the comic (main cast and sides) likes Mike when really we’ve been given no so such indication that he actually is a nice guy.
See, here’s my deal. Mike literally disproves being polite, selfless, and positive by the way he handled all of those situations. In part they were created because he was selfish.
Given Sandy’s influence has made a massive negative impact on his willingness to be social with his friends, think of his interactions at Rachel’s party and new years, he doesn’t ever get involved enough to care about their lives or feelings past showing up.
Because he doesn’t actually care about anyone but Sandy. When is the last time we’ve seen Mike involved in the feelings of his friends? Or their struggles? Past when he realized what he inflicted on Lucy, he’s never gotten involved in anything that mattered to anyone.
I don’t think he actually has ever BEEN a nice guy.
As for the other stuff “smart, and good at sports”, well those “positive traits” also apply to some of the douchiest people I’ve ever met.
The former points matter more, and frankly I’ve only ever heard the cast parrot that he is nice/selfless/positive with no examples of when or how. Past his and Lucy’s routine of sticking their necks to save each other (which they mutally do and often owe each other for) He really has never been selfless past these shared saving part of his friendship with Lucy.
I won’t feel for Mike until he apologizes to Lucy. Or at least sends her a letter. Obviously that would require him actually caring enough for action. Or finding Lucy or her whereabouts to apologize. Which he won’t ever do because he isn’t actually a nice-guy. It’s just his facade.
Lickit&stickit March 10, 2014, 8:03 PM EST.
It’s okay, Mike. I think of Rachel in the shower. Maybe I should send her a friendship flower.
Shiloh March 10, 2014, 8:13 PM EST.
Caring doesn’t set things right, actions do.
Same can be said about praying, pointless feelgood gesture that leads nowhere.
Otherwise we wouldn’t have those guilt tripping adverts showing starving African children, if a happy though alone kept them fed.
Mike’s only chance for redeeming himself is when he tells the adults (Lucy’s parents and in-situ his parents) the fact that he’s the main culprit on how she ended up like this, and what he exactly did.
After all, he did pretty much the most selfish thing imaginable when the decided to literally tear Lucy’s self esteem asunder, so only them most selfless thing can set it right, and that is taking full responsibility from all fronts.
The repercussions will most likely be harsh, but hey, so was he.
Blaznikt March 10, 2014, 8:15 PM EST.
we should mark this day red in the calendar and make a big party
Tails March 10, 2014, 8:19 PM EST.
Nice thoughts Blaznikt.
I refuse to the the main cast let me think that Mike is nice/selfless/wonderful, when I’ve seen no such evidence past the way him and Lucy looked out for eachother when times got tough. When I think of a self-less or nice person, I think that they treat everyone this way. Not just reserved for their love-interest.
Of course they are going to be on their best behavior with a love interest. Everyone tries to impress a love-interest.
When we really go at it, we should bring up this topic so we can at least agree on something by the end of our banter.
Lickit&stickit March 10, 2014, 8:22 PM EST.
“”Given Sandy’s influence has made a massive negative impact on his willingness to be social with his friends, think of his interactions at Rachel’s party and new years, he doesn’t ever get involved enough to care about their lives or feelings past showing up.””
You might actually be onto something here.
Which in his case means that Mike is a clear-cut case of someone ruining what they have because they obsess with something they want but currently can’t get.
Just like Daisy, oh the irony…

“he should be glad for his blessing, and for the fact that he does not live a cursed existence.”
mupped March 10, 2014, 8:50 PM EST.
Here’s a couple things you should consider, though:
Even since Volume 2, we almost never see Mike unless he’s interacting with Lucy or Sandy. But there are a few times: at Tess’ christmas party and new year party, we actually do see him interacting with people: mainly Sue, Amaya, Daisy, and Abbey (I don’t think we should take into account Rachel’s party, since they were all drunk ). I don’t think that Sandy has “made a massive negative impact on his willingness to be social with his friends”, as you say.
Okay, so maybe he doesn’t get involved in his friends’ struggles. But the only struggles that don’t involve Mike directly that we’ve seen are Paulo’s love life and Abbey’s past. But is Daisy concerned about Paulo? Is Paulo worried about Abbey (okay, bad example)? Have you ever seen Sue get involved in any of this? No. Neither has Mike. Probably because Paulo and Abbey kept it to themselves (except Abbey with Daisy, but that’s different). Does this mean Mike and Sue are bad people? No.
Another reason you haven’t really seen Mike be friendly with people is that such interactions don’t move the plot forwards. If we just had chapters of Mike being nice all the time, it’d get boring If you want evidence that Mike is nice to people, check out “Starting Over”. Specifically here: http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c47.9/ p12.html
I’ll admit that Mike really should apologize to Lucy, but I don’t know how he’d go about doing that. When he tried to approach Lucy’s family, he got driven away: first by Lily, then by Jordan. Besides, none of the other members of the cast have gone looking for her. That doesn’t mean they’re bad friends, they’re just confused teenagers. They don’t know what to do.
Sambo March 10, 2014, 8:52 PM EST.
@Lickit&stickit: I feel pretty much all of those flowers are going to be from random crushes in the school, both male and female, who actually never experience the bad side of Mike. Those people will have only seen his friendly behaviour or not noticed his bad behaviour.
Moogle March 10, 2014, 8:54 PM EST.
Okay, you do have a point, feelings don’t solve problems. But they do mean something.
If someone really regrets something to the point of crying about it, and has the courage to reveal it to his friends, they deserve some slack. Besides, like I said to Lickit&stickit, he was pushed away twice: by Jordan, then Lily. If anything, he’s tried harder than the rest of the cast to find Lucy. But they’re teenagers, for crying out loud.
@Lickit&stickit : my bad, I meant Jordan then Lily in my previous comment, not the other way around
Sambo March 10, 2014, 8:58 PM EST.
“I don’t think we should take into account Rachel’s party, since they were all drunk”
Drunk people are horrible liars, and often even have a tendency of telling the truth unprovoked, So that’s actually what should ESPECIALLY be taken into account.
“I’ll admit that Mike really should apologize to Lucy, but I don’t know how he’d go about doing that. When he tried to approach Lucy’s family, he got driven away: first by Lily, then by Jordan. Besides, none of the other members of the cast have gone looking for her. That doesn’t mean they’re bad friends, they’re just confused teenagers. They don’t know what to do.”
He could man up and take his blame and punishment accordingly by telling Lucy’s parents (telephone, letter, smoke signals, morse code, carrier pigeon), but this is Mike we’re talking about, only person he wouldn’t take the easy route with is Sandy, and the current situation makes their relationship a lost cause from the get-go.
Asiuen March 10, 2014, 8:58 PM EST.
I like Mike but even after reading this entire series twice, I still don’t understand this attraction girls seem to have for him. Besides Sandy (his first love) and Lucy (the constant childhood friend/bully/love? in his life) and Daisy I guess…. I mean come on if they knew the drama cloud that follows that boy around they would avoid him like the spanish flu. I mean he’s a good guy. They’re all good kids. But the mess they cause from a few spoken words (and a whole lot of unspoken words)…I kind of feel like Jazzy, I’m okay with a drama free year.
Tealjoy March 10, 2014, 9:02 PM EST.
When I said to disregard the party, I mean how much he interacts with his other friends. Not what he was actually saying.
Sambo March 10, 2014, 9:03 PM EST.
yes we should indeed
Ohhhhhh you guys might really be on something with that o.o
December could be a good proof of that, remember?
Mike started to get along with Lucy again exactly until he got that message from Sandy, which gave him a flashback of Sandy saying that she doesn´t like Lucy and in his overly sandy-loving mind only one thing was propably in his head after that: “Sandy hates Lucy, so i have to hate her too and also have to get her out of my life instantly so that sandy doesn´t have to meet her!”, just like a switch that was pressed. (But that happened rather often when anything from Sandy comes to him, he forgets the things and people around him and is in some kind of sandy-trance-but that is not sandys direct fault)
Tails March 10, 2014, 9:09 PM EST.
The, “But they are teenagers!” strikes again! Going to start keeping a counter. This is usually the last stitch effort to pacify certain characters when it is blatantly obvious that they are not being very nice to their peers.
It amazes me how often this comes up as a passable excuse. I’m a youth, therefore inherently rude/stupid/not supposed to be responsible. Teens ought to be insulted. They are almost adults by this point. Legally it’s 18. 3 years doesn’t suddenly make them into adults. They were almost there anyway. Most of the learning is about done except for the nitty gritty details. A somewhat functional person should already almost be there.
Lickit&stickit March 10, 2014, 9:11 PM EST.
What’s that? We’re hating on mike? mike is so scared of losing sandy he is getting paranoid over nothing.
Blue fox March 10, 2014, 9:18 PM EST.
“When I said to disregard the party, I mean how much he interacts with his other friends. Not what he was actually saying.”
You are failing at realizing that being drunk dulls the mental inhibitors in the brain, making people more likely to say or do what they’ve always wanted to, but for various reasons didn’t.
So it is still very much valid, or do I have to start smacking you with scientific journals regarding research on alcohol’s effect on said mental inhibitors?

I like the change
Tails March 10, 2014, 9:21 PM EST.
I’m telling you, unless Sandy is involved, Mike literally just shows up to be present. Not to participate. For a fun example:
See Mike here being blatantly rude to the host Tess at the door of the party she cared to invite him to. He had seen Sandy barely two chapters ago. It’s also barely by the end that he interupts his convo with friends to read a text from Sandy.
And he flat out was not going to participate in Rachel’s party until he accidentally got drunk on his first drink. I’m positive it was more the alcohol that got him to forget about Sandy long enough to reconnect with his friends.
Lickit&stickit March 10, 2014, 9:24 PM EST.
Oh that’s it, I hope that for various reasons his connection to Sandy is cut, solely because then he’ll be forced to pay attention to his surroundings including the people around him.
Either he’ll snap and be a hostile ******* thus leading to everyone abandoning him and maybe even downright avoiding him, or he finally realizes how much of a complete dickwad he’s been.
Either way, it’ll be good for him, and also hopefully open his eyes on how important friends really are, and how easy it is to lose them.
Yeah, I know Sandy will be a casualty in that, but here’s no other way Mike will learn, he’s THAT dense.
Blaznikt March 10, 2014, 9:37 PM EST.
@Lickit&stickit : I’m 17, I wouldn’t know how to handle the situation, I probably would’ve done the same as Mike (regarding telling people, not destroying Lucy). Also, if you don’t drink and you’re at a drunkfest, you’re not going to engage your friends in conversation. Besides, by bringing up this point, you are putting Mike on the same field as Abbey. Is HE a jerk?
I don’t agree with your conclusions for your other examples, but I don’t suppose it’s worth fighting over.
Sambo March 10, 2014, 9:51 PM EST.

Blue fox March 10, 2014, 9:52 PM EST.
Trust me, you have A LOT to learn.
Also sounds like you’ve never been at a real party, since you claim people are not socializing there if they’re in different stages of intoxication, not to mention never been the designated driver at a party.
It gives you lots of juicy information, hoo boy.
Thirdly, you’re grossly oversimplifying in order to attack Lickit&stickit’s argument, but by doing so you’ve shown that you literally don’t know what you’re talking about.

You would be right in saying that I have not been at a party where people get drunk, but I dislike your use of the expression “a REAL party”. Refer to above.
Sambo March 10, 2014, 10:14 PM EST.
Do not want. Lucy deserves better than a rebound. Though if that happened I hope BOTH girls dump Mike flat. Sandy initially and Lucy when he tries to substitute her.
No I meant that Mike would have done exactly what he did at Tess’s party and showed up only to ignore his friends as usual in favor of Sandy. Not that he was a jerk to refuse alcohol with Abbey or that he needed to be drinking too. I meant the alcohol was most likely the only reason Sandy was forgotten so he could socialize.
Abbey isn’t like Mike because drunk or not, he always is depicted spending time with his friends. Despite the shenanigans, and general disapproval of the gang drinking, he sits with them to happily listen in.
Also, notice whenever Mike is with his friends, he is often clicking away on his phone. To the point his friends make fun of him in an attempt to bring him back to reality. This is also why they joke about Sandy being imaginary, because like it or not, she’s not there with Mike, but he forgoes major time to bond with people that are there. Even his friends seem to find it unhealthy.
Also, sorry for @coated’s remark but, I don’t think that was meant to insult. But if you think that drunk people can’t engage fascinating conversation or socialize well with non drinkers, you might have inexperience with alcohol. (Which is okay because you admitted you are not of legal age like some of us.)
Drunk gossip is the BEST gossip.

Honestly, what you are doing right now IS rude, especially your last comment towards Sambo.
Also, many teens explore stuff like alcohol way before they can legally get it, just for your info
And if you think that only parties with a lot of alcohol involved would be “real” parties, then i have news for you: THEY ARE NOT MORE REAL THAN PARTIES WITHOUT ALCOHOL!
And i have to partly agree with Sambo, not every drunk person on a party likes to socialize (as i have expirienced in several occasions, for instance i am one of those who do not really sociallize while being drunk and instead i am getting rather quiet and thoughtful). But it´s also right that you can hear a lot of interesting gossip from the ones who sociallize more.
“Because its life experience you gain by exploring newfound freedom of being a legal adult and thus discussion regarding that should be reserved to those with ample amounts of experience in that regard.”
I have to disagree with that too, inexpierienced people should not be left out of the discussion, because they can learn a lot from the expierienced.

@ Lickit&stickit the sweet cry’s of mike being rejected by both girls that loved him. Mmmmmm here’s hoping How wonderful that would be. I would not expect them to get right together. That is going to take some time. They have to build there friendship back up first. Mike has some explaining to do after he told that big lie in December.
I hope sue and amaya get some friendship roses. They deserve some. Mike can’t even appreciate all those 5 dollar roses. There’s like 50 or 60 bucks there and he’s just whining. The only reason I’m rude is because of people pretending to be a expert on subjects they neither know anything about, or even have any experience with.

He’s not really the kind of person I’d want as a friend, and he certianly has done some dickish things…
But really, he always seems to be facing such crushing pressure about his relationships (even if its just pressure he has created in his own mind). His need to remain ‘pure’ for Sandy leads him to view the world (when it comes to other people) with a certain amount of suspicion and paranoia…
As for the amount of girls ‘interested’ in him, he may just be feeling like a pretty piece of meet, like a woman who is constantly catcalled. Not everyone appreciated that kind of attention.

Personally, the experience deal is so relative as my peers have taught me here.
You can feel really strongly in direct opposition to someone else, but I think we all have to remember to try to be nice about it. Even if the opposition comes from a place where nothing in our world works that way.
You have to suspend belief. Also, I do plan on buying some merchandise, but I hadn’t gotten around to it since I’m poor and finishing my last year of college.

@Lickit&stickit Oh, he’s an ***,, and has done and said some impulsive and very hurtful and thoughtless things, but Lucy isn’t a perfect angel either. Mike tends to be rather kind most days, when drama isn’t stressing him out, and it’s been shown that he’s a nice guy who cares for his friends. With how things are going, of course he’s going to be irritable. People are asses, man. They can and will be awful. It’s just part of the character.
Quarter March 11, 2014, 10:21 PM EST.
Thanks to @Tails and @Jonas97face for sticking up for me You guys are truly cool people.
I’ll admit that Mike is often seen on his phone, but at this point, I think we’ll just have to agree to disagree. Personally, I think that Sandy is not hindering his interactions with others, that he does spend plenty of time with his friends, even if it isn’t shown. Also, I think that since Sandy is his girlfriend, he naturally would seek to spend lots of time with her. However, this does not necessarily mean he puts aside his friends for it.
If you’d like to pursue our debate, I could give you some examples of times that I think show that Mike does indeed spend time with his friends, but I don’t think it’ll lead anywhere. After all, a masterpiece is recognized by the numerous different views that people can have regarding it.
Thanks for the conversation!
P.S.: a while back, when I was saying how Mike was good at sports, smart, etc…. You were asking why people liked him, I was giving some reasons even if they don’t always apply to nice people (remember these girls? http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c36/p2.html )

KK March 12, 2014, 12:27 AM EST.
No problem! I agree with you, but at the same time I also don’t like when readers are expected to assume major character traits. (Outside example: Harry Potter was admired in his story, but he had done good deeds to back up this sort of admiration.)
Normally what makes the story more real, is when the character has deeds that back up the given character traits, be they good or bad.
I respect the writing, but especially with Mike, he’s never been depicted being that selfless or nice. Often I feel that I am expected to appreciate him by the cast’s standards instead of how he actually acts in the comic. I’m not going to assume that all kinds of proof of him being nice happen off camera, because for the most part this is opposite of how he acts in the main story.
If Mike’s apparent “niceness” was that important to the characters, I expect it to be obvious in the story, visually or mentioned. Key traits of the main cast are to be present in the story, or they don’t exist to the readers.
Lucy on the other hand is portrayed more as a bit of a bitch by her peers from her pushy streak, when in reality you can always find her caring about her friends, or risking her neck to stand up for them were necessary.
The entire school is wrong about these two. Maybe this was Taeshi’s intention to show how ignorant high schools are.
This is also why everyone was very upset with Mike. When it all boils down to it, Mike is always there for Sandy, but not his friends. Lucy always cared about the struggles of her friends and often gave good advice, abeit sometimes tough-love approach.
Lickit&stickit March 12, 2014, 12:30 AM EST.
As a side note, @Sambo, I noticed the next pages of that link involved Mike helping Daisy as she fell after getting hit by Paulo.
I think it is important to at least recognize that these are not really what I see as examples of him being selfless. Had Mike stood there watching her drown, I would have found him to be the worst type of person.
Because it is not selfless or hard to physically help someone when you are obviously capable as a swimmer and in no danger in a public pool.
Acts that I see more evident to selfless would be that Mike saved Lucy at the cliff. But considering she saved his life over that alley-way, almost died trying to grab him in the river (both which were caused by Mike being stupid), I felt that he helped more because he felt he owed this to her. So I tend to disregard these incidents with Lucy because they are very equal to the point of obligation for both of them.
Outside of these events, Mike is not depicted as selfless anywhere else. And when you look at the context and history of the situations, Mike owed Lucy when she’d always risked her safety for him, while he owed it to Daisy to be a decent Samaritan in a situation causing him no harm.
Selfless includes self-sacrifice as the norm to others that may or may not pay you the same kindness. Nice has a lot to do with respecting other’s feelings. My beef is that the comic is missing Mike showing these traits. Especially as of recently in the comic.
Lickit&stickit March 12, 2014, 12:53 AM EST.
I think David needs to know the difference between “friend” and “unhealthy infatuation”
$adiq March 12, 2014, 1:21 AM EST.
He’s only caring and nice around Sandy, otherwise it is almost as if he is downright apathetic.
Lucy on he other hand has trust issues that manifested in at-times violent behavior in order to shield her weakness, which Mike ironically flawlessly attacked for critical hit in “December”.
And to make it even more ironic, it was Mike behavior as a kid that made it as bad as it is (flat out avoiding her without giving any reason, and then viewing her as a substitute for Sandy, although he didn’t “start” it)
But otherwise Lucy has been shown to actually care for others, although at times in a weird good-cop bad-cop way.
A big & good ol’ reality check would do Mike some good, he has only received the tip of the iceberg of one so far.
Preferably one that shows that if he doesn’t even care for what he has (friends), then he doesn’t deserve nor will get what he wants (Sandy).

I’m about to be brutal, and I don’t really give a ****. I actually cringe while reading this comic now, despising almost every character and every meaningless, petty romantic interest it involves. Once I cared. I wish the comic had grown up along with all of the older readers, but maybe it’s here and still running as a testament to that special special time in our lives when dramatics like this were relevant. Oh wait. I forgot this comic is so balls to the walls angsty that not even the all mighty alter of pig blood and holy he-said she-said that is high school can even compare to this utter atrocity. God this series has really gone down the drain, I just can’t believe it! Can not one ****ing person just like one other person for FIVE CHAPTER? I know some people are like this but they’re ****s BUT EVERY CHARACTER? AT LEAST TWO ROMANTIC INTERESTS? This isn’t even a play off the breakfast club with a quirky group of characters anymore like some rag tag band of brothers. It’s turned into a life-sucking, ‘romance?’ ******** group of ‘friends’. Can I type the world UNHEALTHY. As many times as I need to, to get my point across? NO! And it’s not even the kind of unhealthy that’s normal and amusing. What really cinched it is Paulo and Rachel for me. What the ever loving ****. Who next? Sue? Daisy again? Lucy’s clone? Why do I care? Why would it matter at this point now that’s he’s **** over every relationship he’s had. Is this entertaining? After the fifth or so time this still amuses people? What motivation does a character who ‘falls in love/lust’ with almost every one who’s nice to him, give me when he talks about the girl he ‘really likes?’ Nothing matters at all, no consequences at all- at least none that matter. I’ve lost absolutely all emotional resonance in any action Paulo does or any respect for any of these characters when they’re all almost the same-Paulo being the biggest disappointment. Whoops we slept together and now you’re set up to be my security blanket/new love interest? Like… Paulo. Paulo why. I can’t believe I actually used to like some of these characters. As soon as sex entered the mix I just can’t even believe how unrealistic the entire plot’s gotten (If you can even call it that! It’s just chapter after chapter of ****ing up and whining about it and then repeating that mistake over and over!) If any little **** starts barking at me professing the ingenious writing and portrayal of ‘realistic young adult characters struggling with their own sexuality’ I’m going to assume you’re twelve and you look like you were spat out of a Tim Burton film’s *** hole or in fact have never walked outside and met young people- wait! I take that back! any DECENT young people. Because people like this exist, oh yes and they are immature and. genuinely unlikable, horrifically plagued by the ‘I’m special’ disease and completely. ****ing. self-involved. If you wanted to write a story, that passed the fun drama line about four hundred miles ago and is still dragging the carcass of three unsuspecting woodland creatures behind itself in tattered furry strips shouting “Look at me, look at me!” in a sad, sick, self-aggrandizing way- I give you not only the oscar. But the double oscar. It has two heads and both of them are crying.

This art style feels like the perfect balance of the realism she tried having since early Vol 2 and the cartoonish but clearly defined proportions and lines of Vol 1 I’ve always had a soft spot for. And @Taeshi is only going to get better. I can’t wait!

Hmm don´t really know about that, i have the feeling that this current art style only helps some of the characters shine (mostly Daisy, Mike and Rachel) while it makes other characters look rather weird ( especially paulo, David and Abbey). Also, i personally have the feeling lke they partly look way younger and smaller than they actually are.

AFAIK there is (or was) something about the “pets” being outphased.
And the reason Lily told Mike to back off were more or less because Lucy was such a mental mess at that time that one wrong word or badly formulated sentence from Mike would’ve made it all so much more worse.
Not to mention Mike only knew he screwed up, but he still doesn’t grasp the magnitude of neither how much he screwed up or the consequences of it.

Yeah, many of the characters end up looking like middle schoolers even when they’re high school seniors, except David, he literally ends up looking like a brown ***** with a face due to the shape of his head and ears.
And then there’s the problem with he mouth of many characters blending in with their general color, so it more looks like a accidental color blob than a actual mouth.
Lani and Daisy is a good example of how it can blend in unless you hold your screen at weird angles.

You raise very good points, and you’ve convinced me that Mike is probably less selfless than I’d said at first. However, I’d like to end with a single example: Buddy System (http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c72/p1.html) seems to be an example of Mike’s inherent cheerfulness and friendliness, despite Paulo usually being a jerk towards him (http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c55/p29.html). I still think (and hope) that Mike is generally a nice guy.
Also, as a side note, although Lucy is definitely capable of being caring, she is kind of a b*tch most of the time, especially towards strangers, like on this page: http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c47.9/ p18.html . I think most outsiders have good reason to think she is always that way, though her closer friends should know better.
Regardless of how we perceive Mike, I think we can agree that it would be great to see him perform some nice and/or selfless acts later on in the comic.
