The answer is that you can defeat yourself, but only when you are divided. And being divided against yourself is a bad state to be in, suggesting either insanity or a terrible moral dilemma. One part of you will triumph, forever changing who you are. If you assume otherwise, how would you account for the change people undergo after making such a decision?

Physical trauma and emotional breakdowns can result, both directly and indirectly. After such a struggle, it will take quite a while to recover, but you will have, in effect, defeated yourself.
