I think nihilism is often seen as depressing because some people view it as having nothing in life, or after life. Some people don’t do the right thing, simply because it is the right thing, they do it because they want to go to Heaven and out of Hell. If you take the idea of Heaven and Hell away, people won’t have the drive to do right and wrong anymore.
Nihilism, to some, means having nothing in life. No God, no Heaven, no Hell, you just live your very short life, then die.
This is, of course, an incorrect idea, but its the idea most people go with.
I, myself, am a proud Catholic and believe in Heaven. Not that I’ll be let in, more likely than not, but I’m just throwing that info out there.

were your parents catholic?
were you raised catholic?
if so, im sorry for you, not because of the religion, but because for most people the answer is yes to both and it is sad when so much free will is taken from someone by their parents.

When I have children, I am not raising them to be part of a religion. I cannot imagine a child being part of a religion just like I cannot imagine one to be part of a political party. They are just too young to make an informed decision.
As for nihilism, I do not view it as a depressing thing. I can see that for some people that it can be very liberating. The thought that it is depressing is about as misinformed as cult members being idiotic babbling idiots.

Yes. Yes.
Honestly, I don’t care that badly. Its not like being Catholic is a bad thing. I’m fine with the choice. Besides, I chose it in the end. Its my choice to believe in it, or not to, not my parents. I don’t really have regrets about it, just like how my brothers have Buddhist beliefs, despite being in a Catholic family. My parents don’t force the idea into them, they accept their choice.
Only cultist that are from Hollywood are like that.

I no longer identify with Catholicism. It left a bad taste in my mouth after a while. You know what my parents did when I told them? They ignored the fact. As if it never happened. I can’t even bring it up. They just ignore it as if it didn’t happen. And thus I am forced to church every Sunday.
Comment ID #103041
actually, being raised a certain religion will remove the choice for most people, though they will still think it remains.

I see the world in a very simple way. I stay out of politics and most religious ideas, and stay with gist of it. America is meant to be made by people voting, religion is about doing the right thing, and you should be open to people’s ideas and beliefs.
If this was who I was meant to be, predetermined, I’m cool with that. All in all, I think I’m an okay guy, save for the flings of depression, moments of insanity, and drops of depravity, but those are my choices.
I have to say, the idea of me living in a predetermined world isn’t that bad. As long as I don’t know what’s been predetermined, its basically like I have control. I accept your ideas of disliking a predetermined life, but as for me, I’m okay with it.

I was raised by a simple creed: “I don’t give a shit about your opinions now shut up I’m watching television.”
Now get me a beer.
Comment ID #103057
@king, america is supposed to involve people voting, but originally only congressmen were elected by the people. no-one else was.
also, ithings may be predetermined, still figuring that out. if they are, and some god wants me to handle north korea, i will kill myself to give people free will.
@jerk, NO! YOU GET ME A CHOCOLATE MILK!!!! >:[

I was built on another creed. “Nothing is true; everything is permitted.”
Wait….what?
@ kazi
Like I said. Simplicity is my thing. All I care about is being happy, doing the right thing, and my friends. I don’t get wrapped up in politics or religious disputes like that. I like making jokes about how I don’t even know who our president is.
But of course I do! Malik is a great president, right?

Meh. I like God. He’s like a father to me…..Wait…..Oh. Right.
You can have your opinion of God, but as long as you aren’t trying to beat it into my ear or being annoying with it, I will politely accept it.

If you relax and let Jesus into your life I won’t have to force him in.

People would just kill each other over the color of their skin, their smells, for wearing Ed Hardy (acceptable), etc.

His heart was in the right place. All sentient life, to me, is made up of evil and good, unless that life is mentally ill.
@ kazi
I respect all forms of life. If someone is gay, then let them be gay! Besides, lesbians are awesome! Especially hot ones…..(Growls)
Comment ID #103085
good. i didnt want to have to add you the list of to-beidiot-brandeds

I have no problem with gays or lesbians. There is a possibility I am bisexual, but for now I’m completely straight.
I may only be bisexual because of….well…. Bridget and Hideyoshi. But come on! All guys are gay for those two!
Comment ID #103090
im just attracted to feminity.
i wish i was bi though. then i would have an even stronger argument against religious retards.

The five dumbest ideologies, in no particular order:
Scientology
Islam
Atheism (evangelical)
Catholicism
Baptism
Nihilism isn’t on the list just because it seems a little too juvenile to be taken seriously.
Comment ID #103096
lol.
but really, all Christianity instead of Catholicism, Hindu, Judaism and Buddhism are forgotten
Comment ID #103098
I’ve always thought that religion is something old people cling to so that they can die thinking that all their unaccomplished dreams and all the years they wasted living paycheck to paycheck in their sad, miserable 9 to 5 world will payoff more than what a life of self-satisfaction and adventure would have. I have a friend who’s constantly being vilified because she doesn’t want to go on dates or get married or have kids… and her parents are starting to say things to the flavor of her being a bad person because she doesn’t want to push screaming watermelons out of her vagina. At the same time they ridicule her for wanting to make comics for a living “which she’s pretty damn awesome at when she wants to be” because they don’t see it as being a good goal to set for your lifetime.
Maybe I’m being too judgemental because I have close friends who are always having their own opinions being trampled on by more religious and older people trying to tell them not to march to their own beat because pumping out babies and being a paper pusher for an accounting firm is something to be proud of.
Comment ID #103099
…..Nope. Don’t know what’s going on here. I’m just the dumb, happy guy who believes human beings are good, despite their negative traits.
Comment ID #103104
That seems contradictory to the concept of original sin. You are a lapsed Catholic.
Comment ID #103105
…..What does lapsed mean?
Comment ID #103106
It means you need more wafers and alcohol. I would like some too.
Comment ID #103109
…What’s a wafer? Wait, are wafers those cookie things that are shaped like rectangles?
Comment ID #103110
I attended a Catholic church for a year when I was going to marry into a Catholic family. They wouldn’t let me touch it because they didn’t want the actual physical body of Christ in my heathen bastard mouth.
Comment ID #103111
OOOOH! Those are wafers! I’ve had those before.
Although they sound like jerks. I’m sorry to hear about that….Jerk. (I mean that as your name, I am not insulting you)
Comment ID #103113
my parents raised me Catholic and when i was old enough to ask them why (age 5) i was told because we are right and our neighbors are catholic and thats why! i decided then i had enough of that shit and since then have been a non practiceing buddhist/thor worshiper/Hanuman devotee
also i dont agree with alot of the churches ideas to me the pope is just an old man in a silly hat

@Goldwulf, right on. thor is more badass anyway C:
Comment ID #103116
I’m just kidding. The were pretty polite to me and I’d always bow out of communion because I wasn’t confirmed, and their Atheist daughter who went through the motions every Sunday with them was the real cunt. The rest of the family was like a second family to me at the time.
Comment ID #103120
Oh. That’s nice to hear. I hope the daughter got her just dessert, and I hope the family is doing well.
Should we stop posting? I think we’re getting rather off topic. Now we see to simply be discussing religion.

Ah, what an odd collection of heathens, atheists, screwballs, madcap philosophers, and regular people whose hearts are in the right place we have here.
[serious]
I feel that it doesn’t matter so much what creed you choose to profess (if any), as much as what you actually do.
Actions speaking louder than words and all that.
[/serious]
So, do we have any Scientologists here to round out this circus?
Comment ID #103196
Ooh! Which one am I? Is it heathens? Regular people? Or madcap? Neither? All?
Comment ID #103199
You a closet Scientologist.

Sweet! I’m like Tom Cruise then! Suck it, non-Tom Cruises!
Comment ID #103208
Tom Cruise being a subset of closet scientologists does not make closet scientists a subset of Tom Cruise.
You are not Tom Cruise.
Get over your logical fallacies and this poor attempt at a joke.

why is it considered depressing?
i dont think it is.
it’s better than having no free will because things are predetermined.
nihilism is happy.
