Well, technically everyone lives in a free country. Anyone is free to try and do whatever the hell they want. You just have to deal with the consequences of said freedom. Sometimes the consequence is minimal, having someone listen to you. Sometimes the consequence is the death penalty.

Australia once had a Prime Minister who’s biggest claim to fame was that he won a huge drinking contest.
We also had a fist fight break out in Parliament over a pot hole in a road somewhere.

Who can correctly answer this question:
Why was Bill Clinton impeached?

Perjury

Thank God you didn’t say ‘having an affair.’ You will not believe how many times I have bashed my head against a wall when confronted with that answer.
Comment ID #10883
far as I know “having an affair” is frowned upon, but not illiegal

I forgive him for the perjury. For making BBW acceptable… not so much. =/

I just take solace in the fact that it’s not as bad as the Japanese government… It’s like all their parliament meetings have a 5 drink minimum >

I don’t know if anyone here knows about the new Parliament elections in the UK next month. But I was watching the predictions of the Final Parliament Debate yesterday, and I’m pretty worried about Cameron, who’s really likely to be the new Prime Minister. He wants to put a new cap to immigrants like in the US, which, is technically illegal by the defacto EU constitution. But the bastard is descendant of royalty so he could get his way after all…
Comment ID #11625
As far as I understand it, UK isn’t 100% in the EU. I mean, they haven’t changed their currency to the Euro as far as I know. Wouldn’t that mean they aren’t technically bound by the EU constitution? Then again, I don’t pay as much attention to the politics ‘across the pond’ as I probably should. What do I know?

I say Clegg and the LibDems all the way! Of course I’m American so who cares about my opinon, is there anyone from the U.K. here? Maybe shed some light for us?

@Erebus
The UK may not be in the Eurozone, but they are as bound as any other country in the EU. In fact they are the second or third strongest country in the EU. So essentially they make the EU acts along with Germany and France. The problem with the Constitution is that it’s defacto (virtually existent only. Coincidentally the UK constitution is the exact same). And there’s loop holes which allow countries to pick which acts they like or not. That’s how neutrality hasn’t been affected in the Republic of Ireland for example.
The problem with Cameron is that he ticks all the boxes of an ideal Tory candidate. Descendant of Royalty (King William IV), his family has financial ties all over the Commonwealth. He was an Etonian and graduated with first class honours in PPE at Oxford. Not only that, he was a Bullington (the elite among the elite in British society. They all turn into politicians, bank owners, etc). And no one knows his policies exactly. Especially now when Labour is at it’s lowest in decades, he can get away with murder.

I can’t tell whether I should support the Lib Dems or Labour. I’m a hard-left-winger. Who’s closer to the Bolshevik ideal?
Comment ID #12162
I’d say Labour, but Brown has been a disaster from the word go…
Comment ID #12546
The Lib Dems may have what seem more Bolshevik policies, but they are too Robin hood like. Still, with Brown representing Labour, I’d vote Clegg if I could…

A General politics thread? Can’t go into too much detail on individual parties, and such… particularity seeing I’d bore you all with Canadian politics hahaha. For that matter I am but a mere mortal, and anything I say, or do might be completely wrong… just something I’ve got to admit before posting in any Politics thread. But… I’ll toss out an idea or two none the less.
If there is one thing I DISLIKE seeing is… these… associations people start to make which don’t really make sense when you really look at them. In a nut shell it’s assuming because the party supports ONE thing, everything else the party supports is somehow connected to it. That one feeds into the other as one great evil or good.
Here’s an example
The Right tends to be rather ‘pro’ capitalism. Which is all fine, and dandy. But many people seem to believe BECAUSE of this Capitalism promotes war (because the Right like that too) and destroys the environment…. neither of which is “really” true. At the very least it’s no more Pro-War, or Pro-Enviro then any other economic system, as both things are social issues that can be decided upon separately.

Anyhoo, here in Ohio we got our midterm elections coming up on Tuesday. I need to do a lot of research before then. All I know is we got a used-car magnate going up for state congress, and the libraries need more money. Oh, and we were supposed to get casinos, but people keep whining about it.
oh, and @BBQ-Flavored Jerk, I had to do my best not to break out laughing at the Family Guy ref. Thanks.

I like Gordon Brown. I think he’s honest and sensible. Even if he wasn’t, though, I think every UKer should vote Labour in order to prevent any measure of Tory influence on your politics.

Would someone like to explain to an ignorant American what Labour, Tory, and Lib Dem are?
Comment ID #12745
Well, I would, if I cared enough to actually pay attention.
Lib Dem means Liberal and democrat, though.

I assumed as much, but what makes them different from the other two?

No Idea.

Erebus: The Labour party is like the Democrats, the Conservative party (nicknamed Tories) is like the Republicans, and Lib Dem is a weird third party which I find hard to quantify. They’re kind of like the Greens or something (but maybe not as left-wing.)

Honest politicians are dead politicians eg. JFK. But yeah, I have a huge distaste for Cameron. The problem is if that if he wins, it’ll influence how ROI will mimic the UK politics. That means that Enda Kanny will become the next Irish Prime Minister. And he wants to refuse work permits to immigrants and repatriate us…

Erebus, because I’m a progressive\liberal\left-winger. He’s kind of the opposite side.

On a slightly odd note; in India, they have found a Fakir that claims to have lived 80 years without food or water. They have taken him in to the central hospital and have been keeping under watch. The Indian Military have confined him to his room to decipher his secret to train a new breed of soldier for the Republic of India. So far the Fakir has not asked for food or a drop of water…
