First of all, maybe this is a topic that has already been discussed, and if it is, I’m sorry.

Its actually about this. Its hard to know if whatever you want to post has already been posted.
Mr SuitCase, would it be possible for the first page of the forum to be sorted by categories (Like the ones we already have),
and in each of these categories, the topics to be sorted by order of last post? (like this front page is right now)

Of course, there’s also the chance that this is already done and I am not seeing things clearly. (would that be the case, I beg you forgiveness, and let me crawl back, never to come out again in embarrassment).

Ahem. *looking frantically if there’s other topic about this*

How would this help, though? You’d still get hundreds of results for each category, and itd be unclear whether people post in the right category anyway,

Well, one advantage of sorting threads by category is that you can quickly skim only those categories that interest you.

My suggestion would be to implement an actual search feature for the forum. Currently I use Ctrl+F (which only searches a page at a time) and Google (which relies on Googlebots regularly crawling the forum).

Though if we’re going to get into complex stuff like that, and depending on other factors (such as how susceptible this forum is to being broken), you might want to consider forum software specifically designed for the purpose, e.g. phpBB 3.

Well, many forums go like that, I just thought of throwing out ideas =D
just as examples:
http://shoryuken.com/forum/ ->for fighting games, well, games in general.
http://www.qtforum.org/index.html -> for qt programming
http://forums.sonicretro.org/ -> sonic forum
http://forum.theinternetforum.net/ -> got no idea. Just browsed forum on google.

And, ahn, if there was search field that went through the topic’s names, that’d help ^_^”

Well, that would help not get overwhelmed by the, not hundreds, but thousands of topics, many saying the same… And the categories don’t have to be too strict, too…

Of course, I don’t mean to be disrespectful or anything, just trying to help.

Wacko, I think the ctrl-f solution works reasonably well for now. I might put a Google search box there, I’d rather not code it all myself. But I don’t know how useful search really would be.

The thing is, people post duplicate topics on all forums. The ability to do a really easy and thorough search doesn’t often affect people’s behaviour, and it’s why many forums are filled with “DON’T DUPLICATE STUFF!” reminders. And even if you do try and search, it’s hard to figure out the right terms to search with, and sometimes it’s hard to interpret thread titles.

So I see this all of limited value in posting dupe topics.

You’re right about that. People will often start a new (duplicate) topic if they don’t see it within the first few results of the topic index. One option might be to create a sticky thread at the top which links to the topics most frequently brought up by newcomers (favourite characters, favourite pairings, etc.)

I actually use the search feature in other forums on a fairly regular basis. It helps me to wade through reams and reams of posts to find the specific info that I’m looking for. Then again, as you mention, you do kind of have to know what you’re doing, what keywords to look for, wildcards, and so on. So maybe such a feature wouldn’t help other people as much.

well…
i think it would be nice if i could see older topics without seeing all the comments on the pages…

also,the name of the person should be above what he’s written…
this is just confuseing.

… just a thought…

At the very least I think searching for duplicate threads would be easier if there were some sorting process. But I’m not bothered by the current filter system so this is really just a lukewarm subject to me since I don’t start anything often anyway.
