I must’ve been reading it and a post of yours talking about your locale at the same time and got the two mixed up. I am rather glad you have no idea what I’m talking about.

I’m American by nationality but my bloodline is 31/32 German and 1/32 Iroquois native American.

According to my uncle’s research into our family tree, my ancestors were of the first to emigrate from Germany as Quakers under religious persecution from the mandates to unify religion in the dutch territories, apparently we sacrificed a veritable fortune to get here as well, since some of our ancestors were vassals.

the 1/32 Iroquois comes from one of my great great grandmothers being 100% Iroquois, so imagine the shock my purely German family underwent when she showed up at the wedding ;D

California, USA. I can trace my ancestry to the original colonies, so I’ve given up recording my ancestor’s nationalities.

Notice how when asked about which country they are from, all americans actually answer abot their STATE and ocasionally their ethnicity? What is this, some type of hidden nation-wide feeling of shame? Though, of course, that could be justified…

@Lyucs: I’m terribly sorry for your recently decided doom. My only advice is to get out as fast as you can. That’s what I did.

@ nameless: Texas! First image that’d come to the head would be some crazy dude from texas wearing a cowboy hat who can’t place mexico on the world map! That’s what all the USA is like, right? Hehehehehe.

First thing to my head is a map of the united states. And I’d bet that if you asked 20 texans where mexico is they’d tell you right.

@HB: Actuallly I saw a piece of research some time back where 45% of american high school students couldn’t even place the USA on a world map. more than 60% couldn’t place mexico and canada. 95% couldn’t place Iraq and afghanistan.

Also, chill mate, I’m just making fun :P

Lyucs November 1, 2010, 7:05 PM EST.

Comment ID #116429

@Lyucs: It didn’t feel right to say I’m “American” when that naturally means a lot of things. Like almost every country in the world, you’re rarely made up of just one nationality. Being part of the melting pot, especially in cities that had historically high immigration rates, usually means people come from some interesting backgrounds so it’s fun to hear about them. n___n; unfortunately, America was still a pretty new thing when my ancestors came over, so we were well entrenched in Pennsylvania by the time everyone else got here. Otherwise, it is very likely I would’ve been much less of a pureblood.

Senpai November 1, 2010, 9:01 PM EST.

Comment ID #116858

Actually, you can only have more than one nationality if you manage to get a passport for another country. You can have mixed ETHNICITIES, but most of the time only one or two nationalities. Also, as a general rule, someone’s place of birth and where they live tell more about who they are than their ethnicities do.
From what I understand, the US is a bit of an exception as it isn’t truly a “melting pot” of people from all over the world, but more of a mixed salad -> Several things mixed together, but you can still pick out and separate the ingredients into their groups if you want to. In Brazil, for comparison’s sake, people from different places married and had children much more frequently, resulting in a population which is mostly brown, with neither african, european nor asian ancestors being easily traced. Maybe that’s why no Brazilian says the state or city when asked where they’re from. The same is true here in NZ, though 90% plus of immigrants and decendants are British and hugely outnumber the native Maori decendant poplation.

And just because I feel chatty:
Of course the US = Texas stereotype is unfair (though funny!), but the same is true of anywhere. It’s not like all Kiwis are sheepshaggers (most of the population has already been urban for decades), Australians don’t fight crocodiles and wear those wierd cork hats on a daily basis and I’ve never seen anyone in Brazil wear fruit on their head. Still, Ozzies are ozzies, kiwis are kiwis and brazucas are brazucas. But americans can be californian, new yorkers, alaskan, texan……
