So I’ve got these two friends who are dating. Actually, I should say WERE dating. Until about an hour ago. Now, normally when this happens, lines are drawn and friends choose sides. In the past, it has always been an easy choice. Now, however, I face a small dilemma. I am equally good friends with both parties involved. I feel like I’m floundering. How do you choose one friend over another? In my experience, middle ground isn’t really an option. Help?

Tel them that they’re both idiots for making their friends choose between them and let them work it out.

Failing that, have nothing to do with either of them for a while.

What country are you in?

US. It hasn’t gotten to the point where they are making me choose yet, but it will come. It always does.

Then Preemptively strike before they make you do so. Make it clear about where you stand so they know too.

Bang ‘em both. I’m serious. Last time this happened to me, I only banged the girl and I’m still paying for that mess.

I’m with Jeff on this one, state your position early and stand your (middle) ground.

I get the feeling erebus is a girl, BBQ.

I fail to see that as a problem, Jeff.

Neither do I BBQ, I was just pointing that out. :)

…..I’m a guy. Glad to know I come across as effeminate. Just what a guy needs to boost his ego…

*pats Erebus on the back* I feel your pain no worries.

Personally dude? Your best bet is to do nothing. Hang out with either when present, make clear of your intent of remaining friends with both, but don’t be too aggressive about. Don’t assume they’re going to force you to choose until they actually do so. I mean for heavens sake, it’s only been an hour or so: for all you know they might be kissy face with each other by the morning.

But yeah bottom line just wait in the bunkers, and hope for the all clear siren.

Bribri May 2, 2010, 5:34 AM EST.

Unfortunately, that adds disturbing perspective to things. Crap. Internet people think I’m a girl.

That is a topic all of its own though. Stand the middle ground? I’ve never happened upon a case where that ended well.

Erebus May 2, 2010, 5:36 AM EST.

Comment ID #12773

You really shouldn’t pick sides if you don’t have to. Regardless of what you think about it, it’s most-certainly a choice, and they have to accept it. I mean it’s entirely plausible to just kind of balance between two pals and stuff, you just gotta be careful about talking to the other person.

I’ve had these kinds of dramas so many times and yeah choosing can be a huge pain in the ass, they gotta understand though. Just because they’re broken up doesn’t mean everyone else has to break up.

I don’t know, just see what happens. You don’t have to choose now, but if someone is being really unreasonable to you I suppose it’ll get easier?

I find it strange that the middle ground has been so inhospitable for you before, Erebus.

What happened?

Jeff in Aus May 2, 2010, 5:59 AM EST.

Comment ID #12787

Both sides disowned me. Was not fun.

Erebus May 2, 2010, 6:01 AM EST.

Comment ID #12788

Suck.

How’d you go from middle ground to everyones enemy?

Jeff in Aus May 2, 2010, 6:02 AM EST.

Comment ID #12791

Neither side considered me middle ground. I was the friend of the enemy to both sides. You know the saying, the enemy of my enemy is my friend? Well the friend of my enemy is my enemy.

Because they’re both emotional and retarded enough (however temporarily) to feel entitled to his support. Am I right or what?

More or less.

Pfft, I hate situations like that, you always end up being the bad guy no matter what you do.

Unless you nip it in the bud.

Don’t take their shit. Man up and tell them what they’re doing, or cut them out.

I’d refuse to take sides. If it comes to the worst, lock the two of them in a room until they work out their problems. It worked for me twice, it should work again.

Gabriel Kaxbe May 2, 2010, 6:24 AM EST.

Comment ID #12841

@Taeshi We were ignoring them. Now I don’t know if we can. Thanks for shifting my brief stint in the spotlight to Ace and whf.

@Jerk Not that easy. I work with one of them, and the other and I seem to randomly stumble upon each other with abnormal frequency.

Erebus May 2, 2010, 6:25 AM EST.

Comment ID #12842

@ Gabe: Eh, I’m not so big on the locked room school of thought. Some things just can’t be fixed.

Jeff in Aus May 2, 2010, 6:26 AM EST.

Comment ID #12843

Right, BUT if they’re both your friends AND they give two shits about anyone but themselves, they should at least know what they’re doing to you. If they both disowned you, at least you get to keep some degree of self-respect.

BBQ-Flavored Jerk May 2, 2010, 6:26 AM EST.

Mmmm. .

BBQ’s got a good point there. It ain’t always the best idea to go down with a sinking ship.

By loosing the only friends I have inside a 15 minute driving radius?

Erebus May 2, 2010, 6:29 AM EST.

Comment ID #12849

@Jeff: Well, it helps if there is a mediator there to help them realize how they’re not only ruining their friendship, but also their friends’ friendships.

Friend Ships… I just imagined tons of ships colliding.

I know. It’s a bad habit of mine to find flaws in arguments.

Right now it’s fairly quiet. I just hope it doesn’t escalate to badly.

Erebus May 2, 2010, 6:34 AM EST.

Comment ID #12862

Jeff’s right. But you’re going to have to decide how desperate you are to keep these friends and, judging from the way they treat you, how much you’re willing to concede.

BBQ-Flavored Jerk May 2, 2010, 6:34 AM EST.

Comment ID #12863

well, just try and make the best you can out of it, that’s all I can really say.

Jeff in Aus May 2, 2010, 6:34 AM EST.

Comment ID #12864

This may not be the best of ideas, but both need a stern talking too. Preferably together. Get it through their heads that they are acting like idiots and are destroying something very valuable.
