suggestions for my film “festival”

Comment ID #127757

hi everybody, im new at this forum, so first i introduce myself. Im JPEspinoza. 19 yrs old. 1st years of college. found this webcomic at the “octopus pie” ads (another great webcomic). the plot is quite interesing, dramatic as a latin american soap opera. I was just thinking how i could “break the ice” at forum, and i just remebered my project for vacations: a film festival… You see, my college mates and friends are a bit… ignorant about movies. but i need a hand with the choice of titles, maybe if you , ppl, can help me choose good titles per genre, you could help me to make my festival, and maybe you could get a few suggestions about what to watch this weekend ^^

this is the list i’ve made per genre:
horror/suspence:
Rosemary’s Baby
Evil Dead
Event Horizon
Terror of Dracula (1950’s)
Friday the 13th
Se7en

Sci-fi (i really need help at this…)
Brazil
Blade runner
Matrix

Animated:
Persepolis
Akira
Watership Down
Memories
Yellow Submarine

Hitchcock-Kubrick special:
Vertigo
Psycho
Rear window
Dr. Strangelove
Spartacus

replace some, add new ones, or maybe a new category … plz help me its difficult :(

You can combine Kubrick and sci-fi with 2001: A Space Odyssey and, as a bonus, sync up the ending to the song “Echoes” by Pink Floyd. The moment the last chapter screen comes up (“Jupiter and Beyond” ), turn on the uncut version of the song from the album “Meddle” and it syncs to the entire rest of the movie.

Under “Animated” I would also suggest “Graves of the Fireflies”. That is a very powerful movie.

You are lacking a “Comedy” section. May I suggest:
Super Troopers
Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
The Waterboy
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
The Austin Powers Series
Death at a Funeral (the original, not the crap Chris Rock version where he replaced all the characters with black people.)

Others may be able to add more to the list. I cannot think of anything off the top of my head right now.

As for other categories, an “Action” category may be nice. May I suggest:

Kick Ass
G.I. Joe
Live Free or Die Trying
Iron Man
The James Bond Series

If you’re inviting some chicas, you may want a “Romance/Drama” category. Some good ones that I enjoyed are:

Slumdog Millionaire
(500) Days of Summer
The Joneses (but it’s kinda more of a dark comedy)
Precious
Freedom Writers
50 First Dates
An Education

I’m sure some other people will have more suggestions for other categories and moveis,.

Throw Penelope under Romance if you decide to do it.

And Bad Taste is a wonderfully hilarious sci-fi/comedy title staring Peter Jackson of LotR fame.

Also, Donnie Darko is a good Suspense/ Sci-fi one…

And Star Trek is a good Sci-Fi.

Niiiceeeee this “flim* festival” is going to rock
*flim, not film

a few answers…
Jerk: when you hear in a conversation “kubrick”, “sci-fi” or both, the space odyssey its obviously going to show up. the problem we have with that movies is… we just cant decide how to enjoy the full “space odyssey experience” … sober? drunk? on drugs?. And btw, thanks to your commentary on Pink Floyd, we’ve decided to sync the dark side with the Wizard of Oz! yay :D

JHawk: never heard of that movie, i just saw a trailer and it looks interesing. but its not going to animated. im gonna put it in son-to-be-category named war and peace with Gandhi, Hotel Rwanda and Waltz with Bashir. thx xd

Goldwulf : it looked like inception meets the cell (im not proud of knowing the cell) maybe it wont be accepted by the other members of the council but ill take a look a it!

Gabo : how i could forget comedy? am i a sad person for that? probably.
Edgar Wright is one hell of a director, at least shaun of the dead and hot fuzz are definetly on my list. im not sure about scott, mainly cuz’ some of my group are not gamers. i just lost faith in adam sandler… you watch happy feet once (which is not that bad)… you’ve seen most of his movies and Frank Oz’ death at funeral is superb.

Leave a comment: bad taste rules. im not putting it at this very moment, but it has to be seen.

Just so you know, Dark Side of the Moon was made to mesh with The Sound of Music, though Wizard of Oz does an admirable job. Also, the stargate scene at the end of 2001 will mesh with just about any song.

My suggestions:
Animation - Pom Poko
Sci-fi - The Host, Sunshine
Romantic Comedy - Wristcutters
Drama - Requiem for a Dream

Nowhere near as much as I could suggest, but I suspect that the polls are soon closing.

Avoid the Silent Hill movie if you’ve never played the games, otherwise you’ll hate it and it won’t make sense. Also, if you have played the games, prepare to RAGE over the misplaced appearance of Pyramid Head. It’s probably one of the best VG movies, though that doesn’t say much considering how bad they all are.

My suggestions are for horror:
Night of the Living Dead (the original)
Dawn of the Dead (Original and Remake)
Re-Animator
The Descent (warning, some versions of this cut out the ending to end on a cheap scare. SyFy airs this notoriously, and it ruins an otherwise good movie).

Bad Taste is the best movie ever, just saying

The Orphan and the Uninvited are also really good horror movies. Scared the shit out of me.

Requiem for a dream and the night of the living dead are going.

@leave a comment: we found a copy of bad taste in an ugly looking videostore. its definetly going =)

@Carcharocles: i saw that movie when i didnt even knew it was based on a VG, and i enjoyed it!

theres no gonna be any romance/drama section, i proposed just choose the classic dramas like casablanca and gone with the wind and i barely made it alive :(

I still have to insist you have the Descent. It’s really freaky horror movie with a mostly female cast, and its ending is probably one of most unsettling I’ve seen… not because of what it shows, but what it implies.
Skip the sequel unless you want to watch a crappy tribute to Buffy. FUBAR.

@Carcharocles: i just saw a trailer and a review at rottentomatoes. never heard of it before but looks pretty decent, and since you insisted, i think it will worth it. if it’s not accepted by the rest of the comitee, im getting it for myself anyways. thx :D
and Thanks everybody for suggesting, polls will close at mid december or when you guys stop posting here (which its most probable)

If you’re adding a “foreign film” section, show “Elite Squad” one of the best movies ever (Mostrly action, with a liiiittle bid of gore and politics).

Did I mention that Wristcutters is barely a romantic comedy/fantasy which takes place in the land where people who commit suicide go when they die? It’s really creepy, but it’s still very funny. You’d be able to get away with it.

I suggest a few of my favorites: The Princess Bride, Liar Liar, and Watchmen. They are all great, but Watchmen may be for a more nerdy audience.

@Scotch: thats plot sounds good to me. ill take a look at it. i must say youtube trailers and rotten tomatoes are consuming all my extra time! but ill do everything for make the best “flim” “festival” evah!

@Luei: altough i knew the watchmen was a comic just when the movie arrived, the nixonian-nuclear war thingy sure is an atractive plot. we’ll check it!
