1. You guys talk a lot. When I started, I thought it’d be a very slow forum, which justified the single board design and mixing with comic page comments. This is no longer sustainable, and indeed, comic page comments have been fully phased out.

2. You guys don’t like my idea of what a forum should be. I prefer minimalism, you guys want avatars, moderators and PMs. Alright.

3. The forum is a lot of work to maintain.

Personally, I’ll stand by any changes, but I’d prefer to stick with this forum. It’s not too common to see a bulletin board system that doesn’t use avatars, its a nice change of pace.

I vote vBulletin. Aesthetically it’s more pleasing and professional whereas PunBB is so simple and plain it is antagonizing to deal with.

Also, judging from what you said vBulletin has a ton of features and crap so I would assume we could do more than what we could with PunBB. At least when I make a forum post I don’t have to use this annoying whatever-the-hell to get italicized words and can simply use BBC code with the click of a button. Much simpler and less annoying.

When something reaches a certain size, (such as this forum) it becomes a major hassle to maintain and is bound to have more problems pop up, and so it would be easier on SuitCase (One person can only do so much) to maintain it. (If there are others who work on the site, I apologize for not recognizing/knowing about them.)

Honestly, I prefer something much different.
I come from a Chao/Sonic forum, and that one runs on PHPBB3, I think. Here is the site for it, I believe. It’s enjoyable. We have avatars, signatures, etc., and the administrators have no problem fixing certain things on the site or adding moderators. I would link you to it (the forum that I come from), if I were not afraid of people from here joining without reading the rules and breaking them…

We also have a chat directly installed into our forum board that we can enter, powered by Ajax. Here is where they got the chat from.
If you are making a forum like this, I would recommend these, because it’s been working very well for our forum. You can of course set up certain usernames, when they log in, to be administrators or moderators, and users have to have a password to log in. It would be a lot more secure than the chat that you have now. Plus, you can add/remove features, and kick/ban people from the chat for certain amounts of time if they misbehave.

Just thought I’d throw that out there.

Well, we, forum monsters, seem to be split.
I guess Taeshi-san and Mr. SuitCase will have to decide.

Oh, and I’m in for punBB.

This one is nice, but its just very fragile against people that won’t behave properly.

I like this forum as it is, and I don’t understand why it needs to be changed, but if the gods wish it to come to pass that a new forum must arise, I cast my lot in with the PunBB.

This forum’s username system is disturbingly easy to abuse, certainly. (Not that I would or have)
Still, no one seems to do it, so I guess it doesn’t really matter

Well, uh. I hear a lot of criticism of the current forums but not a lot of people seem to be interested in changing them to something more traditional?

I’m kind of confused now. Are you happy with the current state of things? I’ve been told it looks like a mess, etc, but I could just as well write some new features for it, make it easier to moderate, make a “random chat” and “art” subforum, etc.

Sorry, my point* was that people don’t abuse the system, even though they can. I actually really like the current forums. They’re pretty and non-confusing. If it isn’t too much work to admin this style of forum when it gets this big, I’d say keep it! Otherwise, PunBB.
(*Honestly, I’ve just always wanted to do that. The point was secondary)

I would say that it is doing fine the way it is; but a “proper” forum (do excuse the wording) would also be fine. Really, this solution is charming and unique, while a forum with registration and boards would possibly add a bit more security in terms of who you are talking with. Either has strengths and weaknesses, so you should do what you feel is best. I am in either way; I do not come here exclusively because of the forum layout. ^_^

This forum is in desperate need of counter-measures against people like Dirt, I’d argue. I don’t see anything wrong with registration, personally. I mean, I don’t think it would keep him out, per se, because he’s kind of obsessed with coming back here and pretending to be other people, but maybe if it became harder for him he’d be less likely to come back.

That’s about it. This forum is in desperate need of a deterrent against people looking to fuck it up for their amusement.

There’s one possible way to get rid of Dirt, and only vB supports it. PunBB doesn’t. I would have to code it in for here.

@ Suitcase: I don’t know anything about either, and I’ll probably be okay with whatever you decide anyway. Honestly? I can just ignore Dirt or people I think are Dirt (the awful English is a dead giveaway), but it kind of sucks when you have an otherwise nice place being cocked up by people who can’t take a hint. At any rate, if you did go with the other, I’m sure someone else would probably help with the coding.

Yeah sorry as of right now only Souppy can moderate this huge festering pile of crap. I hate all the shit posting, the random topics newbies make, the ban evasions, and the name changings. This forum IS broken. I get embarrassed having to mention to friends to look at the forums, I tell then to IRC instead.

It’s difficult to navigate, and is only ideal with a small group. I can’t even grasp my hand around moderating so half the time I have to nag souppy to delete topics.

It’s annoying. I want to give the job to several willing people, so that we don’t have to do such constant maintenance. Chock it all to not being able to have nice things.

Taeshi November 22, 2010, 1:13 AM EST.

To be honest the main reason I’m so adamant about changing the forums is because of the ban evasions. So you know who to blame.

Well, if the only way to permanently bane someone from existence is the vB, now I’m in for vB.

I agree with Taeshi-san.
And of course we can’t undervalue the wonderful work Mr SuitCase did here in this forum.

If I had to put my opinion regardless of others, I’d say this forum will have to change sooner or later, and we’d better do it sooner. What I’m saying is, this forum needs its users to be kind and well educated. That’s not very safe in the internetz.
We may not have thaaat much of a problem now, but nothing is stopping some idiot from wreaking havoc here.

Ok, what we need:
-For the Forum Gods to be able to banish people forever
-To force people to stick with a name, or at least NOT use a name that is being used by others
-The possibility for users to delete their posts (I really think this is important) (even if we can only delete it in, like, 15 mins after it was posted).
-Private messages are a good way of sending messages to a particular person without having to post a whole new topic.

I’m out of ideas. But there are probably more reasons.

As for newbies random topics, there are ways to lessen the problem, but we can’t absolutely solve that problem without scaring the lil puppies away, now, can we? =D

Oh hello there! I’m Jorje and I’m getting involved by spouting my opinion where nobody really wants to hear it. (Contrary to what has been said) But I digress….

imo, The punBB forums are a better choice for two main reasons. first of all, it’s much faster to load, so people like me (with terrible internet) can still participate instead of waiting. Secondly, to me, the vbulletin gives off a very professional and tense vibe, while punBB just looks simple, easy, and fun to get into. (I probably haven’t said anything that hasn’t been said already, but I still felt the urge to share)

also, While I have your attention, I think the links on your homepage might be a bit off. Pressing the word “characters” sends me to the forum, “Forum” sends me to the store, and “store” sends me to candybooru. (which I will be contributing to sometime soon)

*EDIT* As soon as I posted this, the homepage fixed itself… what is this hax magic??

Jorje, this was because of a haphazard transition I did to an older set of images on this site when MobileMe went down. Stupid, etc, but some people still have the old images cached. A refresh fixes it.

Lyucs, things like being able to delete posts and do PMs is something we’d really need to switch away from these forums for. It’d amount to a lot of work, adding these features bit by bit.

So I am still kind of thinking “change the board software”, as it doesn’t totally seem sustainable as it is.

As a kind of off-the-wall idea, is there any way the two could co-exist? Could this forum be repurposed for something else while most activity moved to a heavier board? I can’t think of how that’d work.

SuitCase November 22, 2010, 3:19 AM EST.

The forum could just archive comments on each comic page, so the polar opposite about what you did? So people can navigate recent comments on comics.
