Suitcase, regarding what you said earlier.

The full version of the forum is a bit messy, but the mobile version is just fine. A re-design would be nice if we keep this forum, rather than switching to a new one.

Well I still like the forums the way they are now, but after seeing Tae’s points, I kinda have to agree. my vote is for VBulletin.

Sani, how so? They’re basically exactly the same!

Last time I used the full version, I kinda got confused with the names being under the messages. Some places do that, but I tend not to go to those places.

Things may have changed since then, I dunno.

I tried both the forums and my vote goes to punbb at one condition:
I’ve read the reason of this change and would be useless to move to a forum wich cannot resolve all the problems you want to solve, in this case punbb (if I haven’t misunderstood) does not resolve the identity problem and as long it doesn’t then I would choose vbullettin…
If there is a way to get rid of the identity problem with punbb then I would choose it since it is simplier than vbullettin: Yes, vbullettin is cool and has a lot of things but are really essential? I don’t think so, moreover it is better to work with a forum easy to mantain.

If I have to choose based only on what I like or want then again my vote would go for punbb since it has the pm option (and IS simple… On vbullettin I got lost the first minute -.- )… Although I don’t think it is really essential.
Oh, and I think it would be a good idea to get rid of the post counter… It would prevent people to make a post only to increase it.

@ Suitcase: I actually had an idea regarding limiting name changes but it might be kind of complicated to implement. It’d be something like, say, registering a root name but allowing additions or edits to it as long as the root always stays there so you’re always identified by it. That’s what Ninja and I have always done to some degree, and so has Goldwulf, Nero and (I think, though I don’t really know him yet) fff. At the very least, it’d always have that one basic identifier there.

Jerk November 22, 2010, 8:53 AM EST.

Comment ID #131516

Another way would be to use 2 name, one as identifier and one as forum name (wich would be modified at the user’s heart content):
This second method should be easier to handle (at least I think) since it does not require a script wich check the modified user name to make sure it contains the root identifier (although it requires a registration form and an extra field).

Demone della Luce November 22, 2010, 9:04 AM EST.

Comment ID #131518

^ This is exactly what I’m talking about. THANK YOU.

Jerk November 22, 2010, 9:05 AM EST.

Comment ID #131526

It is similar indeed, but the one I was suggesting involves two separate names, not a name wich can be modified with a check for the presence of the root component…
Your idea is far more stylish since it does not modify the actual format of the forum, although it need a dedicated script for the root check, the one I suggested involves a modify of the format of the forum (since it need a second textfield) but it should need a bit less work.
Maybe I’ve just misunderstood what you’ve posted (when comes english I’m never sure to fully understand), in that case I’m sorry to have repeated something you already said.

Demone della Luce November 22, 2010, 9:22 AM EST.

Comment ID #131527

But that might cause a bit of a problem if people change their names to play as somebody else. Unless that is disallowed.

Oh, do not mind me. I am just imagining apocalyptic scenarios in my mind. ^_^

ILB November 22, 2010, 9:23 AM EST.

Comment ID #131532

Lol, that’s exactly the reason of the thing jerk came up:
Forcing a user to use a part of his/her name (or a second name) wich cannot be modified and has to be visible would at least limit the “identity problem” withouth harming those users wich change their name withouth harm (like jerk wich has just changed his name over time or ninja wich change it based on his comment context).

Demone della Luce November 22, 2010, 9:28 AM EST.

Comment ID #131535

That might be a problem to implement, though. Or really, I do not know since I have never done that much coding, but it seems harder - especially if the root would happen to be similar for two persons (say, *Ninja and TurnerClassicNinja, who would both have Ninja, or ToastyJester with Ubertoast or TheJoustingJester). The system you suggested is possible, at least if my extrapolating is correct; but the problem with that is if people are allowed to change their names freely.

I do not believe that will happen, though. I just happened to walk by a showing of Independence Day yesterday. ^_^

ILB November 22, 2010, 9:37 AM EST.

Comment ID #131537

That’s not going to happen. If the forum format changes, you’ll have to live with single account names and stop being retarded.

The avatar thing would kind of compensate anyway. Again, it doesn’t matter to me, I was just throwing that out there.

Well, those ideas were just for those who are “retarded” (if we may want to use such term) in a nice way, but I see your point.
To me it isn’t a problem at all since I do not change my username :asd:

There are some forums that allow name changes, and it works out pretty well.

In any case, I’m fine sticking with Sani as a name.

This is probably decided already but I like Vbulletin more. It’s not rocket science you know. The extra features more than make up for the simple design.

Switching forums is a terrible idea! If we switch forums in a way that will keep Dirt out for good, he will be left with so much free time he’d have no recourse but to spend it on self-reflection, which we can all agree would be a death sentence for the poor manchild. He would flat-out kill himself.

Won’t someone think of the manchildren?

I’m really thinking PunBB, after being horrified by the backend of vBulletin. If someone can find a simple style for it that isn’t as huge and bloated as the default one, sure, but it seems such a thing doesn’t exist.

What features of vBulletin seem so alluring?

The little explanation about self thing. Helps me cause if someone wants to know about my personalities I can say, “Click my name.” instead of writing it for the seventh time.

http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/invision/ A third option. It’s like vB, but less difficult for me to manage. What are your reactions?

I guess that would work, if ppl wanted to go with that.

Have you ever heard of icymint web servers? i’ve seen some nice layouts with that. It has personal messaging and moderating built in. easily managable.

Can you replace the template on all three forums? If not, I’d strongly vote for something that can maintain the style of BCB. As someone mentioned before, vBulletin looks rather industrial; kinda at odds with the rest of the BCB website.

You’ve spent so much time on the current forums, the design looks so pretty. (I mean, how often do you get elegant speechbubbles on commercial forums, huh?) It’d be a shame to totally lose the style.

Yappy November 23, 2010, 8:14 AM EST.

The third one seems okay. Like Sean said, a medium of the other two

I was never a big fan of Invision’s mobile mode, personally. If you could change its mobile layout to be more… ‘bcb’ish, possibly.

But its your decision, not mine.

I vote for punbabeh, because I like simple things, I’m NOT going to use a shitload of features anyways, and it’s going to be a rather crappy forum if the admin is having to deal with a ton of whatnots.

Comment ID #132192

Hmm, Invision looks quite nice, as long as you don’t have to Recaptcha EVRY FREAKING TIME

Sammy November 23, 2010, 3:58 PM EST.

Comment ID #132196

Is it too late for me to throw in my opinion?

I don’t use avatars or signatures, and don’t care about private messages. However, it’d be nice if we at least retained the capability to edit a message within 15 minutes of posting. Maybe also add the capability to delete one’s own message as long as it’s still the last post in a thread, although I can certainly see how it’d be easier for the admins if no one was able to delete their messages ever.

Jerk is absolutely right though: we do need a change, if only to reduce the number of immature idiots like Magical box of dirt. I can honestly say that the continued asshattery on these forums doesn’t exactly attract me to posting. I would totally be on side with a registration system and sticking with one name only. And please, for the love of whatever deity you might worship, let there be moderators on this new forum. I would nominate Jerk and ILB in an instant.

Whatever forum system meets the above requirements would work for me. The “look” of a board isn’t a major concern of mine, since most boards can (eventually) be skinned appropriately to more or less match BCB. Although if there’s a certain board system which makes it easier for you to track IP addresses and such, I might go with that. The backend concerns I’ll leave to you to decide what you can handle.

I basically decided on Invision.

Yappy, it sucks, but I don’t see a clear solution. I like the design of these forums too, they’re exactly as I planned, but it’s really hard to skin other forums. I’m going to do my best with Invision but I don’t think it’ll be ideal. We’ll see how close I can come. Speech bubbles are likely gone, though.

wacko, those edit\deletion things should be possible.

Munch, I’ll delete it soon anyway. Nobody rush to register, the new one is secret.
