Possible forum transition

I’m thinking of changing this to a more traditional forum.

This forum has been a labour of.. attempting to work out how to write PHP, and a fair bit of work has gone into it and improving it. However, there are several things that have surprised me in the 6 or so months since the forum has gone up:

1. You guys talk a lot. When I started, I thought it’d be a very slow forum, which justified the single board design and mixing with comic page comments. This is no longer sustainable, and indeed, comic page comments have been fully phased out.

2. You guys don’t like my idea of what a forum should be. I prefer minimalism, you guys want avatars, moderators and PMs. Alright.

3. The forum is a lot of work to maintain.

So, the solution seems to be to migrate to a more fully featured traditional board.

JUST SO YOU ARE AWARE: THIS TRANSITION IS NOT HAPPENING TOMORROW. IT’S AT THE VERY LEAST A MONTH AWAY. ALSO, ALL THE OLD POSTS WILL BE MIGRATED ACROSS, SO RELAX.

Now, this introduces its own problems. First off, I have to invest some time in making it look pretty. However, I suspect I’d do what I did with Candybooru and just tweak an inbuilt theme rather than box it into the main site like this current forum design does.

Also, it’d change the posting system. You will have to register to post in the forum, but page comments will remain a separate, non-authenticated system.

Finally, it requires a choice between functionality and simplicity. This is where I would love to hear some input. Obviously you guys want subforums and polls and moderators and ways to customise your posts with avatars. But: do you want private messages? Do you want to track subscriptions to your favourite topics? And so on?

This will determine which software I choose.

The first thought I had was PunBB, which you can view at http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/punbb/ . This is a simplified board that I really like the design of. It’s not hard to wrap your head around it, and it’s similar to Candybooru in its relative simplicity.

Then, there’s vBulletin. http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/vbulletin/ This is really heavy duty board software, that has advantages in that it has a billion neat extensions, has cool AJAX-y quick reply functionality, tracks subscriptions and does PMs in a robust way, and has all sorts of cool things. But I’d have to edit out a lot of cruft (all that post permission shit at the bottom, etc)

So, which way would you want to go? Those are both demo boards but you can sign up and post nonsense like I have to see how they work. It’s essentially a choice between simple and easy but limited, or complex and busy but very useful down the road. If we’re going to take this step, should we go the whole hog?

Let me know.

P.S. It’s a pirated vB installation, for those who might check. I’d certainly buy the software if we decided to use it.
P.P.S. If you have alternate software suggestions, let me know, but keep in mind the criteria here. Right now the only runner-up in my mind is Invision, which seems to be vB’s rival these days.

I prefer the vbulletin one personally… Simplicity appeals more since all of us are used to this forum design.

well, I’d stick with the old forums. because It’s simple.

phpBB is a very simple forum to use. It’s fiddly setting up permission, but beyond that, it’s fairly good. But out of the ones you’ve posted above, vBulletin, because the administration side of things is ridiculously simple.

Comment ID #130712

Wait, are you guys getting mixed up? PunBB is simple, vBulletin is an overwhelming mess of shit. The admin CP is terrifying.

SuitCase November 21, 2010, 12:51 PM EST.

Comment ID #130714

Really? I found vBulletin simple when I used it. Must have “upgraded” it since then.

Vbulletin doesn’t give me a migraine when I’m trying to post.

Sammy November 21, 2010, 1:02 PM EST.

Comment ID #130718

I’d choose PunBB, not just for our Admin’s sake, but because many people here is already used to the simplicity of the current forum, so this one seems more viable.

I don’t dislike the forum we have right now, but I definitely think this is a step in a right direction!
When you put it like simple X complicated, punbb looks better. But what kind of functions would we NOT have in a punbb forum?

I’d go with the PunBB , simple is better imo

I don’t like VBulletin. There’s too much. PunnBB is better and seems more familiar to me.

Sammy, were you implying PunBB gives you a migraine when trying to post? Why, and why is vBulletin better in this regard?

TheLightorTheDark, why?

SuitCase November 21, 2010, 1:42 PM EST.

My vote goes to the PunBB. It’s much nicer looking, and it’s allot simpler. More straight forward.

About the only function I’d miss on it that the vBulletin has is signatures. But only if they’re text only, as putting images in your signature is a good way to gay up the look of a thread really quick.

vBulletin seemed alot clunkier and needlessly messy. Also, I don’t know if this was a choice you made, but I couldn’t get Avatars to work on it.

tl;dr
I vote we use the PunBB.

Regardless of what forum type we pick signatures will be disabled.

@Suitcase I favor VBulletin because, as several others are saying, PunBB is simple. I like to see, do, read, and try new things. VBulletin has different capabilities, like avatars, which are new to me, interest me, and I feel compelled to fiddle with. I’m sorry that the software I favor will be a pain to work with my King.

TheLightorTheDark November 21, 2010, 2:04 PM EST.

Comment ID #130745

Most of these boards have a ton of settings. Both support avatars of varying sizes and signatures of varying lengths. As Veronica said, there would be no signatures. There would likely be avatars.

SuitCase November 21, 2010, 2:06 PM EST.

Comment ID #130749

Fair enough. In that case, I definitely vote for PunBB.

Also, in answer to some of your questions SuitCase… I don’t care about Private Messages really. They’re not necessary. And subscriptions annoy me TBH. (Poll’s I’m indifferent to, as I’ve never seen them be useful besides people making jokes).

One other change I’d want to see though, is in the profile management of PunBB. You can fill in a bunch of IM name fields, but it doesn’t have a Skype one. Seeing as how, outside of IRC, Skype is the communities 2nd biggest chat program used, I feel like we should have that as an option yeah? (I do realize that there is one in the vBulletin one, but I still stand by PunBB as the better choice.)

Maverik November 21, 2010, 2:40 PM EST.

Comment ID #130753

I give my vote to the PunBB because I enjoy it’s more simplistic style and features, though I will have to admit I like the look of VBulletin more. To be honest there’s no real need to get upset if either one gets picked they are both perfectly fine forums.

Can you keep an option to see all the newest posts (regardless of subboard) like there is here? That’s one thing I do like about this forum.

I’ll go ahead and vote for PunBB, since I enjoy simplicity. Maybe later, down the road as you become better at what you do and gain helpers, then you can go to VBulletin. Or not, its completely up to you, sir.

Aww, but i love this minimalistic forum, without the need to log in and such!
(Seriously, I do!)
“What is this? I don’t like change!”

Other than that, I have no clue which one to suggest, not a lot of practical experience.

So… by now we have about 9 votes for PunBB, about 2 for vBullentin and 1 or 2 to keep it the same…

… Next stop, PunBB. (probably)

Ninja’s gonna be full on pissed when he sees this, I’m a little annoyed to. I like this forum. It’s cute and unique and simple. It adds charm and cuteness to the already adorable comic. This feels….kinda like a sell out.

I LOVE how this doesn’t run or feel like other forums, I like not looking like every other forum out there. There is a friendly and homey feel about this one and I fear it will all but be destroyed by changing it.

But hey, this thing gets a huge amount of traffic and I understand that things are gonna change. We’ll live and keep coming back for the people and discussions, not how it looks but I’ll still be sad to see the old one go.

Choose the simpler design, I like it better.

Could the color schemes be changed? Like, to more closely resemble this “old” forum? I’d like to see it with the familiar pastel blues, greens, and pinks.

Dr. Klaus November 21, 2010, 5:09 PM EST.

Comment ID #130779

I’m with Dr.Klause on that. The colors look great here and it would be nice to have the same feeling the old forums have in the new ones.

I loved your idea of what a forum should be back when this place was just a handful talking about dicks, but you had to have had some idea that if the site was going to grow some people would find things to abuse about the current system.

Oh well, this place was nice while it lasted. Do what you gotta do, and such.

As long as you can still change your name and it still has a mobile mode, or just the mobile mode, I’ll stand by it.

I must say that I agree with those who liked the original format, in both respects. Either of the new formats would be fine with me if you decide to switch. ^_^

I’m also with Sani. The mobile site is helpful for many. The name change might lessen Ninja’s fury and I made a slight error in my name.

I don’t know, but it just seemed to take an age to do anything. The layout was confusing, the posting options went to infinity, and the colour scheme was atrocious. Maybe it was just a bad experience, but my vote is with vBulletin all the way.

Sammy November 21, 2010, 6:13 PM EST.

Comment ID #130947

I say the first. It feels nicer ;)
But the layout on the second looked a little better…
And I like he colours here, and the fact that you can randomly change your name… It’s kinda hard to deside… :O

He’s going to institute a forum gold system that will allow you to change your name after a certain accumulated amount or buy items for your special BCB avatar, and then he will release exclusive items that you have to steal your parent’s credit card to purchase.

Jerk November 21, 2010, 7:59 PM EST.

And then BCB will be bought out by Microsoft right?
