Mugging and its effects

Today I spoke to Calvin.
“What is this mugging you ppl speak of?” Yes, I say ppl in real life, it comes out ‘pe-pel’.
“It’s something students here do every day. Quite common around this period but some crazies do it all the time.”
“…WUT.”
So it turns out that mugging in Singapore is very, very common.

What do you mean by mugging? The crime?

Jeff in Aus May 4, 2010, 9:22 AM EST.

…Crystal, you silly girl.
Locally, mugging refers to the act of studying very hard in preperation for an exam. (or out of ‘over-enthuness’.)
Actual muggings are fairly rare here, even in the backlanes of ‘bad’ areas at night, but don’t get off-guard. Apart from pickpocketing (rare) almost all crime is nearly unheard of.
Singapore: the only successful, nice-to-live-in dictatorship EVAR. (also, we have voting. But the other parties aren’t fit to do anything. At all.)

I was about to say, I knew some peeps from singapore, and they reckoned crime was all small fry, so yeah.
Didn’t know you were a dictatorship though… well, you learn something everyday.

I thought that was called cramming? Mugging is a weird regional term to me!

Yeah, I think it’s specific to Singapore. Like with the word ‘thong’ we normally think of pluggers as Australians, but in America that’s the word for the g-string.

I heard of mugging before. It was my mate from Singapore who said it actually. Though I don’t think he got much mugging done in his time as he barely passed his O levels when he went back. I do wonder where the old chap is right now… Probably still trying t avoid the draft…

I bet “mugging” for a Singaporean means leaving your third re-read of the textbook until the last month before the exam.

Here, the word “sodomy” means “a friendly pat on the back.” And I bet you all thought I was just a vulgar douche.
