So, as I petition Veronica to start working on artwork for a bunch of interesting merchandise I think we can put up for sale, the real thing we’ve wanted to do for ages is finally on track (I think.)

Basically I’ve just submitted my third order to Lulu for the first proof copy of the first BCB volume. It’s 430 pages and covers the comic up until chapter 47 (New Beginnings, the one about Abbey and Daisy.) It’s the third order because they kept rejecting my PDFs, but I think I finally got it right this time.

After we get the book, we’ll work on a final draft of the book, order it, do some final revisions, and then we can sell it! I expect June\July will be the relevant time.

So, yeah, expect that in a few months.

I wanted to ask about pricing, though: it would seem to me that it’d cost about $15 for us wholesale if we buy sufficient numbers and have them delivered in quantity. This is a side-effect of it being over four hundred pages (most webcomic volumes are sub-200) and of Lulu being expensive (Createspace can do it for about $10, but they don’t work as well with comics.)

SO BASICALLY we’d probably charge $25 for a copy of the book. This is more than you’d pay for the average webcomic book, but kind of in line with the amount of content. Girly, Templar AZ, Dead Winter and Octopus Pie are $11-15 for 80-180 page books, and all those authors are douches to varying degrees! So surely you can tolerate twice the price for three times the pages from an author you can like. I hope.

Is this acceptable? It’s my greatest hesitation. The horrible thing is that it’s not just $25, it’s $25 plus $4-10 shipping (not sure yet) which might make things cost prohibitive. But for those of you who like the idea of a book, this is what I think is best, as the quality of the first 40 chapters belies the quality of those following it, and I feel like that should be consolidated into one big volume. I expect the next volume would be 200 pages and $18, as a comparison.

Of course, there’s all sorts of ideas we’re working on for unique content and pages of exclusive comics and other things to make the book exciting and worthwhile.

But is this like “ahh I wouldn’t pay that!!” or are you all sufficiently interested that spending around $30 is fine to you? It’s the only way we can make any vaguely reasonable amount of money off it, though we could cut our margins and sell it for $20 if you all balked. I think we’ll also offer a $8 bonus signed+sketch option, which could make up for it.. but hey.

Oh, also, how many of you are down for this? We might do formal pre-orders (well, more likely informal pre-orders with no money exchange) later, but it’d be good to know just how many people on the forum would be willing to buy a book of the comic!

I bought each of the two Dreamkeepers volumes (98ish pages) for $25, I’d buy 430 pages for $30.

How much would shipping outside the US be?

Pronkat May 7, 2010, 6:33 AM EST.

Comment ID #17180

$4-10. It depends on whether I can fit it into an envelope, which is much cheaper. I’m half thinking that I should offer a $4 letter option and $10 parcel option—one carries the risk of going undelivered for slightly exceeding the depth allowed for an envelope (2cm) and the other is within the boundaries.

Shipping within Australia would be $3 or something.

if the shipping to europe would mean it’s around the 30$ price I’d purchase it-
It’ll be awesome to have 2 volumes of it standing in my shelter x3

Then again how much Euro would that be- and another question, how would we pay?

Lisa May 7, 2010, 6:44 AM EST.

Comment ID #17186

That’s like 23 sowt euros Lisa.

Pronkat May 7, 2010, 6:47 AM EST.

Comment ID #17187

Ok I don’t know why that sowt was there but its’ around 23 euros.

Pronkat May 7, 2010, 6:47 AM EST.

Depens on the shipping price to germany though. I guess I can borrow a paypall account for the payment

Lis May 7, 2010, 6:50 AM EST.

Comment ID #17192

Will there be any redrawn stuff? Or just the chapters as is?

I’m contemplating getting it either way, just a question.

CaptainBaconMan May 7, 2010, 6:56 AM EST.

Comment ID #17194

Paypal would probably be the most straightforward means of doing things, but we’d be willing to accept any form of payment at all, really. I am not sure of good ways to transfer small amounts of money, internationally. Vero does have an American bank account and access to American services because of that, but it doesn’t make things all that much easier due to stupid ACH transfer fees.

SuitCase May 7, 2010, 6:57 AM EST.

Comment ID #17196

I don’t think any current chapters would be redrawn and fixed up, but there’d be about 10 unique pages drawn in the current style, at the least. Veronica might draw more than that if she has an idea\the time for a bonus chapter, but I’m not so certain about that.

There’d be more than 10 pages of non-comic-page stuff too, though!

Are these prices in US or AUS? (Not that there’s a HUGE difference ATM…)

Either way, I’d definitely buy one. I’d be even more inclined to do so if I can get a signed (and possibly original sketch) copy because I totally eat that shit up (Regardless of if there’s an extra cost).

Maverik May 7, 2010, 7:05 AM EST.

Comment ID #17203

signed!! yes me too- gotta remind them when it’s time for it again x3

Lisa May 7, 2010, 7:09 AM EST.

Comment ID #17210

USD. All prices roughly converted in my head (but they’re ordered from Lulu in USD..)

Signed ones may well come with some stickers and other nice things depending on what we can get together for merchandise.

SuitCase May 7, 2010, 7:14 AM EST.

Comment ID #17217

Yeah, if I use paypall it converts the Euro to USD…atleats I think it does-
ment to say this before- when I purchase the book I also purchase some merchandise- like keychains or something- some specials for another few USD would be really great too x3

like two weeks ago I payed 6 € for a LETTER alone which is like 7,60USD- I mean gee- frigging shipping prices *mutters*

Lisa May 7, 2010, 7:33 AM EST.

I’d probably have to pick up a copy.

Chronos May 7, 2010, 8:24 AM EST.

Have to admit it really depends on the money situation when it comes out. If I have a decent job when it comes out? Sure I’ll grab a copy… or maybe just a mug we’ll see. Right now though… such things aren’t really possible for me.

If i was in the position to do so, i totally would.

As a long-time follower of BCB, I would totally love to buy a book. I’m down for that $25 cost with the $4-10 shipping.

I’m with Bri; it mostly depends on my financial situation in when it comes out. Also, page size would be a factor.

@CaptainBaconMan: I like to buy large hardcover books, it kind of jacks up the price

MiwAuturu May 7, 2010, 8:47 PM EST.

Comment ID #17825

Yeah, BaconMan, a large amount of comic anthology-ish books, or even books that are just collections of artwork in general, are reletively expensive. The MegaMan Complete Works books come to mind; those were, like, $40 a pop when they were new. Now they’re, like, three times that much on ebay and amazon.

DavCube May 7, 2010, 9:29 PM EST.

Comment ID #17826

you know i’m down.
but you have to consider the exchange rates… a dollar is like 3.50 shekels.
so 30$ (+shipping) is to me 105 shekels…
and 105 shekels in isreal (yep, finally admited it,thats where i’m from.)
is not the equivalent of 105$ in the U.S. (your smart,so ill skip the explanation of why that is.)
point is,i don’t know how financial this is…
consider you might have readers from country’s less developed then Israel (actually were not that bad…) or just with a bigger inflation problem…

all i’m saying is,make sure you have buyers ready before you start producing a product.
also, try and get in touch with some other webcomic artist that had tried the same thing…
you don’t know… i mean,their advice to you might be: “don’t do it ! it’s a huge money burner !”

anyway,if you do eventually come out with a book, then write me down for a singed copy.

oddguy May 7, 2010, 9:53 PM EST.

Complete anthologies that are hard covers makes sense, but a regular book, even a hardcover, should never be above $25, and that’s pushing it pretty hard. If that’s not what you meant then sorry, but it sounded like you were talking about books in general.

I would totally pick up a copy of this, the second it’s for sale

(long time reader, first time poster :V)

I read a lot of webcomics but I never really considered buying the books for ‘em until now. BCB is by far my favorite webcomic, and I’d have no problem shelling out the money for a book ^^.

Dunno how much extra it is, but I think hardcover would be ideal in my opinion :D

Cobalt May 8, 2010, 6:16 AM EST.

Comment ID #18028

Hardcover would cost $13 more to produce. With shipping and a modest margin, we’d have to sell it for $36 + 10 shipping. That’s a lot!

SuitCase May 8, 2010, 6:35 AM EST.

Comment ID #18036

$50 for a book would probably be harder to sell..but honestly for the amount if pages id probably still do it. Hardcover lasts so much longer, and id hate to ruin a softcover and have to reorder one. Plus nearly 500 pages justifies it in my eyes. Maybe do hardcover as a special editiion and only have a few available to see how they sell?

note- hard to browse/post from a ds :D

Gescean May 8, 2010, 7:51 AM EST.

Comment ID #18048

I don’t mind hardcover. Is it possible to do one of those preorder drives other people do? With enough response you could make both.

Calvin CP252 May 8, 2010, 10:04 AM EST.

Comment ID #18072

I dunno. I feel like hardcover might be a good idea when the series is done and we make it a huge compilation of the whole series. For now, I don’t want to confuse anybody.

Then again, this depends on how the proof from Lulu ends up looking! I hope it’s fairly solid.

SuitCase May 8, 2010, 11:44 AM EST.

Comment ID #18111

Then let’s wait till Lulu gets the first issue squared away and then we’ll discuss the pricing issue.

Ved of Flames May 8, 2010, 1:33 PM EST.

Comment ID #18114

…wait…You mean the series will actually END!!! Has this been checked out with Taeshi, or is that just you speaking without knowing SuitCase. Because I got the impression from a cartoon she has on Deviant art that the series would go on forever….WHAT IS THE TRUTH!!! I MUST KNOW!!!

Oh, and I’d buy that book. Even if it is softcover, it’s still only about 7 cents per page (USD, Ninjas often use other currency, but I have some large bills that I need to get rid of pretty fast.)

Hysteria(sarcastic*Ninja) May 8, 2010, 1:36 PM EST.

@Hysteria(sarcastic*Ninja): Taeshi has publicly stated many times that BCB has a definate ending

@taeshi:
make an alternate ending on the final book like an extra , or a “some years later” thing would be awesome

Right now i’m in Romania, but will be back in Texas August. So i see that you said you’d accept any payment type? When i hit back to the states would a Money Order/Slip be good enough?
Also - Would all the current strips be in one book, or are there only a select ammount of chapters within each volume you produce?

Jörg May 11, 2010, 12:08 PM EST.

Comment ID #20110

Elosogamer: I’ve stated in the past BCB has a definitive ending, but it also contains a “bad ending” so I’m way ahead of you with alternate endings ;)

I’m totally down for this. I always like having a physical copy of things I like :P

BTW, does this ship to Asia? And how much if it would?

Jörg, the main issue with a money order is that it costs like $10USD for us to cash one here. We do have an American bank account, but unless it’s easy to get Veronica’s family to deposit into that account, you’d pretty much have to pay a hefty surcharge for it to be worthwhile.

I mean, frankly I don’t mind if you send cash, bank cheques, money orders, whatever else, but I’d have to pass on whatever it costs to deposit that amount here. The lack of a significant conversion charge is one of Paypal’s chief advantages (despite them being bastards).

Skyline, something like $10! As I said in the original post! Actually maybe less, I will check this stuff when I have a final book to take to the post office. That is still some months off, the order email I posted is for a very preliminary test book.
