It’s dreadful lately, isn’t it? I am currently trying to implement a caching system. I am so sorry, I feel like it’s a personal failing of mine that the site is so unresponsive and slow. I designed the comments part of it very badly and I regret that it is annoying a lot of you.

You’re eventually going to have to create some sort of archive system for the old junk threads (or just send them to digital purgatory). There are a lot of threads with one or two replies that don’t really have any reason to float around anymore. (Just like my face)

Pixelnator July 13, 2010, 1:17 PM EST.

Comment ID #59196

Yeah, they’re pretty much just taking up space and whatnot…

The site seemed to originally act up when the number of threads neared 1,000. In any case good luck with the fix.

It’s okay, Soup-gun. I had to leave the computer sooner or later. (<- Lie).

Using a cache is nice, but you can add a bit of ajax to some places, won’t ya think? It would make some way faster. I know that dealing with Ajax + PHP + MySQL is not an easy work, but may give some nice results. The site seems to be faster than the 2 previous days. I can sugest you to storage all the older comments on the comics and also make another storage file (As PixelNator said) for those threads that doesn’t cover a quota to make them to stay alive. And also relaly old threads that no one cares or they’re not even important to the site, you can storage them and free some space to improve the server speed and (of course) the space. IMHO

Deleting the old threads would delete the old nsfw threads

Bread July 13, 2010, 9:51 PM EST.

Comment ID #59326

I was referring to old threads that don’t stand a quota of responses. To stablish a minimum of responses, and if the thread doesn’t go beyond that minimum, delete it.

For the pervs of the site, the NSFW threads may remain alive due to the amount of the responses, so don’t worry (I’m not saying i’m a saint…but i don’t pay a visit to the NSFW thread often or even posted there).

In fact that’s a good idea SuitCase, why don’t establish a minimal quota of responses in order to give some free space to server and have more control over it?

Frustrated Writer July 13, 2010, 10:00 PM EST.

Comment ID #59340

Because big threads probably aren’t the problem here.

I noticed Soaring Rabbit also falls when BCB is down. Assuming both sites are on the same server, I can safely say the increase in viewers could be exceeding the server’s limit. (which is quite a lot then)

It’s doing fine now, compared to yesterday where it loaded like some flash-heavy site.

So, I discovered my Apache settings were completely retarded, same as MySQL. After a lot of tweaking, I think I have a winning combination of settings. Everything should be super quick and stable from now on. Please let me know if the site is anything less than wonderful.

It actually went down for an hour this morning, and I rescued it, but I’d appreciate if anyone told me about that kind of thing going forward. (I tweaked the memory settings so it shouldn’t happen again..)

SuitCase July 20, 2010, 5:28 AM EST.

Comment ID #61606

Overall, site performance seems to be much better for me. Within the last couple of weeks I have been experiencing time-outs and long load times (> 10 seconds). Current load times are less than one second, on average.

PenultimateQuestion July 20, 2010, 7:04 AM EST.

Comment ID #61620

I expect the site will be super quick at all times from now on.

However, there is the chance pages will stop loading and throw weird “Cannot access db” errors when it runs out of memory. That’s what happened this morning, but I’ve adjusted things to hopefully avoid that. You can only guess and check, though, so there’s a chance it’ll happen again. It’s memory issues that cause actual downtime that may come up again, not performance.

Yesterday when trying to go to the archive I got something along the lines of “Internal Server Error 500” Or something similar. I refreshed a couple times and the page was normal.

Just got a site over capacity error while trying to access the forum. Refreshed a few times, now I’m good. Just felt like reporting this, if you want me to stop being Error Reporter Man, say so Bit Soupp.

had the same error… but its all good though, because that means the site is full of people :)

Same here, but for me half the ads are grey boxes that read “The server is overloaded or offline. Please try again later”
I’m on my wii if that helps

This is probably just me, but when I view the comic, the image is offset to the left a bit from where it would normally sit.

Excuse this post

Ziv August 9, 2010, 6:06 AM EST.

Comment ID #72296

Hannibal, yes, that’s intentional. It makes place for the tower ad on the right.

Are you using an ad blocker, one which removes the “reason” for the page being offset? I’m considering some kind of fix for people who block ads, so that it is recentered,

SuitCase August 9, 2010, 6:55 AM EST.

Comment ID #72411

Yeah, I use adblock, I figured that was the reason why.

The IRC link above is giving me the message
“No server tab, and no channel specified”

Edit: after a few more tries it is working now, I don’t know why i got that.

This is a minor problem. In the reply box, the rule for image size is “no wider than 684 pixels”. When editing it says “no wider than 600 pixels”.

For some strange reasons the site doesn’t want to load in google chrome. It does in firefox however. This error appears.

In regards to the Aw Snap page, I’ve done some testing myself. If you use Adblock addon that may break the page for you. If not that addon, I suggest going through your extensions, turning them all off then back on one by one to see if any of them affect your page viewing.

Rukral August 25, 2010, 10:42 AM EST.

Idk if to post this here or email but whatefer. Just about every time I try posting something and the going back to the main forum page the site says Over Capacity Error. I thought it was just this computer, but it happened on both of our computers >:l

Draixen August 25, 2010, 11:29 AM EST.

Comment ID #81593

Like, right now you are getting the over capacity errors? Or you were earlier? Because I was advertising hard before but am no longer.

SuitCase August 25, 2010, 11:31 AM EST.

Comment ID #81596

It happens every now and then, like when i posted on the store and when i posted a new thread. So I guess it’s only when you’re advertising?

Draixen August 25, 2010, 11:33 AM EST.

Comment ID #81614

I reset the servers regardless. Looks like I should upgrade the server soon.

Ziviz, fixed. Thanks for pointing it out.

Valumior, Rukral, that’s weird. I don’t use Chrome but I use Safari and I don’t see any crashes. Let me know if you can figure out if it’s a particular page or something.

Anyone here having a problem when accessing the BCB forums with their PS3? Almost every time, it completely freezes the PS3 and I have to restart it. It happens right when you enter a thread and you’re prompted to run a plug-in. I’ve picked both “yes” and “no” and either way, it freezes.

SkylineFaux August 25, 2010, 12:09 PM EST.

Comment ID #81625

You really shouldn’t use the PS3 browser for anything. It is a mess. I tried getting this site working on the PSP once and I gave up once I realised that broken crashy sites appear to be the norm rather than exception.

SuitCase August 25, 2010, 12:39 PM EST.

Comment ID #81645

Opera under Ubuntu crashes sometimes when I open a lot of threads. It is probably not a forum problem but a problem Opera has with too many tabs. I don’t open many tabs in a short period of time when they’re not bcb…

Fizmat August 25, 2010, 1:15 PM EST.

Comment ID #81657

I fixed that error a long time ago Suit, it isn’t google chrome itself that is the problem but the extensions people can download for it. Something w/ Ad Blocker was making BCB and other pages w/ ads on them crash and so I had it removed, simple as that.

As I said above, anyone on Chrome w/ problems, simply go through your add ons to see which ones are the faulty ones.

Rukral August 25, 2010, 1:52 PM EST.

Comment ID #81661

@SuitCase
I frequently use the PS3 for surfing the net when I’m just going to check things quickly (PC I’m using takes at least 10-15 minutes to start up and stabilize). No big deal though, at least I get to check the comic with no problems :P

SkylineFaux August 25, 2010, 2:13 PM EST.

Comment ID #85169

I don’t know if anyone else has had this problem, but the page by page RSS Feed isn’t working for me. My other RSS feeds are working fine, but the BCB one doesn’t. Just thought I’d bring it up.

Draixen September 1, 2010, 6:41 PM EST.

Comment ID #85172

There’s two RSS feeds, brother: the page-to-page and the completed chapter. Make sure it’s the former first because, while it CAN be wonky sometimes it’s been updating just fine lately for me.

J. Vincero (Jerk) September 1, 2010, 6:44 PM EST.

I made sure it was the page by page when I clicked it. I checked like 3 times before clicking it. And idk why it’s doing this.

also, i have had reacouring “site over capacity” errors. i dont really mind cause i just refresh and its good, but there may be someone who does.

GoldenArbiter01 September 1, 2010, 9:35 PM EST.

I think it’s coming to the time I ask for a server upgrade. Maybe this week.

RSS problems shouldn’t happen! Is that really so? Does your client check it directly? Or go through a sync service like Google Reader
