Same fast speed as always for me.

To be fair, I did switch browsers. And operating systems. =/
Comment ID #18641
Better for me
Comment ID #18651
It seems to be working better now…
Comment ID #18657
South America linkup speed is still the same. No differences noticed
Comment ID #18658
Seems faster yeah. I never had major issues before, but it’s pretty seamless now.
Comment ID #18667
Scratch that. It’s faster than the same fast speed. It was fast before for me, now it’s even faster.
Can we… can we give it a name?
Comment ID #18676
*Sings* Blue streak, speeds by…
Comment ID #18719
Seems faster to me
Comment ID #18727
the site is faster.
My ipod’s internet sucks.
Comment ID #18845
Uh, did the site just go offline for everyone for about an hour? Or just for us?
Comment ID #18848
it refused to load for a little while
i dunno if it was an hour though i was out for a while
Comment ID #18852
Went off for about half an hour. There was a lag of about 35 minutes since the last post when I got back on.
Comment ID #18897
Kind of frustrating, as I don’t exactly know what happened. It doesn’t seem tied into the performance fixes. Anyway, if it happens again, email me! I might not always know if there’s an outage and if it happens regularly it’s likely my fault.
It does seem that things are a bit nicer now, by the way. The server I/O stats are a lot more reasonable.
Comment ID #18902
It’s…happened before. But since I’m on pretty much all the retarded time anyway, I’ll let you know next time it happens.
Comment ID #18984
It went down again for a little bit just now. ![]()
Comment ID #18986
Yep, now and around half an hour ago too.
Comment ID #18987
I noticed too! I don’t get it at all.

Did the site just go down or did my computer just feck up on me
Comment ID #19855
The site will suddenly dissapper while I’m surfing (about an hour or so), but typically refreshing or going back a page and clicking the topic again does the trick.
Comment ID #19919
I honestly don’t get it. It doesn’t make sense as all other aspects of the server are fine in these dropouts, even the Apache process itself. I’m talking to my host about it, to see if they can figure out what is happening in these periods.
Comment ID #20166
So, I just quietly switched over all the comic-related scripts to use MySQL instead of a flat file database. Everything should look and work as it did before, except Taeshi’s commentary has returned.
This was actually a pretty big change, so if you notice any weird bugs, let me know. I thoroughly tested it but stuff always slips through, and there were a lot of opportunities to miss things as I went through the conversion.
Anyway, this was the main obstacle standing between us and good site performance—at least I expected it was. I’m going to see if the site is now reliable and fast. As always, let me know any problems you have so I can better diagnose them.
Comment ID #20266
The server kind of fucked up for a little bit today.
I’m tattling.
Comment ID #20371
Alright, the server is responding better on my iPod. ![]()
So now I know it’s just my wireless server that’s going on and off.
(cause when it’s connected, BCB loads in a few seconds)
Comment ID #20399
Um… suddenly went slow as molasses tonight.
Comment ID #20479
It’s working much faster for me!
…Probably because I changed from wireless to LAN.
But then I also changed from 10 MBPS to 2 MBPS…

Through the forum, often if you click a “Confrontations Page X” it will bringh you to the equivalent page in “troubled water” instead.

@SuitCase
I want to save the comic to my computer so i can print out a hard copy for my self but i cant right click on it and save ….. is there any way to save it?
Comment ID #24412
No problems here. ![]()
Comment ID #24413
Idk if this should be psoted here. It’s always been fast, but i had to allow my computer to read a different port #80 to keep accessing this site.
Comment ID #24499
Miw, aha, I remember that problem. If you look at it, I think the issue is that it says “Confrontation” instead of Troubled Waters, because the comment count is accurate and there is a duplicate Confrontation on the page. I’ll look into this.
Paulo, yeah, I wasn’t quite sure how to do that in a satisfactory way. If you use Opera, you can toggle user mode which displays the page unstyled (so that a big invisible hyperlink doesn’t cover the page and you can right click it), otherwise you can save the whole page and extract the image, or just guess the URL, which will be like http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/comics/55/ 1.png
Jorg, what are you talking about?
Comment ID #24501
This website doesn’t trust me anymore. I used to be able to edit my comments, but now it won’t let me. It says I need to edit using the same IP address I used to post, but I haven’t switched computers between posting and attempting to edit. Is this my computer’s fault???
Comment ID #24504
@SuitCase
thanks for that but i found away in firefox i just clicked on view sorce code and i found the src for the image and cliked on it and opend up in a diff window were i dot the save ass and it’s all good now but thaks for the help post tho
Comment ID #24525
Ninja, you probably just have a shitty ISP that cycles through different proxies to access webpages. There’s not too much I can do about it besides removing the IP check (which could lead to people changing posts with some custom cookies)
Comment ID #24529
DON’T CHANGE THE SITE SUITCASE!!!!
I’m fine with just knowing that it’s my computer that’s f***** up and not this site. I realize that the IP check is entirely necessary. Don’t worry about it just because of me (not that you would, I’m just feeling a little self-centered today&hellip![]()

In the interest of going through the proper channels to say this:
People have an extra incentive to be idiots on update nights because the first three posts are viewable without expanding the comment section. Even if you got rid of it, you’d still have a problem with people doing that sort of shit but I figured getting rid of those three slots at least might do something to stop that sort of thing.
Know what I mean?
Whatev. It’s just a thought.
Comment ID #27728
This did occur to me too. After all, you said yourself that there’s nothing special about the first posts (indeed, quite the opposite), so why should they get special treatment? About the only excuse is for Taeshi’s comments when they fall outside the Commentary box.
Comment ID #28677
Just noticed this, but how come the “x minutes/hours/days ago” timer for the last post will sometimes say “60 minutes” and other times “1 hour”? They are equivalent, so why should the website care? It’s not a problem per se, only puzzling.
Comment ID #28925
Do they occur in different scripts? Like, do you notice 60 minutes appears in thread views, and 1 hour in comic comments? Or are you even referring to the thread list?
I don’t know about the first three posts. It’s an interesting theory, but I feel like it orients the discussion somewhat and is worth keeping. Plus it makes more sense to have a bunch, then a gap, then the last few. I’d rather police the morons than change that.
Comment ID #30028
The “60 minutes” AND “1 hour” appear in at least all the comment (i.e. forum post) timestamps.
I figured it was a rounding issue: A comment 0:59:31 ago gets a 59 minutes stamp, then gets minutes+1 for seconds>30, while a comment over an hour just has the hours noted.
Or something.
Fair enough with regard to the three posts. As long as people vaguely try to follow the start-point they set, I guess it makes sense to maintain them.

@The Almighty Webmaster SuitCase: It was on the forum index, same browser, one thread said 60min the one right underneath it said 1 hour, suggesting that Yappy could be right.
Comment ID #30945
I’ve found it’s actaully slowed down for me,and I’m using super high speed *saddly it’s the actaul name, but ca la vie*

Dear Souppy:
The new site policy is awesome. I wish you were my dad for two reasons:
1. You have good ideas.
2. You don’t whine like a little bitch.
3. (reserved for further yet inevitable awesome things in the future)
Love,
(Jerk)

As promised, I’ve worked on this and I think I located the issue and (temporarily) fixed it.
I’ve contacted my lovely web host and they are going to tell me if the stats are better, but I’m curious to know—is the site loading much faster for you now? Super fast, no complaints fast? I’m especially interested to hear from people who felt the site was slow before, and had issues with timeouts and such.
As a side note, page commentary is gone from the archives until I can confirm that it was the main issue. Then I’ll bring it back, in a more efficient way.
