This topic should have been made a long time ago, it’s completely rediculous, they should have solutions in place in case of an accident like this, instead of floundering around for weeks before they figure out how do deal with it properly.

Oil for the fishes and the deep blue sea
Oil for you and me
(with apologies to Three Dog Night)

I find it absurd that they had to put up a blog for cleanup suggestions and how BP originally stated that they couldn’t afford to fix the problem, which at least they were called out on citing Multi-trillion dollar profits on a quarterly basis.
Comment ID #23856
Mmmm love me some poison.
Comment ID #23857
I’m glad they finally did figure out how to stop it from flowing into the sea, (they’ve essentially put a tube in place to pull in all the oil from the pipe that burst), but they’ye just burning off all the still useable oil that they are drawing from the pipe, another thing horrible for the environment.
Comment ID #23864
Oh and the dispursents have been failing and are extremely toxic too. They discovered the pipe has multiple leaks and as a result is still spilling 70,000 barrels of oil a day, contrary to BPs suggestion of 5,000. Tar balls have been found by Key West Florida now and the second it gets in the Gulf Stream it will travel up the Eastern coastline.

I’d like to know what caused the blast in the first place! It sounds like sabotage to me!
Comment ID #23868
Basically the current solutions aren’t working and fortunately BP is failing to a (certain degree) at covering it up.
Comment ID #23870
Admittedly the blast itself was pretty much unavoidable, a methane bubble got caught with the oil and exploded. Failsafes do exist for this, but apparently the technology just isn’t as good as we though. They had no way of knowing this. The follow up is where they really fucked up since they could have and should have done something sooner.

Stupity, short cuts and anything to make a quick buck were the causes. Multiple elements weren’t in place and even failed months beforehand, they were known about and then neglected and never fixed. Also the Loch Ness Monster adapted to the ocean and lit up a cigar.

Not that you AREN’T insane, I just don’t like people mistaking sarcasm for insanity. After all, sarcasm is intentional!

Oh I know, but being serious is sooooo much fun. ![]()
Comment ID #23904
Not to say that this isn’t horrible, but there are far worse things going on that are downplayed so much that you probably don’t even know they happen.
Like algae blooms caused by chemical fertilizers that cause eutrophication over miles of estuary. Agriculture is the biggest polluter, and the biggest user of energy and water. (In the US that is)
Comment ID #23911
Yep, there are plenty of fun-filled destructive BS events throughout the world, but obviously those will work themselves out……Oh the Earth destroyed humanity, what a shock. ![]()
Comment ID #23914
Sorry CBM, I already knew that one. It is sad to hear how all the algae are killing off the populations of other animals, but you need to try something more obscure.
Comment ID #23928
Alright then Ninja, did you know that a two stroke engine puts out more pollution in one hour then 200 cars?
Think about that next time you mow your lawn.
Comment ID #23931
Cutting grass lets out natural pollutant gases that are stored within the grass itself.
Comment ID #23939
@CBM: Yep, because cars are subject to more regulations, have better fuel economy, and are more efficient during operation. Try again again.
And if you’ve seen my lawn, you would know that their is a very good reason I DON’T mow it….
WALKER THE KILLER WEED!!!!!
…no, not that weed. he’s a giant man-eating venus-flytrap thingy. Nobody knows for sure since he keeps eating the scientists sent to investigate….
Comment ID #23957
Okay, did you know that most of the corn that is grown in the US is inedible to humans?
Comment ID #23977
I hear talk of permantetly banning any future drilling here in CA
Comment ID #23991
It’s disgusting and sad, but the most awful thing is that it’s unlikely Obama will have the balls to push for radical legislation in the wake of all the public outrage. What this disaster should be seen as is an opportunity to levy 85% taxes on all oil companies, and put it towards regulatory agencies and (more importantly) R&D for renewable energy sources (the so-called new Apollo project.)
It takes crises like these to provide the political will to make sweeping reforms and radical changes, and squandering them is what Obama seems to do best. Just like financial regulations should be incredibly tight, and GM should have converted all their plants to build Chevy Volts, this disaster should be transformed into a pivotal issue on which progressives can make a stand that cannot be shot down.
Instead we’ll just get watered down regulation tweaks and maybe an emissions trading scheme. YES WE CAN!
Comment ID #24196
Yes We Can produce mediocre changes that in many cases make things worse. What a wonderful world…..
Comment ID #24200
So are you saying Obama is the new Jimmy Carter? =/
Comment ID #24203
Wasn’t Carter a truly divisive liberal? He seems more like a centrist do-nothing in the style of Clinton to me
Comment ID #24206
I…had hope for him, you know? It felt good. ![]()
I still have hope for him on some level, but the honeymoon’s definitely over, that’s for sure.
Comment ID #24359
I started off skeptical because I knew he was going to toss NASA, which was one of the few profit making edges that gave us the technology we had today and is still more advanced than other space programs. For every dollar put in you get 7 back, so 1 billion becomes 7 billion. I still had some faith in the dude, but the way congress, the senate, pussyfoots around MAJOR devastating problems drives me insane and then the president doesn’t enforce his ability to overule to move things along. Nowadays everything is done Half-Assed in the hopes that things will turn out for the best. They don’t and those suffering the most end up picking up the slack or smothering under it.
Comment ID #24371
My problem is that I don’t trust the government any more than I trust the Oil Companies.
Seriously, which one has the worst track record?!?
Comment ID #24381
i’m sorry for being the idiot here…
but,can someone explain to me what were talking about ?
i haven’t been keeping up with U.S.A politics recently.
Comment ID #24382
@ Oddguy: Here’s the score - there was a major oil spill off the Texas coast and no one is taking the initiative to fix it and the government, now under scrutiny, admits it borked the enforcement of regulations that should have prevented it.
Comment ID #24383
Well the oil companies pay off the government and the government is made up of only those in the wealthiest class, who continually give themselves tax cuts and don’t pay for medical insurance and literally feed off of and rape everyone up the ass who can barely get by, so I don’t blame you for your rightful distrust.
Comment ID #24385
Except for the millionaires who run (insert political party here). Because of their apparent ideologies, I can trust them not to have a conflict of interest, yes?

Potent sarcasm bro. ![]()
Comment ID #24515
It’s weird how the great depression pushed the US political scales the the left, but this recession is pushing people to the right.
What’s up with that?
Comment ID #24516
The right is paying out the ass to paint the left as the bad guys, because the right are the bad guys, not all, but those stereotypically affilliated.
Comment ID #24520
@Hmmmmm has a point. If people like the tea party group knew what was up, the right would be the ones receiving death threats.
Comment ID #24522
So the right has the better PR department this year the way the left had the better PR department in ‘08. Both sides are just infectious diseases with no obligation to campaign promises and layer-upon-layer of conflicted interests.
Race and gender and sexual orientation aside, I’d rather see a poor man or woman elected to office than any of the above.
Comment ID #24524
If these are our political parties, I’d hate to see what our political hangovers are like!
Comment ID #24532
@Ninja: If you happen to be knowledgeable in the history of U.S. politics (as I just so happen to be) you know that the hangovers are a real doozy.
Everybody join the DTS party! (DTS=decline to state, independent, no party whatsoever). The Tea Party actually gaining power is what scares me.

Just seeing what people think of the down-played environmental disaster and possibly the absurd amount of wealth in the oil companies. (Enough to pay off the world debt btw).
