I think I’d be most like Michael. I’m generally pretty easy-going and happy, even when something serious comes up. Not to toot my own horn, but I’m fairly smart, athletically inclined, and have enough popularity that I can’t favor one person without hurting many others, so I just settle on non-dating. I’ve had a Lucy-esque friend in the past... It was difficult for her to share her feelings with others, but she felt safe with me. Over time, she began opening up to those who genuinely cared, and now, she has a close group of friends she can rely on.
I have never fallen off a cliff, but I did fall a fair height out of a tree once. Does that count? ^^

How do you relate to the BCB characters?

Well as a new reader, let me start out by saying that I personally enjoy your comic, the characters are well rounded and imaginative enough to grab my attention without being over the top.
That being said I feel I most relate is Abraham, having come from a family similarly fucked up, I can see his reluctance to be like his father while still willing to get down and dirty to protect the ones he loves. Leaving my connected somewhat to Abraham in the ways of his past and fear of turning out like his father. If I could just say one thing to Abraham it would be this, “The sins of the father are not those of the son. Similar actions are different in the force that drives them and the person who performs them.”

I think i can kind of relate to more than one.
I’m like Daisy because im mostly cheerful,
I’m like Amaya because I’m sometimes silent (like at schoool xD),
I’m like Mike because I’m smart-ish,
and I’m also like Kizuna because I get hurt A LOT.

I did something good? I can’t believe it ^_^
Really, I can relate to all the characters (with Yashy and Katie as exceptions; I see I forgot to add her). My reasons:
Lucy - I tend to lock my feelings up, or adopt new ones, when I interact with others. I used to be violent as well, although I never managed to hurt anyone. Guess I should be happy I have near no muscle. ^_^
Paulo - for much the same reasons as I connect with Lucy. Though he somehow feels closer on the inside (what he’s really like) than on the outside. With Lucy, it’s a bit opposite.
McCain - I’m really a know-it-all, and I interject my opinion at times when I really shouldn’t. People tend to disagree with me just because I talked. I don’t blame them. ^_^
Sue - again, for the same reasons as McCain. My friends call me both “know-it-all” and “annoyingly smart”, although both of those terms are more benevolent here than in BCB.
Abbey - I haven’t got near as tragic a backstory as he does, but I feel empathy with him all the same. As I said, I used to be violent and temperamental, and also very reserved. And I’ve made a similar turnaround.
Tess - I, too, have skeletons in my closet. So many shadows I am not proud of. I’m just happy I know people that make me forget them. Another thing I can relate to is her being shunned, something that happened to me a lot before I met the friends I have today.
Daisy - I’m so much like her now, although I still have baggage from my past. And I haven’t met any Abbeys, either. ^_^
Michael - at least I try to be more like him (when he has a good day, at least): I want to be friendly and without too much prejudice, and I want to help those around me. My success is mixed, though.
Lily - see Michael. I’ve never had much luck in attaining those goals, though, but I try my best.
Kizuna - I’m also a flimsy and clumsy person. And when I destroy things, it’s never on purpose. And I have part of the stalker in me. ^_^
David - see Kizuna.
Amaya - I’m usually silent (you probably won’t believe this, just look at how long my post is), and don’t talk much. I try to keep a positive outlook and just be present rather than being the centre of everything.
Augustus - he is considered mysterious, but is still noticeable. I guess that somehow applies to me as well. What I really share with him, though, is his ability to be alone in a crowd.
Did I forget anyone? If not, that’s (largely) who I can relate to and (also largely) why I can do so.
Comment ID #3096
I can also relate to more than one:
McCain - I’m usually pretty blunt, technical, cynical, and a know-it-all.
Mike - I’m easy-going even when situations get serious.
Amaya - I like staying quiet and in the background. I hate being the center of attention.
Daisy - I try to keep a positive outlook on life, and I’m smart.
Abbey - I care about how my decisions may affect other people, I’m rather shy, and I usually talk very properly.
I’m sad to see that there are no musically inclined characters, nor do any of them share my taste in classical music
I guess not every group of friends can cover all the bases.
Comment ID #3103
I’ve seen a lot of posts here about Mikes easy going side... but I’m sure there’s a lot of people here who can related to his frustration as well. Dudes always trying to do the right thing but is always put in situations where being honest hurts his friends, and makes him look like a jerk in the process.
We’ve all had to be in that sort of situation at least once, I know I sure as heck have, and found myself feeling sorry for Mike in that respect. Sure... he could have handled it a bit better....but heck he’s a teenager, so what do you expect?
Beyond that.... hm I found myself relating most to Sue over all. I stay in the background, sometimes toss out a joke, or act as a voice of reason. Help people when needed, but generally try not to get in peoples way.
Comment ID #3152
Which character I relate to the most… This will probably be very hard for me to decide. In real life, I’m a combination of many different personalities… I’m known to be an annoying jerk while at the same time being somewhat of a pushover and softie… But not like Paulo… And I’m nothing at all like my favorite character, Amaya… The only thing that makes me like her is that I don’t get to speak my mind a lot… however, when I do, it’s at the worst time…
I guess, there’s not really a character that I can relate to at all…
However, I do still have my favorite characters!
In order:
Amaya
Lucy
David
Paulo
Tess
Comment ID #3153
Scratch that. My friend just said that I’m like McCain for some reason. Apparently, my strong opinions about certain things and the way I voice them makes me like him.
Comment ID #3160
i dont see myself in any of these characters honestly
Comment ID #3217
I can relate to McCain personaly I tend to be kind of a downer but funny so people tell me Im also a smartass almost constanly
Comment ID #3231
“I’m sad to see that there are no musically inclined characters, nor do any of them share my taste in classical music
I guess not every group of friends can cover all the bases.”
Lucy and Tess sing quite a lot. But it’s true classical music is lacking, though I guess that’s not really viable as a complaint. ^_^
Are there HTML quote tags, by the way?
Comment ID #3239
I’d say I’m most like McCain and Lily in the sense that I always voice my opinion but not always at the right time. I guess I can be a bit like Lucy as well seeing as I hide a lot of feelings, but I’m not exactly violent.. much.
Comment ID #3297
@ILB: When I wrote that, I was thinking of intruments. I completely forgot about the singing.
Comment ID #3298
And what’s wrong with singing? Is one’s voice not considered an instrument? XD
Comment ID #3356
Again no drama please!
Let’s see, what characters I relate too:
Lucy: would be most like me. I tend to be a real defensive prick sometimes, though I don’t normally hit people, just snap at them.
McCain: If there’s one thing people know me for, it’s being blunt like hell. I actually said in an interview that I’m not afraid to tell a prick off (though not exactly with that wording XD)
Paulo: I can be a real pervert sometimes, as my mate’s girlfriend keeps pointing out (then again, she made out with me drunk at her birthday as well as pouting every two minutes, so I pull out the slut card when she gets too annoying XD)
Tess: I’ve done things I’m not proud of, but can’t talk about…
Daisy: I’m a scholar at heart, no matter what I do, tha’ll always be there.
Michael: I’ve never really been lucky in love (and don’t say that the relationship with Sandy is lucky. It’s more of a bloody drag than Lucy). I also prettymuch have my head in the clouds.
David (8th Grade): Back when he was a disaster at sport. Enough said.
Kizuna (8th Grade): Boy, am I clumsy! XD
Comment ID #3426
@Abelin:
Band kids often forget choir even exists.
And as a pianist and trombonist, I was thinking of how they related to me.
Comment ID #3638
@Pathetique: Yes, there aren’t any instrumentalists… but singing is usually the whole extent of musicality at high school level. Some girls also play the piano, and some boys pick up a guitar to pick up girls (never worked on me at all ^_^). But the main cast of BCB seem to be more inclined towards either sports (the boys) or smarts (the girls). I can’t really imagine Michael plucking guitar strings or Lucy sitting down by a piano.
Comment ID #3664
That is an interesting point.
I’ll assume there’s a band for the pep assemblies, but other than that there’s nothing too big.

WOO! Thank you Taeshi for transferring this thread.
Lucy - I had the same sort of outcast childhood she did. I can’t avoid seeing a connection between her and me. I built up the same kind of wall that she surrounds herself in. And it took me till I was 28 to tear it down. I hope it’s not the same for her.
Paulo - I couldn’t really relate to him for the longest time. But then he came clean, and the changes hes made for himself help. His desire to help when is friends are TRULY hurting is something I share.
McCain - No, I just don’t relate to him. My head is too high in the clouds to even come CLOSE to his level of bluntness.
Sue - Nope, sorry. Nothing here but a growing sense of disgust.
Abbey - Yes. I have had the same explosive temper has him. And it nearly landed me in trouble with the authorities just once. But once was enough.
Daisy - She’s still too “perfect” for me.
Michael - Much like Paulo, he tries to help when his friends need it. But right now I can’t say I relate to him terribly well. He handled his current situation with much less grace than I would have.
Lily - as ILB said: “See Michael” and to a lesser extent I say see Paulo too. At least with regards to helping people.
Kizuna and David: Yeah, I know how to make a mess of things, w/out even lifting a finger it seems.
Amaya - I fear I just never noticed her enough to make a connection.

*The night sky is black and unlit by stars, two shadowy figures are racing across the rooftops of a decaying factory. The first is a pirate, desperately clutching a laptop computer. The second is the Ninja. Abruptly the Pirate reaches the end of the roof. He turns to see that the Ninja has stopped a few feet away from him and is holding out his hand in a fashion that demands the return of the laptop. The pirate reluctantly turns it over to the Ninja.*
I have a feeling that the slightly skewed gender ratio for the forums might be part of the reason that it is easier for readers to connect with some characters than with others. But I could easily be wrong…
Comment ID #5029
I think it may be off mate. Most of the people in the introduction thread were male, yet most relate to Lucy, the female protagonist of the comic. ARe you implying sowt? XD
Comment ID #5031
Eh, it’d take me too long to think about it. I think what you NEED to do is to update that personality quiz thing that you did eons ago.
Comment ID #5034
Hmm. I think you are right… I’ll probably still get Lucy though
Comment ID #5069
Perhaps because Lucy is the most “male” of the females? People seem to relate to her because she is so flawed, and her inclination towards male activities (running over Princess Raindrop with a taxi, for instance) seem to make her more, uh, attractive to you boys. Something like that, anyway.
Comment ID #5091
Hmm, this conversation is starting to steer in an eerie manner. Though, it’s not her male attributes as such that make her attractive. I think it’s her defensiveness, mysteriousness and unsocial attitude that attracts people (ie. a bad girl XD. Not hurting that she’s the protagonist of BCB either)
It’s the same on the reverse (I mean, Alexandra Burke sings about how the badboys are always on her mind, even though Brad Pitt is more feminine than her XD)
Comment ID #5146
I’m inclined to say Lucy, but I don’t react violently or rudely towards anybody. I just kind of look like nothing’s happened to me while I’m bottling things inside.
I guess I relate to Lucy when her facade is down and she’s bawwing and stuff.
This desparately makes me wish I had a perfect facade, at least then people won’t know I’m a withdrawn person prone to angst, and I won’t seem so frustratingly annoying. Dammit I should’ve thought this through when making new friends.
As to many relating to Lucy or McCain: C’MON, it’s a WEBCOMIC internet forum, which usually attracts nerds and geeks who are not so socially popular or accepted. USUALLY. You’re gonna see people relating to those who have social problems but are likeable, because we want to think that we’re still likeable people deep inside!

*In the depth of a statistics laboratory at a well-funded research institution, the Ninja has just finished “borrowing” the supercomputer. Having run several calculations he has found a conclusion that must be shared.*
@the last half-dozen posters: It is official. Any continued investigation as to whether the population that reads BCB affects what characters are easiest to relate to will lead to an exponential increase in the creepiness factor of this thread!!! Since it is entirely my fault that we embarked down this sad path, I will attempt to reverse the trend.
I find it easiest to relate to Abbey, since I also had anger management problems, which I have (mostly) overcome. His intelligence is another thing that I can relate to, especially how he tries not to flaunt it. I can relate to the family problems issue, but this is despite having a fairly stable family, not because I have experienced the same sort of things (thank heavens).
Comment ID #5236
No, we haven’t got to the Freudian slips yet! Onwards and forwards with the creepiness!
Comment ID #5256
Well, we could bring in mine and Jay’s discussion (the origin of this thread in the fan forum, in fact).
That’s where I wondered if everyone online were harsh and violent outcasts with a tendency to lock up their feelings because they feel kinship with Lucy. Of course, most of the people in the poll voted for Sue, so that brings in a whole new level of creepy. She’s a lot more feminine, and without the obvious flaws… anyone of you “boys” want to come out of your closets? ^_^
Also, Freudian slips don’t need to be creepy. Just read this. :p
Comment ID #5259
And I just noticed:
“I will copypasta what he said”
Oh no, what will people think of me? ^_^
Comment ID #5297
*After “borrowing” the supercomputer again, the Ninja returns with the answer to ILB’s question.*
80% of readers will think that you are being hypocritical, 63% will think that you did that on purpose, 45% will question your gender and be smacked upside the head by your supporters, and 99.5%(including me) will wonder where that quote came from. (The total is over 100% because there will be some overlap, i.e. some will think that you are being hypocritical on purpose)
Comment ID #5400
Oh, sorry. Main post, Taeshi’s third line.
So I have 80% that consider me a hypocrite… How large is the percentage of my supporters? *sniffle*
Comment ID #5438
Don’t worry ILB.
My contribution to your supporters percentage bumps it up to at least 95% b/c I’m just that damned good. XD
And I’d still like to know what the heck it is about Sue that has so many people flocking to her.
Comment ID #5477
*Faced with another interesting question from ILB, the Ninja once again returns to “borrow” the supercomputer. As you might imagine, this is becoming increasingly hard as the authorities try to curb the repeated break-ins, but the Ninja prevails once more.*
Actually Jay, it would seem that with your support, ILB has defied the laws of physics and reached an unprecedented 105% approval and support rating… No I don’t know how that is possible, but computers don’t lie.

I’m not really sure who I identify the most with… I guess Tess more than others, because I was the outcast in almost every school situation I’ve been in, partially due to changing schools so often.
I guess I also identify with Daisy during the arc where Michael was ignoring her, because even when I DID make friends, I always sort of fell back into the whole ‘third wheel’ state of the group, more or less just tagging along when it was convenient for the others, with no one ever actively seeking me out when they wanted to hang out…
Comment ID #5535
I’m kind of like a lot like Mike and a little like Lucy
I’m kind and I try to help others like Mike. Another thing I can relate with him (sort of) is his long-distance relationship with Sandy, I once knew this girl in my first year of High-School for only a few months, then I had to move to another area and I really miss that girl (so much I made a sad poem about it) but enough with my Melodrama!
I feel I can relate to Lucy cause, for most of her life, she grew up alone, without any friends, like me. Except because she didn’t have many friends (Mike being the most notable friend) she was generally mistrusting and very defensive with other people (except Mike), me, because I grew up generally alone I now try to make as damn friends as humanly possible.
That’s how I relate to the main characters in BCB

Isn’t Kun the male form of a name? (presuming it Japanese) Shouldn’t it be Chan?
Comment ID #5563
@ Pronkat
Kun is the informal masculine way of addressing a person yes. San is respectful (Mr, Mrs or Miss, sir or ma’am), Sama even more so (Kami-sama = god for instance. Sama would be used when speaking to someone of much higher station. Chan is generally used for small children and young women, and Kun is used for young men.

Chan would be appropriate. San also wouldn’t really be uncalled for in this case, if only as it shows respect for the creator of a story. But really, Chan or no modifier at all would be correct for this situation.

I am making this topic because it was in the fanforum and I found it very intriguing, the original posts are here: http://bcbfanforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=chara&action=display&thread=62
__________________________________________
I technically want this to be ILB’s topic, so I will copypasta what he said:
The main part of the topic, however, is here. I’m just throwing the question out there, to see what kind of response we get.
Now, I raised this question in the “Lucy Fanclub” thread: Why does it seem like Lucy (and McCain) are the only characters people can relate to? jay and I (with some input from blaze and ved) brainstormed and argued, and found some common ground for the main characters:
- Lucy: She is a reserved person who is defensive when it comes to her emotions. This has led to her being left out and misunderstood by people that do not know her. Is this why many can feel kinship with her?
- McCain: He is not afraid to speak his mind, and when he states a fact he does it bluntly. As a result, he is an outcast. Do people relate with his know-it-allism?
- Paulo: Definitely a jerk with a heart of gold. He is like a lobster; soft on the inside but hard (and also reddish) on the outside. He does, however, have a boyish charm to him. But mayhaps his long time as a jerk has alienated him from us?
- Abraham: Why can’t people relate more to him? His backstory and pre-Daisy demeanour is sadly close to many. And his turnaround after he met Daisy is also typical for those who have experienced what he has. Is it too difficult to talk about, maybe?
- Tess: A girl with a past she is not proud of, and who is scorned because of it. We all have skeletons in the closet, and they may or may not have impacted people’s opinions of us. We should feel closer to her than we do - or is Tess’s skeleton so large that we have problems with feeling akin to her?
- Daisy: Daisy is highly intelligent, and she has a naively gleeful outlook on life. Her problem, however, is that people are easily annoyed by her persistent cheerfulness. Also, her portion of drama has been minimal compared to that of other characters - do these traits make her an alien?
- Sue: She is often left out, even though she tries to reach the foreground several times. And like Daisy, she is smart. Though she has recently been featured heavily, some may still empathise with her position. Or does Lucy take up that spot?
- Michael: A popular and happy boy with his head in the clouds. He is loved by many and can’t possibly love all of them back, so he settles on someone else. Years of being there for Lucy have made him more cynical and conceited; does this reduce him too much in our eyes to make us relate to him?
We never got to discuss the rest of the characters, but they do have some defining traits that people might relate to:
- David: Flimsy as a butterfly, but possibly as destructive as the Hulk. He is a comic relief, and there are many like him out there. (I know I am. ^_^) Or is he too Flanderised for people to recognise themselves in him?
- Kizuna: Always supportive of the love of her life, she does (did) tend to get hurt a lot. Her clumsiness is one thing many can relate to, as is her “lovesickness”. Maybe we don’t want to associate too closely with someone like her...
- Lily: A wise and maternal figure that does a lot and wants little in return. Perhaps too perfect for us?
- Amaya: I included her in the poll because many of us (or them, depending on where you stand) are silent and reserved, but still have a positive outlook on life. Or is she too obscure?
- Yashy: Come on. There must be at least one cheeky bastard around here. ^_^
- Augustus: We have little to go on when it comes to his personality, but his status in the comic is easier. He is a neutral character that hangs around and isn’t too much noticed - nearly all of his demeanour speaks of mystery. Do people have bad memories of him, possibly?
That should be that, mostly. Now, let us discuss the ‘why’s and ‘why not’s of the topic. Why can or can’t we relate to the BCB characters?
Oh, by the way, I voted Abraham. My history isn’t near as tragic, and I have a wonderful family, but I can relate to his person.
