I have to disagree with people who think the comic is almost over. Really, if you look at the reading guide, you have to come to a conclusion:

Everything before chapter 47 was, to some extent, backstory.

That indicates that there is a great deal of comic yet to be. Not to mention the fact that you wouldn’t so heavily promote a comic you were planning on ending in a short time.

As for the end… well, I strongly suspect Lucy will end up with Mike. Why? Because it is a shaggy dog story otherwise to some extent. Mike definitely will not end up with Sandy - that much is obvious for the same reason, but even more so. That said, it is POSSIBLE that Mike will end up alone by the end of it all. I doubt it, but it is possible.

I don’t know what exactly will strike Mike from his relationship with Sandy. My strong suspicion is that it will involve one of three: Sandy will prove not to be as “into” Mike as the other way around (there are some hints of this; when someone mentioned that Sandy looked familiar, I almost got the feeling that maybe Sandy has been in town and hasn’t bothered to visit Mike several times, possibly even lives far nearer than Mike believes; maybe she simply is interested, but not THAT interested); when Mike finally DOES find Sandy, and gets together with her, he discovers that he has been loving an idea more than a person; or that Mike will find Sandy, the two will be together for a while… and then Mike will realize that Sandy is eating his life, either intentionally, as a result of Mike only focusing on Sandy, Mike getting lonely (possibly after a fight with Sandy, possibly as a result of passive-agressive behavior on his own part), or Sandy will be too clingy (this last seems somewhat out of character from what we’ve seen of Sandy regarding LUCY, but interestingly, it does fit well with what happened to Sandy’s other friends). Those seem to encompass the possibilities. And it seems likely that either of the latter two would be more likely, simply because they could be more drawn out, with Mike gradually coming to the realization that he really has been pursuing something he doesn’t really want for one reason or another. The former is a much faster resolution, and would indicate more focus on the rest of the gang; plausibly it could occur after Mike has managed to alienate almost everyone, at which point the fact that this was resolved wouldn’t help because Mike would have already done the damage, and would have to spend a long time rebuilding.

Its also worth noting that, while Lucy really got screwed, she still obviously has feelings for Mike. But if Mike dumped/got dumped by Sandy, him quickly turning his affections to her would definitely hurt her feelings - she would feel like she was just a backup, rather than what he actually wanted, no matter how honest (or dishonest) he was being. In fact, this setup seems almost absolutely certain to occur, particularly if Lucy starts a relationship with Paulo - indeed, this would be quite the awful reversal for Mike, and unlike Lucy, he never really learned to be alone. It would hurt him a lot, I think, though Paulo x Lucy may never bloom due to Paulo’s love for Tess (though clearly he does love Lucy, I’m not sure if he has decided whether it is amorous love or brotherly love - I think he would LIKE for it to be the former, but that isn’t necessarily how things are for him).

As for why things are more likely to occur because that is how stories work… that’s because stories work in certain ways precisely BECAUSE it makes them strong. Much like how a huge proportion of western music is based on variants of a chord scheme, a lot of stories share a lot of similar elements.

Erebus’s hospital theory: this is actually very plausible, but you missed an important detail: what the accident would be. It wouldn’t be any of those things (well, Final Fantasy Cat’s gang is possible, I suppose, but&hellip. Why? Because it has to be water. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that it is near certain that some portion of Mike/Lucy’s future development will involve someone nearly drowning, regardless of scenario - it is the rifle on the wall, and it has to be shot off before the end. I’d wager either Lucy will nearly drown, violating Mike’s oath never to let another drop touch her, OR Mike being in danger will necessitate Lucy braving her fear of water, a nice parallel to the backstory which made her so afraid of it in the first place. Of course, it could not involve Mike; Lucy may have to save someone else. But if Mike and Lucy end up together, it’d have to be Lucy saving either Sandy or Mike, or Mike saving Lucy. For added points, Sandy does nothing useful, and possibly causes it or makes it worse, though it is possible her being absent could cause it as well (such as Mike going to meet her near a body of water again).

This ending, however, is far too neat and tied. As such, it would probably only be used if things have otherwise crossed the point of no return for someone, or if things are already set in motion that it is the way things will be; it won’t be used to circumvent the plot.

The hypothetical situation that David set to Paulo is definitely foreshadowing for Mike; the real question is whether Mike will make the right choice.

And yes, obviously, once Lucy and Mike’s relationships are sorted, the comic will be over. That is the conclusion of the comic. We just don’t know (for sure) how it will go. We can guess though, and I think the Lucy x Mike guess is the strongest simply on the basis of them being the center of the comics; if Mike ends up with Sandy, a lot of the story was, in essence, a shaggy dog story.

I’ve got the same feeling you do with regards to Sandy too. I suspect she already HAS a “other” where she is living and just can’t bear the thought of breaking Mike heart. That or, as you suggested, Mike will realize he’s living in the past.

I think the running gag is that we sexualize it because there has been a lot of talk about sex, but there’s only one character as far as we know who isn’t a virgin. Depending on whether or not you count what we didn’t see between Lucy and Paulo as sex.

The previous encounters with Tess & Lucy indicated that Paulo not getting sex may turn into to some kind of repeating gag. But mostly I just wanted to object to something.
