So I am typing on one of these goofy things right now. It’s a pretty great platform for reading the site! Or any other comics for that matter.

How many of you have or plan to get one? Do you have Kindles or other reading devices? I notice tons of you access the site with iPod touches, and, after all, this is just a big iPod touch...

Well, I love macs, I really do, but I have to say that I don’t like the recent Apple’s decisions.
Few Months ago I was still using PowerBook G4 and after some speculations about apple’s tablet, I’d decided to wait for Keynote. What I was hoping for, was light computer with multitouch interface but instead... You know. It’s a big iphone. It’s cool. But it is only a toy.
I have absolutely nothing against iphone, I use it every day, It’s a great phone, cool gadget, and there are thousands of awesome apps. I can understand lack of multitasking - it’s a mobile device.
But... No multitasking on iPad? Arghhhh. No multitouch friendly version of Leopard - that’s alright, I can live with OSX Mobile, but NO MULTITASKING? How many of you actually uses one app at the time? Right now I have six or seven programs glowing in the Dock (iTunes, Preview, Firefox, Adium, Skype...) That’s the proper way of using a computer, isn’t it?
Basically - that’s the problem. iPad is fun, but i have an iphone already, sorry.
It just makes me sad, that Apple Computers are becoming more of a toy company than, well computer company. They are still making great MacPros so, MacPro + tablet is still the only proper way of using a Photoshop.
(The other thing is that in Poland those gadgets are extremely overpriced. So, I’m still waiting for the REAL tablet from Apple.)
Sorry for my english, still learning.

I’ll get an iPad when it becomes available later (I’m in Europe). Mostly because I’ll develop apps for it and want my sites to look good on it. But also because it’s “the Internet in your hand” + book reader + gaming device.

It’s got full 1024x768 resolution, which is pretty much the minimum recommended for most websites; that’s a great feature. I played with it in the store, it’s a lot easier to type on than I thought it would be, though it was easier to make typos because there’s no tactile feedback; my left pinky kept hitting A and Q by accident. I really, really want one, but the price of admission is fairly steep considering I have no idea what I would do with it, and that you can get a much more versatile full-featured (albeit Windows-based) laptop for a similar price. Maybe it won’t have as good battery life or screen, but you can still do more with it. I think the iPad had the potential to be what the MacBook Air should have been, a lightweight mobile computing platform for a reasonable price given its performance. I could deal if it had something like a stripped-down version of Snow Leopard, but the lack of use of a file system or anything like that and wireless networking functions (act like a computer on a network rather than an iPod) with file transfer capabilities and stuff like video streaming, it’s not what I really want in a large-format tablet device. Not to mention, for some of the things I’d use it for, a stylus would be very handy to have, but the touchscreen is capacitive only, so it will only work with fingers. Why couldn’t it be like the Nintendo DS and work with both? If I could use a stylus with it, then I could use it to take notes in class with diagrams and such; maybe they could have a textbook app that could show a page of a textbook on one half of the screen and a blank page for taking notes on the other (but it would still let you highlight and such on the textbook side).

The new Windows tablet platform, as hastily thrown together and buggy/clunky as it will likely be, would sadly be a better option for me. I don’t particularly care much for Windows, though I do use it for gaming (I grew up on Windows and taking apart and fixing computers, so it’s not like I’m ignorant or afraid of a different platform).

BTW @Corvus:
It’ll have multitasking when iPhone OS 4 comes to it in the fall (even though OS 4 comes out this spring—for iPhone 3Gs and 3rd-gen iPod Touch only).
Though I do agree with you I would have liked to be able to use the iPad for Photoshop and such. Too bad that, besides not being able to use a stylus, you can’t get it to behave like a peripheral for your computer. It could have been a great drawing tablet, though I guess pressure sensitivity would be compromised because of the glass over the screen.

I thought iPads COULD multitask, I musta mistaken that for the new iPhone OS :-[

My verdict: who cares

It will never be good for artists, as the capacitive touch screen is miserable for stylus use, and cannot ever do pressure sensitivity. It’s a trade off - resistive touch screens work great with styluses but are terrible with fingers. I know what I use more often…

Multitasking is a very confused thing. All iPhones multitask, and there are apps on jailbroken phones to let you multitask third party apps as well. The 4.0 update will solve the limitations of not having background processes, which is great for things like Pandora and for making apps that currently have annoying pauses when switching in and out of them, but fundamentally it sticks to the single app at a time UI paradigm.

This is fine for the iPhone, but for the iPad it seems pretty unambitious. The iPhone doing proper many-app-on-screen multitasking is a huge UI challenge, but it seems ridiculous Apple’s fantastically clever UI people can’t be bothered to work out a way of having Safari on the left of the screen with AIM and an itunes controller on the right. I think it shows how lazy and complacent Apple can be when they know they have no competitors. Oh well.

Meh, I’ve got my i-pod nano (not with the camera) and I only use it for music, I really don’t need an i-pad.

I’ve already explained my reason for not getting a Mac, but as for the iPhone/iPod/iPad. I have no use for most of them, they’re too overpriced, and you don’t really own them after you’ve bought them since Apple can brick your shit if you jailbreak it.

Here you can buy our Honda Civic, but if you use spark plugs that we didn’t make we’ll EXPLODE YOUR FUCKING CAR.

Do you have any understanding of how jailbreaking and “bricking” works? Apple have never remotely bricked anything. The worst they do is sporadically plug exploits in the booting process and baseband, but the iPhone dev team is usually one step ahead anyway.

It’s worth noting there’s limited reason to jailbreak. What specifically do you want to do? Short of a few clunky, badly made utility apps and some shitty theming tools, all jailbreaking effectively allows you to do is pirate apps and unlock a locked phone. And unlocking has never mattered that much, as in the US T-Mobile is a shitty network and outside of the US most iPhones can be legitimately unlocked by carriers for free.
