Someone start throwing out awesome indie grunge band names. I mean, anything Seattle underground, pre-Nirvana (not that I’ve got anything against Nirvana, quite the opposite actually). I’ve got The Melvins and Green River and a few others, but I can’t get enough of this stuff.

Villainous Wasabi (Jerk) June 9, 2010, 7:14 PM EST.

Comment ID #41332

i have some more modern grunge if you want it but im pretty sure you can just go through sub pops records before nirvana because with a few exceptions (vaselines) its all pretty grungey stuff
also by the way if you dont have the vaselines stuff yet get that now

I’m makin’ a list but I don’t need to check it twice. Gonna put it all in chronological order and make a birth to death of grunge playlist. Or I would have if Alice in Chains hadn’t actually put out a good grunge album after the death of Layne Stayley. I hope it inspires some kind of grunge-revival but I won’t get my hopes up.

This is the acquisitions list I’ve set up for this hypothetical grunge playlist.

ALICE IN CHAINS. Sap. Dirt.
GREEN RIVER. Rehab Doll / Dry as a Bone.
GRUNTRUCK. Push.
LOVE BATTERY. Straight Freak Ticket. Far Gone. Dayglo.
MELVINS. Melvins. Houdini. A Senile Animal.
MOTHER LOVE BONE. Shine.
MUDHONEY. Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge.
MY SISTER’S MACHINE. Wallflower.
NIRVANA. Incesticide.
PEARL JAM. Ten. Vs. Vitalogy.
SCREAMING TREES. Dust. Sweet Oblivion.
SKIN YARD. 1,000 Smiling Knuckles. Skin Yard.
SOUNDGARDEN. Badmotorfinger. Down on the Upside. Ultramega OK. Flower.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. Core. Purple.
TAD. Infrared Riding Hood. Inhaler. 8-Way Santa.
TEMPLE OF THE DOG. Temple of the Dog.

If it’s not on the list, I already have it or I’m not interested in completing the set yet. And in the Word file, the ones I can’t snag off iTunes (which is about a third of the list) are highlighted. Because I don’t want to deal with the crab-fuckery that is finding and ordering the physical albums.

So, I know there’s a good Sub Pop representation on there, but I had to include some of staples I lack. Like AoC’s “Nutshell,” for example. Don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of the pre-mainstream stuff but it’s not a real history if I don’t go into Pearl Jam. I say this because, well, I’m not a fan of Pearl Jam. I’m hoping their albums on this list will convert me, I guess.

I do not fuck around when it comes to music. I’ll do the chronological thing once I actually have the albums, so far I can only do the list theoretically.

i would have most def added superfuzz bigmuff + early singles by mudhoney and bleach or even live at reading (they do some nevermind stuff but it is much rawer then on nevermind) by kurt cobain and the noorvanas

whf June 17, 2010, 12:07 AM EST.

Comment ID #45324

but that is lookin pretty good but you only need ten by pearl jam cuz they really arent that great

whf June 17, 2010, 12:08 AM EST.

Comment ID #45458

I still want the other two records as a cross section of their early ‘90’s career but I can put off getting them for awhile.

And I will definitely look into superfuzz bigmuff and mudhoney’s early singles. Main reason for Incesticide on the list is because I fucking crave “Aneurysm.” That song kicks so much ass.

J. Vincero (Jerk) June 17, 2010, 3:51 AM EST.

Comment ID #45462

they play a great version of aneurysm on live at reading just sayin

whf June 17, 2010, 4:05 AM EST.

Comment ID #45467

also if you want, in return for this swell list, i could make you a list of whateva genre you want really slong as its not metal which i am uneducated in

whf June 17, 2010, 4:13 AM EST.

Comment ID #45528

How the shit did I miss Superfuzz Bigmuff? That should’ve been on my list, I’d even seen videos for songs I wanted. Damn but I’ve been retarded lately.

I’m hesitant to put a live performances on the list buuuut I think I’m willing to make an exception where Aneurysm is involved.

And if you really felt motivated to make a list, I know next to nothing about punk except for a few that everybody know (Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Clash, Buzzcocks, etc.) and I’ve a few others on the Punk List when I go back into that phase but not much obscure stuff, and I do so crave obscure stuff. I guess Operation Ivy isn’t too obscure, but I’ve already got that (though I think the mellow early-Green Day cover of “Knowledge” is superior).

Also, what’s up with Rock Band Green Day? I want to see them do well, I really do, but I think they kind of jumped the gun making a game like that.

J. Vincero (Jerk) June 17, 2010, 7:41 AM EST.

Comment ID #45605

rock band green day is super lame
esp because they couldnt find a way to get 1039 sosh/ kerplunk on it and it only has like 2 or 3 songs from insomniac/ nimrod/ warning
the one saving grace is it has all of dookie
and uhhhh i can most def put together a punk list right away

whf June 17, 2010, 3:04 PM EST.

Comment ID #45639

ok essential punk list GO
and because i am a kind soul there are mediafire links
its sorted pretty much from most essential to least so uh make sure you have whats on top before you have whats on bottom

proto-punk
The Stooges - Raw Power
Velvet Underground - White Light/ White Heat
Patti Smith - Horses
MC5 - Kick Out The Jams
New York Dolls - New York Dolls
The Sonics - Boom
Death - …For The Whole World To See
Rocket From The Tombs - The Day the Earth Met the Rocket From the Tombs

i will do one for classic punk next then hardcore/ 80s punk then i will do whateverffgdfhg

whf June 17, 2010, 4:34 PM EST.

Comment ID #45686

Heh. And then Punk Revival? Maybe some Sum 41 and Good Charlotte? xD
You know I’m messing with you.

I own 1039 and Kerplunk, and those two are easily near the top of my list. The “Knowledge” cover was fucking stellar, and it’s not often you get an album where the band writes a song about the name of their band. I think “Going to Palasqua” or whatever it’s called is my favorite out of both of those albums.

Patti Smith? I guess I know nothing about her but I never pegged her for proto-punk. Then again I know nothing about her. I do like Kick Out the Jams though, even though I don’t own it yet. And I’ve already started my Velvet Underground collection.

When I do the chronological version of the punk list, I’m starting it with “My Generation.” Maybe a live, instrument smashing version if I can find one.

J. Vincero (Jerk) June 17, 2010, 5:44 PM EST.

Comment ID #45696

well green day wasnt originally called green day i forgot their original name but they named their band after that song after they had written it
i really do love the slower stuff on kerplunk but yeah going to pasalacqua is a great tune
the guitar solo on “dry ice” is pretty great JUST THROWING THAT OUT THERE

patti smith is most def protopunk imo
yes go download kick out the jams/ raw power RIGHT NOW

whf June 17, 2010, 6:08 PM EST.

Comment ID #45873

It was “Sweet Children,” and I don’t really blame them for changing the name. Had a different drummer too back then, might’ve switched when they went over to Reprise.

I’ve kind of come up with a rule for deciding which albums are worthwhile. Every album has to have at least three good songs on it. In some cases, an album can get by with only one song but only if the song is just seriously fantastic. I had to make that corollary for AC/DC albums, because iTunes doesn’t sell AC/DC, Black Sabbath, The Beatles and a bunch of others. Annoying, really.

yeah and its already crashing so fuck it
record labels are so in debt, theyll never be able to pay it back/ less and less artists are getting signed
and music should be free anyway the people need to be educated

As of last night, I own all but maybe eight albums on that list. Three of them I deliberately took off the list for the time being and five are in the mail from obscure vendors across the US (but if I had to guess, I’d say Seattle).

Is it all everything I’d hoped it would be? YES. Over and over: yes.

@ Jake: The ratio sounds like directions for foreplay.

I’m seriously going to write a treatise on grunge which may or may not involve me describing how listening to Screaming Trees releases endorphins comparable to an orgasm.

*snerrrrk* BWAHAHAHAHA!
*sigh* But seriously, what do you think?

Jake June 21, 2010, 7:42 AM EST.

Comment ID #47102

Hm… I dunno. The one thing I can say I did like about it was the obvious influence of U2’s The Edge (that’s the guitarist’s name, if you didn’t know) on the lead guitar. He does this thing, almost like a trickling sound. Apparently the lead guitarist of that band used the same technique to make a neat riff.

I’ve got this album coming in soon, I think you can appreciate the name: “One Thousand Smiling Knuckles.”

Pathetique, judging from your posts, we’ve some similar music tastes. Moonlight Sonata’s Mvt III is so furious, I love it - I hope I could play it one day…

Speaking of third movements, Brahms’ Symphony no. III, mvt. III is heart-wrenching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1trE3ms3AGo

Currently, a song most often stuck in my head is Debussy’s “Bruyeres,” which you can hear here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_g433nawnk
