The information is stored in a cookie. So it’s essentially tied to your browser—try a different browser on your same computer, and it should be blank again.

SuitCase April 22, 2010, 10:56 PM EST.

Comment ID #7718

Well, you see, I put my browser to not remember my history (the suggestions whenever I typed sowt in the search box ticked me off). So now I don’t have that cookie…

Pronkat April 24, 2010, 12:33 AM EST.

Comment ID #7792

Do you still get that error when posting though?

SuitCase April 24, 2010, 4:47 AM EST.

Comment ID #8130

No, actually I don’t anymore. And also, I just had to change my history options to custom and I can use the cookie again.

So I made the maths question disappear if you get it right once, plus I tweaked the source code to look pretty. And I implemented a bunch of different tweaks to make the page perform better—things like setting a long cache expiry for images, enabling gzip for everything, explicitly allowing public proxies to cache static resources, and putting some site resources on me.com so your browsers can download page resources concurrently from two hosts. What this should mean is that everything loads super fast. If it doesn’t, let me know!

I have a revised to-do list now. I eliminated a lot from it in the last week.

### Site to-do ###
==Technical==
The long line breaker can break html entities

==Website==
Mobile version of homepage?
Incentives section in extras?
Decorations for reading guide

==Forum and comments==
Comment editing
Comment profiles, w\ small avatars?

I know editing is the thing everyone wants, but is this a good complete list of all the requests for the site, forum, whatever else? Are there bugs I’ve yet to fix? As always, I appreciate any suggestions or help.

Suits, you are doing an outstanding job, and I just like to say good luck, we’re all counting on you.

I think topics with over 100 replies should show the first three comments, a show comment button and then the 5 latest posts.
It’s a pain to scroll past a long list of comments with an iTouch.

Ved of Flames April 25, 2010, 6:30 PM EST.

Comment ID #8488

Ved, maybe for the mobile version, but in general I think having the entire thread show on one page (which puts all previous inquiries in your face so you know what not to ask) is a good thing.

waffle911 April 25, 2010, 6:41 PM EST.

@Quack
Haha I picked that reference up. Oh yes, yes I did.

I remember back in the olden days when the forums didn’t remember who we were, and when we couldn’t separate the topics from the comments.

Love the improvements made so far~

ToastyJester April 25, 2010, 6:46 PM EST.

Comment ID #8522

Well yeah, make it a mobile feature.
On a normal computer I don’t mind long pages but an iTouch can’t jump to the bottom of the page with one button.

Ved of Flames April 25, 2010, 9:03 PM EST.

Okay, so I talked to our host and apparently the mysql database is hammering the disk IO. I think. So you’re not wrong that the site is sometimes slow, and I apologise for that. I’ll work on making it more efficient, though I’m not entirely sure how at this stage.

SuitCase May 5, 2010, 5:29 PM EST.

Comment ID #16416

Dunno if anyone asked for this yet, but is it possible to have a system to edit or delete posts in a thread? Like, I hate having a dead link just cause of a little flaw.

Ace May 5, 2010, 8:30 PM EST.

Comment ID #16459

Yes, that’s among the first things that was asked for. It’s hardly critical, and it would be somewhat difficult to implement, apparently so it’s not a big deal. Just proofread your posts. We all should, anyway.

Quacksalver May 5, 2010, 11:32 PM EST.

Comment ID #16555

Editing is entirely implemented, I just need Veronica to draw some things for it!

SuitCase May 6, 2010, 3:31 AM EST.

Comment ID #16559

there will be times where the site just wont load and the browser will time out
halfhour or so later and itll be fine though

whf May 6, 2010, 3:43 AM EST.

Comment ID #16560

Really? I’ve never seen it that bad before. It’s a 20 second delay before page loads, at most.

SuitCase May 6, 2010, 3:49 AM EST.

Comment ID #16562

It’s true, it happens quite frequently. I just get patient and do something else for a few minutes.

Ace May 6, 2010, 3:52 AM EST.

yeah what ace said

Mozilla times out when it takes too long. Same for Chrome. I have to close tabs and restart the laptop often when there’s a lag on the site…

Pronkat May 6, 2010, 6:15 AM EST.

Comment ID #16591

That’s kind of bizarre. Really? Most of the time pages load within 1-3 seconds, for me, but occasionally I get that 5-20 second delay. I have never seen it behave so badly like you say it does.

SuitCase May 6, 2010, 6:19 AM EST.

Comment ID #16596

Yeah, it’s recently started happening.

Pronkat May 6, 2010, 6:23 AM EST.

Comment ID #16613

This is awful. None of you people are MySQL experts, are you? I am having so much trouble working out what to do.

I just switched to InnoDB as the storage engine, maybe that fixes it?

SuitCase May 6, 2010, 6:56 AM EST.

I had a problem the other day where I couldn’t scroll down, but that seems to have gone away.

CaptainBaconMan May 6, 2010, 10:20 PM EST.

Comment ID #17893

Suitcase, I don’t have a problem for once! :D I did want to say that the edit option is cool and I fixed many an error with it so cheers! :D

Pronkat May 8, 2010, 12:45 AM EST.

Yaaaaaay Edit is cool!
See, I edited this.

Ace May 8, 2010, 12:47 AM EST.

Comment ID #17906

Hey. Hey, Suits.

You know that problem I was having before with the 403 errors?

You know your shiny new edit page?

Guess where the “edit post” button is taking me. :D

Quacksalver May 8, 2010, 1:37 AM EST.

Comment ID #17908

When? Do you see the edit form, and then get the error when posting? Is the edit sucessful anyway?

SuitCase May 8, 2010, 1:45 AM EST.

Comment ID #17922

Yes, just like before, when I hit “edit post” it properly edits the post, but takes me to what appears to be the same 403 error page.

Seriously, if there’s something on my end I can do that would be easier, just let me know, since I’m seemingly the only one still having this issue.

Quacksalver May 8, 2010, 2:19 AM EST.

Comment ID #17928

I don’t know, I kind of like having you as a test case for browsers that do an awful job of remembering referrrer data. I’ll try and fix it later!

Though, to be honest, our slow slow site performance is a bit more of a priority. I am still figuring that one out.

SuitCase May 8, 2010, 2:30 AM EST.

Comment ID #17929

Yeah, the server seems to slow to a standstill on my iTouch.
I think it’s my wireless server, but typically it starts to slow on the BCB site.
It’s strange cause the site doesn’t slow down on my home computer.

I also want an incentive section in extras! I voted sooo many times, but I missed one or two and now they don’t make sense!

Sirrush May 27, 2010, 5:41 AM EST.

Comment ID #28924

You can guess the filenames of the current one pretty well.

SuitCase May 27, 2010, 9:27 AM EST.

Comment ID #28947

Wouldn’t an incentive section kinda defeat the point of the exercise? At least without a few weeks of delay?

Yappy May 27, 2010, 11:24 AM EST.

Comment ID #28949

It’d be nice if the topics got split into multiple pages. Sure it might not be nice for some to go trough all the pages but it’s not nice to open a thread and spend 10 seconds just standing there while your browser is stuck loading up all the images (case in point, let’s edit BCB thread).

It could be adopted into a sort of pseudopage system too. It only loads a couple of messages from the start and when you scroll to the bottom it starts loading the next ones. Naturally there’d be a way to just start reading the thread from the end instead in which case it wouldn’t load most of the stuff in the middle of the thread. Perhaps just the three first post and seven or so last ones. Something along the lines of the comic comments.

Pixelnator May 27, 2010, 11:27 AM EST.

I want to do this, but it’d take a bit of time to work out. Maybe in a month or so.

Hey SuitCase have you ever thought of using PhpBB it’s a free code pake that you can edit to look like this site but it’s a forms system that has Privet emailing profile pages avi system and all kinds of nice things plus it has plugins cor a chat system (video or reg) but ya it’s all free i have used it in a few websites i have made and i saw you wanted to do some work on the forms you have i just thought to let you know there is a quick simpole badass thing out there to save time and efort so you could focus on your studies

if you already knew about phpbb just pretend you never seen this post

also if you ever need help I am a web developer it’s been my main job for many years ill be glad to help if you ever need it

PS: spelling bad sorry in a rush

Senator Splash May 27, 2010, 4:25 PM EST.

Comment ID #29544

Yeah, phpbb is a horrible bloated mess. The teething issues of running on a home-grown script like the one used here are annoying, but to me, ultimately less annoying than having to deal with all the cruft of a heavy messaging board with things I don’t think anyone needs.

SuitCase May 27, 2010, 9:58 PM EST.

Comment ID #29565

ok just trying to help but the things it has likr moddorators and admins help keep things good and running faster on the site

Senator Splash May 27, 2010, 10:32 PM EST.

Comment ID #29622

Yeah, that was the kind of culture that annoyed me enough about the fan forum to make the one here. I really dislike the idea of moderators and rules and structure to everything.

SuitCase May 27, 2010, 11:54 PM EST.

Comment ID #29772

I didn’t check all the suggestions listed already, so forgive me if this was already mentioned.

I had this idea when I was playing in that RP thingy, where I would post a reply to a certain entry, only to notice there have been 5 replies in between that entry and mine, and it can get really annoying. While I realize that this is usually not a big deal with other topics, I feel it’s important enough to Warrant an improvement on the site - by that, I mean that Souppy, perhaps you should code a way for the website to, after we click post reply, check if there are more recent posts that we haven’t seen yet. If so, it could possibly warn us and show the newer posts, you know what I mean? Sorry If I’m being cryptic, I’m tired as heck. But yeah, one of those new post-checking systems would be awesomesauce.

Spradic Zoom May 28, 2010, 3:03 AM EST.

I know what you mean, that’s a useful function. I’ll try to implement that later.

SuitCase May 28, 2010, 3:14 AM EST.

Comment ID #29822

Noticed that as well when reading the rp game. Good idea, however you could always have 2 pages open(mozilla firefox) and refresh one while posting on the other.

Stereotypical critic May 28, 2010, 5:07 AM EST.

Comment ID #30031

I tend to do what critic says. Still… It’d be nice if you could implement something a rather like the archive tracker: a little live-updating banner a couple of pixels high that, say, goes from “0” to “3+” interim posts, as a way of seeing how far behind you are?

Having a post-click late warning is probably not the right way to do it, anyway. If you’re OK with being one post behind, by the time you’ve cleared the warning away you’re half-a-dozen behind.

Yappy May 28, 2010, 10:51 AM EST.

Comment ID #30560

I fear that having two browsers active on a forum would drastically increase webtraffic. I even think that our game was what was causing some server lags that I noticed, so I don’t think that using two browsers is very wthical.

Spradic Zoom May 29, 2010, 4:10 AM EST.

Comment ID #30566

Yappy, I don’t totally see what you mean. Do you mean a little field that refreshes every 30 seconds, either displaying nothing if there are no new posts since you loaded the thread, or displaying “1 recent post not displayed” if there has been?

I like the idea as something useful to users but I fear that’d be pretty stressful on the server, as every open thread page in the world would be constantly pinging back and running database queries to check if new posts have been made. Surely there’s something in the middle.

SuitCase May 29, 2010, 4:19 AM EST.

Comment ID #30578

Just have the”+x” counter refresh every time you reload the forum index, with the “+x” based off the last time you actually viewed that page.
