It would let yu know how many people had posted since you last saw it, not just the most recent poster, letting you know how far behind you were.

And is that crazy good or crazy useless? I often can’t tell the difference.

I’m suprised nobody asked for a seperate page by page archive of the comic…?

Radial July 2, 2010, 3:29 AM EST.

Comment ID #53250

Like, the image files collected in a .zip?

SuitCase July 2, 2010, 4:04 AM EST.

Comment ID #53336

No, as in a page by page link instead of chapter by chapter.
It’s real difficult to find a spesific page if you’re looking for one, unless I missed out on some function that allows you to go to a page via linking instead of url editing.

^No idea if it requires zip’ing but it kinda works like this:

http://suicideforhire.comicgenesis.com/ archive.html

Each page from a chapter can be clicked respectively, not just the chapter itself. It’d help those deep in a chapter but decided to stop.

I can’t think of an aesthetically pleasing way to do the page by page thing.

I did however upgrade the forum page and mobile header to look nice on iPhone 4 displays.

i have a small request. could we get a “back to forum index” link at the bottom of the threads, under the post a reply box? I find having to go all the way back up to go back, especially on some of the longer threads, a little annoying.

@SuitCase
Maybe you could place little buttons showing a peek of a page, kinda like how Axe Cop does it (or like how the old Extras Fan Art section was handled with the small peeks of the artwork under the corresponding artist), minus the short intros because of the overall length of BCB.

http://axecop.com/index.php/acepisodes

Or you could make a chapter archive, wherein when you select a chapter, every page of said chapter loads in one page simultaneously or something, kinda like how Better Days and Jack does it.

http://www.jaynaylor.com/betterdays/archives/ chapter-1-honest-girls/
http://www.pholph.com/whole_arc_viewer.php? id=5&sid=383

Or you could go the simple(?) way and make a list beneath each chapter, like how Brawl in the Family and CAD does it.

2 suggestions for the forums

My first suggestion is to have a different color for your post. Say you post on a popular topic. The next day you want to see if anyone replied to your post, so you read through the entire topic hoping to find your name, which takes a while.
I say you should be able to see your posts in a full color, like blue for example. Only you could see your post in blue, and everyone else would see your post in white.

My second suggestion is to add a “Go directly to bottom” on the topics. It will make replying to topics easier, so you won’t have to drag the bar all the way to the bottom.

there does seem to be a go directly to the bottom thing to click….it just happens to be at the bottom of the page

SpaceMouse,

For you, anything

SkylineFaux,

I enjoyed your links! I don’t see the value in tiny thumbnails, they don’t tell you much about dense comic pages. I don’t like the many-pages-at-once model, for user-hostile reasons (ad displays are limited), community-building reasons (I like comments for each page visible and easily postable) and technical reasons (that is a lot of bandwidth per view for the big chapters!)

The only thing left is the list model, which is kind of dull. The old site had a list like “1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8” below an 8 page chapter. I could do this, but I feel like it’d clutter up the archive page for not much usable purpose. The only thing I can think of people wanting to do that’s currently hard is to skip to roughly halfway through a longer chapter. Is there a pressing enough need for me to fix that? Are chapters that are 10-30 pages long that annoying to churn through?

Michael,

This is a great idea. I just tried to implement a basic version of it.. did it work? Do you like it? I can colour the speech bubbles if you like, but I don’t have the time to make the images right now.

I hacked in a skip-to-bottom link at the top. I don’t really like it, but the end goal is going to be pagination and a link on the threadlist to the most recent post, so it will be erased in time. I just don’t have the time to do it properly right now.

Goldwulf, ILB,

Huh? I don’t understand how there was a link that displayed only in IE.

SuitCase September 13, 2010, 1:43 PM EST.

I know for sure the “Jump to the Bottom” link exists in the mobile version too, although in IE it is indeed at the very botton of the page, looking rather out of place.

Just a tiny interjection on the list model. I’ve thought of a way you could install it while keeping that clean look to the site - you could make that progress bar behind the chapter and page number grabbable, with its movement linked to the different pages, i.e. it increases in jumps. When released, it links you on.

Not denying it’s a helluva coding job, but it’d work. Basic users would never notice it, and the pros could skip through to specific pages in moments.

Alternatively, for users looking for a certain page, have you considered adding a hidden transcript?

(Ooh! And I like the highlighted last post title!)
(AND it’s been applied retroactively? I… I’m overcome with emotion… :blush: )

Having the ability to jump to the bottom of the thread will be helpful for longer threads. But now you have two jump to the bottom of the page options in the mobile version.

Yappy,

The grabbable status bar thing sound useful, but non-obvious. I don’t know.. I feel like it’d be too confusing. It’s an idea I was thinking about, but don’t think I’ll do.

Can you explain the transcript? Is it so that you can do a sitewide search on Google, or something else? Do you know of a comic that does it?

Starberry,

Not anymore! (Thanks.)

Yes, Miw hit the nail on the head. Good to see the button at the top now, though.

Also, it’s fun being red. ^_^

To be blunt, yes. I find myself playing a game of roulette with the address bar trying to find a page I’m looking for, especially for the longer chapters. Maybe you could just implement them to chapters with 5 pages and up? That way, it wouldn’t clutter up the archives page as badly if you decide to implement it.

PS. That was fast. Really liking the post identifier.

PPS. You may want to check the link for the Forum Index at the bottom of the threads. It doesn’t work.

This is Kaxbe testing something out….
Whenever I would change my screenname, previous screennames of the same name would also be highlighted.

I’m changing my screenname to Skyline Faux to see if his screenname also lights up.

EDIT: It does.

@SuitCase: the link back to the forum index at the bottom is broken :(

@SuitCase

It’s much more easier to find my name in this giant post now, thanks :D

And the “skip to bottom” button works great, but the forum index button takes me to a broken link, so you might wanna fix that.

I fixed it!

SkylineFaux,

I will work this out someday. Probably will just add numbers to the Archive page somehow.

@Souppy, re: transcripts

That’s the basic idea, yes. You have the dialogue for each comic stored away behind the scenes, and use a specialised search engine to pick it up again.

One route is OhNoRobot. They allow you to add a slice of Javascript to the comic display pages, which gives abutton asking readers to transcribe the page. You then receive the text, and if you’re happy with it then it becomes the page’s transcript. Alternatively, I believe you can just upload them yourself.

What you do with it then is up to you, and how you want to use their API:
Chronillogical takes the direct approach, with an attractive(ish) search box near the comic.
Dinosaur Comics give it a back seat, with a search link at the top, and a tiny box at the bottom.
Questionable Content has one too, but they don’t seem to be using it; it’s still ready to be linked to, though.

Given your preference for doing things on-site, I recall Sandra and Woo using their own system, where they add their own transcript directly below the comic. Personally, I think it looks a bit ugly, but for a wordy comic, it’s useful for screenreaders. However, the site’s down just now.

If you wanted to follow the transcription route, I’m sure you could come up with something better than these examples. But these are just examples that sprang to mind.

‘Scuze me if this has been posted before, I didn’t read it all.

But BCB lite. Like, how on myspace, you can view profiles as lite so it could load faster.
That’d be great for me cause my computer is old so I have to use my phone. I hate typing all this stuff out on my phone, and I can’t post pictures with it.
Your site makes my computer freeze. ;_;
