Movies: 3D or 2D?

Comment ID #3755

When they offer a movie in 3D, which do you prefer to watch it in? Do you think that it is too gimmicky, or do you think that it actually helps the movie?

This is not an excuse to use the media tag.

I actually don’t give a damn about it. If I can’t watch 3D, then fine, I’ll watch it 2D, because good movie is good, and bad movie is bad.

Well, what about those “made for 3D” movies, like Spy Kids 3D? What about The Polar Express? I feel that that movie is made better when in 3D.

if every movie used 3d as well as how to train your dragon, then hell yeah i would.

@whatanamavds: I still have yet to see that movie.

GO WATCH IT. NOW. WHY ARE YOU STILL AT YOUR COMPUTER?!?

Dragons was a great movie!! It doesn’t compare with any of the Dreamworks or Disney classics, but it comes close. ^^

Why must every movie now be in 3D? It’s not that cool a function. Oh wow. A red rubber ball came off the screen at me. The character is pointing in my direction. Dr. Manhattan’s blue glowing naughty bits. Wow.

Moddy Auld April 12, 2010, 2:29 AM EST.

Comment ID #3780

@abelin i think it is pixar-tier

whatwhatw April 12, 2010, 2:31 AM EST.

Comment ID #3782

@Moddy Auld: 3d is about more then just coming out of the screen, it creates a feeling of depth when looking at the movie making it feel like instead of just watching a movie on a flat screen, you feel as though you are looking through a window at whats going on and could just walk through the movie screen to go into that world.

Senshuro April 12, 2010, 2:49 AM EST.

Comment ID #3783

Gotta say I’ve been enjoying the movies I’ve seen in 3D so far. Some are even better in 3D, like Senshuro said, it gives it depth more than just a finger pointing in your face gimmick. I enjoyed Avatar in 3D, and I think Alice in Wonderland woulda been trippy in 3D and made it even better.
Gonna try to Catch How to Train Your Dragon in 3D… everyone is saying that movie’s great even for a kids movie.

Gescean April 12, 2010, 2:55 AM EST.

How to Train Your Dragon sounds retarded and generic. How can it possibly be interesting?

We live next to an IMAX theatre so maybe we should see it. But the concept of a kiddy Dreamworks 3D film set I’m a fantasy world turns me way off.

SUITCASE: JUDGE NOT
its indicated on rottentamatoes that the reviews for the film were 97% positive
do you know just how fucking ridiculous that is
not even for a movie in general, but for an ANIMATED movie made by DREAMWORKS with a STUPID TITLE and a TERRIBLE TRAILER
seriously, the movie is amazing. it is up there with pixars best in my opinion, and anyone who dismisses it is missing out.

I always save a pair of 3D glasses just so I don’t have to pay the extra money. While How to Train your Dragon might have been impressive no amount of 3D could save Clash of the Titans or Alice in Wonderland.

(nameless) April 12, 2010, 5:16 AM EST.

Comment ID #3809

Clash of the titans and Alice in wonder land were never actually made for 3d but the 3d was shoehorned in anyway and that whys it so terrible. Movies made for 3d like Avatar or CG movies make for really good 3d.

One thing about how to train you dragon I noticed was while that movie was really good it was also Monsters Inc. with dragons and vikings instead of monster and children. There’s a society that only really know one way (dragons are bad / harvest screams from children) and some oddball main character befriends one of the enemy (kid / dragon) and learns everything everyone knows is wrong. Then there’s a sequence of hide the enemy from everyone they know with hilarious results that also teaches the main character some very important facts they would change how everyone thinks (dragons are friendly / laughs make more energy then screams). Then there’s a big scene where the kid/dragon is found out and some fight breaks out where the main character rescues their new friend and shows every he was right and they were wrong. Then everyone lives this new lifestyle and lives happily ever after. You could probably list more though I say How to Train your dragon was way better then Monsters Inc.

Chronos April 12, 2010, 6:44 AM EST.

Comment ID #3824

for those who didn’t know, how to train your dragon was a book before a movie. I forgot how the book went, and haven’t seen the movie, so I cannot compare the two, but I thought that it was worth mentioning.

3-D is good when done right. It has gotten better lately with the change in technology, but there is still a large rift between those that do it awesome and those that make it suck

I watched HTTYD in 2D and it was still awesome.
I personally thinkg 3D is more something for children, like Spykids was mentioned before- or Toy Story 3 which is new to come should be 3D, but like other movies, to make them 3D might help the quality of it, but in generel I have to agree to fourward, it doesn’t matter if the movie is in 3D or 2D as long as it is a good movie.

Lisa April 12, 2010, 10:17 AM EST.

I prefer 2D because 3D scares me. Not just because large things come jumping out of the screen to attack me for no apparent reason, but because I somehow feel that 3D should be exclusive to the real world. I don’t know exactly why, though.

ILB April 12, 2010, 4:01 PM EST.

for me, watching the movie in #D for too long hurts the hell out of my eyes. There were many times where I actually did have to take off the glasses and close my eyes due to pain.

@suitcase

My opinion is that it has the usual dreamworks stuff, the almost EXACT same situation as all the others. But I gotta admit, I only watched it for the dragons and toothless was the only one that looked cute :C

The ending was really good, though.

fourward April 12, 2010, 4:14 PM EST.

Comment ID #3924

I’d watch either, but it depends on the genre. Animated and proper CGI are great for fantasy, action or sci-fi movies. But I’d hate it if it started creeping into other genres like non-animated comedy for example…

Pronkat April 12, 2010, 4:25 PM EST.

Comment ID #3931

HTTYD follows some of the base genric patterns one could expect for a kids movie, but it does throw in some occasional differences from the usual that were rather enjoyable such as the main character not miraculously coming out of the last battle completly unscathed.

Also from what im reading it seems that most people are against 3d due to the gimick of things popping out of the screen, but 3d seems to be steering away from that trick to focus more on creating depth so though its not perfect, it can be an enjoyable feature for CGI movies.

@Suitcase: I actually didn’t like Shrek 2… even as a kid. I they tried to keep the attention of the parents also by putting a few risqué jokes… but it would have lost several children…

Sequels are rarely good, especially when it follows the base generic pattern of the norm, Shrek 2 was an alright sequel for kids but nonetheless was still another generic sequel made to get box office sales by riding off the original movies popularity, so I can honestly say no i dont like the movie shrek 2, and instead of prejudging it just give it a chance and if you dont like it, you can just come back in rub it in everyone’s faces about how you thought it sucked and we were all wrong about it. ^-^

Anyways, I believe that the fact that “Jackass 3D” exists is just further proof that 3D movies are plain terrible. It’s gimmicky and it becomes the main selling point of the movie. (I mean, after all, who in the world watched “Alpha and Omega”?)

I agree on Chronos, 3D for a film designed for it (e.g. Avatar) it works well, you have parts that work well with the sense of things being centimeters away from your nose. Other than that, if the film’s good enough 3D should only really accentuate the good points. Some films have kind of smothered the story with scenes to throw things at the viewer. And what about Despicable Me?

Elliot November 11, 2010, 9:18 PM EST.

Despicable Me was a fun film, although my 3D glasses did not work properly so that somehow ruined that sense. I am glad that it did, however - it worked perfectly without large things being hurled in my face. ^_^

How to Train Your Dragon was, despite being a Pixar movie, was very fast paced and enjoyable. Go see it Suit, and take Tae with you. Trust me, and defer the wisdom to your (likely) elder.
