I don’t think I like the last panel of the first banner. Dunno why, too tacked-on “humorously edgy” for me, Especially considering teachers don’t really have a big role in BCB.

In the second (horisontal) one I thunk the layout doesn’t work that well, thick black lines are distracting.

Next 3 are pure win. The gif is not very easy to follow, but it’s always a problem with animation, it’s necessary to conserve space, and the panels chosen work great.

Don’t honestly have anything to say about the other pics.

Come to think of it, I think the Abbey/Daisy animation could be improved by following the scene up to right before they kiss, since they start screaming “ARE YOU READY?!” “YEAH! HERE IT COMES!” That would be an epic ending.

Oops. Can’t believe I forgot this thread. :P

(1) is brilliant - I think you could easily use this with good reception all round.
(2) is pretty good given the difficulties over text in leaderboards. Fizmat’s right about the lines, though - they should really be cut down.
(3/4) are awesome and, as Jerk says, a definite badge-worthy picture. Actually, throw one in with each order to spread the word.
(5)… I’m torn on. It’s a great scene for animating, but I don’t know. It screams “direct from comic”, which is double-edged. It shows honesty and accuracy - things lacking in many ads - but at the same time it’s clearly not designed as an ad, and so (totally incorrectly) seems lazy. I realise it’s probably taken a lot of effort to do, but it doesn’t look like that. :-/
The same scene redrawn for that shape of container could work perfectly, though. May I also mention that the title card at the end looked particularly attractive - kudos to whichever of you put that together.
(6/7) both work brilliantly in my opinion. Very funny, very accurate.

And I’ve no complaints over the buttons - they all look attractive, and I just wish I had a website to put them on. :P

The title card makes me cringe. It feels pretentious to me. I couldn’t think of a truly unpretentious way to do it, though.

SuitCase July 7, 2010, 10:34 AM EST.

@Suitcase: Well, this IS a high-class comic. Don’t be ashamed of that. :D

I did promise before to get back to you with some dramatic poses (and utterly unnecessary captions). I realise this may all be redundant now, but… eh. It gave me something to do.

@ Souppy: The title card is fine and not all that pretentious. But if you feel it is edit it out, you don’t need our approval and it wouldn’t utterly destroy the ad anyway.

J. Vincero (Jerk) July 7, 2010, 1:14 PM EST.

Comment ID #56164

Eh. I really do like it; maybe I’m just pretentious, but I honestly think it looks stylish and suitable.

But what Jerk said. I’d be happy to see other designs you’d rather we consider.

Yappy July 7, 2010, 1:30 PM EST.

I like the Daisy compilation one (mostly cuz it was my favorite scene of the comic so far) but it would be great if it could go a bit smoother. Idk how you could do that, but if you could find away, that’d be amazing. The Abbey and Daisy Tower/leaderboard ads were also pretty neat. Woulda grabbed my attention.

Those sample ads are pretty good (though I don’t get the Courage Lucy one.) I like the idea of humor based ads, partially because that’s what caught my eye (I was brought here by the dating sim ad.) Personally, I think taking strings of panels from the comics that form a simple story. Using the previous arc as an example, perhaps the panels leading up to PauloxRachel or PauloxJessica, or the two panels from page 27 (“You know that Somali kid?” “What about him?” “WE BANGED HIM!”,) followed by some catchphrase for the comic. (BCB: Angst Kats or something better than what I can think of at the moment.)

Comment ID #56904

You could make a .gif that has three scenes along with the theme. Romance, Drama, and Cats. 3x a week!

Or, one panel romance, one panel punching someone, one panel kitties.

(You get my drift!)

95% of the characters are cats, how can you get more cats than that?

(Answer: You gas-chamber the 5% canine.)

J. Vincero (Jerk) July 8, 2010, 4:19 AM EST.

Comment ID #56926

Considering all of the cast, I think they’re actually 50% cats…Granted you don’t see too many of the dogs often. (I’m a very technical person >_>;)

As far as the ads go, I personally just like the originals, the newspaper, and the buttons. The lucy one made me laugh, but I don’t know if I’d click on it. Maybe. The Daisy scene one is a good sum up of the comic, but it seems corny and gives a new reader no reason to believe she’ll hook up with Mike in the story (which would probably eliminate a lot of the suspense/drama especially during the “Awakening” arc). The other DaisyxAbbey one has the same problems, but is better than the former imo. They both also make it seem like they’re the primary characters of the comic.

Pathetique July 8, 2010, 4:51 AM EST.

Comment ID #56949

Who says Daisy doesn’t hook up with Mike in the end? A lot changes after the pregnancy arc.

Oh I remember hearing about that arc.

@ Pathetique: No, you’re just splitting hairs over something asinine. Don’t be the “technical” guy. I swear have nothing against you, but nobody likes the technical guy.

I wouldn’t argue, Jerk. I’ve seen some of Suitcase’s old arguments on dA and he is a frightening opponent. I don’t think you want to take on his new apprentice.

Hi, just followed the “newspaper” ad here from topwebcomics.com. Read few a few strips, great work!

The ad reminded me of a great song by The Weakerthans called “Plea from a Cat named Virtute” Have you ever heard it?

The old date sim one brought me here. The “Deck her in the face” thing was what really caught my eye cause it was like, “This makes it sound like it won’t be a typical sappy love story” It really was an attention grabber.

Perhaps for an idea, (And forgive me if it’s been done or thought of already). If it would be a short panel comic, or animation, maybe show mike moving with his arms open towards Sandy, (Show her back only so as not to reveal her character before reading) And as he’s about to hug her have it shift to Lucy (Who is blushing from him coming at her with open arms) and she punches him in the face or something Lucy like. Have a slogan like. “Showing affection in more ways than one.”

I dunno now that i think about it it sounds a bit awkward, but it was just a thought i had.

Flash August 9, 2010, 7:08 PM EST.

That’s not a bad one. I really like the idea of an animation.

Eriko, I’d like to listen to that but whenever I see your post I’m in a circumstance where I can’t listen to music. :(

Just found this on Facebook:

Ironically, it was on the Fan Page already advertising BCB, which as usual shows Facebook hitting its keywords yet missing the point. :P Still.

Nice to see there are some more (new?) ads floating around the place. Still looking for further ideas, or is your advertising scheme settled for now?

Is that effective? It’s based off a tower ad that I was disappointed in when I tried to make it leaderboard-size. I don’t use it all that often.

I ended up seeing the “PAY ATTENTION TARDS” one on icanhascheezburger.com of all sites. Cardinal sin, I know, but the first thing I thought was, “Hmm. Kawaii-desu, sparkles, the usual… wait, what? Maybe I’ll just see what this is about.” Taking the classic image and flipping on its head really piqued (?) my interest. In lieu of an actual idea on my part, more of that would be brilliant. :)

Elliot October 22, 2010, 8:45 PM EST.

Comment ID #109486

Is that an actual ad, Dritch? ^_^

ILB October 22, 2010, 8:48 PM EST.

Comment ID #109509

@ ILB: Actually? Yes. Suitcase made something like that and was considering putting it up. I didn’t really think he’d do it.

I have a new idea for an advertising model: You print pamphlets and go around the neighborhood tying them to doorknobs like Chinese restaurants or lawn-mowing services.

J. Vincero (Jerk) October 22, 2010, 9:14 PM EST.

Comment ID #109515

Or garbage bin emptying services, tied appropriately to the handles of the garbage bins. ^_^

Oh well. It seems that BCB has some frightfully diverse advertisements. ^_^

ILB October 22, 2010, 9:18 PM EST.

Comment ID #109524

I think you have to go one of two routes when limited to the advertising space Soupgun has: you either make something that conveys the feeling of the comic to attract that specific group of readers that might be interested in it (which, considering brevity, is almost like trying to describe a year’s worth of seasons in a haiku) OR you go for these outrageous, eye-catching statements that attract more people and just hope that some of them stick.

And if he wants outrage, he knows I’m always right here.

J. Vincero (Jerk) October 22, 2010, 9:24 PM EST.

Comment ID #109534

Hee. I think it is working. ^_^

I came across the dating sim one on MSPA. I was disappointed that I couldn’t actually download a game to punch people in the face, but hey, it got me here all the same :D

Ubertoast October 22, 2010, 9:42 PM EST.

Comment ID #109551

There should be an official sim, but no one wants to subject themselves to fiery doom of suggesting that Taeshi do the art.

I’m pretty sure someone already tried, and no one heard from him ever again.

No one.

J. Vincero (Jerk) October 22, 2010, 9:46 PM EST.

Comment ID #109569

Oh, well that sucks. I COULD use my experience in game dev to do one in my free time… but only if there is great demand and the powers that be approve.

I mean, that COULD be classed as advertising, right?

Ubertoast October 22, 2010, 9:57 PM EST.

Comment ID #109572

Yeah. Hell, you could put a button that breaks the fourth wall and takes you directly to the comic at all times. But right now it ain’t feasible, I don’t think.
