Point made. Why the image though? Can’t see much wrong there, myself.
Comment ID #58337
So far, they’re not making much, but that’s why I put them everywhere they’d fit. I want to see just how much they can make. This is all subject to revision.

Experimentation’s the only way to go with stuff like this. On a positive note, might I congratulate you guys on your PW ads breaching $10/day? Not quite retiring money, sure, but pretty impressive this early in the game. ![]()

I hate online ads. All they do to me is make me want to add snarky comments to them.
I got ripped in 4 weeks.
So you’re a cheap t-shirt?
How many zebras do you see?
None, just a whole lot of steak.
Lose weight following this 1 simple rule.
Stop eating.
How many squares do you see in this image?
Put a picture of my boss in there and I’ll see one.
So on and so forth. Freakin’ driving me crazy.
Comment ID #58423
Maybe we could harness the power of your comedy to generate $10+ CPM in revenue.
Comment ID #58425
How targeted are these ads, out of curiosity? They seem fairly generic.
Comment ID #58427
Why do you love your Toyota Carolla? Tell us your story.
Well this one time, at the demolition derby…
We got crazy mad shirts yo!
I think Yo would prefer some shirts that are only slightly perturbed.
This is the end.
Nooooo. The top of the page is the beginning.
How many eyes does she have?
Enough to give me nightmares.
SuitCase, take what you want, I’ve got more than enough crazy to go around.
Comment ID #58438
@yappy that ad is ridiculous, that’s all.
The problem i posted is fixed now(The real one).
Comment ID #58441
They’re almost completely generic. They seem to be somewhat region-based when they feel like it, for example I saw an Optus (Australian phone company) ad a few times. Overall they look non-targeted, though maybe IMVU is aware of some of our demographic..?
Anyway, wow! Technorati sure isn’t too bad on this first day. Our pageviews are inflated at the moment as we’re gathering new readers with an expensive ad campaign, but together with Project Wonderful, right now we’re making something like $30 a day. That’s alarmingly close to our $50\day target already!
Comment ID #58451
I’m seeing blank boxes here. And I don’t even have AdBlock.
![]()
Comment ID #58456
That’s unusual. Is Javascript disabled? Do the Project Wonderful ads show up? The only reason you should get blank boxes are either because you block the Technorati Media Javascript, or if it is still loading (I delay ads to load after the page loads, so as not to increase page load times)
Comment ID #58457
The ads so far on Chrome are fine. No odd graphic mishaps. ![]()
Comment ID #58472
@SuitCase
No ads are showing up at all here. And no, Javascript is enabled. I still get ads elsewhere, just not here. Weird.
Comment ID #58478
Yeah, it is weird. I’m not sure what to say. It should work. I would imagine you have some kind of ad blocking going.
Comment ID #58493
It could just be my internet connection, but sometimes i just get boxes. This only happens about 12.5% of the time though, so no worries! annnnnd, a lot of the ads are retarded, do you choose which ads get show, or is it randomness dictated by project wonderful?
Comment ID #58499
Project Wonderful don’t do the ads except for the horizontal one at the top and the two at the bottom. I have no choice over what is displayed by Technorati.
Comment ID #58844
Comment ID #58856
Maybe you need to refresh the page layout? I’m not seeing that.
Comment ID #58859
It only happens when there are too few comments to provide space for the ad, and I fixed it now with an if statement anyway. But thanks!
Comment ID #58897
So are the newer ads also done by time displayed, or are they CPM or CPC?
Comment ID #58947
CPM. So it vaguely hurts if you block them, but not enough for us to care. (For those of you who don’t understand CPM\CPC, CPM means we get paid per view, CPC means we get paid per click. So there’s an incentive for you to click if we ever put up CPC ads, but that’s not planned.)
Comment ID #59016
Fair enough. I’m happy enough to unblock ‘em anyway. Still, there’s no way I’m clicking the Technorati ones - most of the ones I’m seeing seem extremely dodgy. ![]()

I can tell you how: Steroids
Comment ID #59297
The ads slow the loading a bit, but it’s still bearable.
Comment ID #59353
@ Yappy: Its really hard for me to believe that people click on half the ads I see on the net, but then I realize how big Facebook is.

Play free online games.
Nah, I’m just looking for the free online porn.

I am still having trouble transferring to Burst Media, but check it out! I think I’ve finally settled on the mix of ads we’re going to have. I removed the two banners at the bottom of the page, and figured out a way of fitting one next to the comic view page you see as you browse the archive. I know it’s a little distracting there, but the archive accounts for 70% of our hits so it’ll really help to have an extra tower ad there, especially as it meets Burst’s specifications.
So, uh, let me know if ads are giving you any problems, or if you have any thoughts or opinions.
Comment ID #61276
MiwAuturu would know. He’s fucking huge! D:
Comment ID #61822
Nevermind! o.o Please return to what you were doing!

So Burst got themselves sorted out, and I added them to the top leaderboard and beside-comic-viewer spots. Burst is right now serving a lot of PSAs and survey ads, but soon they’ll start filling them with better ones (it takes a few days.)
The next week should be very interesting! And hopefully lucrative.
Comment ID #62526
I just had my first pop-up from BCB. Well, strictly it was a “fixed” element scrolling with (and partly obscuring) the screen, but close enough.
Something called Crowd Science insisting that the owners of this website were conducting site research on their readers. It wasn’t SuitCase branded so I ignored it, but it was still pretty convincing. Is this actually yours, Souppy? Or is one of your advertisers getting a bit eager?
Comment ID #62529
Oh, how interesting. Keep screenshots of that stuff, and check the domain of who it links to (it’ll be burst, technoratimedia or projectwonderful). I assume it was Burst, finally serving some ads. I can do things to ensure there are no popups and things, but I haven’t enabled all of that because I wasn’t sure what actually counted as “intrusive” advertising.
Did you click on it to make that all happen? Or just mouse over?
Comment ID #62530
Nope. Just popped up while I was browsing the forum. I was reading it over when it faded away again.
I’ll let you know my findings if I come across it again.
Comment ID #62860
I think I got this elusive ad on film. Now our viewers at home can see it in its natural habitat.
Screenshot
I don’t know why it appears, must be random or something. Disappeared pretty quickly though, maybe in half a minute.
Comment ID #62880
Yep, that’s the bunny. Awful sneaky for an ad; you could imagine a legitimate surveymonkey popup appearing in much the same way.
Comment ID #62919
It’s not all that nefarious, to be honest. I get the feeling filling out some of those surveys will result in better ads being served here. It’s up to you if you want to serve them.
I will look into this more when I see one of the popups myself. For the time being I hope they’re ignorable. I can turn them off with some scripting tweaks, I think!
Comment ID #62923
They’re very rare and not really intrusive, just sitting there in the corner for a while. I vote for leaving them be. Maybe next time one appears I’ll click it to see what the quiz is about.
Comment ID #62982
Agreed. I’ll give it a chance once.
Comment ID #65352
I send you an issue ticket. Bug 021. When you are on any page of the comic (except for the actual page), the left navigation arrow seems to be missing.
PROOF
P.D. For my misfortune, this page that i opened was a bit…NSFW…and i was at work…i saw it since it was the first page that 5ony saw…and while i was editing the pic to show the issue, some guys saw me…so…yeah…may be in trouble…
Laters…
Comment ID #65358
Yes, I removed the previous page arrow. Did you expect it to be weirdly overlaid on the page border? Do you not see how I had limited horizontal space?
Comment ID #65365
Yes i did see the limited space, but i thought that you may apply some mouse over code over the comic and make there the back command (using some javascript).
Comment ID #65404
back at fizmats elusive ad, I clicked it, and it just asked my age, i gave it, then suddenly the test was over >.>
Comment ID #65607
I think it’d be uncouth to make something outside of tr page boundaries clickable. It would betray expectations.
Comment ID #65608
Um. Double problems with the archive ads, actually. If you look at the left side of the comic in FW’s post, the main image sprawls over into the tinted border.
If you’re going to allow the comic to stretch out that far, why not mirror its sprawl with the advert, giving yourself a little room for an ultra-slimline back button? Or I guess you could widen the centrecol div, although I don’t know what cans of worms that would open.
Comment ID #65627
You try it. I couldn’t get it to work in any reasonable way. I agree that the off-centre positioning is not ideal, but there’s a 10px spillover amount I needed to find a place for (as the site’s width is 950, comics are 800 and ads are 160) and I figured the current layout to be the nicest way of arranging things. I cannot expand the layout (980 is already pushing it in my opinion) without modifying the gardient borders, which I thought would look inconsistent and upsetting. The primary concerns I had were that the edges of the gradient borders (currently 15px) would look bad if I overlapped them to certain degrees, and that if a previous button was not obvious enough, it shouldn’t be there as it might confuse people.
I did consider a smaller Previous arrow above the current big Next one, but couldn’t get them in proportion and figured the utility of it wasn’t enough to justify making the scroll distance to get to a clickable “next” button even longer.
I welcome any sensible alternatives, but mock it up first as I think you’ll find it’s hard to create 10px of horizontal space in a way that doesn’t look off-putting.
Head back to the forum index.
