Teh Sora, the anime stopped using ‘Believe it’ since, like…. 2007. I dunno, something ridiculous. The only place you even MIGHT hear it anymore is the video games. That’s it.

Just saying.

I am tired of all the economic negative news. I think the reason the
economy sounds bad has less to do with an actual recession than
media sensationalism and doomsday pessimism. Last year everyone was in a panic because the price of oil was rising, but the sky did not fall. I don’t think the media should
lie about an increasing unemployment rate, but I would like to
hear more positive news stories.

http://www.usnews.com/money/blogs/alpha-consumer/ 2009/1/8/did-the-media-cause-the-recession.html

I did some research and found that there is plenty of good news out there:

The stock market has risen 53% this year and is still cheap:

http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/oct/ 15/cautious-optimism/?uniontrib

Wells Fargo, Apple, Ford, SkyWest, and Adidas have declared profits:

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news? pid=20601100&sid=aZ6fjHAA_gsg

US housing starts have increased:

http://blog.al.com/breaking/2009/10/ us_housing_starts_rise.html

Business confidence has risen:

http://www.bostonherald.com/business/general/ view.bg?articleid=1203965&srvc=rss

North Dakota has an unemployment rate of 4.2%. If you don’t have a job, move. If you can’t sell your house at the price you want, you shouldn’t have paid so much for it. If you don’t want to move and make trade-offs, I guess that you aren’t that desperate for work.

http://www.argusleader.com/article/20091107/ BUSINESS/911070331/1001/news

If you really want to stay where you are and haven’t
found a job, think of a way to make money from your hobbies. Do you like to cook? Are you good are fixing things? Do you like to paint? I
strongly believe that if you do what you love, the money will follow. Just
because someone says there is a recession, doesn’t make it true.
Just because most people used to believe the world was flat, did
that make it true? If you are feeling negative, I
highly recommend the book “You Can Have it All”:

http://www.librarything.com/work/508754

You might also feel less sorry for yourself or
the economy if put your life in perspective. Would you
rather live in Zimbawe where the GDP per capita income is $200 per YEAR?

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the- world-factbook/rankorder/2004rank.html

Even if things are really bad for you and you become homeless, there is a safety net of food banks, shelters, general relief, and food stamps.

America needs a good pep talk instead of negativity. I really think Obama would be more helpful to the economy by talking about the positive sides instead of pushing expensive stimulus programs. People should live within their means to avoid crashing the economy, but even when overextended, the United States has managed to pay the massive debts of the Depression and WWII.

http://zfacts.com/p/318.html

While I am not blind to the difficulties that may exist in the present economy, I just think people should be more optimistic and look at the good sides. I remember when I was in middle school in the mid 1980’s and I had a teacher who asked my classmates whether the USA was on the way to the peak of power, at the peak, or on the way down. I was only student who said the US hasn’t reached the peak yet. A few years later the Japanese eceonomy crashed, the Soviet Union collapsed, and America was the only superpower.

I am not even sure if there is a recession, but if there is one, I think it will be short. Remember that anyone who bets against the US economy will always lose.

Well. You know… “new.” I’ve heard good things.

You know what I miss? How they used to have Animidnight on that one channel, can’t remember the name, and they’d show an hour and a half of anime every Saturday night. And it’d always be something completely awesome. It’s where I first saw Akira and Ghost in the Shell and Hellsing.

- Helsing (the OVA is especially good)
- Afro Samurai
- Soul Eater

In fact sometimes I see an uncanny resemblance with BCB and this last anime, Soul Eater! XD

…Well except for the whole mythical halloweenish cast but you guys get the point. ^.^;

Here, watch a sample, then tell me who from BCB can you recognize by the modus operandi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwN_khoEttI

Victoria Hellsing is the greatest female character created in any medium of story-telling.

I’d like to throw in Bubblegum Crisis for your consideration.

Got finished with watching Samurai Champloo. Didn’t like how crude it could be, but everything else was pretty great. The animation was wonderfully fluid, especially during the fight scenes (where it REALLY counted). The characters didn’t mature a whole lot, but you did see how the group’s dynamics had changed by the final episode. The character designs were a bit leading, though…you could usually tell who the villain was right off the bat. Even though I’m no hip-hop fan, I did usually enjoy the music quite a bit.

But something that really impressed me about the series, something that seemed almost too mature for a show like this, was how they handled the whole religion-in-Japan thing. When I saw the episode dealing with the crazed priest, I rolled my eyes and thought, “Oh, great. Here comes the whole ‘Christians are crazy, stupid sheep people who can’t be reasoned with’ spiel. Never heard that before.” I figured that it would be like the Father Cornello thing in Fullmetal Alchemist and that everyone would eventually see though the bad guy and quickly toss aside their obviously childish beliefs like truly intelligent people and bla bla bla bla. But I was genuinely shocked at how well the writers handled it. Rather than focusing on whether the Christian belief system was right or wrong, beneficial or detrimental, the episode dealt with how people can purposely abuse religion for personal gain, something that happens in real life and which pretty much everyone on the planet agrees is wrong anyway. It also brought up Japan’s past anti-Christianity policies, which even turn out to be something of a plot point later on. In short it doesn’t cram anything down the viewer’s throat. It didn’t evangelize, it didn’t disparage, it was just plain respectful. For an anime, that’s hot.

In short, the whole thing is pretty friggin’ great, and I recommend checking it out.

Also currently watching Irresponsible Captain Tylor. It’s pretty good for a laugh, and you have to wonder if Tylor is genuinely stupid or Lelouch-trouncingly brilliant. The animation is old, but not too old. Kind of has a vintage charm to it. Also a good one to check out if you’re looking for something unpretentious.

But something I had to actually suffer through was Last Exile. Oh, yes, the animation was good. Not fantastic like some have claimed, but good. Until Studio Gonzo ruined it with all the conspicuous CGI. The story was boring, slow, and didn’t even begin to catch my interest until about three disks in (it was a four-disk set, so draw your own conclusions). The music was sub-par and suffered from soundtrack dissonance; seriously, after a guy got shot through the head, you see his brains splattered across the cockpit, and they have this light, almost whimsical music to go along with it (and I’m pretty sure they weren’t trying to be artistic about it). Half of the battles don’t seem serious at all because of this nonsense. Most of the characters were pretty bland, if not in personality then in design. Everyone just looked and so dull, though none could top the cliche storm that is Alex Roe.

He’s like everything I’ve ever disliked in anime rolled up into one tired package. You know this guy. He’s the overly stoic badass character than no one can legitimately question without looking like a complete moron for ever doubting his magnificence. And you won’t disagree with him for long because he clearly possesses the wisdom of Solomon, even if what he does seems devoid of common sense and/or is unworkable in the real world. He has two, maybe three facial expressions total, and, ignoring a few bizarre outbursts, zero personality. He’s essentially a good-looking superpowered zombie with a cape.

Oh, and he’s singlehandedly responsible for the series’ pathetic anti-climax (you wanted that villain to suffer, dammit, and this is what you get?!). And when I say “singlehandedly,” I mean it in the most literal sense possible. You cannot enjoy this man.

The shows only saving grace, if that’s what it can be called, is the unambiguously gay Lord Dio. Against such a dull backdrop of a series, it’s not surprising that Dio’s the most memorable character. Let’s face it: his backstory is probably the only one you’re going to care about, and he’s probably the only one of the bunch you will ever get attached to. And, to it’s credit, Last Exile milks that. Sadistically.

Ok, rant over.

Anyone been to anime-planet.com? (please make sure you put the dash in there…). It’s a pretty neat site that helps you find suggestions for anime you might like to watch. It also has a bar that counts how many episodes you’ve watched and therefore how much of your life you’ve spent watching anime. I’ve topped off at an unhealthy 2 months and 1 week. I have watched a LOT of anime.
My profile on A-P: http://www.anime-planet.com/users/Tomikohara

Among my favorites are Death Note, Mushishi, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge, Nana and Twelve Kingdoms. Saumrai Champloo is pretty awesome too. What started me on anime was DBZ, oh how I loved it, but when I look back on it now, the art wasn’t that great and HOLY MOTHER OF FILLER was there a lot of stareing going on…

Are you guys dubbers or subbers? Personally I can’t STAND dubbed anime. Most are like getting tortured with a cheese grater. I think I’ve only come across 2 dubbed anime that were decent.

Eh, I didn’t find Cat Soup that entertaining. Boggiepop Phantom and Paranoia Agent on the other hand, woohoo!

Gantz is a bunch of porn and nothing gets explained in the end, but the idea is neat and the opening song is KICK@$$!! This is actually one of the few shows where I started watching it in dub and it was sooo bad that I had to actually leave the room because I was furious, haha.

Some of Naruto can be enjoyable but lets face it: They’re not real ninja. The things they do and the things they don’t do can be frustrating for those who want a real story with “real” ninja. If you’re looking for something “older”, check out Basilisk, that’s pretty cool, and the art is lovely.

I barely watch any anime these days due to the constant traveling around *sob*. What I really need is a weekend-long animethon with a whole bunch of other nerdy anime fanatics =D
