You knew full well that something like this was bound to happen.

This thread is for anything anime related: Favorite shows *coughPokemoncough*, music, your own animations or art, favorite mangas, etc.

Now to start off this thread, I give you probably one of the best animes ever created.

HAJIME NO IPPO!

http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=KTrkvIjYTrc&feature=PlayList&p=9C298B26D9E71465& playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=4

The story is about a boy named Ippo Makunochi, a very shy high school student who never had the time to make friends because he was always busy helping his mother run their family-own fishing business. Because he kept to himself, a group of bullies, led by a student named Umezawa, got into the habit of picking on him. On one particular day these bullies decided to give him a rather serious beating, but a middle-weight professional boxer who was passing by stopped the bullies and took the injured Ippo to the Kamogawa Gym, owned by retired boxer Genji Kamogawa, to treat his wounds. After Ippo awoke to the sounds of boxers training, the boxer who saved him, Mamoru Takamura, tried to cheer Ippo up by letting him vent his frustrations on a sandbag. It was then that they had their first glimpse into Ippo’s talent for boxing. After that incident, Ippo started his regular training and began his path in Japan’s professional boxing, beginning with two spars against the talented Ichiro Miyata who is the same age as Ippo.

Love this anime SO much!

While I’ve seen a lot of anime, I do get a bit bored with the frequency of extreme violence or unnecessary panty shots throughout the ones my friends like. There’s only one anime that I’ve actually enjoyed to the point of wanting to recommend it: Spice and Wolf.

It was always a bit odd, being a combination of a magical fantasy adventure and an economics lesson. Seriously. The basic plot is that Kraft Lawrence, a reasonably experienced trader looking to make his own way in the world, one day finds a naked wolf-girl in the back of his cart. As one does. (She’s got BCB anatomy, before you get too excited, whf)

In any case, he discovers his hitch-hiker is Holo the Wise Wolf, local goddess of the harvest, who is fed up with being ignored by farmers. In exchange for his help in getting her back to her northern homeland, she offers her advice and wisdom. Cue something part-way between medieval road movie, rom-com and, as I said, economics lesson. Lawrence REALLY likes explaining his deals.

Eh. It sounds nutty, but it’s played fairly straight, and it’s definitely worth seeing. Check the 1min30 intro at least. If you think it’s beautiful, so much the better.

Fooly Cooly. Because watching Atomsk fight Haruka with Jimmy Page’s guitar on top of a building shaped like an iron is just…I have no word for it. Kills me that it only lasted six episodes.

Hmm… Rurouni Kenshin.

Eh, it’s pretty gory and bloody at times. I usually close my eyes or look away, or both, when there are terrible things going on. But it’s also a very good, though dark, story. And Himura Kenshin is, possibly, my favourite film character of all time.

I only wish it ended differently. Oh, and that there was less maltractation. ^_^

Apart from that, I’m a fan of Studio Ghibli’s work. Nausicaä (where are those symbols supposed to be) might be my favourite.

@ ILB: My friend’s little brother told me he and that girl bang at the end. Is that true? I kind of want it to be true. :(

J. Vincero (Jerk) June 18, 2010, 10:13 AM EST.

Comment ID #46235

…I am really not sure. I’ve only heard about the end from others; the anime didn’t end but apparently the manga did.

Oi! Yappy! I agree full well with you, Spice and Wolf is a beautiful series, the economics only adds, “spice” (ohohohoho) to the already excellent plot. Season 2 is very moving… still makes me choke up sometimes…

Altough, when it comes down to epic anime, you can’t beat Code Geass, watch it subbed or you will be hearing Ichigo whenever Lelouch talks. (johnny yong bosch, neat guy in person)

Ace June 18, 2010, 1:21 PM EST.

Haven’t managed to get my hands on Season 2, though. Definitely trying to hunt a copy down ASAP, though.

As i’ve said in previous threads, Fruits Basket had an immense personal effect on me. It’s not necessarily my favorite, but I can’t help but hold it up pretty high. I mean, i got me my girlfriend out of watching it. Or rather that’s what i like to think.

I don’t watch very many anime that are outside the realm of mainstream, due to not having the time to really look and having other interests, but my favorites tend to be Rurouni Kenshin and G-Gundam. The latter is pure corny narm, but its still so awesome. WHY IS IT SO CORNY YET STILL SO DAMNED AWESOOOOMMMMMME.

i watch a lot of anime.
it’s not something i’m proud of,but between the army and my part time job
i really don’t have the energy to get out of the house.

and the more i watch the more i’m amazed at the fucked up curve of quality in anime.
it like… in American t.v some shows are good, some are bad, most are average.
very few are amazing or horrible.

in anime most of the shows are terrible and a few are incredible.
no middle ground at all.

anyway my fave anime off all time are:
cowboy bebop
azumaga daiho
serial experiment lain
ghost in the shell (but not the movies.)

all classics.

-Castle In The Sky is a good anime movie, mostly because of the characters.
-Full Metal Alchemist Brootherhood, which is arguably better than the original FMA
-Several Gundam series, such as 08th MS Team, Stardust Memory, War In The Pocket, and Gundam Unicorn (the last two are actually OVAs).

…That Unicorn one could probably use a little explanation. I guess the Japanese think of unicorns less in the girly-rainbow sort of way than than that the majestic-creature-that-rams-you-through-the-gut- with-its-horn-when-its-pissed ideal. Even so, the title alone is usually enough to discourage most people, which is too bad because just based on the only episode out so far, it looks like it the whole thing will be great.

Getting past the title, I think the problem most people will have with Unicorn is that it’s set late in the already well developed Universal Century timeline (i.e., it’s related to the big bulk of older stuff that came before Gundam Seed, Gundam Wing, etc.). The first episode makes an effort to explain the basics of what’s happened up to that point, but it can be confusing. Ultimately, it’s the Universal Century fans who will get the most out of Unicorn.

If you’re interested, here’s some basic stuff to know:
1. Earth Sphere (the planet, the moon, plus a bunch of giant orbiting space colonies) is ruled by a single government called the Federation
2. In the Universal Century’s 79th year, a bunch of colonies rebelled under the name “Zeon” for about a year. Over half the human population was wiped out before the Federation eventually won.
3. Some militaristic Zeon partisan groups still existed after the war had ended. Eventually they became known as Neo Zeon.
4. Both sides have their problems: the Federation tends to be corrupt and oppressive at times, while Neo Zeon is rather fanatical (I’m pretty sure Zeon was based on Nazi Germany). Both sides have ended up causing a bunch of problems throughout the earth sphere, though there are plenty of good people within both factions.
