@Delilah

Oh don’t worry, I know that to be true. I mean look at me, I’m Agentwebdog. I am very imersed in the furry culture. What I meant was that to everyone furry means something a little different, to some people it means people who draw only porn of animals. To others it’s a community that enjoys anthro animals. There is such diversity to the word furry that it reflects the diversity of the culture itself. A lot of people however, (Even the furs themselves) immediately assume that when asked if they’re a furry they think the person means the ‘fetish’ furry and identify with the ‘er maybe’ group, because “animal fetish” is the most widely accepted furry definition among non-furs.

And when I said I was relatively horrified, I should have clarified that it was the shock the… well… first impressions of the furry society displays - that was my mistake. =)

I’m now very scared that there will actually be a Twilight arc - I love vampires but Twilight has ruined them for at least the next 20 years….. I love this comic so much but if you turn to vampires I will have to stop reading on principal which will be a MASSIVE SHAME for me… You were joking right?…

Goggles June 28, 2010, 12:31 PM EST.

A piece of advice for Goggles, in the short time I’ve been here I’ve learned not to trust anything Suitcase says about future plot points. For example he said Paulo would be sleeping with Lucy by the 18th page in the current chapter.

Also two points about vampires. 1: apparently even Stephanie Meyer is sick and tired of this whole vampire thing. 2: Go find yourself a copy of “The Strain” by Guillermo Del Toro, the author wrote it with the intent of bringing back the imag of the vampire from his childooh. The dark, merciless creature that stalks the night.

“For those of you who wrote disparaging things about Stephenie Meyer, please refrain from criticising the finest novelist of the new millennium in future surveys. We love Twilight and will use the volume of responses to this question to justify a gradual transition to a vampire-based story arc that will round out the last two years of the BCB plotline.”

Didn’t you have something showing nationality in the survey?

I’m sure that would have shown interesting results too :3. I know that much of my unwillingness to purchase merchandise is because the postage to my country is quite steep. Of course, I probably wouldn’t buy merchandise anyway. If I had 14$ and I knew 10$ of those would go to another company rather than the artist, I always prefer just donating it instead. I’m not out to support cafepress or another company, but to support the comic :).

I think the nationality results mirrored what I get through Google Analytics. Generally, the US is 70% of visitors, with Canada and Australia making up another 10%. There are a whole bunch of other countries with smaller readerships.

@ SuitCase

It seems that 62% of our fanbase are at least a little furry, which is maybe something to overcome? BCB isn’t positioned as a furry comic, and it seems to belittle the strengths of the comic for it to be read simply because it is furry.

I think you are looking at this all wrong. There is nothing to “overcome”. Just because a large portion of your readership identifies as furry or potentially furry does not make your web comic any more or less so. The comic doesn’t change its nature based upon readership, but upon its content.

Naturally those who identify as furry will be drawn to this, since regardless of intention, the characters are text book furry (non humans with human like qualities).

Personally, I see no cause for alarm, or disdain, or any other negative response.

Just my two cents.

I don’t see why you should care if your reader base is or isn’t furry, wouldn’t that 62% of your reader base (which is quite considerable), still be proportionately (compared to the ‘non-furry’ base) clicking ads and buying merchandise?

Whatever gets folks in the door.

Zav August 14, 2010, 1:41 AM EST.

Comment ID #74702

It depends on what image Taeshi and Siutcase want to sell the comic and relative merchendise.

Comment ID #74705

Because furry fandom sucks.

J. Vincero (Jerk) August 14, 2010, 1:44 AM EST.

Comment ID #74723

While ‘furry’ might be what got people in the door, so to speak, what’s keeping them here (and spending money) is the comic itself, and/or the community/merchandise. There are plenty of comics out there, furry or otherwise, so it doesn’t really belittle the comic for people to come in based on the art style.

Frankly, it also doesn’t make sense to alienate 62% of your potential customers by acting like their money is diseased, either.

You could change your demographics, but you’d have to basically redesign the entire comic/community/webpage/advertisements, and you’d obviously lose a lot of your long standing repeat customer base as well as need to basically dictate the events in the comic based on marketing trends, lessening the overall value of the product for that new demographic that you might attract.

It really seems that instead of trying to shoo people who are spending money on you, work to attract or make more people simultaniously feel welcome and wanting to spend money. I’d think you’d want to be as inclusionist as possible.

My two cents, at least.

@Zav

That’s pretty much what I was getting at. For those who were first drawn here simply by virtue of the physical appearance of the characters, odds are good that, if Taeshi were to simply start drawing this comic with humans instead, most of them would continue to read.

This comic stands out as a drama/comedy comic, not a furry comic.

That being said. That really was harsh and uncalled for Suitcase. Fortunately it is Taeshi who creates this comic, not you, so my readership continues unhindered.

And again?

Intolerant aren’t we? And judgmental it seems.

All I originally stated was that you shouldn’t concern yourself with the identity of your readers, and if anything, paid this web comic a compliment.

Come to think of it, how exactly have you concluded that I am personally a furry. Have I said anything to that effect? For that matter, does it really matter if someone is or is not a furry?

I suspect I’ll just get another “whatever furry” or some such response. I think I’ll stick around though, perhaps you’ll surprise me yet.
