Singing Practice: Taking Requests!

Pages: 1 / 2 (Newest) | Next page

That’s right, I want YOU to help me practice my singing voice. With a bit of free time over the summer, I’ve decided to practice my singing more, what with college musicals something I may be interested in. But singing the same old songs I’m used to get kinda boring, and what better way to spice it up than to put up a request topic? The gist of it is - name a song that you would like to hear me sing, as well as any details about how said karaoke could be handled (i.e., the inclusion of harmony, music, etc). I will then fulfill that request to the best of my ability and post the result here, for anyone interested enough to listen to. You can then comment, suggest points for improvement, request new songs, and so forth. However, I will need to put a few guidelines about what I will accept as requests.

I will NOT agree to sing songs which:

- Contain profanity, extremely suggestive themes, or anything obviously NSFW (i.e. Birthday Sex, most hardcore hip-hop).

- Contain a large amount of throat-hindering screaming (i.e. Most Slipknot songs and other Death Metal).

Song requests come on a first-come, first-serve basis. When placing a request, you can expect results in 2-5 days, depending on varying factors. However, there are some song choices which will hinder my speed. Such songs include those that:

- Are sung in a foreign language.

- Are significantly difficult to sing (I’ll want to make sure the quality is good).

- Are significantly long (Over 6 minutes).

- The source of which are difficult to obtain (It is suggested that you provide the song in question as a link or music file to me when making a request).

Song requests come in three flavors - Full music, karaoke, and acapella. full music is obvious (Sung along with the entire song). Karaoke is sung with an instrumental version of the song, without the artist’s actual lyrics in the background (It is STRONGLY recommended that you provide an instrumental to your song choice if you wish for a karaoke-style song). Lastly, is acapella, which is without any source of music in the background - all you hear is my voice. with each flavor, you can also request that I sing both melody and harmony for the song. Note that this will naturally make your song take longer to sing. Requests can be reserved now, but “production” will not begin until Monday. Thank you in advance for adding flavor to my practice.

(P.S., I do not have any direct method for uploading music files. Until I can be helped to find a way, current music request will be returned via e-mail/Skype message).

Looking for a challenge for your vocal chords? Ok… I challenge you to sing…

Love Is War (Fye Cover).

This is the cover by Fye, which is a far better version to gauge how to sing it well. It’s not particularly hard to find the instrumental version of it, so I’m going to say do it Karaoke style. Just in case though, here’s a link to the Instrumental one on YouTube, complete with links on how to get the MP3 etc (and an image that shows what to click since the site is in Japanese)

Love Is War (Instrumental).

An acapella version of Super Mario Bros. 2’s Overworld theme.

On a slightly more serious note, if that doesn’t float your boat there’s always The Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd.

The Brow June 27, 2010, 5:59 PM EST.

@ whf:

Since you gave no specifications, I assume you’d like for me to do the song on full music without harmony. Luckily, the song’s pretty simple to sing - only memory of the lyrics and timing will be a problem. Expect this done sometime by tomorrow.

@Mav:

You’ve chosen a song in Japanese AND a pretty high-pitched one to boot… Awesome! However, this means it’ll take a while for me to properly get this going. Expect yours done… Wednesday-Thursday-ish.

@The Brow:

As far as The Great Gig in the Sky goes, I’m sadly gonna have to reject that for two reasons. Firstly, the lyrics in there are very hard to make-out/mostly ad-libbing. Secondly, while it’s definitely not Death Metal, the consistent high-pitched screams are still pretty throat hindering. However, your SMB2 song gave me the perfect idea to practice proper harmony-mixing. Expect a detailed (albeit short) acapella theme song the day after Mav’s request is finished.

EDIT: After reading through my first post, I’ll make a quick change to my guideline - songs with “some” profanity are allowed (i.e. Last Resort, The Rock Show), as long as I do not have to curse every three measures.

@Triplesexy:

The first two, I believe I can do (Why do people always want the japanese songs?). However, realise that stacking songs is kinda unfair to others who want requests. I will do the Gorillaz one after The Brow’s, but the latter one might have to wait if new requests are issued before then - I hope you understand.

And yes, the third is definitely out of the question - in fact, that was one of the songs I was thinking about when making the NSFW guideline.

@Taeshi:

Another video game semi-scat theme, and it’s Sonic too?! Love that game series (The old ones at least). I’m gonna go ahead and assume you mean Act 1, and I’m also assuming you’re not joking. Also, yeah, this one’s much more complex than SMB2, so it’ll take a bit. Expect it, at latest, Monday next week.

Sounds good (Yes, Like a Virgin’s not that suggestive, and there’s no profanity, so I’ll do that). However, that’s a lot of songs at once, so I don’t know when any of those will be done. ^_^’ Expect them sometime next week, after Taeshi’s request, in the order they were posted.

Also, Maverick, sorry for this inconvenience, but it’d take me forever to learn to sing the song on an instrumental, and therefore, I’ll have to use the actual music video and sing-along.

Listening to my request of “Love Is War”, I have a couple of critiques. It’s good, but I’m guessing that just hearing people say “Loved it” somewhat defeats the purpose of the exercise.

While impressive that you were able to hold the note for that long in regards to the scream near the start, it fell a tad flat and felt like it needed to go an octave higher than the rest of the song. It’s a damn hard thing to pull off though, so that’s completely understandable.

My only other real gripe (aside from the one or two timing/lyrical flubs which are excusable due to the obvious language barrier) was that your rendition seemed to lack the raw power and emotion that the song needs to drive itself. It’s a song about a protagonist who is in love with someone, but they are already in a relationship, and although it’s wrong, the protagonist declares war against their love’s partner, determined to win them over in spite of the obstacle of their current relationship.

It’s why I’m in love with Fye’s rendition. You can feel the anger, despair and determination in every syllable of the song. Where as in yours, while technically sound, staying in key and hitting the notes, lacks that emotion and feels a little flat. Again, this can be attributed to the language barrier, but it’s still a point worth mentioning.

The ability to feel and convey the strength of the emotions of a song’s protagonist is what separates good singers from great singers IMHO.

You should do “Speed of Sound” by Coldplay as performed by the Vitamin String Quartet.
Other good ones they’ve done are:
Fix You
In My Place
Shiver (This one would be harder)
Politik
Yellow
Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol
Fireflies by Owl City
Sweet Child O’ Mine and Guns and Roses
Through the Fire and the Flames by Dragonforce (Sounds insane on the violin)
Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve

And pretty much every other pop song in existence. They are all instrumentals.

Just got done listening to the song i requested and i have good news and bad news

The good news is you do have potentional, there is talent there but unfortunatly not mch soul im afraid, at times it sounded simply like you were reading along to the music instead of singing (still better than any attempt by me) You have skill but you’ve yet to figure out how to put your very life experience’s into it, remember the good and the bad and let it flow man, in music you have to accept evrything in order to focus on the emotion your going, for, there can be no good without bad, Just keep trying and you will figure out how to put your soul into the music one day

In response to Triplesexy’s criticism - If you’re referring to the chorus, then I’ll review how my emotion sounded then. However, during the verses, it’s obvious that the singer is trying to sound apathetic, so I simply followed his image.

This response was totally not an excuse to bump my thread.

… Ahahaha~

Oh! In full music as well. You dun have to do the short rap part that’s in it either unless you want to try. Thought this would be a good song to practice more of your foreign pronunciation on. It’s also a bit more bouncy in rhythm and has some run on lines. Use your breath wisely!

And this is totally in no way a ploy to make you awkwardly sing in Japanese. Nope.
