Stupid People Ruin Everything

The local library in my area has recently hit some controversy over book content. Some woman found all the volumes of The Sandman in the arts and design section of the library where the rest of the non-manga comic books are found. She then found all these other books that could be considered “pornographic” in nature. Most of these books were comic books. Several others were actually literary classics and modern hits.

I take it that she didn’t even read most of the books that she put up on her list as “inappropriate”, because other books on the list included “Anansi Boys”, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, “All that Glitters is Not Gucci”, “Pretty in Pink”, “Dorothy of Oz”, “Persepolis”, and “Wicked”.

Anyways, she approached the city council twice. Those two times, she was ignored. The third time, the city council took action. Now, the library is under a lot of stress to “fix” this. Now, the library is going through all of their material, clearing out and reevaluating several of their books so they can make a “mature” section, thus making it so the library has to make more room for more shelves that won’t even be completely full. Also, the library is experiencing an extreme budget cut. Keep in mind that this is not a huge library and that this library doesn’t get enough money as it is.

As an unintended consequence of this, the art classes at the local high school are going to be under extreme scrutiny since nudity has been featured in a piece previously before. Also, the same woman is starting to ask that the anime club that meets at the library be disbanded.

Discuss how stupid, closed-mindedness ruins everything.

Moral Guardians for the win. Hippies to the left of me, Christians to the right. Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

Now let’s cut off someone’s ear.

I hate the “douche bag brigade” at my school, dubbed by me, my two friends and my theater arts teacher, these are the people who complain about everything. They are hicks, jocks, and the preps that can’t stand a minute of company with anybody but their friends. One instance, in art class, we were given an assignment to draw a building (I forgot the details of it, but i got an A) and we were allowed to talk with people at our group, so we do. Then about halfway through the class period one girl (a prep mind you) sitting in a table parallel to ours starts bawling, and crying. No reason. And she said to the counseler that our table called her a bitch. We did not. “*sniff* th-they said, they said m-my *sniff* n-name, th-then *sniff* they s-said, th-the b-B word *sniff*” I shit you not, thats what she said, we did not say that, however, by order of the principal, we are not allowed to talk in art. EVER. WTF. The hicks are the worst, they act like they know what “real work” is, yet all they do is sit on their ass and complain about how they do real work, and how us “people who think they’re smarter then us, which the ain’t” spend all our time “reading” and “studying” and not working. dude. this is school. what the fuck do expect me to do? Run around doing push ups during algebra? anyway, because of their “demonstration” of their strength, we can’t get up freely during lunch.

I cannot believe i just typed all that…..>.>

What is really bad, is that there is not just one extreme. She (refering to the opening post) is going extreme censorship. There is a battle in Montana about Sex-Ed to start teaching in kindergarten. And teaching sex positions at the age of 10. Seems like another extreme there.

The way I learned seems good. I learned about 1 sex organ at 9, the other at 10. And then the school said “Ask your parents for anything else”. I did and it was quick, sort of funny too.
(Me and my father)
“We went through sex-ed today and I have a question.”
“Ok”
“So, how does the sperm reach the egg?”
“Stick the peg, in the slot.”
“Oooh, ok.”
That was it.

…I might be more inclined to, at first, blame this on a lack of information on the librarian’s part rather than a shortage of basic intelligence.

If the situation was explained and she still went ahead with it without a worthwhile explanation…I’d probably still attribute that to stubbornness instead of idiocy.

The only reason that I wouldn’t go with the stupidity explanation, at least for a while, is that I kind of suspect that everyone on the planet—myself VERY MUCH included—is actually quite stupid in at least one way, even if it isn’t clear to themselves or to a number of people around them. But then there will always be someone who WILL see it.

If you’re retarded enough to be a moral guardian, you can be held accountable for your actions as one.

Me, I am a librarian. In Texas, of all places, where there is no shortage of moralfags. I once made a man, a moralfag, twice my age look like an idiot in the middle of class by pointing out that it wasn’t his job to be the moral guardian of the information process.

Write a letter to a local newspaper comparing this censorship to the nazis or some other regime that people are very afraid of, and tell everyone you think is a reasonable person to do so, it will have no consequences whatsoever.

And really, “To Kill a Mockingbird?” Really? Isn’t that, like, MANDATORY READING in high schools nowadays? You know, the books they make EVERYBODY read?

The Adventures of Huckleberry, at least, triggers the left side of the moral guardian over values dissonance, namely that word to which Jim is referred (albeit without malice).

I hold censorship in all its forms in contempt.

The worst ones are the Christian fundamentalist insane people:
“OH YOU SAID THE F-WORD! YOU WILL BURN IN HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!”

(Yes. Really. God really cares that much about one word. All of the first three gospels in the New Testament don’t matter, do they?)

But moving on, then they get on your case for stuff like wearing T-shirts and reading books in public and shit like that. Honestly?
