Some care to explain how the free form works?

The Bell Boy August 17, 2010, 1:47 AM EST.

Comment ID #77327

The free form is as basic as it gets.

You join #BcBgames

You role play your character entering the ‘gathering hall’ of the guild and hang out with whomever else is role playing there at the time. There’s no rolling, no quest, nothing like that. It’s just the characters talking.

I will say it isn’t active 24/7. So dont expect a response ALWAYS. A good test is if… people are talking in character #BcBgames. People are freeforming! Just to be sure it’s good to ask “Who’s active in the free-form right now and where are they?” typically someone will be polite enough to tell you.

When is the next game, then?

Brock August 19, 2010, 5:11 AM EST.

Comment ID #78436

hard to say Brock. My personal rule is to run at least -one- game a week. this means you should see another game from me on Sunday at the very latest, but it should come earlier then that. it really depends on how busy things get here, and when the other GM’s decide to run their own sessions.

Posting my backup character in case Amunet ever dies, or she is busy in quest limbo and I feel like joining the soft RP

=Player: MiwAuturu=
Character: Mannik Thanatos

Mannik is a natural prodigy with the understanding of the magical arts; he is also true believer that “No magic is inherently evil, evil people use dark magic so it gets a bad name.” This… and the fact that he practiced what he preached, got him into a considerable amount of trouble, and he ended up losing his right to attend the mages’ academy in the capital. He left for Fair River, hoping to join the guild there, figuring they would have less moral issues with his magic so long as he was strong and wasn’t going to turn on his teammates. Despite using magic long believed to consume a man’s mind with greed he seems completely unaffected by it.

ATT:10 DEF:4 VIT:4

=RP-Attributes=

=Special Moves=
Become a lich: When Mannik dies he uses his own powers on himself to bring himself back as an undead lich. (Second Wind)

Soul Steal: Mannik leaches the life force from his enemies and adds it to his own (Leech)

Death Blow: Mannik makes a massive attack on the enemies spirit hoping to finish the battle quickly (Double Damage)

=Quirks=
-Elemental Attack: Dark magics work well against each other, gain a +2 ATT bonus when fighting other dark art, but a -2 ATT when facing the powers of light

=Quick Info=
Mannik Thanatos, a black lab necromancer, rather friendly, despite the negative image that comes with such magic. Glass-canon.

Double Attack ‘Cleave’: Attack the same opponent twice in one turn. Your opponent must roll defense against these two attacks separately, and any defensive special moves only apply to one of the attacks.

Attack Support ‘Titan’s grip’: You may support one ally’s attacks. Your ally’s next two attack rolls gain two additional sides, as if his or her ATT score was two points higher.

Disable ‘Disarm’: Attack your opponent as normal. If the attack connects, your opponent cannot act next turn, even if using a special move.

=Quirks=

Close Combatant: You gain an additional point to spend on your combat stats – however, you are completely unable to make attacks at range.

Right then. Some late approvals coming here.

First off Miw? As the rules say ‘no undead characters’. Your character can’t turn himself into a lich with one of his SMs. figure out another way to fluff it. There’s nothing wrong with a necromancer, but yeah keep yourself human.

Shiro? Can’t really see anything wrong. Just your usual adventure. But damn if I’m starting to shake my head at how often I see ‘Cha 2’

Right then. Some of you might have heard me say ‘I’m going to run a game on Monday!’

Well seems things have gotten busy here and that’s likely not going to be possible. I’ll be online later today granted but I’ll likely be too tired to run a game (Free-forms still a possibility though. Damn a lot easier)

For now assume I’m running a game tomorrow (Tuesday) evening around 7pmish EST but this can change. Don’t cancel anything over it -please-.

In other news Caos? Susan’s heal ability must be exactly the same as the normal heal. None of this ‘stronger’ non-sense. I’m going to have to say just NO to female pack. Lovable can just be replaced with Semi-Expert (-1 Combat stats, for +2 Role playing attributes).

Over all, absolutely silly character who likely doesn’t act like an actual female what so ever~ Good luck with that ;p

Hey Bribri, is the game today full up? If not, count me in

Rukral August 24, 2010, 8:00 PM EST.

Comment ID #81239

Honestly Rukral? I don’t really see myself running today, or much this week. Should have the energy for free-form, but to GM a game? We’re sort of getting to the big stuff with the clean up here and it ain’t all that fun~

It’s a ‘Play when you can, GM when you can’ sorta game after all. I set it up like this so breaks were possible. On the plus side a lot of people are giving GMing a shot now, so there should still be quests about.

Bribri August 24, 2010, 8:18 PM EST.

Comment ID #81619

Just for the record I’m making it so seasons/time DO change in the RP. It won’t have any real major effect beyond the fact one week real time=1 month in game. It’s generally assumed that occasional larger gaps of time pass between some of the free form sessions, quests, and other things. It’s been added to the Grand GM/Player list after the Free-form game logs. Can’t miss it~

So *Gasp* your character might actually age. Granted it’ll take -3 months-, and I doubt any of us will need to worry about old age for 6+ real world years at least. Best set your birthday *Chuckles*

A poll for those keeping track of the love triangles…

I wonder if we’ll be able to make a Poll for Ieshy and Amunet sometime? Who’s to say? What happens when you start a community RP from a Drama-comic forum.

Yes it is a bit strange. Amunet isn’t exactly what you call pretty (fur-less, wrinkled abomination that she is) and she certainly isn’t social either. Perhaps it’s the mystery aspect? That strange girl who doesn’t talk much about her self, hidden completely in flowing clothing?

Or it might just be because she’s the only girl left emotionally unattached. Yeah that sounds about right.

Bribri August 25, 2010, 6:58 PM EST.

Hehe, well in regards to Iestyn and Amunet, both share several qualities that they can easily relate to each other and connect w/.
As Miw and I have both said many times though, it’ll be work for that to ever happen, not exactly an overnight thing.

Description
Garrett is a handsome and charismatic Somali Swashbuckler who appears to be about 25, despite actually being closer to 30. He dresses in the clothes of nobles, keeping his appearance that of a high class adventurer, despite not actually coming from high society. His usual attire consists of a collared white button up shirt which he perpetually leaves the top button or two undone on, a pair of black slacks that seem to fit him perfectly, leaving him unrestricted in his movements, a maroon sash around his waist, and a pair of black polished boots, custom made to give the impression of being dress shoes, but are actually designed for adventuring along difficult terrain.

-Other notes-
While the above is his preferred outfit due to it’s simplistic nature and the fact that it allows him to move easily, he does tend to wear more appropriate clothing depending on the situation, such as a more formal attire when blending into high society, and darker clothing when visibility is an issue.

His sash is for more than just fashion, as it also conceals his tool belt. This belt is filled with little trinkets and whatnot that allow him to pick locks, set traps and also holds small gadgets that allow him to be as effective as possible when it comes to his trade. It also hides a small dagger which allow him to be armed even when he is not carrying his trademark cutlass, though his fighting style is not nearly as refined without it.

Being a swashbuckler, and a former pirate, he is motivated mostly by money, and while he does think himself to take the moral high ground most of the time, enough gold clinking together can potentially sway his stance.

Basic Background.
Born in the small coastal town of Bravucón, Garrett was raised to be a fisherman like his father before him. His family was not rich, but they were hardly poor. Still however, Garrett always found himself entranced by the beautiful women of the upper class who lived inside the walls of the castle. He worked hard, and on the side he played with his friends, fighting with sticks and pretending to be pirates and grand adventurers.

As he grew older, he started to make his games more elaborate, and further, more dangerous. He would sneak into the castle and explore the docks well after curfew. It all seemed like fun and games, until one night, a ship he was exploring was shanghaied by pirates with him aboard. He was discovered early into the trip, and almost tossed overboard. However, using his wit and his charismatic charm, he convinced the pirates to take him under their wing, though this mainly consisted of him performing all the menial tasks that the others didn’t want to do.

With time, the captain grew to admire his bravado, and taught him how to fight properly with a cutlass, and just what it took to be a successful sailor, and a damn good pirate. Garrett’s life under the watchful eye of the captain was far more exciting than the one he had left behind, and so he stayed aboard and spent many years with the crew.

Eventually, as all is the fate of most pirates, his captain was killed by another pirate, and the crew was scattered. Garrett escaped with his life, but found himself marooned for a few months on a small island with limited resources, though the way he tells it, it was a desert island and he almost died. He was rescued after a time by a passing merchant ship, and after making it back to land, he set out to become an adventurer, tracking down the adventuring guild of Fair River.

Okay Mavy~ let me knit pick a bit here.

First off ‘Counter’ is just a reworded version of ‘Reflect’ I gather? You deal damage back equal to your success on a defense roll?

Good Luck? Hm was sure I had taken that SM out haha. You are going by the rules linked in the first post no? Anything posted further down the thread is unofficial just so you know. While it’s honestly -not- overpowered with the presence of Fate points its use becomes far more limited. Everyone can use a FP to reroll anything as is leaving it kind of… worthless. You’d likely be better off picking something else.

Nautical Knowledge? Fair-river, while sitting beside a -big- river is a good distance from the actual sea, so you won’t be getting Sea based checks too often. Because of this feel free to either raise the bonus, or lower the penalty, by 1.

Swordsman? Going to have to say no to this one. While the Bonus/Penalties are equal the chances of them coming into effect are not. You’ll be running around with that +2 ATT 70%-90% of the time which ain’t really fair. I’d suggest reworking it, or just taking the Close Combatant Quirk instead.

Okay then folks I have another poll for you but this would be one that has a -big- affect on the mechanics of the game! Not just another silly couple poll!

The Question is:Should defensive SM’s be activated BEFORE or AFTER the roll?

It seems that thus far Defensive SM’s have found very, very little use. Most people are trading them out for other Damage, and Support moves. With our high ATT monsters are moves like Reflect and Absorb being wasted?

On the other hand…given we haven’t SEEN them used much is another big detail here. People just like to burn away their SM on their turn, so it could just be impatience wasting them rather than actual practicality.

Bribri August 28, 2010, 4:34 AM EST.

Comment ID #83076

I dunno if you mean the attack or defense roll. I mean, the way I see it, Defensive moves work best after the attack roll, but before the defense roll.

Consider my character Orga, who’s reflect attack nearly killed another person because I was smart enough to wait until he rolled a 1 on his attack. Although it wouldn’t be as effective if she had rolled a low number as well, I feel that Defensive moves are actually a little stronger than normal moves, at the cost of being situational.

Spradic Zoom August 28, 2010, 4:46 AM EST.

Comment ID #83112

Before. They’re not too weak, just unpopular. But being unpopular isn’t that bad.
Even when activated before the defense roll they’re much more reliable than attack powers, their use just depends on actually being attacked.

Ensnare – Reaching down and connecting directly with the earth, she commands the propagation and movement of roots and creeping plants to reach forth and grab the opponent, their struggling forms caught in the overgrowth. (Attack your opponent; if successful, your opponent cannot defend against the next attack aimed at them.)
Lifeshield (Negate) – As danger encroaches, Sylvia extends her powers to propagate the roots below into a shield faster than the eye can see. The roots may take incredible damage, but life will go on.(Take no damage, though you cannot attack until your next turn.)
(Regenerate) Heal – Silvia’s propagation abilities are not just limited to plants, her body is constantly regenerating itself as well. (Roll your VIT stat and heal yourself that much)

=Quirks=
Lifesense- Silvia is incredibly attuned to the ebb and flow of life in areas of vegetation. She is quickly alerted to possible dangers by the shifts. In areas of heavy vegetation (forests, marshes, etc.), Silvia cannot be surprised by attacking enemies. However her attention often wanders outside of these areas and suffers a -2 penatly to imitative checks in other environments.

Take Root- Calling forth plants around her, she forces their growth into her own flesh, bringing her in direct contact with that she controls, however she is much easier a target. While Rooted, Sylvia gains +2 attack but suffers
-2 defense.

Apperance:
Long haired female, pretty but with a constant distant or neutral look on her face. Wears robes or light, loose clothing which offers free movement. Her skin, while covered in fur is very tough due to the plants within her with what looks like roots webbing near her veins. (hint: they are roots)

Story:
Silvia began life as the daughter of a middle class trader in Caignwell. Her life until 5 was very plain, with very little to mention, until her father’s business began to decline. In response he made some shady deals trading illegal drugs and eventually tried his own product. His addiction was so intense that he accidently killed her mother believing her to be “A demon wearing the skin of an angel.” Silvia was forced to cower and watch as her father brutally skinned her mother alive and proceeded to burn the remains.

As it would be, her father was taken to the gallows shortly after and she was placed in the custody of the kingdom. With no future ahead of her she became rather despondent until a spark of magical talent was found in her, not enough to be a powerful wizard, but enough to be taken under by a wizard specializing in life magic. Her early studies were rather… fruitless. It was not long before the wizard realized the only way she would become anything would be by drastic means. Wanting to try and experiment and seeing her as rather expendable, he drugged her and tied her to a work bench. Using his magic he sowed magically attuned seeds into her skin and forced their growth into her body. When she woke up during this her screams echoed into the basement as roots crawled into her veins, under her eyes and into every fiber of her being. For awhile, she was quite legally dead. And yet, something within her lived on.

Calling his experiment as failure he left the corpse there and forgot about it for a few hours. During this time the plants in her body fed off her meager magical power and managed to thrive. Somehow they seemed to sense that if she was not brought back to life then they would also die. Becoming ingrained even more intensely in her system, the plants finally pulsed, and her heart beat once more. Being dead for so long however wiped much of her memory and thus she was unaware of what had transpired. All she knew was that she felt ALIVE.

The wizard was quite shocked at this as well but decided to keep quite when she acted as if nothing happened. Her studies began to improve drastically, as the plants within amplified her sense of the flow of life and her attenuation to the transfer of energy for propagation, the greatest asset of the life wizards. As she grew her mastery of directing the flow of life increased to the point where she could force a tree to move feet from where it stood and roots to burst forth from a great distance. Her true gift wasn’t realized until a raiding bandit group attacked the two while they were on trip to the wildnerness. The wizard fought back admirably but took an arrow to the throat and died. Seeing this through her into a pure sense of self-preservation. The plants in her system reacted immediately by reaching out to the roots of the trees themselves and physically connecting Silvia to the ground, rooting her and increasing her awareness twofold. The bandits were caught off guard by the sudden explosions of plants plowing through their chests, dragging them into the ground and strangling them. One bandit managed to give her a deep slash before being impaled by a tree branch, however this wound seemed to shift and twist before healing in the blink of an eye. With her teacher dead she retreated to the wilderness to continue her studies. After a few years she was able to freely cooperate with the powers granted her by the plants within.

She became aware of the guild when a hunting party took down a pack of wolves near where she was living, and watching their actions decided to ask about them. She decided that there was more to life than what she knew and wished to spend some time in the company of her own race. Thus she followed the party back to the guild and found a room near a garden, using gold she inherited from the wizard that she honestly never had a use for before.

Ehn not strong enough of a vote here either way for me to change it. And it is a good point that the Defense SM -is- still activated after the attack roll is made, so you still have some control to time it well. Remaining the same~

(Hello all. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get around to playing at all here, but I recently caught a case of “Ah! New system! Must. Make. Character!” so I thought I’d post it here just in case)

Name: Konstantin (Kostya)
Breed: Cat, Maine Coon
Weight: 30 stone
Height 23 hands

=Combat Stats=
HP: 30
FP: 2
Att: 6
Def: 2(3/1)
Vit: 10

=RP Attributes=
Agility: 3
Body: 9
IQ: 4
Perception: 6
Charisma: 8

=Special Moves=
Larger than Life (See Below): When Konstantin decides to fight you, he is not to be ignored. Konstantin chooses one enemy and attacks it as normal. For the next two turns, if the targeted enemy attempts of flee or attack anything other than Konstantin, Konstantin gains one free attack against that it. The effect is ended instantly if Konstantin attacks any other enemy besides the targeted one, or is rendered unable to attack.(If this quirk does not work, pretend it says “Protect” instead).

In your Face (Ensnare): Konstantin grapples his opponent, pinning him down with this monstrous hands.(Often involves face grabbing).

Unrelenting (Second Wind): Konstantin is famous in his homeland for never succumbing to his injuries, able to fight through wounds enough to kill three men.

=Quirks=
Intimidating: Konstantin has such an imposing figure that enemies tend to be more cautious fighting him than they need to be, giving Konstantin a +1 to defense when he is considered a threat. Against foes who he has become nonthreatening to (through blatant failure, humiliation, etc.) and those unable to be intimidated (mindless beings, those immune to fear) he gains a -1 penalty to defense, as he becomes reckless in his attempts to APPEAR more threatening.

Big Mouth: Konstantin is as forceful with this words as with his actions. He gain a +1 to Charisma whenever he is boasting, making threats, or otherwise playing up a situation, but a -1 to Charisma when attempting to be diplomatic, passive, or otherwise playing down something.

With My Bare Hands: Konstantin prefers to fight his battles bare handed, and in fact is not formally trained to use weaponry. When using a melee weapon (anything above a gauntlet or some brass knuckles), Konstantin gets a -1 penalty to Attack, but a +2 to damage if he hits (net +1 damage).

Just So God Damn Huge: Konstantin is a man of truly enormous size, and is capable of feats most normal men would find impossible. Once a day, Konstantin may use his Second Wind to re-roll any body roll, using it up if he is in a fight. If used between fights it is still available in his next one. As a consequence this, Konstantin is often too large for his surroundings. Konstantin is considered to be the size of two men when trying to fit somewhere, and his movement is twice as impeded by cramped or cluttered spaces.

=Quick Info=
Konstantin (Kostya), Maine Coon of incredible size and imposing character.
A:6 D:2(3/1) V:10
B:9 A:3 I:4 P:6 C:8(9/7)

=Description=
A towering man of an already towering breed, Konstantin is a sight to draw pause. His already formidable girth is inflated by a large thick coat of darkly striped grays, browns, and blacks worn unkempt, but not uncleaned. His mouth is large and seems to hold several to many teeth, and his right ear is all but missing. The few pieces of clothing he wears are thin and loose fitting, with worn leather boots and a long hooded traveling cloak. In place of a pack, across his back is an entire barrel, tied across his shoulder with a length of rope.

Konstantin is the sort of man who is hard to ignore. With his great stature and thick Russian-like accent, he tends to turn more heads than not. The majority though, tend to respond with some level of fear or disquiet, a fact that he’s learned to work with. Often the center of attention, whether he deserves it or not, Konstantin enjoys most of all two things: being in on the action, and telling tales of actions been in. While loose with his tongue about his escapades, he is often closed mouthed about himself. His age is “Enough” and his weight is “Very Large” and when asked about his business in Fair-River he will usually reply, “I heard there was place that was not knowing of me. I could not let this be.”

There is little known about Konstantin that is without doubt. He has many stories, but many are likely embellished, and some are in conflict. Doubtless that some must have happened, given his disposition towards adventure, but which ones are hard to say.

(Well in any case, there you have it.)

@Alphonse

Hm lets see here. Okay Larger than Life is fine. Quite similar to protect save that it -punishes- those that ignore you rather then forcing them to attack you. Always fun.

All your quirks seem okay too, most original, but workable. Though I’m a bit iffy about larger then life (though I’m sure a clever GM will easily find ways to punish you for the large size). Really though.. the problem is more so you have 4 Quirks. The Max number of Quirks is 3 so you’re going to have to get rid of one of them

@Ace
Already talked to you about this on IRC. Take root doesn’t really work well. It’s basically just giving you more options at no -real- disadvantage.

Hm, I had a feeling that might be the case. You might want to add the three Quirk limit to the Quirks section of the “AG rules” document. It mentions the three Special Ability limit, but not the three Quirk one.

Either way, just take out “Just So God Damn Huge,” I more or less just wanted a mechanical reminder that given his size, the world is often too small for him (plus re-rolls hooray!).

Character: Elizabeth Alana Lacey Goldwyn of Castle Redway (Or just Liz)

A female British Longhair (cat). Born a member of the Caignwell Nobility, at 15 she had a bit of a fall from grace. Her overly ambitious tried to stir up a rebellion to take the throne. Unfortunately people were content with the king they had, and soon rumour reached the royal guard of the trouble. Her father was put to death for treason, and she lost any privileges her royal blood gave her. However, she survived well on her own; she was not one of those “Helpless little girls.” She had been trained in elemental magics by the greatest teachers money could buy. She was especially adept at ice magic though, eventually being trained solely as a frost mage.

Eventually she found she needed money living on her own, so she joined the Fair River adventurer’s guild. She still claims to be royalty, claiming that her father sent her to the guild as a learning experience, and hoping that no one recognizes her name.

Being born of nobility she was taught to be intelligent and charismatic, although she is a bit of an airhead when it comes to noticing her surroundings. She had a bit of a sheltered life and isn’t particularly strong of body, although her enchanted robes offer some protection against assault. Outside of quests she wars various dresses of different colours, but in battle she always wears the brilliant blue robes, with the royal symbol, proving her a royal-blooded frost mage… even though she technically shouldn’t still have then.

Alphonse, Jester~ Both sheets are fine from what I can tell. I would warn that generally speaking Physical based attacks are a ‘bit’ more common then magic but it really depends on the GM and theme of the quest being played. So we’ll see how that works out~
