GNU Linux, Windows or Mac OS X?

Comment ID #7342

Spamming you again, wich is your Operating System of choice?

I use Ubuntu 9.10 aka Karmic Koala, and dual boot it with Windows XP.

Though I hardly use Windows any more, I cn do everything it does in Ubuntu and better. Though it still has it’s issues, like not able to record from the microphone in some netbooks, and it still needs a good GUI for it’s video encoder. Also, it has trouble with brightness adjustment in Gateways and Toshibas.

I put those issues in case you want to try it. Though it runs smooth in almost all computers, it takes less than a half of space than other OS, and it’s fast, really. Also getting programs for it is really easy, it comes with a software manager that searches for the program you want and downloads and installs it without using a web browser.

I absolutely hate Ubuntu users, BCB forum. I have never seen a group of people be so smug about something so stupid. Oh big fucking deal, you can use a newbie GNU/Linux distro. You’re not some elite hacker, faggot. Why don’t these
people man up and use a real distribution? I don’t get it. Why waste your time with Ubuntu at all? I mean, it’s not like you learn anything by using it. Everything has a GUI interface, updates are easy to get, and you don’t have to do anything on the command line if you don’t want to. What is this faggot shit? Ubuntu is too easy and it’s bringing complete retards into our GNU/Linux secret club. Why do we put up with this shit at all?

If you can’t sharpen your teeth on and use a real distribution, then you don’t deserve to use GNU/Linux at all.

Only superior computer users should be using a GNU/Linux operating system. Faggots and retards can stick to Windows or a Mac. I really think that you should be subject to an IQ test before you’re allowed to download a GNU/Linux distribution. Anyone under a 130 IQ should be rejected and told to never return. Even after the IQ test, if a person passed, they should be made to take a programming test. If they can’t write some simple programs in C, LISP, and Prolog they should be rejected. No exceptions.

What do you say, BCB forum? Are you with me? I’m sure rms would agree with me.

I use Vista > Virtual Console > Ubuntu for interweb surfing. It’s great as long as I don’t wanna play video games or watch movies or listen to music.

I like Ubuntu. You can install it on little old ladies computers and say “You click this to use the net, this to look at your photo’s, and this to make any problems you’ve given it go away.”

Personally I use Windows and Mac the most. Windows for gaming and web surfing, and Mac for video editing. And before anyone tries to tell me that Windows is just as good at editing video as a Mac is, consider that I use Final Cut Pro, a MAC ONLY application, and that very few if any PC’s these days use FireWire 800, which is far superior when it comes to streaming video media off of an external HDD, which is what I’m working with most of the time.

Elitism detected ITT

Anyways, I run Windows 7 because I fucking can and want to, and so I can play my vidja games. That’s about it. Seriously, this is like when motor heads argue over vehicles and parts, and everyone else laughs at them because they’re so high and mighty about being able to do car shit. “Oh, you drive a Toyota Tundra? What a fucking faggot! Ahahahaha.” Nobody fucking cares. Stop putting so much weight on such a small thing.

Yeah sorry I was just posting 4chan /g/ copypasta.

Anyway: UBANTO is for worthless and frugal nerds (and old computers maybe), Windows is for the ignorant, and Mac OS X is for winners.

There’s no real reason why you should use Windows unless you’re heavily into multiplayer PC games or you’re using it at work or you’re too cheap to spend money on a tool you use for many hours every day. OS X is an inconsistent broken confusing overwrought trainwreck of an OS, but it holds a secure position at the top of the retard pile and there’s no good reason not to own a Mac and use it besides the games\work arguments.

I don’t see why anyone should use Ubuntu on a modern computer, even if you can’t accept the proposition that paying the Apple tax is a sensible decision if you value your time. Just run Windows 7 or OSX86? Opensauce nerds can’t do UIs properly and just end up doing a bad job of imitating the commercial OSes, with nothing else to show for it except the fact you can hack it to remotely control a Nintendo Game and Watch over a bluetooth to serial link via a kernel patch. SNORE

Well at the moment I can’t afford my own Mac, and my PC is broken, so I have my Netbook hooked up to my monitor, keyboard, mouse, speaker system and an external HD-DVD drive I borrowed from a friend to serve as my computer ATM. It’s about as AD-HOC as you can get ^^; I use the girlfriend’s Mac for editing etc.

But yes. I use a PC for convenience in that I jump between gaming and net surfing randomly. That and I like to keep my work computer and my fucking-around computer seperate so as to protect said work.

I haven’t used a Linux distro since High School when I decided that I was more interested in film and story telling than I was in programming and PC security. Just got sick of being everyone’s personal technitian…

Let me say this: I managed to whip the utter crap outta Windows ME and manged to make it actually run rather fast and crash FAR less. All it really needed was a memory and a graphics card upgrade (and perhaps a few other things for the hell of it, dunno what, but I’m creative) and it would have beaten, raped, and eaten our “Newer” Windows XP, of which I sincerely wish my mom would let me at cuz the damned thing is slower than Vista booting up. Which takes a good five-giveortakeanotherfive minutes.

And when summer comes, I’m gonna do the same to Vista and get rid of that dammed security feature that is utterly useless.

HOWEVER, my very first computer was indeed a mac. :3 And I eventually intend on getting another. Don’t care whatcha say, I love the ability to customize the utter crap out of windows and I also love Macs simplicity, for when my brain decides to go “fuck it, I ain’t screwing around with this shite no more.”

Linux, never had the oppurtunity to use. Would love to get my hands on one, though.

Ubuntu, well… ya don”t interest me in the slightest, whatever you offer I can and already have down. So yeah. My view on the current available OSes..eseses, or however the crap that’s spelled correctly.

I am considering using my free upgrade to 7, though, the only problem being that it would also potentially overwrite ALL my stuff. And I would be sincerely pissed if I couldn’t pass all my stuff over and I had to lose it all. Got games I gotta finish programming, and I DO NOT want to lose ANY progress.

Well crap, that turned into either a massive rant, or one really interestingly massive piece of info about myself. X3

Yes, video games are pretty much the reason I use windows, and because I don’t feel like fucking around and getting an .img to run every goddamn executable. Anyways, are you saying I should get a Mac? Because that’s retarded, why would you spend $2000 when you can build a $600 PC with the same specs and then just fucking install OS X?

Cyo, are you honestly talking about running Windows ME? In 2010? That’s crazy! DOS mode and everything..? What are the latest web browsers you can run?

CaptainBaconMan, because Macs are aesthetically attractive, include small thoughtful hardware features, are compact, light and portable, but most of all because running OSX86 is such a fucking ordeal to install, maintain and occasionally fix that it negates the entire purpose of having a Mac. The price difference isn’t $600 v $2000, btw. Usually you’re looking at a 20-30% premium, which is well worth it.

Hahahahahaha, no. I got rid of Windows ME. I’m currently running Vista on a brand new computer, just bought it this year. ^^

After having the other thing for around 6-7 years. Wanted to get internet on the old thing, just to see how it would handle everything. I still have the thing, so I might experiment on it, see what I can do with it.

Actually, the main reason is to run 32 bit software on it, since that stuff will no longer work on my new 64 bit OS. Of which I’m rather annoyed, since all the freeware stuff I used to use currently hates 64 bit, so I have to figure out how to get it to work.

I’m massively PO’d that DOOM no longer runs.

However, I was told there was a 64 compatible version, so I’mma go find that.

I don’t know if this can be trusted, but if it’s true that’s a lot more than 20-30%.

Yeah, comparing a desktop gaming PC to a Mac Pro is a weaselly\ignorant thing angry fanboys like to do. The main problems with that graphic come from some of the choices made to get to that high figure. Firstly, they pick the Mac Pro, which has an (expensive!) Xeon processor and ECC RAM, server-grade stuff that is way more costly and not really in the same field. Secondly, they include stupid things like Apple’s pricing for the 12gb RAM, which, like most OEM-supplied RAM, is super overpriced and is really high margin for them. A real price for the 12gb RAM is about $400. Then, they compare two Apple displays to I guess generic Dell displays, which is kind of unnecessary and weird (the Dell displays work fine with the Mac!) but also don’t take into account the Apple displays are different, including (expensive) LED backlighting and (expensive) internal power adaptors for MacBooks. Plus they’re also overpriced.

Anyway, the real-world price for a Mac Pro with the specs listed is about $3000, plus whatever the two cheapo 24” monitors cost. Expensive, but hey, it’s a Xeon with ECC RAM and all that shit. It’s not a cost effective gaming computer, it’s designed as a workstation and for render farms and semi-industrial things like that. A better comparison to that $1400 gaming computer would be the iMac, which doesn’t even register in most nerds’ minds because they go insane thinking about how hard it’s going to be to install neon lights in the PSU.

While Apple don’t have much to counter a generic box filled with fast components and nothing else, the best comparison to a gaming PC would be the 20%-more-expensive $1699 iMac 27” lower end model, which has a 3ghz C2D, 4gb RAM and only one graphics card. But for what it lacks in raw specs, it includes a very high quality 27” LED IPS display which is worth something like $1000 on its own. It works wonderfully as a desktop computer and is reasonable as a gaming computer, so it suits me, and I’d imagine anyone else who spends more time working than playing games and prioritises their computer components accordingly.

The other thing is that Apple only refreshes their lines every 6-12 months, so if you catch a computer at the tail end of a refresh cycle, they’re usually worse value. Take a look at the MacBook Pros to see some well-priced mid-high-end laptops—Apple just refreshed them. Take a look at the MacBook Air to see a computer very late into its update cycle that could easily be adapted for an internet argument about how expensive Macs are.

Yer, just took a look online, and Macs ARE more expensive. More like on average 2500 for a MacPro. 1000 for a Macbook Pro. The imac is 1200.

Take a look: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Apple/Mac/pcmcat128500050006.c?id=pcmcat128500050006&searchterm=mac&searchresults=1

Not exactly cheap. But DEFINITELY less than 7000.

Cyo April 24, 2010, 5:17 PM EST.

Then again, Best buy tends to overprice things a tad. So it’s probably less.

And, of course, ninja’d by Suitcase.

I was hoping he’d ninja that because I’m sure it was biased, but I don’t know, and don’t feel like looking up exactly why and how it’s wrong.

I want a Mac, but I’m poor. I used to have a Mac that had Mac OS 9.1 on it (it was an old mac I got from a mate’s uncle, can’t remember the model though). I used for about 2 months then the monitor was useless. Since then I’ve been using this laptop for surfing and school and my mum’s PC for graphic work. This laptop one day decided it hated Windows XP, so I got it changed to Ubuntu. And that’s why I have it. But yeah if I could afford it, Mac would be my choice.
