So how is Bittersweet Candy Bowl doing?

Very well thank you! We started March with about 300 readers, and just now we’ve hit 2107. That’s kind of incredible. You guys have made 4,600 comments on the comic, 2,500 on the forum, and have caused this graph to spike fairly ridiculously:

As well as the comic readership graph (the real one that matters)

Posted image

Plus you’ve got us to #1 on Webcomicz, #1 (for a time) on Comic Hovel, and most importantly #19 on Topwebcomics.

This is fabulous. I don’t think either of us really know what we should aim to do with BCB and its website, but gathering readers is clearly a stepping stone to any number of new things. And we hope that number will only climb higher! Right now we’re on an advertising hiatus so that spike of visitors (from big ad campaigns) is leveling off so we know where we really are, but I anticipate we’ll keep on periodically doing ads to gather visitors like all the great new people that saw us through a banner ad or similar.

Posted image

(We even did text ads, isn’t that funny)

Look at that graph! How much money are you raking in?

We spend $327 a year just on hosting and domains! And so far, $180 on ads. (This doesn’t include $75 of free AdWords credit Google gave me.) For those counting, that’s $120 to Project Wonderful, $15 to The Webcomic List, $25 to the author of Slightly Damned, $15 to Top Webcomics (we’re in their queue!), and $5 to Webcomicz.

But there’s nothing really coming in. We could put up ads, but I’m not so hot on that idea, plus it’d only maybe net $20 a month. I think.

Now, we’re not living in squalor, but we’re not rich either, and I think it’s Veronica’s dream to cut down on her “real job” in favour of working on the comic. At this stage, the goal is for her to maybe work fewer days in the week towards the end of the year and make money with the comic instead. As it stands, to cut down on a day of work (she works 5-6 days\wk) in favour of BCB would basically require around $100 USD of profit. Looking to the future, when she goes to uni next year it’d be nice if she could ditch casual work entirely and make a reasonable second income just from the site.

But wow, that’s kinda hard! You guys have been nice and have donated $17 (for no raisin! Why!!) but obviously that falls short of the goal. But that’s okay - donating sucks, it gets you nothing and it’s not very exciting. That’s why I don’t like the idea of begging for “tips”—you should get stuff in return.

A solution

SO. Two parts to this. There’s a book, and then there’s merchandise. The book is something I know people are interested in, and it’s something that’s on its way. But it’s really hard, and takes a lot of time to prepare! So we’ll leave that for now.

But we’re going to do some manner of merchandise!

Does this mean you’re putting together a Cafepress shop with a FUNNY COMIC PANEL pasted over a baby outfit, placemat and thong?

No! I hate that kind of thing. We will however use the existing print-on-demand services online, but we want to make sure we pick the best quality ones and get samples in and get photos of those for you and all that before actually putting them up on the site. Plus everything will have a design actually suited to it, and should (hopefully?) be cute enough and of good enough quality that you might actually wear or use it in real life.

What I’d be curious to know is what you guys would think of the following products and prices. Are there any you’d probably buy, or any prices seem ridiculous and unfair?

T-shirt — Girls $18, Boys $20. These would be colourful good quality silkscreened shirts that’d have designs that are more “cute” than “The Cake Is A Lie!!!! VISIT MY WEBCOMIC AT WWW.IAMACOMICNERDTHATWEARSCOMICTSHIRTS.COM”. Something tasteful but still BCB-themed!
Tote bag — $18. Like those reusable grocery bags, a fabric one, with a simple design of some kind on it.
Coffee mug — $17. Again, a cute design to go on this. No logos or any nonsense, just Mike and Lucy doing something maybe.
Key ring decoration — $10. This would be a handmade thing that Veronica would actually draw, and you could.. put on your keys. I guess. $2 shipping on this one.

Shipping to the US for the rest of the above would be about $5, shipping overseas $15. But that’s for up to 2 items, so you could buy a t-shirt and a tote bag or whatever.

So I’m curious, what do you all think of those products? Would you buy them? After spending some time digging around relevant sites, these seem like the most compelling products we could put together, and Veronica and I already have some good ideas for designs to put on them. Are there any things missing that you would buy or consider buying?

Feedback would be great. Webcomics are hardly profitable enterprises for the most part, but we’ve got such a great readership now that it might be worth seeing what we can make of it—plus there’s been some interest in buying stuff, right?

The project wonderful banner ads are what drew me here. I liked the art style. Not sure how it works so feel free to swat me for this, but I think if you switched out the ad banner periodically you could reel in more readers. Maybe using some kind of joke involving a recent arc.

That’s my two cents.

Not really a rich man, quite poor in fact haha, so I’ve yet to buy webcomic related material given the sheer number I read. Maybe when I’m a little more stable I’ll try to grab something from one site a month; likely the Mug in BCB’s case. Nothing against the T-shirt idea….but I’d look pretty silly wearing something cutesy…while no one is really awake enough to care what you’re drinking out of in the morning.

That said… It isn’t a bad idea, though I’d give it a month or two to see how many of those new readers stay around. Fickle things they can be.

I also really wouldn’t mind an add, even if it only brings in 20 bucks a month, that’s 20 bucks that can go towards the server after all! I doubt anyone sensible is going to leave the site, or complain about a single add; almost all web-comics have them without hurting their readership!

Heh, I might go for a t-shirt.

If you don’t value them that much you could always sell original drawn copies of older panels, sign them or something.

Stickers, buttons, and buttons are always a good choice. They’re cheap to make and buy in bulk, and people buy them all the time.

That and theirs always commissions, but from the sound of it She doesn’t have the time.

Honestly I think the mug wont sell though, especially at around $17. But, you never know, I don’t really know what the fanbase of BCB is like since I’m fairly new.

Personally, I would like a cool bookmark. They wouldn’t sell a whole lot though. Unless you offered a wide variety. Say, individual character bookmarks and shipper bookmarks. The MikexLucy shippers would buy the MikexLucy bookmarks, the PauloxLucy shippers for the PauloxLucy bookmarks. That way you could appeal to everyone. Heck, the MikexLucy people might buy the PauloxLucy bookmarks to use as targets for their throwing knives even. I mean, not that I would do something like that. Why would someone accuse me of that? It’s not like I was planning on doing that…I’ll shut up now.

Honestly, a mug is most interesting to me personally, as it’s kind of a conventional thing to own novelty mugs. I think a shirt suitable for males is going to be a harder ask.

I admit $17+shipping is unreasonable but it’s the cheapest I can find without doing a proper bulk order (which would be silly to start with.) If it interests you, Veronica was thinking of a drinking glass which as far as I can tell could be sold for $10 but would require us to order like 40+. So maybe later.

Are stickers and buttons really that popular? I kind of ruled them out because they sounded like something I wouldn’t buy. Am I wrong, is there an interest in buttons and stickers? What would you do with them?

As for old panels and things, hmm. I was thinking maybe Vero could sell some of her doodles and non-canonical comics. I’m not sure if it’s worth letting go of proper chapter pages (yet?)

Personally, I don’t generally buy things from comics or webcomics….mostly because I don’t have that much disposable income, or there are other things I’d rather be spending it on…like a gear puller so I can fix my damn belt sander. Also, I have rather odd…principles when it comes to buying….”fan items”. I don’t really have a use for a tote bag or a key chain, but I might be interested in a mug, possibly a shirt. I’d definitely would be interested in a book whenever you guys come around to making that….but one thing I’d like to note, extra materials are a huge selling point…for me anyway. I’m talking about those fun cut-out things like they have in the Sam&Max book to make the Max paper-sack-puppet. You just don’t see that much anymore.

Basically, if something is awesome enough on it’s own merits, that is, it’s still awesome without the context of it’s source material, I’m much more inclined to buy it. So….I guess I’d have to see the actual designs before I could give you an opinion on whether I’d buy ‘em. I’ve been tempted to buy certain Dr. McNinja shirts in the past, simply because they’re awesome. Who wouldn’t want a t-shirt depicting a man knocking another man flat on his ass with a live alligator? I was also tempted to get one of those “Maw” figures from the guys over at Johnny Wander because…well did you see that thing? Having a tiny crow demon thing with a gaping mouth of teeth and a tongue serving as a third leg sitting on my desk? Hell yes. Basically it’s a tiny vinyl hurricane of cute/horrifying.

BCB figures/toys/whatever are something not on that list that seem to sell well with webcomics….that I’ve seen. Now I don’t know exactly what sort of expense or planning goes into making something like that….but from what I’ve heard, it’s not exactly a simple process. Design, and finding a manufacturer sounded like the hardest bits. Still, something you might want to think about.

I’d probably buy a set of mugs (or just one if there’s only one design), a tote bag or two as I actually need them, and the Coles one’s are rather lame, and possibly a girls shirt for my gal, though I’m not sure what kind of guy’s shirt I’d go for, as I don’t tend to hang my love of cute things out on my sleeve in public ^^;

One thing that isn’t mentioned that I’d like is poster sized prints. Or those cloth poster things you hang on nails. I’d love one of those with the whole cast posing or something.

As for ads… Every little bit helps. Chuck em up. As the reader base grows, you can demand higher prices.

Maverik April 23, 2010, 4:10 AM EST.

Comment ID #7519

Oh yeah, as Quackslaver reminded me. I would DEFINITELY buy a book & figurines (Though I understand that figurines are less likely).

Maverik April 23, 2010, 4:13 AM EST.

Comment ID #7525

Yes, well, figurines would be lovely but they require a certain amount of investment and won’t pay off in small bursts. We’re taking baby steps here. It’s definitely a cool idea for the future, though!

Are prints interesting? Prints, bookmarks, stickers, these are all things that are easy to do, but I discarded them because they don’t seem useful to me. I could be getting things wrong! What would you want on them, though? Just pictures of the characters on some stickers? What on earth would go on a poster? Where would you put it?

I don’t like ads because it clutters things up and distracts people and makes their experience worse for such a small return. I dunno. Maybe when we have better numbers and it’d yield more than a dollar a day.

Ha! the Slightly Damned ad was worth it, I ignored for a while, got bored then clicked it. Seeing as I’m paranoid and don’t really want anybody who actually knows me to know that I read anthropomorphic comics think I would buy most things from the store. I like the tote bag idea though, as well as the donation button, which I will use as soon as I find it.

(nameless) April 23, 2010, 6:28 AM EST.

Comment ID #7548

Print’s can be of anything really. Group poses… Cute images… One or two characters doing something cool/romantic… Or even a particularly powerful frame from the comic enlarged. As for where would I put it? Well cute/romantic stuff would go in my bedroom where I can blame the girlfriend, and anything else would be in my lounge/possibly used as part of my background in episodes of my review show.

I kind of agree that stickers and buttons aren’t really worth it. Save that sort of stuff for selling/handing out at conventions, where nick nacks are bought spur of the moment. There’s too much thought process behind buying something online to really make any money off of small stuff like them IMO.

I’d totally buy myself a keyring decoration and a t-shirt.

I’d buy a mug, but our cupboards are literally overflowing with mugs my parents have bought from vacations, or received as presents. Cause we’re the crazy mug people who only enjoy mugs when you mug mugs mugs mug MUGS. But now I hate mugs due to the fact it is a pain to do the dishes when I can’t fit all those god forsaken mugs in the cupboard.

Anyways, I’m also always looking for posters to hang on my wall, so I’d definitely buy one of those myself. I’ve got this aspiration to cover all of my regular white walls with posters before I move out, but at the moment all I’ve got is a Bioshock 2 poster.

If you want some donations, it’s a good idea to let it be seen :). Also, keep drives for it now and then. Most comics do it, we’re used to it and are unlikely to think that you are “pushy” or anything like that.

I still think stickers would sell, I’d buy one. And even if it’s true that they probably sell better in person, if you get them to sell at conventions (if you guys even do that) then you might as well sell them online too.

As for a male t-shirt design, I don’t think it’d be that hard. Just put David or Paulo’s face with a speech bubble saying something funny. That or do something generic like have the entire cast of the comic in a line up. Or something, Idk. Parody something with the characters. I’m sure you could even get away with just putting one of the character’s faces on a shirt.

I mean, if the guys over at Pure Pwnage can get away with this kind of shitthen so can you.

Idk, I’d be happy to help though. I’ve got some graphic design experience.

I’d really like to have some kind of BCB related trinket! Not sure about a shirt, as grown men wearing shirts with cutesy cartoon cat people on them is not too socially acceptable.

For the record, I’m just gonna (re)state outright you guys have pretty much all the rights to use McCain in anything - not that I expect you guys to make merchandise out of him (he’s way too fringe to get a shirt or anything like that), but in case it might cause trouble as far as book printing or anything like that.

So I guess I shoulda donated more than $5 :p

Ever since I started buying some of my clothes from the internet designed by my favourite webcomic artists I haven’t gone cloth shopping in months.

When I buy webcomic/video blog merch, its usually t-shirts because they’re the most inexpensive and I’m more likely to wear them more often than most of my other non-webcomic based cloths.
While I would like to see what a BCB bunny hug would look like (I swear to god, “hoody” has to be the stupidest term for a hooded sweater I’ve ever heard. I feel more manly calling it a “bunny hug” than a “hoody”) and I would seriously consider buying one or two, though I don’t wear sweaters all that often, even here in cold old Canada :p

One thing I’ve always wondered: why doesn’t anyone sell pants? I mean, I don’t know what you could put on them that would make them desirable without making them gaudy for anyone to want to wear them, but I despise going out to shop for pants and would love to see my favourite webcomic artists figure out a good formula for selling nice comfy fancy pants with something on it to identify with the webcomic, but that’s just me… hell, shorts would be cool.

I think the prices listed are more than fair. I don’t see myself buying tote bags or key ring decorations, but a mug would be cool… though, I never buy mugs from the internet because I’m always worried that it would break during the shipping process.

Shipping to the US is $5? What about Canada, $5 USD too?

There ya go, my 2 cents.

YO RIXX

I appreciate that. I think that’s one of the thing that freaks me out a little about fan characters. Not just the moral obligation to give you a share if we make money off your character (which we likely won’t do with any general BCB book, but would do if some great idea for merchandise arose) but legal problems that could occur in case someone went insane (Shinoka) or decided on a whim that they hated us (Lily). It’s a little awkward, and I feel trepidation about current things like Liam’s incentive thing and the upcoming chapter about Kou’s life. I know most people won’t be dicks, but it’s something a little out of our control—makes me feel a little like those webcomics which create characters out of commercial characters and products and have to phase them out (like the Xbox in Ctrl-Alt-Del, or the DivX player in Penny Arcade).

Chewy,

I have never heard of “Bunny Hug”! Sounds cute. Hoodie makes you sound like a hoodlum. I do not see how the former is manlier.

I am not sure about $5 shipping. Do you refer to the mug? If so, we’re deciding between Zazzle and Deviantprints (really!) for the mug. See what they charge, it may be lower for Canada than the rest of the world. The shirts will be done by Spreadshirt.

Also, I heard you can buy pants online!

It a terrible story of heart ache, and betrayal SuitCase, are you sure? Once I had a simple life, a steady job, a loving family, but that all changed when he came into my life. We swept me off my feet and showed me a world that I had never imagined. He popped the bubble of life and we ran away together. We rode the rails for a year, going where ever the trains did, with only ourselves and a dog named Waffles for company.

One day we were trying to catch a train to Washington, Waffle’s was pulling hard on his makeshift leash and I noticed that it was becoming a tab bit frayed, but I decided not to mention anything. I decided not to make a comment. As we were running to grab the train, the leash broke and Waffles tumbled down the hill and fell into a truck full of pillows heading towards town. Waffles didn’t chase after the train that day.

He never forgave me and eventually left me alone, I returned home and now I prowl the internet, making sure I always leave a comment. Maybe one day I’ll leave enough comments to make up for the one I never made….
