What is your favorite Studio Ghibli Movie and why?

I know the same animator worked on Howl’s Moving Castle, but I don’t remember if that was studio Ghibli. If it was, that’s my favorite.

howls was in fast a gibli film, the author of the original book said in an interveiw that the movie wasent her vision but was stilll excellent and fully gibli and was glad for it

Just checked, it is by studio Ghibli.
Anyway, that would be my favorite because it is based on a book that I love but is very different in many major plot points. But unlike most movies where when they change it from how the book was and I hate it, Studio Ghibli did an amazing job and, if anything, made the movie more enjoyable.

Hayao Miyazaki is awesome.
He spent weeks studying how little girls moved and how they did everything to get his animation right.

You don’t seem to be yourself, Jerk. What’s the deal?

I really enjoy all the movies.. they each have their own characteristics, but a lot of them do share a common theme.
My personal favorites would have to be Nausicaa Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, and of course, the classical My Neighbor Totoro. In general I really wouldn’t mind going through all the movies in one sitting. Ghibli marathon whoo ![]()

hmmm i have noticed a strong enviromental theme to a number of Miyazaki’s movies and most if not all have a strong female protaganist which is always a good thing, though when he first tried to bring his work to america in te ninties the stron female leads often stoped his movies from being faithfully released and executives at american animation studies released a terrible abomination in the form of the butchered and thrice edited Wind warriors instead of Naussicaa Valley of the wind

well, honestly i’m not a big fan of them.
i don’t like most of their movies.
but i did enjoy “toro no totoro”,as far as childrens movies go it’s perfect.
and also spirited away, but i’m too lazy to explain why.

That one with the girl in the weird world and that guy that’s a dragon at the end. What’s it called?

I think Howl’s Moving Castle is my favourite, although I believe both Ponyo and My Neighbour Totoro might take that spot if I ever get to see them. ^_^
That said, I think Grave of the Fireflies was quite beautiful. A bit too sad for my tastes, though, but still a marvel.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and The Cat Returns are both good as well. Actually, The Cat Returns is very nearly a combatant for first place. ![]()

I don’t believe I’ve seen any other then Princess Mononoke

My Neighbor Totoro, I saw it first when I was six. (on VHS… )

Castle in the Sky for me.
Reasons: The characters, mostly. Especially the air pirates. Plus, the villain is just as much a total bastard as he should be.
Then there’s the world in which the movie takes, a rather steampunkish place where flight seems to be the main focus of pretty much anything. Then Clark’s Third Law literally drops from the sky (multiple times) and suddenly there’s this whole super-advanced Atlantis-like floating civilization with super-powered robots and nuclear deathrays and holograms and stuff.
The Cat Returns comes in at second place…again, the characters are really good.
Spirited Away beats out Grave of Fireflies due to the latter being (although really well done) incredibly depressing.

Castle in the Sky. It’s a very good story.

My cousin works at a movie store and she would send us these huge boxes of old movies. I watched Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro over and over again when I was 7 or so. I’ve also seen Spirited Away and Castle in the Sky but I have to say that My Neighbor Totoro is my favorite just because I have so many memories of watching it and stuff. Also because they grew this huge tree in 20 minutes.

Either My Neighbour Totoro or Laputa:Castle in the Sky from Miyazaki
Both have magical landscapes and wonderful characters, with an exciting plot from beginning to end. Though I might be more in favour for the latter because of it’s musical score (the original Japanese one, not the Disney score for American audiences with short attention span
)
And Pom Poko from Takahata (the other Ghibli Master)
I was actually the only one in my family who liked it. But hey, it was a whole movie about some delightfully delusional magical raccoons that were fighting a loosing war but kept hopeful. And threw some awesome parties! Even the coda of the film is wonderful. To say, it was a wee bit long and preachy but other than that it was quite enjoyable. ![]()
@ILB
You have to watch my Neighbour Totoro!
But you aren’t missing out on Ponyo, as astounded as I find myself saying this of a Ghibli film, it was bloody rubbish! And I’m not to hopeful on their adaptation of the Burrowers either. I’m waiting for the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter sometime in 2012.

I believ those were Tanuki not raccoons, just translated as raccoon to make it eaiser for american auidences
Hav’nt seen that film myself though
Comment ID #80655
Also changed for translation of that movie: They are pouches, not nutsacks.
Comment ID #80695
You think so, Pronkat? People have told me that Ponyo is a stunning film. ^_^
By the way, Hannibal, are you referring to Tales from Earthsea?
Comment ID #80698
ponyo is stunning visually but the story leaves something to be desired
Comment ID #80705
That might be. I have noticed that some people stop caring about other aspects when the visuals are good. ^_^

Wow, a tough question. I love all the Studio works, and i don’t know. To choose my favorites…well..should i say…in order.
Howl’s Moving Castle
The idea is great, and the story based upon a war and a magician, just caught me in.
Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Firefly’s) Awesome movie by Takahata
A story about two kids after the WWII, full of sadness, sorrow, an awesome impression of the Japan after the war.
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (known in america as Spirited Away)
Lots and lots of amazing creatures, Japanese myths and legends.
Porco Rosso
Who doesn’t like this flying pig?
That’s all.
Comment ID #81070
@ILB I think it was Spirited Away. Princess Mononoke was pretty good once I realized the point of the movie (I was like 7, gimme a break.)
Comment ID #81074
That might be. I haven’t seen either. ^_^
Comment ID #81168
My Neighbor Totoro was the first anime I ever watched at the age of…Jesus, I must’ve been eight. That was one of the happiest memories of my childhood.
Comment ID #81701
It’s a tie between Howl’s Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke.
Comment ID #110974
I saw My Neighbour Totoro this week, and Ponyo only yesterday. And I thought both of them were fantastically charming. Granted, Ponyo was a bit lacking in the story, but the mother telling the father that he was a jerk was funny enough for me to forgive that. ^_^
Comment ID #110993
There is no greatest Ghibli Movie, period. But My Neighbor Totoro was my childhood favourite, and as I got older i became interested in Princess Mononoke, the Castle of Cagliostro, and Nausicaa. My brother went through a Castle in the Sky phase as well.
And My Neighbors the Yamadas is always a good one. Then again, all of them are good.
Comment ID #111016
Spirited Away is hands-down my favourite.
Comment ID #111461
I sadly watched only few of them and from the few my favourite is Nausicaa… I’ve also searched for the manga to know the full story.
Comment ID #111464
Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and even though I haven’t see it, My Neighbour Totoro. The sushi conviced me to trust it: Totoro Sushi
Other than that I have no idea. Recommendations?
Comment ID #111472
Watch My Neighbour Totoro. That is my recommendation. ^_^
But I have yet to see a bad Ghibli movie, so I would not disadvise any of them.
Comment ID #111482
Totoro, then onwards to conquer Ghibi movies. Check. Thanks, ILB ![]()
Comment ID #111485
It was, literally, the very least I could do.
Hee. I just realised that “disadvise” is not a word. I think it ought to be. ^_^
Comment ID #111732
The vaguest plans are often the best, ILB. “I would disadvise taking another step, good sir, or I shall be forced to take action! Action involving the premise of fisticuffs!” Disadvise does sound right… Oh well. Use it anyway! ![]()
Comment ID #111744
You say you want a revolution… ^_^
Oh well. I think I will try to acquire a copy of Princess Mononoke soon. That seems to be a good film (although the cover scares me).
Comment ID #111780
Ah. Is Princess Mononoke the one with the Spirit Wolf, and Deer and Giant Evil Sludge Slug Thing? Possibly a guy with fantastic bow and arrow skills? I distinctly remember a sentry tower and a few other details but not much else.
Comment ID #111845
I like Kiki’s Delivery Service. It’s awesome cuz it has a cat in it. ![]()
Comment ID #111849
Howl’s Moving Castle. I was a fun of the novel and the movie just it ten times better even though there were differences.
Spirited Away was okay but Chihiro was a fucking cry baby.
Comment ID #111854
i liked Howl’s Moving Castle. it was a little creepy though. But now that i think of it, a lot of his movies are.
Comment ID #112251
Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away, its a tie between those two
^was my first anime show i ever watched so its kinda nostalgic for me
Comment ID #112255
Howl’s, then Spirited Away.
Head back to the forum index.

Well? What is it?

Picture related
It was the first one that I had ever seen. Ever since then, I’ve been watching their films like crazy. Coming in close in second is “The Cat Returns”, which is followed by “Porco Rosso”.
