You don’t need to forget about the forums to join in IRC, you can do both, they both have different purposes.

I think what made skype so prominent at first was the forum comics that went along with them. It was downhill from there.

Actually, why aren’t there any IRC forum comics? The important people already have their chibi forms well known, and the rest of us could deal with generic silhouettes, I’m sure.
